Air Dryer can only hold so much moisture. When the Incandescent beads soak up all they can. That is when you have air dryer issues. Most people only think about this part. When it messes up, when that cartridge being changed out. Would save all the issues. On some of the cartridge's like yours. You can dry out the Incandescent beads. In an oven, and use them over and over.

I do not even give the owner the option to "rebuild" the dryer. I live in Michigan, and with the salt and neglect the dryer usually sees. I just replace the whole unit. It just saves time and labor like you said
Eventually the aluminum base casting will corrode and will no longer hold air. At that point you have to replace the whole thing. I've seen them corrode clear through the mounting holes.
Wes, did you kiss that check valve? That's why it re-seated. :) Most of these repairs are due to daily maintenance, or not doing it. The compressor is the most important part IMO, so that dirt floating around on the purge and/or unloader is gonna get to the compressor. Keep it clean.
I was working on a 2000 379 Pete with 12.7 Detroit and that Truck had those cloth wrapped hoses. You couldn’t hear a leak and it was very slow took me a while to find it I found it by accident while I was pressure washing the truck as soon as the soapy water hit that line about 2 feet of it just foamed up. You couldn’t hear the leak but you could definitely see it so I always made sure on any truck that had those lines especially going to the fan clutch Because it seems like every one of them was bad when I started checking. I would degrease them once a month with air pressure in the system and run the truck a little and look for any foaming air lines. Found quite a few leaks that way.
@4:50 ya got it backwards. the side mounted elbow is the inlet and the bottom is the outlet with the check valve. the check valve in the discharge prevents the wet tank from emptying when the dryer purges. the ad9's were made so you could service all but the dessicant without tearing the whole thing apart. lots of problems with the ad8's caused the design change.
Wow, great walk through! I have a 92 international bus that's purging every 30 seconds, it also seems to leak after I shut it off. First time I heard it, I thought there was a wounded animal nearby lol, it's a very faint squeak, kinda like the dying witch on wizard of oz 😁. Took it to a local diesel shop and they told me I needed a new air dryer, no filter on mine BTW. I'm just wondering now if they checked the valves....i didn't know the squeaky sound after shut down wasn't normal.

Thanks for the video btw, great info and basically exactly addresses the issue I'm having
I’m having the same issues , I replaced the air dryer assembly and the air governor but I’m having the same issues , I’m wondering if you ever find the problem ??
I use wrenches that size and bigger every day. Being a union pipefitter we see flange bolts up to and beyond 1 inch and more. Those bolt heads and nuts start getting pretty big.
good info. Im not well versed in truck air systems but im trying to learn as much as i can
Here in the rustbelt of Michigan we replace the whole dryer. Like you said it about a wash either way.
its all about time and reliability.
I would wonder where the metal shard came from? Nicely explained. Thanks for sharing...
Carbon build up. Compressed air makes a lot of heat. Combined with some oil blow by and many years of use makes carbon chunks.
Yes, the desiccant cartridge can be rehabbed. But, it's only about $20 for a reman.
@@WatchWesWork I agree, but have been caught. And had to dry one out a few times.
Loving this, I'm currently gathering parts to fit air trailer brakes to my pickup here in the UK.
Classic Cars and Parts for sale UK why do you want to add air brakes to a pickup?

Ole Cummins m11 in that truck same motor as my 96 kenworth k100e I’d recognize it anywhere had same issues with my system purging every 30 seconds too did all the same things you did didn’t fix it couple weeks later it started working properly 🤷♂️ working great ever since
We were able to download the entire Bendix manual- then print it - was really handy
Very useful video.....thanks for sharing and trust me......I know it took time but anyone watching this video thanks you also for the knowledge.....👍👍👍
I had the same problem a little while ago. The guy who changed the cartridge filter was a little careless and a small pebble got in that check valve.
Nice video amazing training , I have same problem in my truck 🚛
You should write a book with all troubleshooting experiences you learned.
Very helpful! Very informative and detailed! Thank you very much for making these videos. I'm now a subscriber!
More interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing Wes.
Awesome Video!🎥
Great video! Can’t wait to implement what I’ve learned from you!
My volvo 670 sounds like choking duck before and after blow off new dryer Andy ideas
Nice video tnx
I do not even give the owner the option to "rebuild" the dryer. I live in Michigan, and with the salt and neglect the dryer usually sees. I just replace the whole unit. It just saves time and labor like you said
Eventually the aluminum base casting will corrode and will no longer hold air. At that point you have to replace the whole thing. I've seen them corrode clear through the mounting holes.
congrats on getting your truck on the road. I'm trying to get to where you're at...on the road.
Good luck!
Wes, did you kiss that check valve? That's why it re-seated. :) Most of these repairs are due to daily maintenance, or not doing it. The compressor is the most important part IMO, so that dirt floating around on the purge and/or unloader is gonna get to the compressor. Keep it clean.
Awesome video thank you for all your help please keep them coming
Had the same problems, every 30 seconds. I changed my governor and air Dryer and been good since...
After you did this every how often it purge 🙏🙏🙏. Mine it did every minute???
And now you have a spare check valve. Thx for the info.
That was the coolest video I ever saw thank you so much I did not understand all the procedures. I must be an idiot.
You training system control air at big truck very well. Thank you so much.
I use an 1 5/8 all the time lol. But I’m a diesel tech. Great video man
hddm3 I do too use an 1&5/8”. The farm has a Flexicoil air seeder with 7/8” u-bolts on the shanks.
My wife started to fake snore when you said “i hope these truck videos aren’t to boring” thats one way to get her out of the room🤣🤣🤣
Thanks. I learned something new.
I worked for the railroad until I retired. The moisture spitters on most of the engines air tanks worked constantly. Would drive ya nuts.
I love trying to sleep near railroad tracks when they pull up and sit right next to the truck stop... rumble rumble pffft rumble pfft rumble pfft.
I haven’t even watched the video yet, and already know it’s a broken air dryer discharge check valve. The AD-9’s are famous for that.
Awesome job. Very informative
You're probably right. Sorry about that.
@@WatchWesWork its all good
Wow, great walk through!
Lol nice
Blairs farm and fleet, I wonder if he is family? Thanks for sharing, I dont work on trucks but watching you do the troubleshooting is great, thanks.
Blain's. There's also a Blain's Fleet Farm. Same family, competing store. Very common in Illinois and Wisconsin.
Well, the good news is that you now have a spare check valve so when/if that one ever goes bad, you have a replacement on hand already.
