  • Hey folks, thanks for tuning in as always!
In April 2023 we we're lucky enough to make our way to Japan and visit many of the smiths we work with at the shop. The first stop was Ryusen Hamono and we had a blast seeing behind the scenes before Koji Masutani, came out to chat and give us a short sharpening demo!

Pfffff, those Sobakiri's are stunning! I have to visit Echizen one day. Such a dream to walk around their workshops and showroom. Tanks for sharing.

Its a great time if you get the chance, the sobakiris we're really surprising. They came up and we actually hopped out of the shop before the sharpening demo just to pull them out for me to get a couple shots of them!

Great video - thank you! We will be taking a tour there in November. Do you have recommendations of other places to visit in Echizen (restaurant recs are welcome too!). Also do you have videos of other places you visited in Echizen? Thank you!

That's funny, I had the pleasure to visit in April 2023 too. Unfortunately it was on a Sunday and most of the shops were closed, but I was lucky enough to have a chat with Takamura Terukazu at the general store near the shops. Got a bunka from Ryusen for myself and a santoku from Takamura for as a present for a pro chef in the family.
Overall it was a wonderful experience, and the people there are absolutely lovely. If you're luckier than me and can go on a weekday I would definitely recommend booking a shop visit.

If we can get our hands on some! Though we've had some of his damascus stuff through the shop and we really like them, crazy thin and high performing but definitely on the delicate side of things!

My very first Japanese knife I bought was a Ryusen Hamono Blazen nakiri that I purchased from your shop. So this brand will always hold that sentimental value for me, and it was cool watching this shop tour.
