You should do a series on Cocktails that you don't like but could be improved
Youve made espresso martinis in the past. heres how i riffed off from one of your videos.
3 tbsp ground coffee in 2 cups of vodka overnight (these are the ratios that work in my french press)
1 oz of the coffee-infused vodka
1 oz of kalhui
0.5 oz of baileys irish.
twist of lemon on the rim and ango drops and coffee beans on the foam.
(phenomenal imho)
Love the podcast
Where can I buy a dozen "edds"?

I love how Meredith has slowly become the secondary taster of the drinks. She always adds a more relatable description after the professional one.
Who’s Meredith?

My friends and I invented a cocktail that we call a "Landmine," which is fig flavored Redbull, Ouzo or Rakija, and either a shaving of ginger or a splash of ginger ale. The name refers to the fact that it is high energy, tastes like something that came out of the ground, and contains a flammable substance found all over the Balkans.
Sorry for your hearts and livers 💀
Interesting you say "tastes like it came out of the ground" bc when I tried the fig red bull it was one of the earthiest things I've ever tasted. Like it tasted like when you open a bag of bread and can smell that there's mold growing on it before you can see the mold. Very very odd taste. Kinda sorta liked it tho
As a fellow balkan, I'm gonna need measurements
I would love to see an episode based on elevating less classy drinks.
I worked pretty hard at coming up with an elevated Long Island Iced Tea that has gone over very well with friends and family.
Don’t tease. What’s the receipt?
Let’s hear it man! If you’re willing to give up your secrets lmao
Elevated Long Island
1/2oz London Dry Gin
1/2oz Light Rum
1/2oz Reposado Tequila
1/2oz PF Dry Curaçao
1/2oz Ramazzotti
1/2oz lemon juice
1/2oz lime juice
1/2oz 2:1 simple
Top with club soda (about 1oz)
You could call it a Staten Island iced tea.
@@SmokeyChipOatley I don't think naming an elevated cocktail after the garbage island full of boxed wine and cheap beer drinking boomers really works, but it's certainly funny.
"What do we garnish that with?.....Molly, I suppose"
I'm fucking dying laughing.
I think there could be a whole episode on "What *can't* Angostura improve?"
Possibly also for Absinthe, but that's because I often use just a little, hard-to-tell bit of anise as a secret ingredient. :P
The first thing that comes to mind is whatever two ingredients mixed that one time that tasted like tootsie rolls.
Angostura can't improve Kaoliang...
@@stephsaguudefan1753Kahlua and orange juice 1:1, the Tootsie roll
Matcha is just exactly what you described - green tea (traditionally steamed, which is how japanese green teas are heat shocked to shut down the temperature sensitive enzymes that cause the oxidation, whereas Chinese greens are pan fired for a less grassy, vegetal green) and milled ultra, ultra fine.
Caffeine wise, green tea has very low bioavailability of the caffeine to be extracted in water, if I recall, it's because tea binds it's caffeine differently to coffee, but I did do a dichloromethane extraction in lab once on green tea and coffee and per gram, the tea was about 8% the level of coffee.
However, when you eat the whole leaf in matcha, you are able to extract nearly all of thr caffeine in the leaves, so a serving matcha has about as much caffeine as a similar serving of coffee.
But I've only done caffeine extractions in lab a few times. Dichloromethane is great at pulling out all he available caffeine (it's an industrial decaffeinator, steam also works) but it'd be fun to try matcha sometime.
Even more important than the processing of Japanese tea is the growing. Japanese tea tends to come from young plants grown under heavy shade whereas Chinese tea tends to come from older plants grown in rocky soil in the full sun. The young age of the plants and the lack of light lead to an enormous increase in L-theanine and other compounds that impart the intensely salty, soupy, umami-rich flavor often associated with Japanese tea (particularly sencha.)
@Paul Hammer oh yeah forgot that - but the supwr shaded and super young leaves part is only for matcha, really. Most sencha is of the same shade and age as Chinese green teas. Only matcha gets the youngest buds and is shaded for weeks prior.
