The great caramel disaster of '23.
I'd love it. None of them were Brothtails so it's an overall win. Was really cool to see how the red white and merry got utilized in a way to elevate it. You'd hope there's more out there like that. Or there's things like Mt. Olive's pickle cocktails.
Sincere Question: what is the cocktail in the thumbnail? :( Specifically the green and red one with whipped cream and the sign HO HO HELL in the background because I'm wise to this thumbnail switching business that's been going on all over the Toobs.
Interesting format, it could be interesting expanding on the ones with potential but it's cool seeing that being studied to reach the broader crowd they're all "yeah, ok, not great not bad".
A bit of context for the Campari drink: I don't know if it's just an Italian thing, but in the default Christmas baskets there are, almost always, some dried figs. In general they're pretty common around Christmas so I get why they went for that association
So on a side note, I recently started dating a girl who likes Negronis. I'm not a huge fan, so I decided to try to make it more interesting and used Uncle Val's gin and found it was a big improvement. Ever tried that particular gin? We've decided to call it a Valgroni.
I don't care how it comes out, hearing "Malibu" and "sweetened condensed milk" in the same sentence sends an actual shiver down my spine.
"Ah sweet, a war crime cocktail."
I am fairly certain that those words in the same sentence is grounds for thermonuclear war.
I would swap out both with sugar and there would probably be a similar taste anyway 😅
Innit?
The condensed milk and lime juice is what sent shivers down my spine; as citrus curdles milk, even condensed milk.
Started without a bar spoon. Lost his blender. Caramel on the walls. Measured condensed milk with a knife of all things. And a Christmas miracle at the end!.
Using a kitchen knife as an improvised bar tool definitely has strong "uncle at the holidays" vibes. Good times.
Just give it a good 3 stabbins of condensed milk...
The word you're looking for is "drunkle".
You should add a “how will this make you feel” rating to all your cocktails from now on for all us 35y/o+ subscribers from now on.
Deal. But it won’t be a rating just an alert system. “This is great, but be warned, you’ll wish you were dead in 3 hours”
@@howtodrinkyes please do
I'm just about to turn 30, and I need that warning. The ol' liver and metabolism ain't what it used to be.
I’ve realised that this show feels a lot like going to your aunt & uncle or grandparents’ basement with your cool cousin during a holiday get together and trying all the random alcohol they have in the fridge down there. This episode especially! It’s very silly and warm and fuzzy. Thank you for that!
If you are drinking Malibu, you aren't trying to appreciate base spirit. You are trying to drink liquid candy that makes you drunk
You spelled "alcoholic suntanning lotion" wrong lol
All jokes aside, Malibu seriously tastes like what I imagine Hawaiian Tropic or Banana Boat sun block would if you distilled it like you would liquors/spirits. It's so similar to me that I wouldn't be surprised if they use they same or similar flavor/scent chemicals
I know a guy who used to drink Malibu and Sprite. I called it Fairy Piss because it sounds horrible.
@@christinebenson518 An idea for the future cursed cocktails episode for sure.
I just like the taste of coconut
I love the chaos of Brands creating their own recipes because 95% of the time it will fail horrendously yet they push it as "traditional"
Every brand wants variants on the shelves of stores, so that they might displace the products of competitors. Hence dozens of flavors of rum.
and sometimes it becomes traditional - see the key lime pie!
As someone who used to work at Starbucks, I assure you that people would want the caramel martini. You'd be amazed at the amount of people who ask for an inch of caramel drizzle in their cups. 🤢
I think reading that has given me diabetes...
Girl, I had a customer literally order a total of 18 pumps of syrup in a venti mocha. It took up half the cup.
I fear for their well being.
Im going to buy the bottles to make that. But ill mix in the syrup.
@@carveyloveromg i had someone (not starbucks but a local chain of similar quality) ask for 6 pumps of *lavender* syrup with a single shot of espresso mixed with 24 oz of milk
milk with coffee more than coffee with milk
@@jovi_monet My go-to order as a broke college student was 4-6 shots of espresso (depending on day). I'd then fill the rest of the cup with whatever cream or milk was available.
That one cranberry slowly rolling and then jumping off the table at 14:20 got me in TEARS
Thank you for that. Just played it on repeat 😂
You know Greg is getting drunk when he starts swearing because of how bad something is and it’s my favorite part
I like watching Greg at 2X speed so he sounds like a bartender on speed .
