Larry Junstrom was the original Bassist of Lynyrd Skynyrd. He left before their debut album was released. He later became .38 Special bassist. Sadly he passed away a couple of years ago
I always said 38 Special were the "roadies, rejects, and relatives" of Skynyrd. Larry filled the "reject" part. Having said that--I liked ol' Larry!
Speaking of the Beatles; Stu Sutcliffe was the original bassist during the Hamburg days. He left the band to pursue a career as an artist. He sadly died at the very young age of 21 from a brain hemorrhage.

John, to your question at the end...Uli Jon Roth. He left to pursue his muse as the Scorpions were getting bigger. They captured his era in the now legendary Tokyo Tapes. Then with Michael Schenker, the 1st guitarist in the Scorpions helping on some tracks for their breakout album Lovedrive with Mattias Jabs, who, along with a somewhat different sound, transitioned them to headliner status through the 1980's. Us fans could wonder but really we're blessed Uli left. As we were left with three different acts instead of one. Scorpions. MSG and Uli's Electric Sun. UFO is in there too. 3 great guitarists in the Scorpion's history.

1) Al Kooper. He formed Blood, Sweat and Tears and they fired him. Then they got huge.
Actually it's one thing if you quit and another if you get fired before a band gets big. I would rather be fired from a band rather than quit. Less guilt because there was nothing I could have done about it.
Al Kooper played organ on "Like A Rolling Stone", by Bob Dylan. He also played on LP's by Stephen Stills, Mike Bloomfield, et. al., and went on to produce Lynyrd Skynrd's first 3 LP's.
What if you get fired because you're "too good" and the band wanted someone who could play more "simple, pop-oriented" songs? That's why Aynsley Dunbar got fired from Journey. He's long been considered the greatest drummer never to stay in one band. But, hey--he played on "Wheel In The Sky".
John Curulewski left Styx after they recorded their fifth album, Equinox, in 1975. The band replaced him with Tommy Shaw, who toured that record, even though he didn’t play on it. Two years later, with the release of their seventh LP The Grand Illusion, Styx became one of the bigger American rock and roll bands.
I guess Tommy Shaw made the band "sexier"? As far as back as 5th grade, that was all the girls in my class would talk about was Tommy Shaw---he was right up there with Rick Springfield and Steve Perry. Looking at him now, he just looks like David Spade with long hair🤣🤣🤣

A local high school band near me was into the spandex glitter of the 80's. They were basically the house band at a local club named Savvys. They changed from glitter to metal, swapping a couple members along the way. In the early 90's I kept thinking this bartender in a men's club looked familiar but couldn't place him. Finally I asked him and he said he was indeed in a band at one time but thought they were going nowhere and quit so he went to bartending school that was running ads on late nite TV. That group had just returned from the Monsters of Moscow gig in front of a million people. They were Pantera.
I find it interesting that John Rutsey never said a word publicly about his time in Rush. All we have is anecdotes from the boys and the crew.
In Rush's 1st autobio "Visions", he is quoted on his experience w/ the band up until he left. There's also a snippet of him from a radio interview in "Beyond the Lighted Stage".
Singer/guitarist Richard Palmer-James left Supertramp after the 1st album in 1970 (1st success for the band with LP "Crime of the Century" in 1974), then writes lyrics for King Crimson (John Wetton era). John Lombardo left 10,000 Maniacs, after the first two LP in 1986, just before the band began to find success with the 3rd album "In My Tribe" (1987).
The 1 that popped in my head about others who left b4 their band hit the big time was Eric Stefani, big bro to Gwen. He worked on "Tragic Kingdom", but left before the album was released. BIG MISTAKE!