I'd be interested in doing an isolation and sequencing of the genomes of the various teas because L-threonine is not really shade dependent (it's believed to be made in the roots) and is a major component of all tea flavors, it's actually highest in yellow tea, a Chinese varietal. The grassy notes most associates with sencha come from steaming as an enzyme deactivator, and the racemic threonine should be more present in pan fired teas.
But it's also just a lot of marketing. A lot of food science, particularly around specialty foods, is more speculation than hard lab science
The main flavor difference is in the heat method used to stop enzymatic oxidation.
I've tested this myself with young buds from a Japanese tea Camilla I have in my yard - I took a handful of young buds and steamed half and pan fired half. The difference was really obvious, with the steamed tea being Grassier and more vegetal and the pan fired being earthier.
Home made tea is really fun! This year i want to try making oolong and black.
Wait, seriously DCM is used industrially? I thought nowadays it was used almost exclusively CO2
@Mattia Carciola mostly steam or dcm as far as I know.
Dcm is entirely volatile so its harmless.
@@colinmartin9797 yeah but supercritical CO2 can be easily tuned in polarity, can't leave any residue so less tests needed, it's cheaper, inert and non flammable...
Maybe the issue is an apparatus for such large scale processing and older plants can't just switch as easily
The After Party on this one is going to be wild
Agreed 😂
I always did my jager bombs 45% Monster, 65% Jager with a twist of lemon. You really only need a bit of the energy drink, otherwise it just takes over.
An episode on "college" drinks would be great!
The jagerbomb is the only drink where I feel like the percentages adding up to 110% could perhaps be intentional 🤣
I didn't know I wanted it but hearing about THC infused drinks has me REALLY curious what they'd be like and would love to see an episode
seeing greg get progressively more stoned over the course of the episode would be hilarious
Is it like edibles where it'd hit harder than smoking
@@dobber43 depends a little, the nano-infused drinks seem to be more similar to smoking/vaping in effects. Drinks with fats in them could be infused more traditionally I believe.
an episode on that would be awesome... and Brad Leone as a feature for the Munchies
@@AveEndGermanyspeaking of Brad Leone. His editing really reminds me of the older Hunzi edited It’s Alives
Please tell me I'm not the only one who loves the parts with Meredith. She's so funny and energetic. Want to see a episode where they co host and make drinks for each other. Love you too Greg, you are a star
I agree. She's like the Angostura in the drink that is Craig! Much like the Chiapparoni, HTD is good both ways.
You're not alone, she's fantastic. Love their chemistry together when Greg goes off on a tangent 😂
They are a great team. As long as the episode isn't consent switching from on stage to off stage shots, which i find extremely annoying, I'm on board!
@@gnrfan713 on I enjoy when it switches to Meredith off stage, very fun
The matcha cocktail looks great! Can’t wait to try it. Pro tip: whisking the matcha well in a liquid first eliminates the graininess and activates all the good healthy bits. If it’s grainy it has not been mixed enough
Oh, this reminds me how I really want to see you do a Deep Rock Galactic episode with beer and beer-like cocktails based on those served at the Abyss bar within the game. There is a popular brew called a Glyphid Slammer which is some sort of Dwarven Four Loko with an energy drink (which may or may not be made from giant alien insects), beer, and a red crystalline stimulant narcotic sprinkled on top.
??? Drink from a show or game oooo or a movie
@@dakotagraziani4947 Game. Deep Rock Galactic is that silly game about space Dwarves mining an alien planet and getting sloshed.

Regarding the blend of matcha, sugar, and citrus, one of the best drinks I had at a cafe I used to work at was a matcha limeade. Such a perfect balance👌🏻👌🏻
That sounds fantastic! I might try to make that into a punch this summer. :)
@@MrChrisPietrzak my boss made the best carbonated limeade from an oleosaccarum and kept me caffeinated through the summer
Sounds like an Arnold Palmer tbh
@@gamemeister27 call it the green AP
@@gamemeister27 Largely yeah, but I like the changes: matcha for the tea, and lime for the citrus.
