Animal Crossing was actually conceived when the creator moved to a new town and was lonely which is kind of adorable. Also Jaiden is only half right. The first Animal Crossing was for the Nintendo 64 but was updated for the GameCube which was the first version people got internationally.

Animal Crossing is a great series but absolutely not for everyone.
It's a game intended to be played for maybe 30-40 minutes a day once you've gotten a bit into it. It operates off a real-time cycle based on whatever your consoles internal clock is set to. So if it's 3:40 PM for you IRL then it's the same in game, and time progresses at exactly the same speed. Days, Months, Seasons, and Years all pass in Animal Crossing just like they would in real life, and you're incentivized to play at all times in every game for different experiences. Shops are only open from certain hours, Villagers are only awake until certain times, certain NPCs only visit once every couple weeks, events happen on certain days a year, you can participate in real world holiday events in game, and certain encounters can only be triggered at very specific times. For example if you want some new music for your radio, you can only get it on Saturday evenings at your local Train Station/Coffee Shop/Club/Town Plaza depending on the game.
It's a slow burn because of that though. Once you've decorated your house how you like, all there really is to do is slowly chip away at your house debt and collect the various fish, bugs, fossils, and artwork for the Museum. Unfortunately bugs and fish come and go with the months so once you've got them all then you just need to wait until you can get more. Fossils and Art are completely random so you may get them all fast or spend years missing a single painting from your collection.
Animal Crossing is a very good game to chill with, but I think for most people who really adore it, it's because of the same reason as Jaiden. There's just a very nostalgic connection between them and the older games and I can 100% relate. I can remember playing the original game as a kid and being so attached to my villagers like they were some of my actual friends. Wild World would come with me on school trips and my friends would play together on the bus and have a blast even when we weren't together. City Folk on the Wii was a game my Dad loved and I have a ton of memories of building our town together. New Leaf was a game I was able to connect with people over after I finished High School and helped me make friends more easily. And of course New Horizons, while it's probably my least favorite game in the main series, has still helped me navigate through the pandemic these last couple years while keeping my mental health in check with something lighthearted and relaxing to distract myself. The games aren't anything mind-blowing but the effects the series has had on my life and the memories and connections I've made because of it will always ensure it's one of my favorite franchises.

@@theduckgoesmoo animal crossing is an acquired taste. It’s like Sims, but it literally boots you out the game and tells you to wait in real life time for certain things to be built. This can either make or break your experience. In the new game, you open it up, get about an hour into the game and then it tells you come back tomorrow and a shabby tent will be set where you can live.

Odd1sOut is definently someone you should check out. His animated Subway (Sooubway) videos are his most popular video.
Another animated storytime channel I've been meaning to suggest is LetMeExplainStudios. Rebecca is an classic animation loving theatre performer. One of her most popular video is My School Dress Code (35m views) and one of my favourite is My Crazy Theatre Teacher (21m views). Yeah that video is alot of emotions.

I've only ever really played Animal Crossing: New Leaf on the 3DS...and for the most part, no, there really isn't an "ending". For New Leaf, the plot is that you basically move to a new town and due to some miscommunication, you become the mayor and take over running and developing your growing community further. The time for Animal Crossing is based in real time, so whatever time/date is on your system, that is what it is in your game. It is a game with something to do year-round with special in-game events that happen on certain holidays, the seasons in the game change according to the seasons based on the time/date synced up with your system. You can catch a wide array of fish and bugs where some only come out during certain seasons or times of day.
Unless you cheat the system and mess with your the time/date of your system, Animal Crossing is the type of game that can quite literally take about a year's time minimum to 100% and even then...that's if you are lucky and are pretty much playing a little every day. I had one save file that I played for a couple of years and still never 100% the game and that was back when I use to play pretty regularly. As far as I know, there really isn't a true end game, only goals for completion that you give yourself. Like catching/donating all the fish and bugs in the game, collecting all the art to donate to the museum, fully expand and upgrade your personal house to get max ratings on it, and so on and so forth. The ending of the game is pretty much whenever you've decided you have done enough in the game to warrant ending your playthrough of it.
Fun Fact, my mom is like the furthest thing from a gamer outside of playing a few little simple mobile puzzle games and Animal Crossing New Leaf was a game that she actually got into playing for a little while. I actually had to show her how to use my 3DS and teach her how to play and ended up having to share my 3DS with her some days because she found it entertaining for a while.
