ULTRAKILL: Violence Lore

- The layer of Violence has been released, with new lore waiting to be revealed. Let's go over them all individually before we put them together with everything else.
This video took so long to make for two reasons:
1. New information kept releasing during editing. For instance, dev commentary had a lot to say, but by the time it released I only had enough motivation to include it once.
2. My own ADHD-caused executive dysfunction
Regardless, it’s out and I’m happy. I hope the wait was worth it.

In the developer violence stream, they mentioned that the red stuff covering the earthmover's legs are the roots of the suicide trees. V1 fed the trees to help them grow so they's stop the earthmover.

Ultrakill went from funny robot slightly rips off doom to a whatever the "Hell" Hakita and friends cooked and boy did they do a phenomenal job at it.
This is my favourite aspect of Ultrakill aside from the gameplay: how it presents its story. Initially, it presents itself as just another game from the boomer shooter revival of the late 2010s a-la Dusk, albeit one with a unique mechanical depth and influence from the Stylish Action genre and games like Devil May Cry. But still, at first, the story is minimal, like most boomer shooters. You don’t need a reason to go shoot demons.
But as you press on, and penetrate deeper into Hell, more and more of the game’s storytelling and thematic elements reveal themselves. And the narrative unfolds from ‘go shoot demon’ into something utterly captivating, unique, and beautifully terrifying.
What I would give to live in a world where more games have Ultrakill’s level of skill, talent and passion behind them…

The first time we got a 'darker' undertone was 2-S and Lust. You saw the existential dread of death, Minos' tragedy with his people with the empty cities. The implication of Gabriel slaying Minos with no mercy.

Hakita liked a comment from of the music pieces saying that the Final was in fact WW1, he's basically agreeing that the war that kicked this all off was in fact the Great war and befittingly, the war to end all wars. A war so massive it and costly soliders thought there wouldn't be a war a so bloody like this. Instead of it ending 4 years later, it just escalated and kept escalating.

V1 is just another toy for Hell like every other machine.
I mean, i wouldn't be surprised if V1 is a "favorite toy" Of hell. But still.

Something I'd like to add: it's stated all the Earthmovers died out, thus ending the war. This means that something would've needed to revive them. Considering humanity didn't start hell expeditions until after the war, it makes no sense for them to have had access to Idols. To me, this means that Hell revived the Earthmovers, which is why they are so fleshy inside. Another thing is the 7-4 book. It has some serious lore implications. I believe that it is showing Hell's admiration to the Earthmovers. It also show's how the development of machines worked. Every machine was built to counter another, such as Guttertanks countering Guttermen. If this was always the case, that would mean that V1 was meant to counter the Earthmovers, as it was still in development by the time the war ended. The only machine it could've countered in that case would be the Earthmover. Also, it states that "The pages of the book are blank", and the texture itself shows no text on the pages. This means that it would be some force, likely Hell, talking directly to V1 about this.
The guts inside the earthmover are something every machine posseses its likely to keep the Blood fresh

As the other reply stated, Hakita all but confirmed that every other machine (except probably the gutterman but that's just speculation) has guts inside it. My theory is that the idols serve as the shield generator in order to pick up the slack left by the absence of solar energy, allowing them to function without needing sunlight. Also since blood is essentially just liquid soul, that makes machines technically living things according to who or whatever chooses what is alive enough to go to the afterlife, allowing them to be sent to hell to be punishmed for their violence.

My biggest theory regarding the Minotaur is that the In-Game Terminals are responsible for the names being crossed out.
The Terminal Entry at the End of P-2 explains the symbiotic relationship that the Terminals form with the machines, particularly how the terminals will asses the entertainment value of recorded battles of the machines. I like to believe (and this could be a stretch) that the in-game Style Meter, and not just the Post-Game ranking results, are able to exist via the Terminals. By proxy, the rest of the HUD would be included, such as the boss bar. Hakita has mentioned before that the enemies in Ultrakill have very blunt names. Hakita has said quote "it's as if something, such as a machine, looked at the being in question, and was like 'this looks like a mannequin' and thus it is called a mannequin."
The terminals log information regarding entities that machines encounter in hell, ways to combat them, and general background behind them. Recording and providing this information for the machine would increase the chances of the machine recording battles of higher entertainment value, and thus curing the terminals of their boredom.
With that in mind, we can come to the conclusion that the terminals do not want V1 (and other machines) to have information regarding the Minotaur. My best guess as to why would entertain the idea that the censored boxes for the sculptor of the Minotaur do, in fact, read 'Hell itself.' Perhaps the terminals do not want machines to gain an understanding of hell's true nature, as that could lead to the destruction of hell and the end of not only the Terminal's source of entertainment but their existence as well.
my personal theory is that because minos was scared shitless by the minotaur and the embodiment of his past mistakes, he put in the garden of forking paths so nobody would have to see its grotesque appearance. minis simply wanted to ignore the minotaur and his reminders of his pass mistakes by crossing it out (hence its crossed out name)
Every machine that's in hell is there because it was either sent there or it went down there for fuel, except for the earthmovers. Not only are they huge, but the terminal states that they all died on the surface, so how/why are they in hell? I like to think that with all the blood that went into powering them (as well as the brain), hell considered them to be living things (which would explain the use of the word "died" instead of "stopped working" or something.) and thus, they were brought down there like a soul would.
Have you considered that perhaps hell simply constructed them in the violence layer? Hell has already modified husks with robotic parts, as well as teleport machines around, so it stands to reason that hell would simply construct new earthmovers to sustain the war within the violence layer.
You both have forgotten that Hell could just pull them down from earth and reactivated them.

