I feel like it means something when you watch a video about a game you never have played and never wanted to play and then the second you hear about the amazing dialogue in the first entry in the series and how it gives you a verbally abusive neighbor you can fuck with, you immediately want to play.

The first Mario Party (on the N64) was also darker. Set aside the balance-issues and the control-stick games, that game straight-up rubs your face in your losses.
If you lost a minigame, they play that harsh music-sting, the character's animations was less "Aww shucks" and more "end my suffering", right down to the sad voice-clips. Some of the minigames make you give your coins to your opponents; sometimes it was a big chunk! You place last in a game, your character fucking suffers.

Meanwhile I just got i to RPG's from Pokemon, then branched to Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Digimon World Dusk, and Dragonquest. But granted, I wanted to also play Drgaonquest Monsters which is literally Dragonquest but you're a Pokemon Trainer or Digimon Tamer, and I had a history with Pokemon and Digimon and knew Dragonquest had the same art and a lot of oberlapping concepts as Dragonball because of Akira Toriyama so I never truly left my comfort zone.
