For anyone having problems with powerhead not feeding properly or getting hot, go through this process of taking things apart and clean any debris from under green geared portion of head. For this cleaning, removing the piece with the circlip is unnecessary. Mine was loaded with stringy black plastic around the main shaft causing the problem and everything great now. Unless something is obviously broken there is no need to replace the head. The oil filter wrench I thought was a sound idea. Unfortunately, my OFW was not the right size to hold the trimmer spool. Reading your posted comments, I picked up on someone saying if one pulls the green part forward, it locks the spool for easy removal of the nut. Once everything is removed, soak your parts in mineral oil to clean. Once cleaned, reassemble. You will be amazed that auto feed works like a new trimmer out of the box.
Thank you this was very thorough and clear. I especially appreciated how you compared what was in the package with what was removed. My old head fell off while using it and the spring got lost somewhere in the grass. Like you, I read in the instructions that you should save the old spring for reassembly. Before even opening the package, I ordered a new spring. It wasn't expensive except for the shipping. The shipping cost three times as much as the spring. Anyway, I wish I had watched your video first, because then I would have realized that the spring was included in the new head package. Going to watch your loading video now.👍👍👍

Thanks! I didn't have my oil filter wrench handy, so I used an Ideal Tridon adjustable clamp and held it w a pliers. The AH 1522 that I installed eliminates the need to remove the C-clip. It's just: spacer; washer + nut.
Thanks for the video! The oil filter wrench worked great. Especially since my 40 year old electric impact wrench just died. By the way, when I took mine apart I noticed a bit of rust where the keyed bearing slides on the shaft. I applied some white grease, reassembled the old head and it now works. Guess I will save the replacement head for when I really need it.
Since I purchased my Ego trimmer, I spend most of my summers taking the head off the trimmer and restringing manually (I don't have the power load), because it rarely advances the string with a tap. I spoke with an Ego rep, last year, after my frustration of having to do this multiple times 😮💨😮💨every single time I use it, I'd hit my limit. They recommended purchasing a new head, which I did last fall. Thank you for the video. I don't have the correct tools to replace this head, which means spending more $$$ or just constantly restringing my trimmer 3-4 times every time I use it.
I'm sorry that you have had so much trouble with it. That is not normal. When you say that you don't have the tools, do you mean the oil wrench that I suggest?
@Nancy Sutton, well the oil wrench is pretty inexpensive. Also I'm sure that you could borrow that from any man in your neighborhood, especially since you won't need it again. But the socket set is something that every home owner should own. Also a basic set is not too pricey. The impact is the only pricey thing, but is not needed at all.
Good video although it misses a few things you may not consider for newcomers. Tightening that silver bolt too much will cause you not to be able to insert the line in smoothly and effortlessly like you showed. I just had that very same issue but was fixed by loosening it some. When it is tightened too much, the holes never align to get it through

No buzz , no click , nada (full battery ; everything else on head itself is fine.). Also I don't see where the access would be to open the button enclosure. Thanks in advance , I hope . Just to be clear , buying a new head would not help ; problem is ''upstream '' on end of shaft , but above the string head.
I have the EGO, ST 1520 S model string trimmer. It is six years old. The regular head works fine when the trigger is pulled. When I depress the power reload button no spinning no string retraction just one click sound. I’ve opened up the powerhead and everything looks fine inside. Do you have any videos detailing what is behind the powerhead. That would cause the powerhead shaft not to rotate when the button is depressed your reply would be appreciated.
If you pull the green section towards the nut(I think) when taking it off it will lock the spool and keep it from spinning ..... For those people that don't have an oil filter wrench😉 I have a replacement head sitting on my shelf waiting for the day this happens.....mine had a chewed up o-ring stuck in it a week or two after I bought it which stopped it from feeding in or out.....don't know where it came from but I cleaned it out and it works fine. Got the backup head from Amazon just in case! Lol
Yes, that works EXCEPT the nut still wouldn’t loosen. I used a coupled of drops of Liquid Wrench on the nut and it came right off. It’s a good product to have in your workbench anyway. 😊
The oil wrench! That's what I needed! My question is this: can I replace this head with a brush cutter? I know that other EGO models can hold a brush-cutting blade, but I didn't know if this one also could. The other models use an Allen wrench to prevent movement so you can remove the nut. When I couldn't find a place on mine for an Allen wrench (I have the same model as you), then I decided maybe things were too different. Now I'm hopeful!

The notch on the spindle has worn down to the point where it spins inside the ball bearing and never catches. I reassembled and it just spins and never seems to catch any line. Other videos show it moving up and down while also spinning, mine only spins. Any ideas?
How many hours between heads? $45 a pop is a racket, Do you save and reuse lower cover until green button completely trashed? Did your bearing feel gritty and in need of change?
A lot of questions. I can't answer the first one, because that all depends on how hard you are on it. Some people smack the crap out of their bump heads and looks like hell after 2 seasons. Mine had 4 seasons on it and could still have kept going. I don't save the other part, just changed the whole head, and the bearing felt fine.