Though you did make me realize that a many traditional punches (including my own!) are in the realm of an alcoholic Arnold Palmer. Or that the Arnold Palmer is a modern, non-alcoholic punch. :P
Can't believe a Carajillo wasn't in this episode! Absolutely phenomenal coffee based cocktail! Just espresso and Liquor 43 over ice, adding an orange twist makes it perfect. (I've also made it with cold brew concentrate because we respect laziness lol)
Hey Greg, how about doing a spicy cocktails episode?
the craziest one I have ever had was six drops of a homemade carolina reaper pepper/everclear tincture in a double shot of fireball whiskey.
No Mercy lol
Jesus Christ, did you type that from beyond the grave??
The elevated jager bomb seems fun. If you actually do a separate episode with more Red Bull drinks and are taking viewer submissions, I'm gonna plug my own drink as I often do down here, and it's 2.5 oz Japanese Whisky and a few dashes of ginger bitters in a highball with ice, topped with Red bull and garnished with an orange peel. Call it a はい Bull. I'm sure you could improve on that idea.
Lol that sounds awful but why do you call it "yesbull"?
@@pumpkin1escobar instead of a classic Highball it's a "Hai, Bull". You know. Because of the Red Bull.
Oh that actually sounds pretty good
Morgan Drinks Coffee recently made a video making coffee cocktails where she replaced alcohol in classic cocktails with coffee. It's interesting that you made a caffeinated video too.
I really love doing a cold brew old fashioned. I just replace the whiskey with dark roast cold brew concentrate and it’s amazing (lighter roasts taste too sour with the orange oil).
The Earl Gray Marteani was my intro to your channel and my first "craft" cocktail I ever made! Still one of the best in my recipe book.
we've got a local drink that might be my favourite (Canadian).
1.5oz vodka
Espresso or cold brew
0.5oz baileys
0.5oz kahlua
served over ice and drank quickly through a straw
Is called a shaft and is A1. Pretty much "exclusive" to Victoria and Vancouver but I'm sure other places have put those ingredients together
Is delicious though
I love to make the Marteani with honey syrup instead of normal simple, feels like it adds to the tea in a great way
Matcha and cloudy sake are a nice match to work with
jasmine green tea infused vodka or gin, mint, a little cardemom, matcha, and cloudy sake at the end. Make an alchoholic version of a tea "cocktail" we would serve at a cafe i used to work at.
Cucumber and lime also make excellent friends with matcha.
Greg! We have a local brunch spot here in Louisville that does a KY Coffee with espresso, bourbon, sweetened vanilla cream and a twist of orange that you have just GOT to take a crack at. The orange, coffee and bourbon flavors pair together so well over ice.
I'm from Louisville and have not heard of this. What place has this?
COLD BREW CLARIFICATION: the ratio of coffee to water is generally always around 1:4
(also cold brew technically has the most caffeine for a standard coffee drink, but drinks like americanos and lattes that might have 4 shots of espresso often contain more caffeine. i think the thing is, people drink cold brew quickly because it's easy to kinda chug it, so it hits a bit harder+there's less milk to dilute it in the stomach)
Either way the studies I found say espresso has twice as much caffeine as cold brew per litter
@@dylanhoward718 well sure but you don't drink a liter of espresso, do you?
@@7letters4letters49 you don't drink a liter of cold brew either. Either we're talking about per oz
@@dylanhoward718 what did the studies you read use as the default sizes for espresso and cold brew? i'm curious about the caffeine / oz ratios you're referring to
@@7letters4letters49 if you take the average of all the hot brewed coffees you get approximately 27 milligrams of caffeine per fluid ounce. Even though that estimate is high (thanks to Death Wish and Black Insomnia), this means drip coffee has nearly one-third the caffeine content per fluid ounce when compared to espresso.
The average of all the cold brews comes to about 26 milligrams of caffeine per fluid ounce (30 milliliters). This puts it directly in line with hot brewed coffee. But yes obviously these are not consumed in ounces so if you drink 3 cups of drop coffee or cold brew you will have more caffeine than an espresso. However for the purposes of cocktail we're only using 1 or 2 ounces
From what I understand, caffeine comes off coffee grounds into water fairly easily. You get 99% of the caffeine with the first flush of water. What you get steeping the water in the grounds is taste and layers of flavor. More coffee beans and less water = more caffeine.
