  • A stunning version, that's so emotional and heartbreaking. Definitely gives a completely different perspective to the usual "happy" Xmas versions that we know so much. But Judy's performance truly gives it that bittersweet and emotional energy it needs. Let me know what you think of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" from Meet Me in St. Louis.

That little girl was Margaret O'Brien, who got her parts BECAUSE of her ability to cry on screen. The best non-Judy version was done by Chrissey Hine of the Pretenders.

The release of this movie during WWII makes this rendition hit home--so many families separated, both in the US and abroad. So much uncertainty and dread. Judy was especially treasured in England during the war, as many of her songs uplifted and brought solace to those suffering there. Her voice is no less important today to millions of fans, bringing joy and beauty to our complicated and oftentimes ugly world.

Also remember that this was an integrated musical film and the songs were linked to story and plot development. Margaret O'Brien's Tooty is NOT pacified by Judy's song. She suddenly bolts out of the house, hysterically crying, and destroys her beloved snow people. This leads the father character to rethink moving the family from St. Lousis to New York. Margaret was well known for her full on tears crying scenes. In fact, she and June Allyson were known on the M-G-M lot as : "the town criers".

One of the unforgettable magical moments in film musicals, on a par with Gene Kelly's Singin' In The Rain number in that film. Did you know this was the debut of that Christmas song? Garland had a voice like no other; it just went straight to the heart, didn't it? Meet Me In St Louis was one of thee most charming movies ever made, a timeless love letter to the everyday challenges, heartaches, kindness, humor and joys of ordinary families everywhere.

My mom told me that during that time, there was no tv, only radio, and they heard nothing of what was going on. Meanwhile, her 18 and 20 year old brother, one in Europe and her other brother in the Pacific fighting there. Every night while she was in Jr. High school she and her mother and pretty much everyone in town would be at their local churches praying for their sons to come home. None of these kids had ever traveled more than maybe 50 miles from home and to have them so far away, so young inexperienced just parking they came home alive no matter in what condition, brutal. This movie came out then and was trying to send the message, keep the faith, they'll be better times ahead.

Judy's admirers are plentiful 55 years since her passing. There are numerous Judy groups on Facebook with numerous members. Frank Sinatra famously said that most performers will be forgotten, but not Judy. I've been a fan for 56 years. Most of the fans I encounter are much younger than me.

thanks for your reaction to this iconic clip. (i kinda needed this right now.😔) i grew up on this film, and, especially as a st louis native, it was always an annual viewing experience with family. this song's place in our cultural heritage is also important to consider in the context of world war ii, as at the time of the film's premiere (november 1944), the war was still far from over, and for the many families with members actively engaged in combat, this song must have struck a particularly poignant note. also have to give a shout out to: the film's director, vincente minnelli, one of the legends of hollyood's golden age (especially in musicals); actress margaret o'brien, as little sister tootie in this scene, still with us at age 85; cinematographer george folsey's beautiful technicolor compositions; and songwriters hugh martin and ralph blane, for their enduring contribution to the christmas song canon.

You have to remember that this came out in 1944, World War II. Everyone had someone fighting overseas with no news or hope they'd come back. So, this pain of separation from them added was rejected in her version.

Judy Garland is one of all time favorites from the movies, along with her daughter, Liza. There are a couple of RUclips clips of them signing and dancing together. There is a new artist who I am enjoying very much who sings the old jazz standards like Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, etc. since a child, and newer songs like Adele, Amy Winehouse, Sam Smith, and now at 17 has released an EP album. Her name is Angelina Jordan and if you would like to hear and react she has many tracks to listen to and has a wonderful journey to see. Thank you.

There is also the context that much of Judy's childhood Christmases were preempted by her career, a monstrous Mother, and the death of her beloved father. You don't learn to sing like she sang this song by not knowing sadness and loss. And, of course extraordinary talent.

A cordial greeting to you!!... No one better than you, to analyze this incredible singer who is leaving all the experts, literally with their jaws on the floor (Do you remember Jim Carrey's movie "The Mask"? well, just like that)...In 2017, a 22-year-old singer from Kazakhstan, named Dimash Kudaibergen, was invited to participate in the famous Chinese program for professional singers called "The Singer"... In his first appearance, Dimash covered one of the most difficult songs in the world, a famous French composition called "S.O.S. D'un Terrien En Détresse"...Since then all this madness began on the internet, RUclips and social networks worldwide and he is already considered the best singer on the entire planet... It is almost impossible to see a human being, being able to reach vocal ranges of 8 octaves, that is, the 88 keys of a digital piano, which allows him to reach all registers, both masculine and feminine, that is, he can sing as Bass, Baritone, Tenor, Contratenor, Contralto, Mezzosoprano and Soprano...You can see in RUclips to all kinds of experts (Vocal coaches, analysts, singing teachers, singers, youtubers, reactors, etc.), who have dedicated themselves to watching his videos and verifying for themselves that what is said about him is completely true...In addition to all this, Dimash is capable of singing in more than 12 languages...In all his concerts worldwide, tickets are sold in just seconds, via the internet, due to the immense popularity he has worldwide... Anyway, I think you haven't met this impressive singer yet, so here is the link to the first song that Dimash performed in China in that year 2017, the song S.O.S., and if it doesn't bother you, I would like you to mention me as the person who recommended it to you...Warning: You have to be prepared for thousands of views, comments and new subscribers...The video It is more recent, so it does not have the millions of views that the first ones, but it is more complete, including an intro, subtitles in several languages and better audio and sound quality...ruclips.net/video/bDX3FhmyNac/видео.html