I find the 1.25-1.5x works better for this. He's uncannily fast.
He becomes Greg shapiro
We just call them bartenders, otherwise it's like saying ATM Machine.
You listen to Greg at 2x speed so he sounds like a bartender on speed.
I listen to Greg at 0.75x speed so he sounds like drunk Seth Rogan.
We are the same.
At that point wouldn't he be? It isn't the same kind of speed but it is still speed.
everyone should send Greg a bottle of caramel syrup for Christmas 🎅
Make sure you pack it so the cap comes off in transit. 👍
I once contemplated writing a country song entitled :"I'll drink it because I paid for it!" based on a drinking experience involving a coffee with Triple Sec on a blizzardy night in Ohio. There were, in fact, people riding snow mobiles in the streets, inside city limits, and my friend and I staggered both to and from the establishment through feet of snow.
If ever there were a justification for that song, these drinks cover it.
I know that feel brother. Sheridan's and bourbon are an odd couple but goddammit I paid money for this.
If anyone needs a non-alcoholic cocktail to go alongside their eggnog, here's one my family has made for years: Cranberry juice, grenadine, plenty of lime, ginger ale. I won't begin to tell you we measure anything, but since they're regret free, playing around with the ratios and garnishes to find what you like best is fun. I'd start with 2:1:1:2.
you could also make boiled custard, its basically non-alcoholic eggnog
I regularly just make non alcoholic eggnog if anyone wants it to be alcoholic they can make their glass as strong as they like we have many of the popular eggnog alcohol choices in the house and they can pour some in themselves if they want. I personally don't want my eggnog alcoholic at all because I limit my alcohol intake a good amount and I want to have a good bit of eggnog since I make it myself
I have a whole bottle of cranberry juice at home that no one is drinking. Going to try this and use it up!
Does that cranberry juice have added sugar, or is it as tart as the cranberries themselves?
@@ashrowan2143 How do you make the non-alcoholic eggnog? Same as custard?
I've been fighting a stomach bug for the past few days and that caramel martini thing marks the first time I've had to pause an episode of H2D to go retch. Good job Smirnoff, I can only assume that was the reaction you were aiming for.
Thirty Helens agree: The world does not need the creamy caramel martini.
ETA: I'm only buying Greg's xmas album if he records it drunk.
Greg's not recording it sober.
The best part about Greg's vids is by far the annotations. I don't know if it's him or Meredith, but the creativity that goes into them is what MAKES this channel enjoyable. I love the drinks... and I swear I am one day going to make that ice cream based one he declared the greatest in existence, but the annotations are worth every moment of viewership.
I'm pretty sure in the past he's said he does the annotations, but I could be wrong.
I agree! I adore the notes
I wonder if Greg has ever gone i needed champagne in a pinch and went "Meredith, hand me that really dry white wine and the drink mate!"
I cracked up when Greg was pondering how to improve the Fig Negroni and the tasting notes said "Bitters?" and then, of course, Greg did just that. The tasting notes are calling you out, Greg!
I am perpetually amused at how I just don't drink (usually, when I do it's rare and it's a Bacardi Strawberry Daquiri cause I'm basic) and yet I very much enjoy your videos. I consider it a good thing that I come back for the personalities rather than the content - though I'll admit to a little bit of schadenfreude from time to time
Very apparent very quickly that we're in for a crazy episode a "skosh" of lemon and stirring with a knife. Never change Greg
Heya Greg! Three years after I first got into mixology (thanks to you), i finally bought my very first bottle of Chartrouse!
Why did we not get a slow motion replay of the caramel syrup eruption? Great stuff as always!
In the US, "condensed milk" is always sweetened. The unsweetened stuff is called "evaporated milk".
You can get unsweetened Condensed Milk in Canada but it's super hard to Find. Evaporated Milk is just regular Milk in a Can. Condensed Milk has a thick Syrup like consistency great for making Vietnamese Iced coffee.
@@thegreatcanadianlumberjack5307there is no such thing as unsweetened condensed milk anywhere, by definition. It cant be syrupy without sugar.
You do know milk naturally contains some amount of sugar right? Depending how 'condensed' they make the milk it can get thick on its own. 'Sweetened' just indicates added sugar. @@7531monkey
@@7531monkey I mean, condensed milk is also milk that's had 60% of its liquid volume boiled away. Given that milk is a whole lot of proteins (which coagulate) and sugars, it probably would still turn relatively syrupy even without the sugar. The sugar is predominantly a preservative, as sugar typically doesn't spoil/mold/etc. very easily. It's why sweetened condensed milk has a shelf life just this side of forever.
