    A video for swimsuits would be great! I’m interested in how you use the power mesh vs lining, do you cut the power mesh and/or lining the same size as the pattern or slightly smaller. I know in general swimsuits have negative ease. Also can you use a coverstitch machine for top stitching elastic in place? I made my first swimsuits last year and would love any tips to improve. Seeing how you make a bra for your swimsuit would be helpful also. Fabric Fairy has a great fabric selection. Thanks.

    Beverly Johnson at Bramaker's Supply in Canada has a great book on sewing swimsuits. She talks a lot about how to build in support and coverage. She also has swimsuit patterns. If you are ever in Hamilton ON in Canada, her store is worth a visit. She also carries swimsuit fabrics and notions. The shop is on Ottawa Street, which is their "garment district" filled with fabric stores.
    For swimsuit patterns also look at Kwik Sew and old Stretch & Sew if you can find them. Both companies were the first to specialize in knits and their patterns and instructions are very good. I like tankinis, a 2 piece with more coverage. Kwik Sew and Jalie have fantastic patterns for those.

      @TomKatStitchery  5 лет назад +1

      It a long sleeve shirt that you wear over your swimsuit. It’s called a rash guard because surfers wear them to prevent rashes when they’re sliding up and down on their boards, but most people use them for sun protection now.

    Thank you for covering this subject! I got the germ of an idea this week that I'd sew a rashie this summer and had started to do some research. It was getting confusing but thankfully I found your video that explained fabric, FOE etc. In Australia the rashie is everywhere, I will live in a boring old racer back Speedo (trunk legs!) but have a specific rashie for the beach or for the pool or for the water park. I want to sew my own now so I can get one long enough, but I've also got the idea I can make a wrap shirt pattern up in the swimwear material for "formal rashie occasions". I love the idea of a thoughtfully color blocked rashie too. And now that I've figured out that my children's rashies are just tees made with elastane I can make theirs too. Your videos are great.

    I have made the rashguards and the legging and know they are very cool so very comfortable even when dry. I think you would love it cause they are cool and I use a regular bra under mine and it works great. I have had lots of compliments and above all I am extremely comfortable in all situations. They dry fast to and don't drip like a normal bathing suit. So awesome.

    Hi Whitney, good video. So nice for everyone to know where to get supplies. I use Kwik Sew Pattern #3064 for my swimsuits. Which reminds me that I need some new suits or at least one. This is a flattering cross over one piece with gathering to the left side. There are options I believe for the full cut or hi cut in the seat. I have used an old bra or purchased inexpensive bras to use in my suits. I cut off the back and leave enough to sew in the side seam and the armhole straps leaving enough to sew in the shoulder seam. The bra makes for a nice silhouette and alieveates time to make the bra portion for the suit.

    Hi Thanks for this, looking forwards to seeing the results!i was going to make the seamwork bikini set reno? and dakota!
    I was planning to use power net all over rather than swimsuit lining. Will this cause a problem do you think?
    Thanks

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  5 лет назад +1

      I had issues with using power mesh all over. It made it so that the suit didn’t have enough vertical stretch and, therefore, wouldn’t pull up high enough. I was, however, making a one piece so it might be different for a 2 piece. I would definitely make sure the power mesh has the appropriate amount of stretch that the pattern requires. Let me know how it goes!

    I have thought many times of asking you for a possibility which might be of interest to some. Could we do a shopping day in Indianapolis with you. Not sure how many viewers but many times you see fabric shopping trips done. Just a thought I wanted to share. Love this and wish I'd had this last year because I made my Mother one last year and she has one hip 2 inches higher on one side so if you know how to adjust for that on the pattern I bet it would be easier than what I did. ha again love this

    Soooo, I LOL'd when you said you lined a suit w power mesh and then couldn't get it on. I did the same thing w vD of the Mottesloe bottoms. I almost trashed them until I heard what you did. I carefully trimmed out the power mesh and they fit fine. I DO know how to measure myself ... Anyhoos, it'll be great practice to attach elastic. Also, just discovered Edgewater Avenue on RUclips. She has great tutorials on swimsuit sewing AND on concealed seams, which is great for all sewing, in general, because I love the concept of reversible clothing. She has great tips on elastic ... check her out!! Love your vids ❤️

    I could look it up but I will just ask, what is this rash guard of which you speak?😸

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  5 лет назад +1

      It's a swim shirt. They are usually tight fitting, but have sleeves and go over the bathing suit (or act like a top that goes with bottoms). They are called rash guards because surfers wear them to keep from chaffing (or getting a rash) when their bodies are sliding up and down on the surf board. Most people wear them for sun protection reasons now.

    • @lilolmecj

      TomKat Stitchery 😀thanks for the quick answer. I have tried swim suit making a couple of times, the elastic was my downfall. The first was about 1975, so there wasn’t much available, but the halter top was salvaged. The second one was after clear elastic, but I got a lot of wavy action. If you do a tutorial I might try again. I love the walking foot, my only complaint is how bulky they are, but it is a fair trade off for fabric management. I had a walking foot for a long time before I ever used it, but now I wonder why I waited!