Earthmovers were simply pulled down from earth and reactivated inside Hell to continue waging War because "THIS IS THE ONLY WAY IT SHOULD HAVE ENDED."
@tuvergalarga6144 there's still a whole lot of humanization with the earth movers. The terminal and the blank book use words like "corpse" "you" "died" "your eulogy" which seems very human compared to other robots

Earthmover compared to the rest of the machines are far less humane for example: Drones feel curiosity, Mindflayers would do anything to protect their useless bodies, Swordmachine has a literal cult, V2 feels anger and is prideful
Hell is talking about the earthmover in 7-4 Book because it considers them beautiful, they are a colossus of death that wrecks havoc wherever it goes

The lore dump we got in Violence was nuts. We learned so much about the Final war and how it unfolded. The most haunting part to me was no doubt the gutterman.. imagine creating something so horrific that Hell itself said “Write that down!”
One question that has been on my mind for a while now is how did the machines kill the vast majority of hells population so fast. Like we're talking about a huge fraction of not just earth's population, but every human ever. That's a logistical feat that should take years, or even decades, but it seems to be more like a few hours or days. (Assuming the trajectory of swords machines and the V models is normal)
Yet Gabriel straight up says every previous layer is completely baren. The earthmovers seem to answer that question pretty well. For me at least.
Edit: I'm going under the assumption that many of the machines we fight are arriving places before V1 does. Granted the earthmovers, gutterman, sentries, ect are going significantly slower than V1. But the possibility that they arrived sooner is more than likely. Whether they went there willingly, or got dragged to specific layers remains to be seen.
i mean consider that gabriel says that limbo and lust are empty, and gluttony is close to empty, when we're in heresy, layer 6. the whole horde of machines is likely 3 layers behind V1 at all times
so likely by the time violence ends they're in the middle of clearing out greed so
Act 2 and 3 take place in under 1 day (unless the final Gabriel fight is just his corpse or something). V1 was built more for speed, and I know hell is moving v1 around every time he uses an elevator, so I think v1 is just speed running through the small parts of hell he gets sent to, and because he's so fast he's just 2/3 layers ahead of every other machine out for blood.

It's because hell is teleporting everything.
Everyone is being teleported towards machines for them to battle, it isnt a place with logic like earth, Machines don't have to go looking for Food the food appears in front of them and sometimes the machines themselves become the food.
Basically machines are only wiping Hell as fast because Hell is allowing it.

Also i believe the reason as to how hell died so fast is that the layers are definitely just alot bigger its jut the other machines are going through there while v1 is just going on his own route I mean Look at lust it litterally has a entire city so it only makes sense that the other layers are also massive

Perhaps v1 is clearing the way in a sense,killing all the strong enemies which would make the machines basically just have free kills as now there's no Minotaur,hideous mass etc to slow them down leaving little to no competition in that layer
Probably already mentioned but, within game, the original “mankind is dead, blood is fuel, hell is full” is stated in very similar the “feed it”
Not to mention the book in 7-1 with my favorite quote in the game in the same style of “feed it” that being:

I think that particles falling from the sky at 7-4 are drop pods, like the ones, that contains guttermen, guttertanks and sentries through all the violence. The whole layer of violence (exception for 7-1) - is still continuing eternal war.. the war without reason.
Those are actually great flakes of flame, not drop pods.
could be both. i just assumed they’re fireballs since that’s what’s in inferno, but drop pods are falling as well. until confirmation or firsthand experience, we won’t know for sure

