- Ah, yep. It has officially become a tradition. Today I once again had the pleasure of sitting down with a few friends in the Warriors community to discuss the newest release, in this case, Thunder, the 4th book in A Starless Clan. We definitely had a lot to talk about here but it’s remarkably positive. This is definitely one of the best arcs we’ve had in a while.

The bar is underground but i like that Nightheart and Frostpaw don't look down on the park cats or try to make them more clan-like. I hope the clan cats get to play more often in the future, anything to break up the training session scenes
this is soooo true, recently after reading the latest book I wanted to catch up a little by reading the books I've missed so I decided to start with tigerheart's shadow, and oh boy, half of that book is just him trying to make the guardian cats more like the clans, like- dude PLEASE STOP, I really liked how in Thunder they didn't want to start spreading and forcing their stuff upon literally any outside cat group they met
@@Ivy-Tellers yes! I think this book was the first (if not one of very few) times where they meet a group of outsiders and see value in their way of life compared to the clans
That's becuase in Riverstar's home they already clanified them
@@Silvermoon32109 we just can't have nice things, can we?
re: curlfeather debate, i personally agree that there's no reason to assume that curlfeather didn't simultaneously love her daughter while manipulating her- both from the way she is specifically gentle and kind with frostpaw when speaking to her from the afterlife in one of the books iirc, after she's already dead and has lost and would have every reason to drop that facade if she had one- and also just because i personally feel like it makes for a more interesting character if that whole situation is more complex. we already have shallow "bad mother" characters in people like rainflower and lizardstripe. curlfeather fully believing she cares about her daughter and is doing what's best for her while ultimately causing her harm and using her as a political pawn for her own sake and not confronting her own selfishness there until it's far too late is a cool character concept, and the one i hope they run with if we ever get more insight into their relationship.
Curl feather is “gentle” and “kind” because she’s manipulative. Any dreams from the afterlife that Frostpaw has in the past books is incredibly suspect, because Frostpaw’s first vision was the one she had at the end of the previous book. All other “visions” are just Frostpaw making stuff up especially since SPOILER ALERT [Curlfeather is in the Dark Forest and Frostpaw never knew]
For all we know, any “visions” Frostpaw has of her mother being “nice” is just Frostpaw’s idea of who her mother is, which was wrong.
@@Trecherousbeast I mean, don't get me wrong, I am absolutely not discrediting that curlfeather is a horrible, manipulative parent who was using her kid's life as a pawn to further her own power for reasons we have no insight into beyond ambition. I get that, that's the whole point of her character, frostpaw has no reason to ever forgive her for that. I just personally think that from curlfeather's point of view, there's probably some kind of grey area between the two extremes we could interpret of "I am fully empathetic and understanding of my daughter and everything I am doing is misguided and for some benevolent reason because I'm really sweet" and "I kinda fucking hate this frostpaw kid and don't care whatsoever if she lives or dies so long as i can become leader".
Everything about frostpaw's dreams are written weirdly yeah and I'm not putting 100% stake into them, but we still don't know for sure they were Made Up rather than just weird and inaccurate, and the one where she talks to curlfeather is still really weird to me if we are supposed to read curlfeather as this evil cartoon woman who was just Pretending to have affection for her kids and doesn't have to anymore. If she was talking to her from the DF, I think frostpaw not noticing is possible, DF cats have pretended to be starclan cats all the time.
I do agree that although she was selfish, Curlfeather did value Frostpaw's life!
Curlfeather definitely loves Frostpaw and I think it makes her character 100% more interesting for her to be written that way. She’s not lying when she says she loves Frost or that she’s proud of her, but she’s also selfish and scheming enough to make her a chess piece in her rise for power. Also Graypaw and Mistpaw seem to think of her positively even though she probably didn’t pay as much attention to them as Frost, but I would like to think the attention she did give them was genuine as well.
thats the longest comment ive ever seen
Not through the entire review but the authors definitely don’t talk with each other because in this book, when Ivypool is wondering how to talk to Dovewing about Tigerstar, someone mentions “But Dovewing doesn’t visit Thunderclan :(“
Even though Dovewing literally visits Thunderclan and chats with Ivypool in the book prior… 😀
Maybe Dovewing and Ivypool decide of when they meet next time and since the clan seems to be aware of their regular meeting, they know she's not supposed to visit soon.