Bob Welch left Fleetwood Mac right before they hit it big with Lyndsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Welch hit it big solo 2 years later with the album French Kiss and the song Sentimental Lady which was a remake of a Fleetwood Mac song when he was in the band. Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks both helped on Bob's debut solo album.
If you asked me, Peter Green was MUCH bigger loss to Fleetwood Mac before him!
You could do a whole other episode on members of Fleetwood Mac who left prior to Buckingham & Nicks. I mean, Fleetwood Mac was already a band of note, but not mega-huge like they would become.
You are so right. They were a hardcore, deeply rooted blues band as far back as 1967 with prolific guitarists like Peter Green, Danny Kirwan, and Jeremy Spencer (who all left due to drug induced psychotic episodes of varying degrees...another story unto itself) before going pop with Bob Welch, and hit the lottery with Buckingham-Nicks.

These are the musicians I feel sorry for. In some cases, however, it was their own choice because they thought the band was going nowhere at the time. Hindsight is 20/20. Guys like George Tickner, the rhythm guitarist for Journey (yes, there was a time when Journey had TWO guitarists) who after their first album, made the faulty decision that a career in medicine was going to be more financially lucrative than playing in Journey and went to medical school. It's nice to know, however, that some of these guys redeem themselves later when they are inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame with everyone else who ever played in the band---and I believe George did get a trophy, however small his role was in getting Journey to Cleveland--much like a football player who spends his entire time with a football on the bench, but still gets a Super Bowl ring when his team wins the Super Bowl
no no no, nobody ever was replaced by Geddy Lee, him and Alex were best friends from middle school and they were the co-fonders of the band
Guitarist Dominic Scott left Keane in 2001, thinking the band was going nowhere. Just 3 years later, as a guitar-less trio, their debut album went to No.1 - & all subsequent albums. He was never replaced & the keyboard provided their trademark sound.
Paul Newton from Uriah Heep. He played on the first three albums before being replaced briefly by Mark Clarke and subsequently Gary Thain. His bass playing on the epic track Salisbury is some of the most clever and innovative styles I have ever heard. The band hit it big with Demons and Wizards but they never had a better bass player than Paul, in my opinion.
Gwen Stefani's brother, Eric left No Doubt right before they made it big with "Tragic Kingdom". He left to become a cartoonist on The Simpsons.

The late Derek Hoskins played guitar for The Gin Blossoms. He wrote the songs.
Drinking by DH was a huge problem. His band members fired him.
I saw his replacement and the band in metro Los Angeles. This was 1 week or so before they went on David Letterman! 📺

Just one real important one you kind of omitted John;
Cool video though but you forgot about John Curulewski those classic early sticks albums on the wooden nickel label but they were still more regional Midwest for the most part.
Then they hooked up with A&M went out to California John left the band just after equinox as they were really about to blow up with Crystal Ball.
Nick Crandle(bassist) left BFMV previously Jeff Killed John just before the band got sign to Sony Music Entertainment and the rest is history.
Without these changes, most of these bands don't reach the heights they accomplished, Rush and Floyd thrived with their additions (replacements)!

I love Bob Welch and if he didn't leave Fleetwood Mac we wouldn't have had those great albums and songs like Ebony Eyes and Sentimental Lady
Other drummers who were replaced shortly after a group's recording career began: Original Procol Harum drummer Bobby Harrison, who played on "Lime street Blues", and the stereo mix of "Homburg". After a rejected attempt to record the debut album with Harrison & guitarist Ray Royer, both were fired. Harrison & Royer formed a band called "Freedom",then Harrison became lead singer of a group named "Snafu". Harrison died in December 2021 at age 84.
Original Urish Heep drummer Alex Napier played on 6 of the 8 tracks from the UK song line-up of the group's debut album "Very Umble, Very 'Eavy". Keyboardist Ken Hensley later remarked "He was a jolly good bloke, but he had problems that wouldn't be apparent on a gig". Napier's drumming on the released tracks sound fine, but it is apparent that some editing was required to assemble satisfactory drum tracks. Musically, he was never heard drom ever again. For the remaining two tracks on the album, he was replaced by Nigel Olson, who, of course, soon exited to work with Elton John.
The one that saddened me the most was Aynsley Dunbar being fired from Journey because he was "too good"! Oh, I'm sorry that you want a drummer who plays more simplistic beats and want to shed your "jam band" image! You can tell, I never liked Steve Smith. Aynsley was much better, and his resume proves it. Oh well--their loss. Whitesnake's gain!
A guy performing still as Duke Tumato was an original member of REO Speedwagon but left before fame because he was more interested in Blues.

