What an amazing time this song and album represent. I was 16 when this came out and little did I know in just a few short months I would suddenly move 3000 miles away from my family and began a life on my own when I turned 17. It was an absolutely incredible time of life, I was fearless and trusted life implicitly, lived totally free in great beach town in San Diego, rode my bike all the time with my Sony Walkman and listened to Culture Club, Eurythmics, Thompson Twins, Tears for Fears. Visage, etc and I wondered how the future would turn out. Anytime I hear these songs from 84/85 it takes me right back to that time, I feel and remember the excitement of the unknown, of life, of the whole future in front of me
Boy George an Culture Club looked fantastic. Love Boy George outfit. Those girls are so lucky. Wished I was there. Amazing performance. Thanks for sharing;
Wow...BG looked fabulous. That outfit is stunning on him. This song still remain timeless in my eyes. Great performance BG/CC. Hope they sing this song for the 30th anniversary. Thanks for sharing this awesome video. I'll add this to my favorite list.
Waking Up with the House on Fire is their best album tied with Colour By Numbers. This lead of track was catchy but easily attacked for it's seemingly juvenile chorus. It's intro sounds very similar to previous release of It's A Miracle. And as effective for the song as it may be, the Helen Terry shrieking does not exactly scream Top 40 hit. It performed ok because they were popular, but really was not the best representation of the album and began the backlash against the group. Don't Talk About It, The Dive would have been stronger choices. And The Medal Song and Mistake No. 3 would have performed better if they had not been preceded by this song in my opinion.
An interesting point of view! I Love THE WAR SONG, but can't stand helen's screaming in it. I Always thought THE DIVE would've been a great single. I think the album didn't sell as much because the general public was sick and tired of George by then. He appeared in the neespapers all the time. The album WAS a hit though. 9 months later, it'd already sold SEVEN MILLION copies.
@@JCesar-xf2bk yah. I wasn't around in the 80s but based off youtube videos I can YELL he was huge. Even in a 1983 interview George himself said ppl were probably bored of him😂
Why would anyone post a stupid post about Waking Up With The House On Fire being a terrible record? It had great songs like The Medal Song, Mistake Number 3 and others. It may not have had lost of commercial success but it was a very good album with growth and meaning. I still have the original copy on vinyl after almost 30years since its official release....
I love how Jon Moss isn't playing drums here but dancing, most of these shows where mimed, great to see Boy George singing live, even if it is over his own voice.
During that same era...look at Chic, Shalamar, Starship, Kool & the Gang, David Bowie, Dazz Band, Paul Hardcastle etc. That's unforgettable music. Real music making.
Omg he is so beautiful, no surgery & looks so much better then girls i knew back then. Im all women & i lov Boy George, he Rocks it all the time. After all this time i seen cc in A.C.NJ they gave a excellent show ♥️ Now im obsessed with Boy bigtime ♥️♥️ 2018
"Kissing To Be Clever" was the first album I ever bought and I was a defender of Boy George's style and androgyny, but this was the beginning of the end for him in the 80s. He looks like Wynonna Judd.
@@socssniffin It's not the case here...this is partially lip synched...George is actually singing LIVE over the pre-recorded instrumental part of the song...
@nwlman I have to admit that Colour By Numbers and Kissing To Be Clever still blow me away today and I agree with you regarding WUWTHOF. At the time I liked it but I hardly listen to it at all now. Back then 'The Dive' was my favourite - now I only listen to 'Unfortunate Thing' 'Don't Talk About It' and on occasions 'Mannequin'. Looking back it is obvious that they sadly rushed that whole album and allowed the synths to take over too much . I also saw George in 1984; I was 12! Loved it!
We all have our own opinions, and you think my comment about Roy Hay is stupid, that is your opinion, but Roy Hay is my favorite CC member and that is the reason for my comment.
@2008ljr It entered the UK charts at Number 3 and then rose to Number 2 - so it didn't get to the top spot; this was kept off the Number 1 position by Wham's Freedom.
@nwlman I guess everyone has their own favourite Boy George look - and I guess this isn't yours ha ha haa! In 1984 George did change his look a heck of a lot and some people have said that's why he lost fans as they couldn't keep up with him - personally I think it kept us interested; it certainly kept the press interested; all those front pages just cos he'd bleached his hair!! As for the song; George himself has said that he doesn't like it now, but back then it was perfect to me!
@CarlOrff Well just as you said, we all have our opinions. Mine is the same now aas it was back then in 1984. I was 14. And LOVED LOVED LOVED WUWTHOF. I still do. I love all their CD's I disagree with you tho on Georges look. I dont think it was as awful as some think. I loved this whole time of the band. I thought his makeup in the videos for "The War Song" and "Mistake No. 3" were the best ever. I guess some felt it was too much. but i think, "Hes BG,!!"
@POISENMIND2 :-( No fair, LUCKY YOU! Wish I could have gone to the tour :-( They had just left Australia not long before this, my evil mother didn't let me go to the concert when Culture Club came here. I did skip school to see them at the Airport at only 9 years old. That's the closest I got in 1984!
@CarlOrff suppose your right really personal taste I went to see them in Wembley that year and I thought it was great I was only 15, but compared to Kissing to be Clever and Colour By Numbers this was a terrible disappointment, He said in his second book he wont be dictated to by his audience, fair enough, but this look and album was the death nail for a great band, the Album is notorious, the Medal song God, should have released the track Manequin it the only good track on the LP.
I totally disagree. WUWTHOF album is WAY better than KTBC because aside from the hits there isn't much on KTBC: Take Control? White Boys Can't Control It? I'm the Boy? It's all so-so although You Know I'm Not Crazy is cool. WUWTHOF has great songs: The Dive, The Medal Song, Don't Talk About It, Mannequin and the Best - MISTAKE NO 3 (beautiful and smart.) Dangerous Man and Crime Time are great album tracks. War Song was bad choice for lead single and Wham! had just arrived so the album suffered.
Leyla Taylor boy George and Jon moss they're so cute together are you thinking that they should be marry to each other I don't think so besides Jon moss is already married to Barbara his wife and has three children you must be joking
what a mess, this hair style is just think a few months earlier he looked great, they got too big for their boots culture club did and this song and the terrible lp it came from were the result. colour by numbers and the first lp far far better. Boy George just took drag too far here and people switched of big time.

Did this song reach no. 1 in the UK?. I think it was a low top 10 in the US.
I remember those kind of outfits the girls were wearing, in those days it was so summery and cool, bit dated looking now.
