If there's one thing I loved about the space combat in The Expanse, it was the way they handled damage. Most series felt the need to have crippled or destroyed ships go up in gratuitous (and easy to animate) explosions so they didn't have to model damage to the hull. Just seeing a ship lose axial control and start to spin with a bunch of holes in it feels a lot more satisfying than seeing it disappear in a fireball.
But also ships in the Expanse often DO disappear in a gratuitous fireball, especially if the attacker wants it. Any damage to reactor leads to a nuclear explosion. Only top of the line military vessels like Roci have sensors to dump reactor plasma the moment a round hits the ship in a way that endangers the reactor.

As a corvette the Roci is built with 6 PDCs the main advantage for Roci is in the close range where it can bring all its PDCs to yield. Based on the ship design the Roci is able to use 5 PDCs to cover every angle. Compared to the larger destroyer or even capital ships their PDCs are only built for defense and in close range only 1 PDC can cover an angle hence why Roci is able to punch above its weight class when the PDCs come into play.
There will never be anything in science fiction like the combat in the Expanse. It's either an oppressive long range exchange of torpedoes with PDCs defending, or terrifying close quarters with so many variables it's like a savage bar room brawl thrown in between and around a graceful ballet team.
That fight with the Amun-Ra at Thoth station is and remains absolutely epic. Showed just how much damage a heavily armed frigate could do, especially to a vessel not designed for close-quarter combat. The Amun-Ra was just plain not prepared for combat on an even keel, or to defend a stationary target. They held their own the first pass, but they were assassins, not brawlers. The Rocinante absolutely pasted them in the second pass, leaving their ship swiss cheese and Thoth station wide open to the boarding party.
Probably the wrong word. Some ships do seem to be designed to better take PDC rounds even if they can't deflect them. Rocinante got hit pretty hard by the Amun-Ra in the first pass but they stayed functional and in the fight - barely. Mars made that ship to brawl, to get in from medium to close range and wail on their target. That's why Guy Molinari had to hide them approaching Thoth - so they could get in close enough to unload on both the station and its defender. The second pass pretty much turned the Amun-Ra into a dead hulk - they were NOT made for CQB, but to sneak in, unleash a storm of long-range weaponry before their target had a chance to react, and disappear again. Station defense was not their design goal and it showed.
@@tearstoneactual9773 Those 40 mm PDCs were *nasty* and the Roci was bristling with them. It was far, far more heavily armed than any light frigate had a right to be. They took some fairly serious damage on the first engagement, but the second round, the crew was ready and whaled on the Amun Ra with everything she had. Straight knockout. It wa beautiful to see.
@@ArchTeryx00 - yes, yes it was. And Alex went into that fight expecting them to lose. *Badly.* He trained so hard for that fight, and it paid off big. :)
Although the name Rocinante comes from Don Quixote I do wonder if the writers were Rush fan's as its the ship in the song's Cygnus X-1 and Hemispheres " On my ship, the 'Rocinante', Wheeling through the galaxies, headed for the heart of Cygnus, Headlong into mystery."
I honestly wish the external shots during the fights were silent, as space is a vacuum yadda yadda, you just see the turrets blasting away and missles chasing their targets silently through the inky black of deep space.
Anyone, that doesn’t understand that the “Roci” is in its self in fact it’s own character... well, to them I say, Dém no beltalowda. No kopeng. Da be BIG bosmang welwala! “Ohh.. Bosmang, Dédawang deting im ta showxa” Haha 🤣
Since the ships in The Expanse travel always at brachistochrone trajectories, most of the travel happens with speeds above escape velocity. Which means the debris will leave the Solar System altogether in a few months or years, tops.
Damn the captain of that Leonidas must've felt bad. Imagine being so outclassed by the other side's tech that a single of their frigates can cripple your battleship with a little ingenuity.
Well the Leonids wasn’t beaten by just a frigate, in conventional engagement it would have won, but the Roci has Holden, the button pushing coffee fuelled ex UNN madman, only a insane or genius person would come up with the manuver undertaken by the Roci
@@raphiontherocks1591 First, it would be very boring. Human brains love feedback, thats why you have small sound cues in game when you kill an ennemy for example. So, not having sound feedback would be pretty bad for us. Second, well, you don't hear that much sound. When the missiles (thermonuclear missiles!) explode, you don't hear anything. However, you hear missiles being launched and motors, because, if you were inside the ship, you would hear the engine roaring, and the vibration caused by launched the missiles/PDCs firing/etc... So my headcannon is that you hear the sounds from the POVs (or rather, POS, point of sound) of the characters inside the ship thats in the screen at this moment.