Would love to see you invent some Holiday cocktails.
I second this, always nice seeing some Greg-Creativity
Hell yes, love this twist on a beloved classic. All these "someone thought this bizarre combo would be good and it's *really* not/it surprisingly actually is" videos are very informative in terms of learning how different ingredients interact, and getting a better sense of how to design a cocktail from first principles.
Agreed. Greg's tasting notes have taught me SO much as an amateur home "bartender". My wife can ask me to make her something fancy, and I can whip up a new cocktail on the spot that actually turns out decent. I attribute that 100% to watching Greg do the same for years.
Literally just walked out of the Enchanted Tiki Room because of this channel. Now off to get a dole whip. Thanks, Greg!
Fiance was very interested in what a Coquito is, so now I'll show them that episode. In other news, I found a bottle of the new Yellowstone Toasted bourbon, and a bottle of Booker's today. Happy Holidays everyone.
Tatratea, a Slovak liquor that has a ton of flavors of tea liquors, of various alcohol strengths and they have some great cocktails
Boris teleport juice!
@@issintf925that’s the first thing I thought of too lmfao
The ones with 60% abv or more really can take you off-guard...
@@TLGProduktions i know far too well, but the flavors they have sometimes are just so good, i really enjoy the Forest Fruit one
Ah, Tatratea... 35% Tea Bitter is the best, enjoyed neat, in small quantities.
My mother in law and myself did something like this one year. We found about a dozen "holiday" cocktail recipes and made them up at our christmas eve party and had people try then in shot size. There was only 1 that most people liked and it was basically hot coco with Kahlua and vodka dusted with cinnamon. Not really a cocktail, but tasty.
Hot cocoa, Kahlua, Vodka and cinnamon. That sounds like a winner combo!!
@Cthulu1985 funniest part is that wasn't one if the recipes. We just winged it.
Should review the premade holiday drinks, like winter jack, evans eggnog, the eggo eggnog, and whatever else they put at the front to catch your eye
Honestly? I think the condensed sweetened milk for rimming the coconut shreds in is genius! I am not sure it can be practical for everything (at least the ones I tried to do with gold decoration spheres would maybe not work as much... maybe it can...), but I will consider it in case I am stuck in a loop where syrup is not enough to make the rimming stick on the glass. Thanks for enlightening me on that one! :D
Greg's unabashed joy in all things Christmassy is like adding ango bitters to a cocktail - a welcome addition.
Fun fact about Jameson Whiskey: In 1886, James Sligo Jameson, the then heir to the Jameson family, went on an expedition with Henry Morton Stanley (The murderer- I mean con-man- I mean explorer who "found" Dr. Livingstone and helped King Leopold of Belgium take over and massacre the Congo) to Sudan. While on this trip he supposedly bought a 10 year old slave girl and then paid a bunch of cannibals to let him watch them eat her. Then he died of fever. Obviously we don't know for certain that this actually happened (The cannibal thing, he definitely died) but like, if the story is believable enough to still be known almost a century and a half later...
Another good Christmas cosmopolitan is the Santa Clausmopolitain. Rim a martini glass with sugar. Mix 1 oz gin, 1.5oz pure cranberry juice, .5 oz Cointreau, juice from half a lime, and shake with a sprig of fresh rosemary in the shaker. Really balanced.
Has Greg done the Hershey cocktails yet? They’re like $15 each at the park and like drinking a delicious glass of diabetes😂
They are so good. One of the nice things about living in central PA
I drive from Chicagoland to Hershey every few years just to eat and drink chocolate treats- ESPECIALLY those damn cocktails. Part of what makes the 9-10 hour drive worthwhile!
Every year I now make mulled wine for the holidays. Its a perfect representation of winter. A nice medium bodied wine infused with orange, clove, Cinnamon, and whatever else I feel like. ITs awesome!!!
Having a tough time recently and I just want to say thanks for the lovely videos ❤ really takes my mind off things and I love your positive vibes
It's so funny when it comes to "christmassy" flavors around the world. Cranberries isn't very associated with christmas in Sweden. While Figs, dates, oranges and obviously all the christmas spices like cloves, cinnamon etc makes up the greater picture. I guess it has to do with what was shipped before we had supermarkets with daily or weekly shipments of fruits and greens.
