The 1984 draft was historic draft… Akeem, Jordan and Barkley were 3 of the top 5 picks.
Imagine after year 7 in the league Jordan left Chicago and Barkley left Philly and joined Hakeem in Houston…
The 2003 draft was also a great draft.
Lebron, Bosh, Wade were three of the top five picks.
They did team up, after year 7…
The term Super Team was COINED after the Heatles… were formed.
Now young fans don’t understand that almost every NBA champion, had great talent. However, those teams were manufactured organically, either via trades or the draft.
Occasionally, a player would join a team during free agency, but they were just talented teams… especially in the old NBA (80’s) before expansion and there were multiple teams that didn’t win championships, but had multiple all-stars, and some even had multiple HOF players…I can name a few, but my point is this…
Not until LeBron took his talents to South Beach and “circumvented” the process was there any talk of “Super team”
Fan like to point to the Celtics as a Super Team without context. First and foremost, KG, was on the tail end of his career, Both Ray Allen and Paul Pierce started their careers in the 90’s were bearing a decade in the NBA, and the Celtics were terrible the season before.
Rondo, wasn’t “Rondo” yet, although KG was a fan and didn’t want him traded… and wanted to play with him…
If anything Kevin McHale, did his former teammate Danny Ainge a favor and gave KG an opportunity late in his career, which had been done many times before with aging Superstars ~ ala Charles Barkley.
No, other time in the history of the sport UNTIL Lebron did players collude behind the scenes and manipulate the process like Bron and D.Wade did along with Bosh… IN THEIR PRIME.
