You forgot one more advantage: You can do different pieces with the same fabric/pattern. Nothing more hilarious than my daughter's swimsuit and my speedos sewn with the same silly summer cats pattern :-D
I prefer to run my elastics through a narrow tunnel rather than direct application-after many months of wear, the worn elastic can be tightened or replaced without impossible picking out elastic-unorthodox but I want my suits to last longer than even Dritz swimwear elastic!

Can you use dress weights to sew into a tankini top to keep it down when swimming?
