I entered my 1st BJJ competition after 6months training and lost every match. After watching a Danaher video about getting good at frames and escapes (also what is talked about here), I focused on that for the next 4 months. It was HARD I tapped a lot at the beginning, but at the end of the 4 months I tapped WAY less. At open mats I had people ask me if even blue and purple belts can get past my frames and defense. I know they were being hyperbolic, but I knew I'd improved. At my next Grappling Industries comp, last December, I won double gold (GI and no GI) in my weight/age division. So from personal experience, I definitely advocate this method of approaching things, as a white belt.

As Giancarlo student, he’s not kidding. He makes us start in mount, then turtle every single single night. My mount escapes have gotten SO much better from previous years of training.

That's one of the best BJJ videos I've seen in a while.
Amusingly, the last 1 minute or so also basically explains how many styles use submissions in standing position, including "low-percentage ones like wristlocks": you want him to pull out, because it usually opens him for a strike or takedown.

I find that some people who don’t regularly work escapes will say that they don’t work. I’ve got one black belt instructor that refuses to teach the hook and role because he says it doesn’t work. It works all the time for me because I know when to do it, and you get that understanding from doing it over and over again.

Positional escapes work, submission escapes on the other hand....

    Amazing video.
I’m exactly one of those black belt lifers who, since late purple, got too used to never being in bad position such that now I frequently panic when pinned. Especially now at a new club with much higher level it sucks, but I persist!

Great video. I’m def guilty of staying in defensive cycles for too long at times. You did a nice job outlining why you just can’t afford to do that.

Training to escape or reverse is a lot better for confidence but also will translate better for MMA. Too much time in jiu jitsu is spent handfighting and not engaging.