You can buy anhydrous caffeine powder online in bulk- caffeinate any drink! FDA states “Just one teaspoon of pure powdered caffeine can contain the same amount of caffeine as 28 cups of coffee”. Is that a warning or just the beginning of a new energy cocktail?!?!
loved Meredith’s eye roll during the sponsor ad! 🙄 ❤😂
I happened to unknowningly make a variant of the Earl Grey Martini last night. I made some Earl Grey simple syrup a while back and used that with dry gin and some lemon, was just randomly making a drink with what I had on hand and it was good.
"What would you garnish it with? I don't know. Maybe molly." - LMAO
This episode was amazing.
I'm definitely gonna check that podcast out!
Thank you!
Great vid. Always like it when Greg is having fun making drinks he enjoys
truly a lovely show to always come back to whenever I can't sleep, I adore your demeanor Greg
Loved this one! Amazing cocktail reactions from you both. Also Greg going increasingly beast mode towards the end of the episode 😳
I'd love to see a series of the same drink made multiple ways maybe increasingly fancy margaritas or old fashioneds made to bring out different notes in the whiskey
I can't wait to make both tea cocktails. Only thing I don't have on hand is the Cointreau(sp?). The rest I always have around. Absolutely love how you introduce me to new drinks I want to try.
nice cocktail tips
Love your content man.
I missed this video, but learnt to make an espresso martini at a festival recently. When i made one at home i added angustura choco bitters and wow it's my new favourite drink
Dude. Been watching a ton of your stuff and really enjoy it. Had to comment here. You made me spit coffee on my desk when you dropped the "moly" as a garnish idea on the Jager bomb. Cracked me up man
When I've done Earl Grey martinis in the past, I've used Japanese herbal gin, which makes for some really fun flavor combos. The Earl Grey I used was also heavy on rose hips
I'm picking up Tanq tonight and making the matcha cocktail. Sounds delicious!
As a lover of jagermeister you have no idea how excited I was when I finally tasted absinthe and it tasted exactly like what I wanted. Jagermeister tastes like Christmas to me. It reminds me of old fashion hard candies made of spices and anise and such. Absinthe from my perspective was like someone made something with less sugar and more alcohol just for me.
Something about the start of the third drink, with the noise Greg made, and wobble effect cracked me up, awesome video as always, you two!
I love Viski, I got the 24k gold jigger from Coronado Hotel, and man do I love it!
The Earl Grey Martini looked fab. I'll definately be having a go at that one myself.
Make it so, yes!!!!! Captain Picard introduced me to tea, and Earl Grey will always be my Number One.
Thanks for another entertaining video.
The Matcha cocktail is killer!
Love you Greg. You make me smile when I don't feel like smiling
I work a bar with a cocktail menu. Tried the lemon in the shaker. Game changer
Im from Philly... loved the reference to Goth Night at Shampoo!
16:00 love it
I dunno, I favor Lo-Carb Monster over Red Bull for my Jäger-Bombs, also I tend to pour the energy drink over a orange peel in the glass to infuse a more bright flavor without being overkill and that is the Simplest complex Jäger-Bomb that I still love into my 30’s as a treat. Edit: I Would LOVE to see a THC Infused cocktail episode, Thank you for including it in your script to mention as the way you put it made it Just that more wanting to be seen.
I would be really interested (based on your playing with the elevated jager bomb) to see what you could do with a different energy drink. My personal preference for energy drinks is actually NOS, because I find it to be one of the least cloyingly sweet energy drinks out there. Strong notes of orange, I feel like. Heck, my usual morning preparation for it is to take one of my blender bottle cups, fill it mostly with ice, add a couple dashes of Scrappy's orange bitters, and then add the can of NOS. The bitters really do a lovely job of rounding out the flavors of it, along with the dilution you get from the ice. So, I wonder what kind of "full" cocktail work you would be able to come up with for it.
Also, funnily enough, my current favorite coffee is from Chiapas, too! It's from one of the local roasters up here in the Seattle area, one called Tony's. It's a medium roast, and when I saw tasting notes of almond and chocolate on it, with a creamy mouth feel, I was sold.
