I'm Jamaican, & it's amazing to me how much this recipe is like *our* chicken soup, which is basically a sancocho! (Or our beef soup.) I first had sancocho in Bogota, Colombia, & theirs is a little different than the PR one, but not much. The Caribbean cooking thing is so related, from Jamaica to PR to the Dom Rep. Love it.
Mari, I’ve been watching all your cooking videos on my tv with hubby so I can’t comment but we were like “Esta sabe cocinar boricua style” 🤭🤭…He woke up this morning talking about, “what did Mari cook today? 🤣🤣. I was able to get away from work, life and watch this video on my phone which I can comment now lol. But YUMMMM!!! This is to die for 😊…I want some now 😢…Keep up the awesomeness 🙏🏼❤️
im puerto rican from my mom but she never taught me how to cook or even taught me how to speak spanish so now as an adult i have to try to learn everything by myself😭
You are seen, you are heard. I’m on the same boat. Your ancestry is your birthright, learn at your own pace and time. And also Spanish is the language of our colonizers as well. Don’t shame yourself for not learning as a child. But as an adult it’s up to you.
This was one of the best sancocho recipes I’ve tried in a loooong time. Slight modifications made: - I seasoned the meat the morning of. - Used flat short ribs. - Made plantain balls instead of cutting it up. That was my least favorite part but I appreciated the texture it added to the stew. - Used annatto oil when cooking the ham. - omitted sazon and carrots. Thank you for sharing the recipe. 2 hours was worth the wait. Tip: searing/roasting meat your meat/bones for soups or stews make a huge difference.
I was watching Power Book II Ghost and they were eating this dish. I looked it up and was like ...Oh my..i need to make this dish this coming winter. My hubby will love it. He loves beef and rice. Id make my cornbread to add it. I cant wait!
@@missym3325 Hi! I’ve never thought about pairing sancocho with corn bread but that combination sounds so freaking good lol! Once Fall comes, I’ll definitely make some cornbread on the side, so thank you!
I’ve never really had Puerto Rican food and what I have had I didn’t really care for, but your dishes are Beautiful and I’m going to open my palate and mind to PR cuisine. I’m going to try and cook this Sancocho this weekend! TY.
Very easy to follow along and not a terribly long video. I'll use this as a guide when I try to cook sancocho for the first time this evening. I'm curious what my wife, who is Dominican, will think of our Puerto Rican version. Very similar but I do notice some key differences like their use of celery and a lot more mashed platanos to thicken it. Anyhow, I have a bias being Puerto Rican but I think ours is better, taste and presentation.Thank you!
@@Dani-mw5gk I wish I could attach pictures. This guide helped tremendously. It came out as if I've been cooking this for a long time. It's now part of the house's menu for sure lol.
I just know you popped that last piece of ham in your mouth😂really like how you made your recipe. This is my first time making it and I’ve watched a few different recipes on how to make it, and yours has been my favorite so far so I think I’m gonna follow yours. Will let you know how it came out. Oh my goodness!!! I’m definitely going to try this!!! Thank you so much for sharing this yummy delicious recipe! I do have a question, unfortunately, I don’t have access to some of the root veggies, is it ok to use the ones I can get, like potatoes, carrots, corn, green bananas or does that change the PR recipe? ❤😊
I’m glad you enjoyed watching the recipe! 🥰 And of course! I honestly think the options you have are perfect for a great Sancocho! Make sure you add some squash or pumpkin in there too and you’re good to go! 🙏🏽
I just started to get into using an instant pot and I think if I make the meats in a broth in the IP, the beef will tenderize quicker. Then I would add the rest and cook it on the sauté setting.
I liked this video a lot , the only thing I would do differently is hold the potatoes and the pumpkin for last because they cook so fast and the others don’t.
@@mariscookingpr I'm vegetarian all my life mom and dad are from PR. When I was little my mom would make it vegetarian some how I don't remember how she made it it' was long ago. she passed away years ago. when I saw you'r video it brought back memories. Thank you you'r awesome.
@@madelinevegas8123 Awe 🥺 I would love to know how she made it as well! I love vegetarian meals. Hmmmmm…see if you could find a really good vegetarian filling online. A veggie filling that is good for things such as empanadas. I’m sure you can use it to make this recipe! You could also exclude the egg yolk if you want to as well. 🙏🏽
I think bone-in chicken thighs would work beautifully for this recipe; lots of flavor! You can even throw in some chunky pieces of chicken breasts for variety. Hope this helps! 🙏🏽
So, that’s actually the “sinew” - connective tissue that is attached to the beef. It’s stringy, silver and almost hair-like. As unsightly as it is, it’s normal! For further reassurance, everyone in my home has black hair 😂

My mom’s mom is from San Juan PR. She made her SanCocho with the bone of the turkey and added corn a in the cob as well. So good! Lord I miss it!
Great recipe thank you
Delish, thank you. My mom used to make this with beef and pork bones. I will try your method, my mouth watered each time you stirred the pot, lol
Was it with pig feet bones? I remember my friend’s mom would add that to every kind of stew! Very country and nostalgic 🥹 Enjoy!

Can oxtail’s be used?
Yes!
Can I make it in a crockpot ?
I’m sure! I suggest searing the meat before adding it to the pot for max flavor. Let me know how it turns out!

hi is sancocho still sanchocho if you use pork instead of beef?
That’s a good question! Personally, I don’t see anything “wrong” with replacing the beef with pork. ☺️

the fact that u didn't mix with ur hands is crazy to me lol

Exactly. Already, I don't want it because the seasonings are not mixed well.
Listen there was a airó your beef, I replayed this video and the hair is where u added adobo and start mixing!