Rocinante may not as good as those stealth ship, but hell, that ship and the crew is hell of fighter. With Rail gun upgrade in season 4, I actually hope there will be another new combat upgrade for Rosy in season 5
I thought that it was explained that the decks of the Roci and other ships were stacked like in a silo (note the orientation when they escaped the Donniger) yet they always shoot the scenes as if the beam is horizontal to the decks?
The ships' orientation in relation to each other really does not matter since the only sense of "down" would be towards the drive. But, as Das said, its because that makes more sense to most viewers.
The thrust comes from the tail end, thus having to travel in a nose first orientation. Also I’d think that when closing the distance I’d want to show the smallest target profile possible. In other battles once in PDC range you see the ship flipping all over the place to bring more guns to bear almost like a broadside attack. That’s just my thoughts on it. I kinda stopped thinking too hard about it when I nerdgasmed over the whole missile escort part. That was so cool.
LOL. I got a clean recording of PDCs firing from when they were defending the Somnambulist from an incoming missile. I had it as the G-Mail "incoming mail" chime on my phone. Had to take it off. It's too jarring to suddenly hear PDCs firing right next to you.
Almost. It's better than science fantasy. The only errors I could find are, the muzzle flare would in fact be red, there is no stealth in space, and the explosions are bright and dissipate immediately. Episode is accurate in the sense that shooting down missiles and drones with nuclear missiles can be the only effective point defense, however, with law as it stands, even having it aboard ship is a one-way ticket to prison for the crew. IANAL. Even the sound can be excused as being heard inside the ship or other object. For all intents and purposes, there is no sound in space.
@Setzer K that's a really mistaken thing to say. There's no way to dissipate heat in space other than by radiation or Flash coolers, which also radiate heat. Now I'm not disputing that radar could be very difficult in space, but stealth is not an option in space. The only way to hide anything in space is keeping the composition and purpose of the mass aboard the ships a secret, but once again the existence, velocity, and amount of mass and the characteristics of the engines that moving around are always obvious, the moment the engines come on. Credit is to Atomic Rockets, the project Rho Project.
@@allennelson1987 The stealth ships are only able to remain in stealth when using only thrusters or aren't moving altogether. The moment the engines fire up their positions are detected. This was explained over and over in the show. Stealth only means the hull plating can mask heat signatures when in idle or adrift, so they look like space rocks or debris and is strategic only when their propulsion systems are offline. The only case where magical stealth happened was with Eros due to the protomolecule
@@uadhlagash7280 if you can see it's position and movement at one time, that's enough to calculate its position and movement for all time. The only possible exception is secular variation, and it's very small.
@Setzer K if there's crew, there's waste heat coming from the crew's bodies. Where's there is waste heat, there is heat radiation, so that's detection, with or without windows.

@@ArchTeryx00 - Knife fight in a phone booth and the Roci won. Hell yeah.
2:15 Almost missed the FedEx logo lmao
Tbh though, I was expecting an Amazon Space logo instead lol
Great edits!
Although the name Rocinante comes from Don Quixote I do wonder if the writers were Rush fan's as its the ship in the song's Cygnus X-1 and Hemispheres
" On my ship, the 'Rocinante', Wheeling through the galaxies,
headed for the heart of Cygnus, Headlong into mystery."
Have said it before, will say it again:
Expanse has the best scenes of space warcraft. Better than any other show or movie.
I honestly wish the external shots during the fights were silent, as space is a vacuum yadda yadda, you just see the turrets blasting away and missles chasing their targets silently through the inky black of deep space.
Anyone, that doesn’t understand that the “Roci” is in its self in fact it’s own character... well, to them I say,
Dém no beltalowda. No kopeng. Da be BIG bosmang welwala!
“Ohh.. Bosmang, Dédawang deting im ta showxa”
Haha 🤣
.. for the non belters out there..
“Ohh.. A$$#@@|, That’s what she said.”

shaddup long bone, we know yous a welwala, lol
Woah, that's trippy to speak aloud
get a fucking life you fucking nerd
The scene after 4:40 just makes me climax. That pointed hit after that badass maneuver makes me go woah!!!
Rocinante was the Don Quixote's horse... wonderful book
Ah the Glorious Dakka boat Now with The RAILGUN!!!
Gotta love Belter USE FedX Box to transport troop
Damn, those PDC's are awesome.....
Rocinante, she is the best support role of the whole serie.