Also, my chocolate bitters of choice are Scrappy's - as ones that are easy to get hold of here. I've tried some others, but they were too... floral. Really bothered me. Scrappy's has a lot of good cacao notes to it. Great even on a coca cola... but I may have to try them on ice cream... also will have to look into the Angoustora chocolate bitters...
On the topic of Earl Grey gin, this is one that I LOVED from the Map Room Tea Lounge in Boston
The Dickens:
2oz of earl grey gin
1oz of pineapple juice
1oz simple (I typically use Demerara)
Shake over ice and stain into a highball on the rocks
Top with soda water
Garnish with pineapple frond
Love me a Bruce Wayne when camping
2 ounces of Jameson Cold Brew
3 ounces of Stök slightly sweetened cold brew coffee
1/2 ounce of Maple Syrup
Shake with ice and pour
AMAZING!
Ango and the xocolatl Bittermans on vanilla ice cream is amazing woah Thanks Greg.
i really think it would be fun to try and replicate the flavor of redbull into a cocktail that doesn’t use redbull at all, i’ve been kind of obsessed with this idea ngl
Club shampoo!!!!!!! Blast from the past!!!! I loved going There!!!!! I used to drink red bull and double jager( spelling) mixed like a drink all the time. So much more expensive than I expected lol. Good times.
The Earl Grey Martini sounds up my alley! I have an earl grey syrup that I use with gin and orange bitters for a gin old fashioned but I'm going to try this one, too. I wonder if you could do a fast-infusion of the tea and gin with a cream whipper. Fun things to try!
I had the Earl Grey Martini at a Sri Lankan beach bar a few months ago. Local gin, island grown tea. Immaculate.
That espresso martini. I wonder. Replace that vodka with something that tastes good. Like a nice dark overproof rum. That could be fantastic
What do you garnish it with? Molly!!
amazing
I know saying “I don’t eat mammals” probably means you eat fish, but I am imagining Greg munching on some lizards and frogs spit roasted over a campfire
I eat fish and birds and wouldn’t flinch at reptiles. Alligator can be pretty decent, I hear iguana is great.
@@howtodrink I’ve lived in florida for the past two years, and every Friday on my way to work I pass a farmers market where I see a bunch of stands selling alligator jerky. I haven’t been rave enough to try it yet
@@howtodrink Alligator is delicious. I wish it was easier to find where I live.
@@schoeferproductions2394 I would recommend you try nuggets for your first time instead of jerky. Find a good local pub that fries them up fresh.
@@kareningram6093how would you say jerky compares to nuggets? I've only had jerky as a friend brought some back from vacation once to share, I'm up in Canada so it's not a protein I'm expecting to see again
The matcha one sounds amazing. Kind of missing the recap screen with the list of the ingredients used in the cocktail Greg just tasted. It was a nice screenshot for a recipe.
A little while ago I came upon my own sort of "Elevated" Jaeger Bomb that paralleled yours in a way, although it was pretty simple.
Same as your train of thought, I wanted to cut the sweetness of Jaeger, so I decided to just use Ouzo instead for a dry anise flavor. Since I had also recently gotten into Ouzo lemonades, I thought it could definitely use some citrus too;
2oz Ouzo
1 1/2oz lemon juice
3oz or so Red Bull, idk I kinda just pour to taste lol
Looking good, Greg! 💪
I can relate to Greg's Jager darkness, I had the same demons.
I loved the shout out to Nocturne at Shampoo!!
Hey Greg great content as always!!! Question do you think dry Curacao would work in the first lady? or should I buy the cuantro?
My favorite caffeinated cocktail is not a very sophisticated at but I love it none the less! The Irish Trashcan!
Ooooooo hell yeahhh- had a truly horrific gin-laced oat london fog this winter but willing to give earl grey drinks a second try!!
I don't trust any drink with oatmilk period. last time I had one, I got very sick because the dumbass who made it didn't refrigerate the oatmilk after opening.
Love the Philly shout-out, I was just reading about how insane shampoo was in the 90s.
