where is Meredith?
Watching this episode is giving me a hangover 😊
I independently discovered Viski glassware and really like them. My Nick & Nora and Coupe glasses are theirs. The other main contributer to my stock of glassware is Luigi Bormioli (WARNING: Emphatic Italian gestures are *mandatory* ). The stand-out are my Martini glasses, which are by Riedel.
Viski also make a very nice Lewis bag and ice-crushing mallet.
You might find that Winter Jack is better warm. Its brings out different flavors.
Why do all bartenders HATE alcohol? Seems like every bartender goes on and on about how terrible it all is.
im starting to feel like this show is a 50/50 of "how to drink" and "how not to drink"
I mean, I'd imagine that is half the battle.
That is about correct. And it's a result of me watching the numbers here and giving the people what they want. Believe me, I'd rather only drink the good stuff!
@@howtodrinki personally like both, im not a *total* sadist...but maybe a lil bit :3
@@howtodrinkSo really we have only ourselves to blame for your suffering.
I mean, What Not To Wear was a whole tv show that did that, telling you what clothes look ugly, and telling people what they should wear instead.
As fun as it is to see Greg suffer, I wouldn’t mind an episode where he takes the ideas of some of these terrible drinks and turns them into something more palatable
Agreed. There's be enough time since the last "Worst Bottles In My Bar" episode to gather enough candidates for another one.
yeah I'm wondering how that Jameson cold brew and the Crown Royal salted caramel would go together
Personally I like a nice split of the two I like the idea of Greg taking these not so great and I'm some cases absolutely atrocious drinks and improving on them either by making essentially the same thing with different ingredients or by adding different ingredients to make it better
I don’t even drink, I’m just here to watch Greg suffer 😅😂
For sure!
Have you ever thought about doing an episode investigating which drinks don't benefit from one to five dashes of angostura? There has got to be something you wouldn't add angostura to if you could.
The fresh cut grass thing got me 😂😂 Need Sam Riegel on the show!!
That would be such a fun colab! I loved the episode with Brennan Lee Mulligan on here.
I suppose if he finds something with some fishy notes, he could call out one of Dancer's... other creations.
@@wolfbd5950 omg 😭😭
I instantly broke on that. Just seeing the sam? tasting note and I had to pause because I couldn't stop laughing
One of my worst instincts is seeing shit like this on the shelf and thinking, "maybe it'd be a fun Christmas adventure to buy one and bring it to the family for some fun." I appreciate Greg taking one for the team
It's great Greg calls the CR bags "dice bags". D&D rules!
they do actually make great dice bags!
When we getting him on D20 with his IRL friend Brennan???
I don't drink at all, I'm just here to watch the potion maker do his thing. Thank you dad wizard for your brave sacrifice to drink the various gimmick poisons
If you don't drink, you have no reason to be here. I think you probably drink.
@@whysix3417, I also don't drink. lol I make characters and RP them with friends, and I started watching this channel because my character worked at a bar and I knew nothing about alcohol. I stayed because this channel is fun and I enjoy watching people talk about stuff they're passionate about. You don't have to have the same hobby to enjoy watching someone recording their hobby, ya know? Unless I also do archery and decorate homes now. lol
@@DindellaTheDefender make characters and rp them with with friends? I have no idea what this means. What does it mean, that your character worked at a bar? Are you meaning yourself?
@@DindellaTheDefender I think you are most certainly drunk right now😂. You are not making any since at all.
@@whysix3417 , characters are fictional people, just like you'd find in books and movies. RP stands for Roleplay. In this case, roleplaying is creating characters and stories/books privately with friends. You write as if you were that character and then they respond as if they were their own character in turn. It's a lot of fun.
Greg seems delightfully sloshed from the gecko, this will definitely be a good episode
a stiff drink of gecko will fuck you up so cut me some slack here
I'll be that guy. It's from the get-go. I'm sorry.
