Great video. Glad to see others taking this on. Used engine oil from a diesel is typically black from the soot making it past the piston rings. When I change the oil in my 3.0 duramax it's very black too and I follow the computer's change schedule. A prior diesel that I owned years ago also had very black used engine oil. Nothing to worry about from my perspective.
Black is totally normal color for diesel engine oil. Suggest you change your oil about every 5000-5500 miles and keep an eye out for oil level every few tank fill-ups. Some oil consumption in a diesel engine is normal especially if you push the change interval as you had done in this example.
Just curious to k ow how many miles you have done since this oil change and what is the oil level now? Also, how much of the previous miles leading up to the oil change were for towing purposes of any significant weight (if any)? I ask because I am waiting for my 2023 Tahoe with the 3.0L Duramax engine. Several have never had to add oil or observed a noticeable drop in oil level but they all tell me they change oil every 5-5.5K miles especially when towing. Good luck.
I put on about 2,500 miles since the oil change and the oil level hasn’t dropped. I think the low reading had more to do with the angle of the engine when I had it up on the stands. I towed about 100 miles before the last change. The 3.0L Duramax is an amazing engine. Really happy with it so far.
@@skymountainfarm good to know it was a bad reading. I was really impressed with the 3.0L as compared to the 6.2L. I test drove both back to back and switched my order to the 3.0L right after the test drive.
The truck plants fill the 3.0s with 8 qts (for break in purposes). Curious if the utes are treated the same way. Keep track of your miles/intervals. I get 6k to 6.5k and change at about 10% oil life. Curious to see if you notice any differences with Amsoil?
Amsoil isn't listed on the AC Delco website compatibility list so I didn't even know they made a dexos d approved oil. Also, I wouldn't recommend following the oil life monitor as they always seem to go way too long. I change oil every 5000 miles no matter what the monitor says, sometimes 4000 if I've been extra hard on it. It states right in the owners manual that this engine can burn up to a quart every 2000 miles, particularly during break-in which can take a while. In any case, it's a good practice to check your oil level every 1000 miles so it doesn't have a chance to get this low. The complicated emissions systems on modern diesel engines require frequent oil changes in order to avoid costly repairs down the road. Same goes for the fuel filter, which should also be changed regularly. Routine maint is cheap, complicated engines repairs are expensive.
Amsoil isn’t listed on the ACDelco website because it seems they it isn’t paying royalties to GM to use the official “Dexos D” trademarked logo on their bottles…
@@cg8005 Either way, if is isn't certified on the label it's not going in my $65k truck. It's not worth the warranty risk, especially given the likelihood of having some kind of warranty issue at some point. I might be willing to try it after the powertrain warranty expires, but I'm not a fan of Amsoil's reluctance to get the certifications that EVERY other brand is willing to get. That said, they do make good products based on the evidence you can find (which isn't much). Anyway, there are plenty of excellent choices that are dexos-d approved.
I’ve also read and heard in other RUclips videos that to get a true oil reading you should let the truck sit for a couple hours. So maybe in the morning check it before you drive.
@@skymountainfarm , that’s what I had heard. But it kinda sucks if you want to do a quick check at the gas station while filling up. What I plan to do is check it after 5 minutes and then after a couple hours and note the difference and hope that difference kinda translates to when I need to check at the gas station while trailering. Diesel oil is definitely blacker than gasoline engine oil typically. I stick to 6500-7,000 oil changes on my Duramax. I do a fair amount of highway driving, if you do more short trips or towing you might want to closer to 5000 miles . My humble opinion
Diesel oil is just black. That's what it does. I'm going to 5k intervals. Truck 7500 intervals Cars are 10k but I do 5k Me being me, and it makes me feel better, I'm doing 5k intervals on baby Dmax
Diesel engines turn oil black after first drive almost , so u can’t go by color on a diesel engine . Also engines are expensive , oil is cheap I change every 5000 miles . Even if you’re not keeping your 3.0 long term , I’d buy a used trk or suv with more often Service history than one that was rarely changed
You really can't tell the condition of oil by color if you really want to know get it tested. There is plenty of life left in the old oil I'll wager dollars to donuts.

I just had my last one done at the dealer so I didn’t get a chance to see the oil. Didn’t want to get under the car in -30…

Why not use an Amsoil filter if using Amsoil oil? By using another brand you negate the mileage interval of the Amsoil oil.

Do your homework on how a diesel engine works and you will understand why the diesel oil is always dark…