Damn that match-basil pairing seems GREAT!
Speaking of the risks of dry shaking, to avoid this I have seen other cocktail creators and also tested myself with good success using a hand held milk frother in the shaker instead of dry shaking. Hope this is a good tip❤
I love to see you make caffeine simple syrup or something like that
Jager and coffee is still my fav spiked coffee
I'd want to try the Red Bull & Jaegermeister elevated with 1oz. white grapefruit juice & ½ oz. lemon juice for the citrus.
Greg I love the smell of Basil just as much. I really really do love it. I don’t know why, but it’s intoxicating, funny enough
I wonder if the chiapporni would be better with demerara sugar or syrup. I love that little hint of molasses in my coffee
Ooh an earl grey martini sounds fantastic. I'm a gin guy and an earl grey guy, seems right up my alley
I love your magicians standard of presentation 🎉
My favorite caffeine caffeinated cocktail is a gomebrew I came up with, I call it The Four Loko That Gets You High and it's definitely a one-and-done kinda thing
Hi Greg and Meretith,
I'm a huge fan of the show and am constantly trying out the drinks from it. I'm wondering if you could do a video for a Spanish Coffee. I'm from Portland, OR where it's been invented, but see that there are quite a few variations of it. I'm curious what variation is your favorite (I'm guessing it'll be Jeffrey Morgenthaler's rather than the original from Huber's).
Salud
I enjoy the jager ane red bull. The 2 flavors for me are just a perfect mix.
But now with all the flavored red bulls I'm partial to vodka and the coconut berry red bull
Matcha is the very top tea leaves of Japanese tea plants that were stressed by being shaded for a few months before harvesting, doing this triggers the tea plants to concentrate more their polyphenols (mostly catechins), plant vitamins, caffeine, chlorophyll, and l-theanine into the top leaves.
These SPECIFIC leaves are then processed largely like regular green tea and then powdered.
I like Jager and seeing the twist on Jager that you did gave me an idea. I don't know if it's already a thing but a jagerbomb martini, replace sweet vermouth with Jager and redbull. I feel like gin and Jager would go together well and the gin would take away some of the sweetness and balance it and the lemon you used in the altered jagerbomb would be good in a martini version
I made my own coffee liqueur by combining cold brew concentrate with vodka and sugar and I highly recommend Greg and everyone who drinks coffee and alcohol try.
The Chiapparoni has been in regular rotation here ever since I saw you originally make it. It's fantastic!
Matcha I find has a velvety texture, and that with eggwhite must have a really great texture!
The elevated jagerbomb has given me an idea… instead of going down the lemon route, i am a huge fan of orange mixed with chocolate and i get something of a chocolate vibe from jager. Might have to try a mix of jager and cointreu. Will report back with findings lol
A friend and I just made a bunch of the earl grey martinis , and added different bitters to it. Scrappy's Bitters, Lavender bitters and St. George, BOTANIVORE GIN really launched this drink to warp 9.5. please give it a try. Thank you for the idea and my new favorite cocktail!!!
I said it out loud as soon as you added the Fernet to the Jagerbomb - "He's gonna want Ango in that!".
I love the taste of energy drinks mixed with jagermeister. I don't like the caffeine, but I found that fruit punch Fanta tastes somewhat similar to red bull and also pairs well with jager.
I’ve done a version of the earl grey without the egg and by throwing the tea bag in the shaker with the liquid for like 10 minutes. Not quite as elegant but still good
Those tea cocktails look so good!
Wish the Jager would have turned out better though.
Hot dang this reminded me of a drink people used to have on a local Grafitti/Vandal hangout called "Veneno" (literally "Poison"): You take a 500ml cup, fill it with ice (or coconut water ice cubes) and then equal measures of cheap energy drink and bottom-shelf vodka. You can drink alone if you want to get dangerously fucked up, but ideally you sip and pass along your friends.
Here in Sweden there is a very famous coffee cocktail called "Kaffe Karlsson" with a completely unknown origin. It's equal parts Cointreau and Bailey's, topped with coffee and cream (like an irish)
Great episode. Jc what do you think of the idea of switching the vodka out for green chartreuse.