There's a flaw in that notion. Why is the sand below us hot then? We clearly see the flakes cause explosions of flame when they impact in the background, which explains why it's so scorching. Also it's pretty obvious that 7-2 and 3 follows the circles of Violence in Inferno so it would be odd to just abandon it entirely for the last level

They are sources of fire from the third ring of the layer, the place where those who committed sin go, violating God, punishing them by making a rain of fire fall on them.
Furthermore, it implies that the existence of the Earthmover was then considered a sin against God himself.
The "F E E D I T." from hell could imply that hell itself has wormed its way into V1's systems similarly to how it wormed it's way into the terminals. Which makes me think that in the end V1 is going to fully controlled by hell to be entertainment for it forever no matter what.

Something interesting to note is regarding the symbol of the Cross through out Violence
In 7-1 the first book you find says that it symbolizes the Tree of Life, which God planted to bring about life to his creations from the "nectar of it's fruit". This nectar most likely being blood. This implies that blood in this universe is more than just normal blood, it has supernatural life giving properties, which would make sense why it would be able to power up machines in the first place, but it also explains why beings like the Angels, Demons and the Prime Souls contain it even though they most likely don't need it to survive. It's more so their life force than anything
This also brings the blood hungry trees in 7-3 a whole new light. While the Tree of Life gives blood and makes new life, the trees in 7-3 takes blood and makes new life, a perversion of what the Tree of Life represents
Unrelated but in 7-4 there's a hidden book found within the city structure that has a blank book, but upon scanning it red text appears with Hell's manor of speaking praising and admiring what the Earthmovers represents and their ultimate fate. It seems the deeper in Hell u go, the more Hell itself communicates with you. What this could mean for us is uncertain...
Also V1 is heavily implied to be created to counter the Earthmovers
Hakita has said that Blood is a motif in the game, Everything has blood and there's a reason for it
The secret note in 7-2 does imply that blood field machines like guttermen make them sentient as the note is from one gutterman who removed its own fuel source
from the gutterman’s live blood source to his codex implying the wars started with WWI, saying something about “the trenches”, I fucking love the gutterman’s lore.

Speaking of the Minotaur in 7-1, let’s note about how we killed it RIGHT in front of the exit of the garden of forking paths, how pissed do yall think it is in the after-afterlife

humans are the only exception in an afterlife, where they either become husks or lesser angels. after that, everything else - all angels, machines, husks, and demons - simply cease to exist.
also, i don’t think that was the end of the maze. i believe it was simply where hell decided to arbitrarily place an elevator to take v1 to the battlefield. that’s not confirmed though so it might actually be the end
I'm pretty sure in the commentary live stream (the newest one) when he was talking about minotaur's death animation he mentioned something about it being SO close, I forgot where it was but you can prob find it because the pinned comment has timestamps of EVERYTHING

There is no after afterlife. You are completely and utterly gone when you die (with a few exceptions). Also, if the Minotaur had left through the Garden of Forking Paths using the exit in front of us, it will quite literally be even more trapped into hell and thus would be unable to see the skies

Hakita confirmed that the final war is just a super long ww1 that ended on the zenith of nonsensical killing, the earthmover, and in the boot up secuence, there's a peculiar number up there "2114", exactly 200 years after ww1
in the lore section for v2, it is stated that both v1 and v2 were prototypes and never made it into full production due to the end of the war. in the gutterman/tank lore it says that every machine was made to counter the last one. the earthmover is said to have been the last machine mass produced in the great war. this implies that v1 and maybe even v2 were created specifically to kill the earthmovers, which gives 7-4 an amazing new perspective.

So.... assuming that V1's last software update (as seen on the boot up screen in the intro to prelude) is the year that The Final War ended, this means that the War started in 1912 and it was the effect of a conflict we know here as the First Balkan War boiling over into the global warfare Hell.
i swear by my left half of my right eye's retna that when i first read the lore entry for the minotaur its creator wasn't redacted it was daedalus. and i REALLY like the idea that daedalus built the minotour. imagine what sort of person he would need to be to build a horrendous monstrosity as some kind of sick and twisted "gift" for minos. it would parallel pretty well with violence as a whole since in the mythology daedalus built the labyrinth that traped the minotour (7-1) and ALSO also the minotour's hammer looks really similar to the flesh panopticon which would suggest daedalus also built the flesh prision which would ALSO ALSO also parallel with the myth since daedalus was imprisoned in his own creation!
but the boxes dont align so i guess that's disproven...
It's fun to think that whatever machine V1 and V2 are prototypes of was designed to kill Earthmovers. This is explained in the terminal logs when they say that each machine was designed to counter the last. V1 and V2 were never finished, however, because humanity made peace before they were out of R&D. This is further expounded upon in the dev stream because Hakita says that the HUD we see is the same as what V1 sees, and 7-4 is the first time we've seen new HUD elements added in a while. Hakita doesn't explicitly say that that's why (or at least I don't remember it being said), but it is very heavily implied by Hakita's explanation.
V2 was created during peace time though
i think the way you described 7-2 encapsulates what V1 was made for and how he was a cog in the everspinning machine of war that humanity had accidentally kickstarted.