I LOVE this typo because every time people say "from the get-go," all I hear is gecko 😆
Gecko?
little green guy, has really small glasses@@TheLegitAlpha
Fun video. It does feel like the Jameson Cold Brew didn't get a fair shake here, though. We now know for sure it does NOT mix with Nog well, but I'd be interested in seeing it in a different context, or on its own. Maybe a coffee liquors/liqueurs episode? Maybe filmed first thing in the morning for our extra entertainment? Could be fun.
God as my witness, that Jamo Cold Brew with Irish cream over ice *chef's kiss*.
I didn't hear the rumour about Yellow 5 being addictive, but there was a huge rumour about it making genitals smaller. There was also rumours of causing asthma, and causing ADHD. There was a big food dye scare at the time for some reason
What's actually real with Yellow 5 is that it can cause allergic reactions in some people. So the regulations enforced are that the product must declare in the ingredients if it uses it, or else they will be seized
I thought it was one of the reds that was the problem? Or is it both? Cuz I myself have a skin reaction to one of the reds
I have been sober for 16 months with zero intention of going back. But I still always watch your new videos because they're absolutely fascinating and you're a funny charismatic guy. Just wanted to say thank you for the great vids
Congratulations!
Pretty sure he has some videos on Mocktails?
eyyyyy congrats!!
@@Sammie1053 thank you!!
@@kelseyjaffer thanks much 😊
Would love to see a video on you making good Christmas/holiday drinks. If Santa had a bar what would they serve the elves?
Replying so he might be more likely to see this
Fun idea! Lets bump it
Love this idea
Oh now that’s an idea!
How is Meredith doing? I've been missing her laughing at Greg's pain.
If I remember right she's probably busy with having a kid at the moment, she stopped drinking for a while on the show because she and her husband (not Greg) were trying for one. Maybe she talks about how that's going on Greg's podcast.
@@bigbrassballsunless I missed something somewhere, Meredith isn’t married to a man lol.
@@bigbrassballs I believe Meredith has a wife
@@bigbrassballs *wife, not husband
@bigbrassballs i know she was pregnant, but just had not heard any updates for a while and the Midnight Local podcast hasnt had an episode since September
Winter Jack - How I described it:
Someone made a whiskey and water, sliced up apples, and waved them over it. I added some to an apple cider tea we have... and it was delicious.
Love the critical role FCG shoutout. Just got into CR and now im seeing references to them everywhere. I had no idea how influential they were.
Okay, _now_ i believe you are a real gamer. You referred to the Crown Royal packaging as a "dice bag," so quickly and without hesitation that I recognize you as one of us.!
Yeah, we really old folks called them marble bags for similar reasons.
Ok, episode idea: Weirdest Flavored Vodkas. I need to see Greg react to Three Olives' Loopy. My partner says it tastes like Froot Loops. I think it tastes like a broken Dark City memory-injection of eating Froot Loops while being electrocuted.
"Like" for the description!
I was getting worried when you pulled out the Evan Williams Egg Nog bottle, because I actually enjoy it. It's not great, but it's not supposed to be; that's why it's by the checkout counter at Walgreen's.
I was thinking the same thing about the winter jack, I think he just likes bitters to be honest. I think it's fine on it's own it's also supposed to be served warm not over ice it says so on the bottle.
Too funny
I like the EW eggnog too, already had a couple bottles of it this season.
You enjoy your egg nog that tastes like big red gum . It's not egg nog
Now, I've never noted Greg to be disingenuous by pulling punches on drinks and flavor profiles... But holy fuck did the claws come out today 😂 Love the episode man😊 Cheers and happy holidays 🙏🍻
Caught that little FCG reference and almost spit out my drink.
I dig Rumple Minze in a dark hot chocolate. Oh, and some food dyes do effect kids. Red #40 was the offender when I was younger. My cousin had reactions to it.
Or maybe the fact they were getting sweet stuff?
Whenever Greg uploads a new video it's like I am seeing a friend whom I love hanging out with. Thanks for the fun times!
Seriously though, 2 parts maple whiskey & 1 part peppermint vodka is kinda nice. Add 1 part of this with 2 parts eggnog, stir with a cinnamon stick & top with freshly grated nutmeg. Enjoy Christmas in a glass!