I'm confused, according to Tom Schulz he played all the instruments on the first album and the other musicians were just hired to play the live shows.

Bon Scott died in the back of a car after drinking himself to death. Vomit lodged in his throat. He had the ultimate exit.
I’ve always wished Roy Wood would’ve stayed with ELO a bit longer, likewise Eno with Roxy Music.
Unfortunately back in the day you had to be really good at ur instrument.. if you look back through history of bands usually the first member to quit or fired it’s usually the drummer and it’s always before their first major label recording. Either they were fired because they were that bad or the producer hired a session drummer to play on the recording because they can’t play in time and the drummer quit. Most drummers never know how bad their timing is until they record their first album in a real studio. For any beginner players out there no matter what instrument you play practice to a metronome it’s much easier to have good timing when you start playing rather then try to get rid of bad habits later on, trust me! When you play to a metronome it actually make ur technique much better you won’t be a sloppy player. When you don’t play in time you absolutely will develop bad techniques this happened to me on guitar! I tried for months to get my sweep picking down cleanly but I just couldn’t do it and I didn’t think a metronome would help me but after just a week playing to a metronome I noticed big improvements I actually was forced to change up my technique to play properly and after just a month I could sweep at decent speeds so that one month did more for me than the 6 months without playing to a click. As far as drummers go if your trying to be a professional musician if you can’t play in time extremely well there’s about a 99.9% chance you will never make it and if ur band does make it you will be replaced you at the bands metronome you just have to play perfectly. Even if you go watch the best local bands in ur town they will have the best local drummers available they are the heart and soul of a band if you don’t have a great drummer you won’t have a great band. There are so many musicians that have crazy stories about being kicked out but the truth is they just weren’t good enough it’s just that simple

There's a rumor floating around for years about some guitar player named Jimmy Hendrix who was set to rehearse and possibly join Emerson Lake, & Palmer, but OD'd on heroin and vomit before ever even having the chance to catch his big break with the progressive rock trio who would soon become world famous superstars of the genre with a string of 5 platinum albums and record breaking, history making tours. Who knows what might have been.

Pete Willis is a sad case. He actually started the band and hired the guys who ended up sacking him. I know guys from the Sheffield scene and he has rarely been seen in the music scene since the early 90's
Yeah..I believe Robert "Mutt" Lange, the superstar producer of "Pyromania" and "Hysteria", canned guitarist Willis due to excessive drinking and replaced him with Phil Collen.

........an interesting note, I think: he was replace in that band even earlier than his departure -- he was the original lead singer.
He wasn't the only one. Aynsley Dunbar, George Tickner, and Robert Fleischmann were all out of Journey even sooner. However, its nice to know that they were all mentioned when Journey was inducted into the RRHOF, and I like that they got to share in the celebration
Yeah, good call...he co-founded both Santana and Journey..was on Journeys first 3 or 4 LP's from 1975 to 1979. Jonathan Cain left The Baby's and hit the bigtime with Journey in 1980. I'm not sure if Rollie liked sharing vocal duties with Steve Perry.

RONNIE HAWKINS DIED RECENTLY...ronnie was fired after he started a band that is hall of fame inductee and did what was worlds biggest tour.
Ringo Starr as a Drummer was Limited in all fairness Pete to was Limited as well. Drummers in the Beatles were not a mainstay it was always about John Paul and George, it was their time as Beatles that got them any credibility.

The guitarist John JC Curulewski was replaced by Tommy Shaw after album Equinox.
He either left for his own reasons or fired. Tommy sure helped launched the group into the band we know today