Wholesome ship.
it's suprising that you don't need advance tech like most sci fi space battle to be more fun and tense also having accurate depiction of physics.
I love the sound of machine guns.
Simply amazing.
3:58 Virgin galactic reference!
By thr time earth joined Starfleet, they found so much space debris that navigating in the solar system was impossible with out shields. Lol
Since the ships in The Expanse travel always at brachistochrone trajectories, most of the travel happens with speeds above escape velocity. Which means the debris will leave the Solar System altogether in a few months or years, tops.
just finished creating paper model of the Rocinante .. its super awesome!
Shout out to the sound design of The Expanse. I always thought the Epstein drives, the PDCs and the voice radio effects sound so great 😊
Damn the captain of that Leonidas must've felt bad. Imagine being so outclassed by the other side's tech that a single of their frigates can cripple your battleship with a little ingenuity.
to be fair a well aimed pile of sand can wipe out a fleet.
Well the Leonids wasn’t beaten by just a frigate, in conventional engagement it would have won, but the Roci has Holden, the button pushing coffee fuelled ex UNN madman, only a insane or genius person would come up with the manuver undertaken by the Roci
The fact that they are using real physics is awesome
yeah except that whole "no sound in space" thing lol
When your special effect team respect physics.
best pilot in the system
Can't wait to see the battle vs the pella from the 6th book.
Best crew in the Solar System.
...looking forward to season four!!
Rocinante may not as good as those stealth ship, but hell, that ship and the crew is hell of fighter. With Rail gun upgrade in season 4, I actually hope there will be another new combat upgrade for Rosy in season 5
You have to hand it to the MCRN- they make bloody good ships.
So glad shields are not to be found in the ship combat!
Is this from a show or what I'm lost?
Nevermind it's from the expanse.
I can get into this show.....and I love sci-fi, lol
A Legitimate salvage.
Only the best show ever made.
Rocinante fighting at the spin-station- so, they're tilting at windmills then?
I thought that it was explained that the decks of the Roci and other ships were stacked like in a silo (note the orientation when they escaped the Donniger) yet they always shoot the scenes as if the beam is horizontal to the decks?
probably makes more sense to the viewer. Seems weird and unusual otherwise.
Beautiful
I wanna see a new version with all the battles after IFF
Alex is the best pilot in sci-fi.
@Setzer K it is never enough to blend in in space, if there's crew, there's detection.
What game is this from?
Its from a TV show called The Expanse, you can watch it on Amazon Prime
@@FirstPassOfficial Thanks. Its interesting when you divource the CGI from live action how fake and Gamey it looks.
So I need a question answered. In episode 6 season 3 when Alex is taking Bobbie into the Roccy's med bay, why is She earing a black UNN tank top t-shirt?
if its from after the events of the roci rescuing the under sec and bobby, prior to that bobby defected to the un and of course they would give her clothes and stuff.
@@Privatepain1234 so basically what you are saying is that she basically went through 3 episodes wearing her martian uniform for lord only knows how many days they spent on earth. Only to go visit Jue Pierre Mao on his private spaceship without taking any extra clothes except for her suit of armor. Get rescued by the roccy and some how miraculously get's UNN clothing from a martian ship that has been basically hiding on Tycho Station with a bunch of belters that hate both mars and earth.
@@fbi805 she could have been wearing it underneath the suit.
@@Privatepain1234 i guess you don't know much about the military and someone who is as dedicated to their oath as Bobbie Draper..
@@fbi805 dude she defected from Mars with little more than the clothes on her back. Yes she is dedicated to her oath, its part of why she defected. But if your offered a fresh bit of clothing your telling me your not going to take it? This is science fiction not real life. Get over it.
Rocinante > Serenity, btw Alex is one HELL of a pilot!
Oh that's not fair
What's this from?
Wish season 5 had more Roci battles.
Flight Assist Off.. All power to engines.. Hardpoints deployed..
Yes, I named my engineered Python Rocinante..
Fed ex was still there
The sad think about the expanse is that there are far to less space battles
Nothing fancy about that ship.... Get ‘er done!
Roci did not get enough love this season. What a shame.
If they get up to book 6 next season, we are going to get BY FAR the coolest Roci scene in the entire series.
@@dtpiers6136 looking forward to it.
Yay you did it! BTW what is the music you have playing in the background for most of your videos?
I usually use the Supreme Commander soundtrack. More recently I’m trying out the Deus Ex Human Revolution soundtrack.

The Expanse, its on Amazon Prime. Hope it helps :)