I enjoy the Winter Jack in heated-up apple cider, like a toddy.
I like to do the same with Fireball
Since you have so many seasonal bottles you bought just to try, I kinda want to see the return of The Wheel or The Skull, but you have to make one of the holiday rejects works as the base spirit (for those that actually could be used as such). The Smirnoff Red, White, and Merry ended up being such a wild surprise in the other video, I wonder if there's some others that could be transformed (against all odds) into something drinkable.
Oml I love the notes in the corner saying "Sam?" after he calls out the fresh cut grass notes XD
Gotta love the CR reference.
Even though I don't drink all that much his descriptions of the drinks are my favorite part honestly
The food dye thing isn't a lark. I had a family member that had issues acting out when they were very young, and the only connecting element was whenever they had something with Red dye #5 in it. We only figured it out when they got a medicine for an ear infection that was "bubblegum" flavored, using Red #5 as the only food dye. This was back in the 1980s for reference.
Also, try the Crown Royal Salted Caramel with Hood Egg Nog. The egg nog cancels out the hard edges of the Crown Royal.
“The goggles do nothing!”
I love this channel
Came to the comments just for this one. I could actually hear McBain saying it in my head.
Always adore your Christmas time content Greg it's such a vibe! I'm gonna try to make your wassail again this year would love to see more wild traditional drinks!
A good teacher is like a candle it consumes itself to light the way for others.
i work at a liquor store, and i love these kinds of videos because i know i can count on our palettes being pretty similar so i can give people less baseless recommendations. so, much love mr greg from htd ❤️
Been enjoying this for years and more recently midnight local. Just wanted to let you know. Have a great holiday season Greg and team.
Salted Caremel Whiskey mixes well with Cream Soda
I've had the winterjack before, and enjoyed it....Will need to try this with the bitters
Do one more episode with the ciders warmed up. I love Winter Jack when it's warmed up.
I agree, Winter Jack is so much better warmed up.
Greg probably gonna need some Christmas Mocktails episode about it. Bad liquors could mess his head like the Manhattan episode one.
Can you make like country related drink like germany, poland, franch, sweden, japan... and doing cocktail from their alcohol wich they own? I Think it would be cool
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
Loving these holiday videos lately!
That Donald Duck impression at 11:24 was amazing.
Thanks for taking the dive for us.
These seasonal sampler episodes have been fun to watch, but my favorite parts are the discoveries of surprisingly good options despite low expectations.
The phrase "...to perfection." is almost a guarantee of mediocrity.
Seasoned to perfection.
Grilled to perfection.
Blended to perfection.
If perfection were so easy to achieve, the great culinary schools of the world wouldn't exist.
I remember liking the Evan Williams Nog a lot! I ended up settling for Pennsylvania Dutch one year when they didnt have it in. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
Thank you for blessing our screens today!
The Crown Royal dice bag is awesome!
I love rumchata... got the peppermint bark one last year and I really enjoyed it. This year I found a pumpkin spice version, haven't had a chance to try it but I hope it is good!
That FCG reference was fantastic during the Winter Jack bit, didn't know you guys were Critters!
Greg made Sam’s Eldermancy cocktail ages ago. He’s done 3 different episodes of critical role cocktails
I like these episodes where you sort of brutally review things because I want to branch out and try new drinks and stuff but i always worry about wasting it. However these help me because I get to hear how things smell and taste from someone with wayyyy more experience than me and its useful
the goggles do nothing!...Had me rolling!! Love these side notes when sharing your thoughts/experiences!
The Winter Jack actually makes for a very nice addition to a hot cup of black tea. Relaxing drink for a cold night.
loving these holiday vids!
Great episode! Love your content and have been following for a few years now. I also strongly dislike flavored whiskeys, but I did find one good use for the Crown Royal Salted Caramel. It’s a twist on a Brandy Alexander: equal parts (1 oz each): heavy cream, crème de cacao, and the caramel whiskey. Very sweet? No doubt, but kind of the point of that particular drink and we have a bottle exclusively for that variant. It’s been a hit at our Christmas parties!