Like oranges, clementines and most other citrus fruits usually came around when the harvesting seasons were and that happened to be around christmas for us in northern Europe, while we have lingon berries (sort of cranberries), blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries apples and pears pretty much everywhere but during winter and spring.
Had my drinkmate for a year now! I use it to carbonate drinks from time to time but really I love how you can use it to make SUPER carbonated water, stuff that will explode with bubbles when you pour it into the glass and will still be bubbling vigorously up to a minute after pouring. The sensation of that stuff fizzing in your mouth is the most refreshing feeling ever.
I dont like the feeling of angry water, and that water sounds furious.
I’ve never tried an immersion blender with ice, but I use my regular blender a lot less now. If you’re going for a really fine purée you might need a proper blender, but for surprisingly many things an immersion blender is sufficient and much easier to clean.
Love watching your show! You have inspired me to try to make some different cocktails for my family.
Evan Williams Egg Nog is my honest go to for Christmas, especially when it comes to, "Well, I'm in this Walgreen's and I'm not actually gonna make something for this party."
No joke, it is actually enjoyable, especially for a bottle that's right there at the check-out counter.
There's something really funny about "I don't have a bar spoon so I'm gonna guess/use a knife" and then he finds a bar spoon for the cherries.
Happiness comes when your work and words are of benefit to yourself and others.
I cant feel bad for anyone making a mess by NOT PUTTING THEIR FINGER ON THE CAP WHILE SHAKING!! 😮 id call it a stoner move, but i cant be stoned enough to do that lol
Love your content Greg dont change a thing
"I can't say Carmel, without that 'a' in the middle" -Greg
"Were gonna need an arnj wheel" -also greg
Jameson Black Barrel on its own is pretty solid, I keep a bottle kicking around in the cabinet
Happy holidays! ❤❤❤❤🎄🎄🎄
Thank you for taking several for the team Greg. Whooooooooboy.
Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.
When you are content to be simply yourself and don't compare or compete, everybody will respect you.
Brands really do be thinking people just want a glass of almost pure sugar with a slight amount of booze on ice. Sad part is, they're not entirely wrong.
It’s basically “I want to eat a tub of ice cream but that’s not socially acceptable so I’ll have a … snocalada
@@HFV_Junkyardin I look at that and can only say "Why do this, when Baileys' exists?!" Because I'm a horrible gremlin who can and will just drink a pint glass of Irish cream on ice, because it's officially my stress-relief drink. Or, if I'm really feeling like a complete gremlin, it's going _over_ the ice cream.
If you are going to make another christmas/winter themed episode you'll have to try Feuerzangenbowle. It is made with wine, spices, oranges and a huge lump of sugar drenched in burning overproof rum so it caramelizes and drips into the wine.
Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.
Super fun and entertainment show , love it
Jameson Black barrel with ginger beer used to be my drink of choice. Many memories.
Water ice!! Haven’t had that for years, not planning on it , but loved it as a kid
The fig Negroni sounds pretty nice. I go through Campari faster than any other bottle in my cabinet. Maybe a touch of allspice dram would this drink a bit more Christmas.
Only "holiday" cocktail I need. Moscow Mule made with Crannberry Vodka. Simple. Tart. Enjoyable. If you wanna give it a bit more of a holiday spice, and if you can find it, add clove bitters.
I knew immediately that the answer to the coconut rim was the condensed milk as "frosting." Also some one's ancestors are crying due to that coquito recipe.
This was great!
We recently taste tested the Red, White & Merry and had a similar reaction.
Cheers!
At the center of your being you have the answer; you know who you are and you know what you want.
Going for the sitcom lighting today
Oh, dude, this episode was GOLD.
LOL, fun breakdown of the stupidity of holiday themed drinks slapped on the gift packs. Especially the caramel. (Though as kids making sundaes, we did learn to hold a finger over the snap caps when shaking them.
You should do a cursed Christmas cocktail episode.
Don't let it turn into intestinal Krampus!
I love the comments on the sind when Greg is going over the drinks oh poor Helen pray for helen
HAHAHA, the cap fail happened to me last week with some salad dressing. At least my kids got a good laugh out of it. Balsamic all over the walls and furniture.
