Greensleeves - Ground & Divisions

- One of the oldest, most popular tunes, Greensleeves, was in fact much more variable than we know. It existed and was passed around cultures as a ground, often as either a Romanesca or a Passamezzo Antico - in either case, a foundation on which one could build and demonstrate one's ability.
Here we see just such a case: in the second iteration, we have Francis Cutting's Divisions (read: variations) on Greensleeves, one of his more famous intabulations, wherein he elaborates significantly on its harmonic complexity whilst also exploring melodic heights undreamed of in most modern renderings.
The history behind Greensleeves and similar tunes is often labyrinthine, yet fascinating. In my internet delving, I came across the work of Ian Pittaway, the author of the Early Music Muse, a site dedicated to researching the annals of early music and making them extremely accessible reads. Beautiful music! You play very well! A hug from a fan from Brazil
very lovely! the first time I heard the variations was on Paul O'Dette's "Robin is to the Greenwood Gone" but at a much faster tempo. The slower tempo definitely lends itself to quiet winter evenings.
It'd be GREATLY appreciated if you continue making music
Absolutely will be! Just balancing a day job and otherwise gigging away making something of a delay. Glad you liked it!!
@@TheodoreCheek Completely understandable! Thank you!
Great voicing! You can hear all of the individual polyphonic lines really well.
Ah, thank you so much! That can be especially challenging with Cutting at times since he was such a fan of the contrapuntal aspects of the music!
Beautiful 😊
Many thanks!
Beautiful playing! Such lovely music...also, you have the longest ring finger I've ever seen lol
I won't lie, it comes in handy hahaha
Nicely done
Cheers! So glad you enjoyed it!
