Stoney puts into perspective that Dunston was edgy about the play especially coming back from back surgery. If you’re breaking up a double play, that’s understandable but stealing second that’s different.

Yes it was a hard slide but come on you can go hard and still go straight into a base. Dunston had pivoted sideways Bates saw that and slid with his feet pointing towards 3rd base and even lifted them a bit for good measure. True hard baseball is one thing , I hate the way the rule is nowadays but this play was not text book or how it should be taught or played at any level. Now did Dunston have to explode like he did probably not this was pretty normal for the period thence why the rule change; problem now is there enforcing the rule wrong. Go Cubbies
Dirty slide. Bates was running in the grass trying to go after Dunston’s legs. You could fold someone’s knee and end a career doing that stupid 💩. It’s not like he was breaking up a double play either. Deserved anger.
Why did Bates get ejected? I just don't understand why I keep seeing all these middle infielders getting upset that people are sliding hard into you? If you don't like that, maybe you are playing the wrong position.
I think the slide was fair. I don't think he looked to see where the ball was. I think he thought it might have been hit. Granted he should have looked to see if it was a pop up, but I think he thought maybe it was fielded and they were going for the double play. I think Dunston was out of line.

Dunston had a bit of entitlement syndrome ever since he was the #1 overall pick. I always thought by major league standards he was a bit of a paper tiger.
McRae was as tough and respected as his father Hal. He would have knocked Dunston out if it came to that.
Frank oh shut up and cut it out will ya. That's idiotic and untrue. Ur ignorance is on full display.
Remember McCrae played with the Rockies.
Frank Go screw yourself Frankie boy!!!! Get a better life besides being a racist
He tagged him with his foot as he ran in to him.
@Mike W
I always figure that fisical contact should count if yhe playes is got possession of the ball.
But rules are rules i guess.
That slide was dirty and it's not a double play ,he never made an attempt for the bag
That absolutely was a shitty slide trying to take his legs out. If he didn't jump his knees would have been wrecked.
He knew he was going to be out by a mile because the swinging bunt play was on, once pitcher swung and missed Bates was a dead duck at second, bates had no way of knowing that throw wasn't all that accurate but instead of going right at second base he went after Dunstons legs like he was trying to breakup a double play which their wasn't, stop sugar coating Ump made the right call, Stone is wrong it was a blocking slide so what if he didn't role over.
That is an illegal slide in today’s game.
Aw poor Lil baby doesn't like a perfectly legit hard slide. What a PUNK! His own veteran teammate even had to set his crying ass straight.
Go Cubbies
Dunston was a hothead
What'd Bates do?
What was the final tally on the Shawn-o-meter...260?
Why did both guys get Ejected?
Dunston is a hothead baby!
Bates was safe and shawon is crying over a routine hook slide executed perfectly! Ya go cubs . 😅
And when they went to commercial, Thom Brenneman called Bates a F*G
Actually, 22 years.
I don't understand Dunston's issue here. Bates had to slide, he's stealing second base. Bates showed remarkable restraint here after Dunston knocked his helmet off. Bates should've knocked him out for that.
But why slide on the inside part of the bag though?
@@OliveOyl12590 .....because back in those days ('95) it was ok to take out the ss/2B as long as you didn't go too far out of the baseline. That was a clean slide, a little inside yes, but clean.
@@eightinches6094 In fairness, the runner keep his legs down near the ground and didn't try to take out the shortstop's knees.
the runner was trying to cut Dunson's legs
If I were Bates throw the left hook a straight right knocked mother f*** out, like the cartoons he would have X crosses eyes
Just good hard baseball...something you don’t see anymore, pity.
I respected Bates for not getting up and clocking Dunston. He would have deserved it. Nothing "Dirty" about that play. Just the good old fashioned "take out" slide in pro baseball. Any real player knows that!
You do realize that was a stolen base attempt right?