Yeah, the red white and merry is best mixed with other stuff. It makes an interesting mule.
gobsmacked at the sheer audacity of the smirnoff people to refer to their sugary vodka caramel abomination as a martini
I saw “coquito” and my Puerto Rican ass’ first reaction was “WHAT DID RUMCHATA DO TO MY BOY”
Rum is what is usually used, so I was morbidly curious to see how a peppermint coquito turned out since some people make different flavors. Nice to hear it wasn’t too overpowering
The peppermint coquito: we made these and found it sooooo much better tiki-ed up with the added rum, some crushed ice and a fuck-ton of mint leaves, garnished with a cinnamon stick because we were feeling boujee and we were already drunk 🤷♀️
Love these videos!
Just in case someone goes looking for it, I have to point out that there is no unsweetened condensed milk.
You can purchase evaporated milk (unsweetened) and condensed milk (evaporated milk with sweetener) in most stores though.
something about greg saying "rim your glass" in california bro accent made me giggle uncontrollably
You should do another one of these!! I just was looking at the Caramel Crown Royal Whiskey and wondering what I could make with it 😂it's got a lot of good words in it (caramel and whiskey lol) and I guess I could just old fashioned it, but I'd love to see what you'd do to make your own good christmas cocktails with christmas liquors!
Well Greg, I'd like to say thanks, i think. Since i started watching your show you have literally cost me thousands in booze trying out cocktails which i had never tried before. Have come to love a good whisky sour and have a shit pile of liquor now - thanks
OH MY GOD! The cap FaiLeD!! 10/10 Greg 😂😂
I was wondering when his beautiful singing voice would be back! *happy squeal* 😍
Tasting notes were on a new level of perfection this time.
Ahh, ahh, ahhh, uhh, uhh.
I love that bulldog gin bottle. Could you do a review of the best/most unique bottles you've ever seen? Then maybe make cocktails with those libations.
This was fun! I'd love to try that Fig Negroni with whiskey instead
Little Jimmy's italian ice trucks! I miss those.
As a resident of the Midwest, the "CARR-muhl" martini honestly doesn't look too bad if it were maybe cut with some other flavors. Replacing the butterscotch schnapps with some creme de cacao might be a first step, and rimming the glass with the caramel sauce instead of just plopping it into the bottom of the glass probably would have also helped. Helen would probably still get pretty ripshit on them, though...RIP Helen.
Also: as someone who purposefully drinks 100% cranberry juice (and not the Ocean Spray shit, the actual good stuff that can be used as floor wax stripper), that extra-tart Cosmo is properly exciting.
VarnishAway! Cranberry will be my family label 🤣👏👏👏
Right? I love the tart shit.
I recognize that ginger beer; Reed's is good stuff!
Final bought a Drinkmate, it's a very good little machine. Going to get another for a holiday gift, thanks for the discount!
18:10 the energy here, the way he said it almost like a bark, it's some clippable stuff
Clip! Clip!
I can't wait for the Christmas album! I hope I can buy it digitally.
Helen giving a new meaning to rimming the glass with that caramel
Good grief the Diabetails Hour! Not glad you had to actually taste these but just reading the ingredients would tell me NOPE! Hope the caramel clean up went well. Merry Christmas from over the pond. The pinnacle of drinks channels as always looking forward to the tastes of 2024.
Watching Greg getting more and more unhinged as the video goes on is the best
A good friend of mine used to make a weirdly tasty drink that he called a "christmas morning". I forget the ratios, but it was a mixture of creme de menthe, cocoa, graham cracker crumbles, and marsh mallow, in a smoked glass.
Love the show Greg, big fan! Sidenote- is midnight local coming back? It’s been a while
5:25 I work at a restaurant famous for our margarita variety one of ours uses coconut and we use honey as the binder for the rim
The VA ABC is displaying the peppermint bark martini. Basically an airport bottle of the rum chata and one of Titos, Shake over ice. It's pretty darn good for a one off holiday xrink
I love the idea of a fresh fig infused drink
I may not buy a music album, but I'd buy a cocktail recipie book! I'd bet a Greg's HTD cocktail book would fly off the bookshelves!
I'd love to hear your thoughts on a Snowball, the UK's beloved Christmas cocktail of Advocat and lemonade (but the UK kind, so, like, Sprite). It's sweet and fizzy and foamy and two of them will give you a stomach ache. Perfect Christmas cocktail experience.
Skosh, love it