Greg, you hit the nail on the head with your explanation. The crappy feeling of a hangover is caused by dehydration. If you drink a total of 4 shots of Everclear, it's gonna suck, but your body essentially has to purge 6oz of pure ethanol. If you drink 6 spiked eggnogs, your body has to purge the 6oz of ethanol, plus all the sugar and cream inherent to the eggnog.
Overall, getting 6 spiked eggnogs out of your body requires your body to expend more water than 4 shots of Everclear and so will dehydrate you more and cause you to feel a worse hangover.
Between watching videos about cave diving and cameras Gregs delightfully drunk demeanor is a breath of fresh air
Reviewing what you have learned and learning anew, you are fit to be a teacher.
Saying “fresh cut grass” out loud and the taste note “Sam?” popping up onscreen is an underrated reference
The winterjack has been something I have kept around since I found it 4-5 years ago. It's been a real hit at thanksgiving and christmas parties. Pretty much everyone who tried a some with ice liked it. I think there's a disconnect between what you were expecting and what most folks who aren't a professional mixologist are expecting due to the sheer number of oddball drinks you've tried and the stock of mixers and base spirits you have ready access too.
Oh the food dye thing is completely legit
For a decent chunk of my childhood, I didn't like spending the weekend at my dad's house because my stepmom was militant about not letting us have anything with artificial food dyes, especially red #40. We hated her for it so much that eventually she caved. Recently - as in within the past few months - I noticed that I full-on get the jitters if I have anything containing red #40. I sent her a full apology and have avoided it ever since, which is alarmingly hard to do!
Which was hard to do; the apology, or the avoiding red #40?
(Edit) ...or both?
@@TJDST4 Oh I don't have much trouble apologizing to people. Lots of practice! lol
Nah, red 40 is in everything, even things that aren't red. A few weeks ago I wanted to buy some boxed yellow cake mix for a recipe and was alarmed to discover that every single brand on the shelf except for one had red dye in it. In a *_yellow_* cake mix! The one that didn't still had yellow dye in it, of course. Possibly the same one Greg mentioned in this video.
Pretty cool when the cube cracks during the closeup around 18:10
I tried that Jack abomination last year. I found it irredeemable. Bless you for seeking the good in it.
this episode was hilarious as always 😂the peppermint smirnoff and rumchata are some of the favorites in my household for spiked holiday coffees/hot chocolates
My mom bought the Winter Jack to try and fell so much in love with it, she drove 35 miles to stock up on it, and she can't hold her liquor much anymore since her gastric sleeve, so when she decides she wants a glass of it it's quite funny to watch her very quickly get pretty sloshed.
I just want to say that for the record, the interjections into the intro music was a cool touch and I appreciated it. For what its worth
Can’t even imagine drinking some of these! Have a great Holiday!
I like how they did the intro today, they were able to give it room too breathe without distracting form it so much that it becomes background noise
Love the Ambrosia bottle in the back! Hades is a sick game.
Thanks, Greg!
Winter Jack, had a serving suggestion of warming it, when I had some a few years back in UK, did it once then finished the bottle over ice lol!
I know there are some terrible things you drank in this video, but it it nice to hear what you think. You may have just saved me from a couple of those bottles. I do like the Winter Jack but agree it’s pretty crisp, green apple-y…so thanks for the angostura suggestion. If you like Fireball (don’t judge me!) it’s another way to add that cinnamon bit.
i tend to stock up on mulled wines during Christmas. sure there is nothing stopping me from getting a bottle of wine and spicing it myself but it is so much easier to crack a pre-spiced wine pop it on the stove and enjoy while sitting outside a cold spring/fall evening.
I used to love Winter Jack, so seeing “Sam” as the first note for it really threw me. I feel called out in a good way.
I loved the donald duck noise you made with the smirnoff wildberry
I don't even drink alcohol but watching him feels like hes making potions and I have a special interest in mixology and I love it here. This is very pleasant for my autism
I dig this intro style, where it's kinda interlaced with what you're doing for this episode. good shit dude!