P-3 is gonna be V1’s creator or the creator of the Earthmovers. Maybe in the treachery layer for betraying humanity as a whole.
Some things I have noted about the different enemies.
The Minotaur seems to have a reverse-centaur bodyplan of sorts, with its hind limbs being human legs, its mid-limbs being human arms, and its front limbs and head being bull parts. Like how a centaur is a horse body with a human torso sticking out where its neck should be, so this minotaur is a grotesque human body with a bull sticking out where its neck should be. Also, I doubt that the Minotaur was created for Minos by Hell Itself, if only because the lore entry implies that its creator made the Minotaur as a genuine attempt of goodwill to curry favor with Minos, and they just completely missed the mark. Doesn't really sound like Hell's MO, tbh.
The existence of the Guttermen and tanks, and the Earthmovers in the Circle of Violence, as well as the fact that the Mannequins are explicitly inspired by the Guttermen, implies that these specific machines arrived in Hell even before V1, who is supposed to be more or less the first machine to break into Hell. And this implies that the Guttermen are considered extensions of their blood-slaves, and that the Earthmovers are considered extensions of whatever humans went into the wetware components of their construction, and thus these machines are considered extensions of the human souls that are being punished in hell. The Guttermen and Earthmovers are themselves sinners stuck in the circle of Violence.
I really dont think V1 was one of the first machines to break into hell tbh, dont forget hell expeditions and the terminal symbiotic relationship thingy.
If Hell invading Earth is true (most likely yeah), then there is nothing stopping Hell teleporting old machines and reactivating/modifying them, after all how tf an Earthmover got into goddamn mouth of hell.
Also V1 is going hella fast, after Gluttony less than 24 hours have passen since Gabriel fight to Violence, prob descending this fast with Hell's help or smth we dont really know elevator lore.
@@nocwed4831We do know one bit of the elevator lore and that's it's not there, it's V1 perception of their travel through hell and their Desire to get deeper. The elevator don't exist to anyone else

It is kind of weird that after earthmovers, the new peace began, since it's implied that 1. Life started to function as normal, with security robots being invented. 2.the new peace began also because humand discovered that hell is real and so didnt want to make anyone get sent there after death
about the minotaur and it's creation, i find it highly unlikely that a prime soul candidate will come from it
first of all, both prime souls have been built up heavily in their layer of origin, and then promptly never mentioned either before or after their layer. minos had the whole corpse thing and what not, and sisyphus had the insurrectionist fight to keep that name in your head. Mr. 4 Blocks and 6 More has like nothing attached to them by name
however, what makes this even less likely is when you take into consideration the reasoning something would have to make a demon
machines are off the table because they are 100% not in hell at this point
angels don't really wanna do ANYTHING with hell, much less make a demon from it's mass
other demons are far too stupid to consider creating something, primarily operating on instinct and are very hostile, though i will say that mannequins are an interesting exception, being able to make more of themselves and all
finally, husks are highly unlikely to want to create their own tormentor outside of doing it by accident, as shown with the ferrymen and idols
the only thing at the moment that we have definite evidence towards *wanting* to make a demon is hell itself, which is cruel enough to make a monument to minos' mistakes and then give it as a gift
but those are kinda just my thoughts, perhaps this will be all wrong once we get to fraud. who knows

Hell itself is whats being built up to be revealed in game properly so players dont need to see the ARG outside the game, So when the game is finished you dont need a external thing to understand it.
V1 goes from Apex predator to just another toy to the actual Monster of suffering and pain: Hell Itself.