@@AroundTheHome1 It’s the little black rectangular box right above the green Powerload button that you push to load the string. It’s essentially the electrical components. On the black box it says “POWERLOAD” in the neon green.
My problem now is my power load button doesn’t work when I push it? I push it and it clicks but nothing happens. Any suggestions? Am I stuck manually loading the string now?

I have model ST1500S. with old style bump head. I can not find any video to show how to take the base off. This model when I take off the spool, the center bump piece stays on. I assume I need to take off that to see what holds the base on and hopefully put on an easy string load style such as AH1530. Any ideas?

I have tried to pry off the cap but it does not give. I asked the ego help on the phone but they could only search youtube. I cannot find any videos of my model. Interesting. I think I found more info for your model. It's not one that I am familiar with, but I think I can help. I found the user's manual and it does actually show the removal of the head and a breakdown of it. I uploaded it to my website and added it as a downloadable file. @@AroundTheHome1 it doesn’t wind when I push the button it makes one click to wind and stops. I have a fully charged battery. I took it apart and there wasn’t any debris In there. I’m not sure if the switch under the button is bad or the motor. I thought replacing it with a manual string feeder would be easier.
I see. Well sometimes debris or hay gets under the head. You know where it mounts to the trimmer. If that is all clear, I have had viewers just replace the head with a new one and it worked just fine.
From what I can find the metal blades are designed to only work with their commercial series. I would contact the company to find a more definite answer.
@Kay Major I don't exactly know. I honestly don't know if they list them as small, medium, large. Mine has an inside diameter of 3 1/8". I hope that helps.

Sometimes there is grass or string that gets stuck behind the head. Removing the head and cleaning that out should take care of that.

Got the nut out easily. What I’m having a hell of a time with is this circlip thing. There’s some plastic on top of that.

A lot of questions. I can't answer the first one, because that all depends on how hard you are on it. Some people smack the crap out of their bump heads and looks like hell after 2 seasons. Mine had 4 seasons on it and could still have kept going. I don't save the other part, just changed the whole head, and the bearing felt fine.
Can you show me how to replace the Powerload piece that’s inside the black Powerload part? I just bought the replacement that goes inside

@@AroundTheHome1 It’s the little black rectangular box right above the green Powerload button that you push to load the string. It’s essentially the electrical components. On the black box it says “POWERLOAD” in the neon green.

My problem now is my power load button doesn’t work when I push it? I push it and it clicks but nothing happens. Any suggestions? Am I stuck manually loading the string now?

This is on an EGO string trimmer with the Powerload head. The Stihl will not have that.

I have model ST1500S. with old style bump head. I can not find any video to show how to take the base off. This model when I take off the spool, the center bump piece stays on. I assume I need to take off that to see what holds the base on and hopefully put on an easy string load style such as AH1530. Any ideas?

Thanks for responding. My 1500S worn out head I want to replace is very different from the 1500sf. the green bump stays on when I slide off the spool for replacing the string. I have tried to pry off the cap but it does not give. I asked the ego help on the phone but they could only search youtube. I cannot find any videos of my model. Any idea how to remove the center of my head to see if it looks like the replacement head offered. Thank you.
Interesting. I think I found more info for your model. It's not one that I am familiar with, but I think I can help. I found the user's manual and it does actually show the removal of the head and a breakdown of it. I uploaded it to my website and added it as a downloadable file. The info on removing the head starts on page 24. Hopefully this will give you the info you need. Can the ah1520 be replaced with the ah1530 rapid loader?
I have not tried, but they are quite different heads. Curious, why would you want to remove the powerload head and install a rapid reload?
@@AroundTheHome1 it doesn’t wind when I push the button it makes one click to wind and stops. I have a fully charged battery. I took it apart and there wasn’t any debris In there. I’m not sure if the switch under the button is bad or the motor. I thought replacing it with a manual string feeder would be easier.
I see. Well sometimes debris or hay gets under the head. You know where it mounts to the trimmer. If that is all clear, I have had viewers just replace the head with a new one and it worked just fine.
Can you install a brush cutter blade on this ego model?
From what I can find the metal blades are designed to only work with their commercial series. I would contact the company to find a more definite answer.
What size oil wrench?
@Kay Major I don't exactly know. I honestly don't know if they list them as small, medium, large. Mine has an inside diameter of 3 1/8". I hope that helps.
What a piss poor design to get that head off! Why not use the same method as the non-powerload? I don't have a strap oil filter wrench. UGH!