Thanks for taking one for the team Greg, was going to get a bottle of that Crown Royal to try but I'm now glad I didn't.
So, the CR Salted Caramel, personally speaking, goes really well with apple juice, either as a chilled shot with apple juice chaser or just a spiked apple juice. I actually bought 2-3 bottles of it last year and was really excited when I saw it had returned this year.
That’s really all I see Crown’s flavored whiskeys being great for is just spiking a mixer, whether it be Coke, Sprite (peach Crown and Sprite is awesome), coffee, a fruit juice, etc.
Your Winterjack review reminds me of a Quebec brewery that leans hard into Belgian styles-Unibroue. They have an Apple Ephemere that is LOVELY. I've noticed that bottles produced fairly early in the year can tend to be more tart, Granny Smith like, and as fall settles in hard the flavour shifts to sweeter, almost apple pie notes.
A note on the caramel crown. It cuts the sweet some if you mix it with apple cider or no sugar added apple juice.
I'm actually delighted that I've watched enough HTD to see Greg drink something so bad he made a Donald Duck noise, that was amazing 🤣🤣
This was great. The only Christmas spirit I have ever looked forward to is Willibald Gingerbread Gin. It's not the greatest thing ever but it makes a solid spirit for the season and can go nicely in some nog even.
Was... was that a "Is it a good idea to microwave this?" Reference in the ginger snap notes? It probably isn't, but man, it made me remember that old old series, lol.
The food colours that are (based on the science that exist so far) linked to hyperactivity (espacially in kids) are the following:
E102 (tartrazine)
E104 (quinoline yellow)
E110 (sunset yellow FCF)
E122 (carmoisine)
E124 (ponceau 4R)
E129 (allura red)
I don’t know wich ones that are banned/regulated in the US tho since im european!
Hope that helps!
I’d love to see the sources on this because based on some of my own idle research there’s not any real proof food color is linked to hyperactivity. There was one study with a lot of flaws that linked it only to kids under 13 and only with… a food dye allergy I think it was? It’s been a while since I read about it.
California just restricted Red No. 3 in October, that's the big one
Red Dye 3 was banned from cosmetics in the USA in 1990 due to evidence it caused cancer and was just recently banned in food in CA for the same reason. The FDA has not done it's own ban in food, yet. I don't think it was linked to hyperactivity though so I'm not sure those are related.
Red 40 and Yellow 5 are potentially linked to hyperactivity I believe, though the evidence is less concrete at the moment.
The winterjack varies Heavily by year, some years its got a crazy strong cider profile, some its like a pine bough, others are like what you got
I sometimes use Angostura bitters in lieu of cinnamon or other spices when making apple pies. It works.
Winterjack: "Has some...fresh cut grass notes..."
Tasting board: "Sam?"
Nice S3 reference 😂
the winter jack is recommended warm. it's fine, nothing to write home about, needs more spice.
This was quite the treat
Ive never seen this man so active and hyper and honestly is ofputting in the best way possible
must be the yellow dye 😂
"Now appearing in the Poconos." As someone from the Poconos.... yeah not wrong 😂
Got the Viski stainless steel tankard and been drinking all my Xmas beers out of it. Really like it.
Anti-gift guides! Probably my second fave series after the Customer Is Always Wrong 😁
I have to agree, the salted Caramel Crown isn't great on its own, but I leaned into it and made some sickly sweet Nog and I love it.
I use crown salted caramel for dessert cocktails. It goes good with a coffee liqueur
Captain Morgan once sold here "gingerbread spiced rum" which was surprisingly decent.
My mom likes to mix the Smirnoff Peppermint Twist with Pepsie. Sounds odd, but she swears it's good! I'm turning 21 in a couple days, so I've been enjoying watching you and getting a feel for what might be worth trying.
Love the content Greg, the good the bad and the ugly keep it going El Duderino 👍🏽
"The goggles do nothing" was a call back I wasn't expecting in a HTD episode lmfao
The only holiday booze I get excited for is the Winter Jack. I love apple cider, and hoo boy do I like that Winter Jack.