I do believe that, if the machines that were created during the Final War were directly made to counter the prior ones, V1 was probably made to counter the Earthmovers, as it was made and designed during the final phase of the Final War. V1 has ease in finding its way inside an Earthmover, plus their size, so it kinda makes sence

King Nimrod and a couple others could definitely fit, but I think that the most likely option would be King Caesar, AKA Julius Caesar. Though not a player in Dante's Inferno directly, Caesar is indirectly mentioned through the presence of Cassius and Brutus, his betrayers, in the layer of Treachery, and given that both of the previous Prime Souls were historical kings of massive power and influence, it would make sense that Caesar, the most famous Roman hierarch and arguably one of the most famous historical rulers of all time, would be the way to up the ante from Sisyphus. Plus, given that if he IS the next Prime Soul, he'd most likely reside in Treachery, which would be a fittingly cruel punishment by Hell to keep Caesar in the same layer as his betrayers, tormented by their presence for all eternity. Additionally, the creation of the Minotaur as a gift to Minos would fit Caesar's character perfectly. The Roman Empire appropriated the religion and mythology of the Greeks, and given that the story of Daedalus, Theseus, and the Minotaur is a GREEK story, it would make sense for Caesar to try and give respect to Minos by misinterpreting the story and gifting him a construction that represents his history, not understanding how someone might want to forget their dark past.

My theory that explains why there is blood in the earthmover is that hell invaded earth and made flesh and blood in the earthmover. This also explains why the idols are there and why some machines use hell energy.
Blood is in the Earthmover because it, too, is fueled by blood. It is the same as all other machines, only larger.
It was mentioned in other machine’s entries that Hell Energy can be artificially added onto their capabilities, like the Mindflayer or the Drone, so perhaps a similar deal is applies to the Earthmover’s Defense Matrix using Hell Energy. The Idols in the Brain fight must be Hell’s doing though.

The reason I thought that hell had an influence on the earthmovers' large blood supply was that it was stated that the earthmover could not run soly on blood and needed solar panels for the extra energy. However, after the long night, all earthmovers died one by one. One of the theories for humanities extinction was hell spreading to the earth's surface and wiping all our life, which can be seen from enemies being teleported in the prelude. And the fact that multiple earthmovers are alive and the fact that a machine that big can reach all the way to violence means that hell may have influenced them in more ways than just the idols.
I also belive that the cross out section in the Minotaur's terminal is Hell Itself, not King something something third prime soul.
Furthermore, but this is more of a theory of mine, i like to think that Hell and Lucifer are now one and the same. After Lucifer fell from Heaven, with God's light removed from him, he made a desperate attempt to survive by merging with Hell. At the time, Hell was alive, but more of a mindless eldritch beast with no thoughts, driven only by instinct. But after Lucifer merged with it, it became sentient and mantained the mind of the angel, thus his ability to speak/write with the red text. At the end of 9-2, we fight Hell Itself, or rather his heart, Lucifer, and after his defeat all of Hell starts to crumble

The interesting thing about the gutter models is that they have writing on them. Gutterman has a shortened version of “CHELOVEKTANK” (Man-Tank) in Russian written on its arm, and GutterTanks gave “FAUSTPANZER” (fist-tank) written on their arms.
The update for V1 indicates that the war started around 1910, which is World War One, where Germany and Russia were on opposing sides. WWI spiralled out of control and became the final war (it was called the Great War historically)
I think the person who made the minotaur is probably daedalus. In the original greek myth thats who made the maze for the minotaur and is another greek figure like minos and sisyphus. And much like those 2 he is probably the boss for p-3 and this is a piece if forshadowing him. And more will be revealed in the other layers of act 3.

Something else I noticed that not many people took into account. When u go to the terminal to look at the info for the Minotaur it states "NO DATA" suggesting that canonically there's nothing shown on screen nor any actual data on it, yet text still appears before us, in RED nonetheless. The same thing happened with the book on the Earthmover, all the pages are canonically blank when we pick it up, yet red text still appears again. Hell is directly communicating with V1, and I bet these will become more frequent and intense the further down we go....
Another thing of note is in the labyrinth, when we pick up the book, it's stated that most of the text is incomprehensible. Could this also be Hell's doing?

The Earthmover and V1 are not the first blood machines. They were the last that were made in the Final War. More still were made after that, in the New Peace.
There’s still all sorts of machines we don’t know when they came about - Mindflayers, Sentries, Swordsmachines, and the other possible thousands of different kinds of machines that we won’t ever encounter.

why is the earthmover you kill rooted to the ground in a fleshy manner? i don't think a lot of people have noticed this detail. (tbf all it does is reinforce the idea that the earthmovers were revived).

I don't see nearly enough people talking about the lore for this game. I think the gameplay is outstanding yes, but the lore has me much, much more intrigued.
All of this new lore has me at the edge of my seat waiting for more to come.
With the full arsenal update there is a pretty disturbing bit of lore that implies that machines that are blood duped are very much sentient and sapient.
