    Long or short,
    Forked or square;
    A beard enhances
    A chin that's bare
    Be yourself,
    Renounce all fashion;
    Hide the scissors -
    And follow your passion.

    My beard just started forking after a year of growing. It happens mostly when I walk around campus and the wind tosses it around. I don't like it at all!

    Beards are the ultimate accessories for guys! My wife changes how she does her hair almost daily. One cut, dozens of variations. Why let the girls have all the fun? One beards, dozens of variations. Have fun with your beards guys! Pointed handlebar today, French fork tomorrow, on the weekend, let's go for the Viking!

    I naturally have a fork, and was always self conscious about it..
    It doesn't help that for some reason I get a LOT of split beard hairs in the center of my beard, which fall out and leave it looking relatively thin and short compared to the forks.
    I keep it short generally, 12mm or less, to make it less obvious, but now I think I'm going to grow it out!

      It totally can be if you kept a short beard early on and trimmed the under lip and chin hairs. Mine grow at one third the rate of my neck and cheek hairs. 3 years later and I'm dealing with a fork that's twice as long as my chin and under lip hairs which are about 6 inches. I should do a massive trim but its daunting when you've come so far.

    I think the genetic theory for the French fork might apply to some men, but there's another explanation I found when I grew my yeard (for 15 months). My beard texture is just like Jack's: wiry and kinky. Once it grew long enough to touch my chest, it started to fork. I thought that made no sense, because the wiry texture should lock the hairs together and keep it from splitting. So I started paying close attention to when and how it fell back into a fork after I combed them back together.
    What I learned was that the hairs would catch on the fabric of my shirt, sort of like Velcro except they didn't actually get stuck there, there was just a tiny bit of friction when they were pulled out. Only a few hairs would do this when I was facing forward because most of my beard protrudes beyond my chest, but whenever I turned my head to the side, I would press one side of my beard against the shirt fabric, causing many more hairs to come into contact. Then when I returned to facing forward the hairs that were caught on that side would be dragged behind, pulling them away from the hairs on the other side. Naturally, the same thing happened on the other side when I turned my head in the other direction. So over time the two sides of my beard were being pulled apart by my shirt.
    I verified this experimentally by combing out the forks, then just turning my head back and forth. After about 15 cycles, the splitting was clearly reappearing.
    At the time I wore a lot of knit shirts, a looped fabric that hairs will easily get caught in. Cotton T-shirts are slightly better, but the forks still happen. But when I wore a plain woven cotton shirt, the forking almost completely disappeared.

    The option I've used, and seems to work mostly, is twisting the beard with some balm, and then lightly "backcombing" with my fingers. Hard to explain without visuals, but hope it helps!

    I have that problem and it's annoying as hell. I don't have a cleft chin. What I do have is an inch wide or so patch that is simply growing at roughly a third of the speed of the rest. Beard balm becomes your best friend. Not having a daily routine can cause the fork to be more pronounced.

  • @adevoidvessel
    @adevoidvessel 6 лет назад

    My beard is also a bit forked, but not so much. It's funny that people usually think that beards come perfectly, but rarely is like that.
    My dad has an amazing beard, he has a nice stubble with only a day or two without shaving, but he didn't get that look before his mid 30's. Today his beard doesn't fork like mine, but he says that his beard did that when he was younger.

    Hey Jack I’ve been binge watching your Yeard project and it’s inspired me to grow out my beard. I’ve always had a goatee or scruffy goat and now though watching your series I know about beard oil/ balm and so much more I never knew existed for beards. One thing I’ve noticed since having a beard is that even with washing it I get ingrown hairs. Do you have any tips about dealing with them or things I could do not to get them at all?

    I have a bald spot just below my bottom lip, and goes to the bottom of my chin. I've tried different products, grooming and brushing techniques, and it just looks like i have two separate beards. It's more than a fork. It's more like a wishbone, and i don't know what to do at this point. I haven't shaved it in about 19 months, so its got some decent length, but man, the slightest bit of wind separates anything i did, and sends the two halves flying in different directions. help!

I have a question which I have asked on several cites with no answer or suggestions. My beard is snow white. Often, especially after swimming, I see a yellowish tint in my beard. The only products which I have located for this are products for head hair. My understanding is that these are too harsh for one's beard. Do you or Eric have any suggestions?