I'm pretty sure that Fidgetflake of all cats brings up the potential idea that someone led the dogs with prey. He mentions it in Sky and Frostpaw briefly panics about it
This is correct, he points out that WindClan had found prey bones and it makes Frostpaw wonder if Curlfeather's death was intentional. It's what made her realize all the deaths in RiverClan were either leaders or going to become a leader
and then mothwing’s all like “quit trying to scare my apprentice guy”
1:59:00 that cliffhanger at the end of the book reminded me of how frustrated I was that Fireheart didn't get the chance to call out Tigerstar for being evil at the gathering in which he reveals that he's leader
I think the traveling part of this book did a really good job of devoloping Nightheart and Frostpaw's friendship without it being too long or forced. Nightheart cares a lot about Frostpaw's safety, but he doesn't overstep his boundaries in forcing her to talk, which Frostpaw appreciates. They do still get to connnect when they have the conversation about wanting to appease the cats around them, and Frostpaw even gets comfortable enough to poke fun at Nightheart from time to time. Like when Nightheart warns her about going hunting near the river again and she goes "what, you're scared that I'll bring back a fish?"
And then there's the shell game (which is amazing because Frostpaw gets to have fun for once) and Nightheart goes "teamwork! ThunderClan style" to which Frostpaw replies "oh you're a ThunderClan cat now?, I though you were Shadowclan last week, I keep losing track." I love that part because it calls back to the idea of ThunderClan being centered around teamwork, and we see Frostpaw lightheartedly poking fun at a part of Nighthearts's character, which was very funny. I just love Frostpaw's growth so much in this book because she starts out bleeding to death on the moor, unable to trust anyone, and on the journey, she gains a friend who she is actually able to trust and have fun with. She also learns what a Clan should be, and she becomes emotionally prepared to the point where she is ready to learn the truth, even though it's still absolutely heartbreaking for her to find out. I just loved every second of it
I am just glad that it's not another forbidden romance... -though I wouldn't mind seeing her move to TC too so Nightheart could have two wives 😂-
@@MrWereWolfGirl I'm really glad that it's a friendship between a male and female character, and that there is zero romance between them. Also, because of Riverstar's Home, this the second book in a row where there is a male/female friendship, which is really nice
I was happy to see that nightheart wasn't defensive over it. He seems to be a lot more secure, and I like that that applies with a new friend as well, not just his new mate.
It was fast, but I also found their friendship heartfelt. Maybe a bit rushed, sure. But it felt more real to me than other cases.
The biggest reason I don't want Mothwing is because it sets the precedent that you have to be part of the Fire x Tiger lineage to be leader and that bugs that hell out of me. x3 If Frostpaw becomes leader due to being appointed by the clan or something instead of setting it up herself it would be more intriguing, but also the clans wouldn't feel as nepotism leadership as they do right now.
Cause honestly would love an owlnose deputyship continuation! :3
It’s also just terrible character assasination for Mothwing, considering her entire ARC was coming to terms with wanting to be able to heal her clan, and take care of them, even if she didn’t have a connection to Starclan and didn’t want anything to do with them.
But also I just don’t like the idea of a super young cat leading RiverClan. Even IF Frostpaw is technically adult age now, she’s so WAY too young to realistically be a leader. Also. She’s been through so much already, she deserves a break.
And yet… I have no other plausible ideas that haven’t already been, more or less, dismissed by the plot, I I guess I’m just gonna be unhappy 😭
I've always assumed that senior warriors are the cats who have mentored an apprentice already and are therefore able to become deputy.
That means 80% of the clan would be senior warriors lol
The issue is Brambleclaw is referred to as one before being made deputy. >_
Yeah... that makes a lot of sense lol
It's just what I always assumed.
I honestly like the idea of the "senior warriors" actually just being anyone older than the POV cat. That would make a lot of sense.
@@ThatArtisticBookwormYT except firestar never saw Longtail as a senior warrior
I saw it as being either over a certain age, or (in smaller clans) one of the oldest living warriors, depending. Like, after The Darkest Hour, the oldest warrior is Mousefur, who was described as "young" like 2 years prior in Into the Wild. All of the warriors are very young. So calling Dustpelt and Brackenfur senior warriors, even though they're still very young, makes sense since they've been warriors the longest
Can't wait for Berryheart to return....with her ✨️other friends ✨️
She should come back with Sleekwhisker
What gets to me is Frostpaw's whole situation is giving me parallels to something I struggled through recently which is such an odd coincidence but very comforting
I also love Frostpaw talking about finally feeling like a kid and playing. I constantly miss being a kid and it's simplicity and love so that part really spoke to me
I hope things are getting better for you, I believe in you to get through this and come out stronger
@3zra._. thank you I appreciate that. Realizing some things about your best friend sucks but I'm better overall I think.
*Me waiting for Moonkitti to talk abt Squirrelstar*
We have the first female female leader duo since Leopardstar and Mistyfoot!!!!!!!!
I LOVED the scene where Sunbeam stood up to Cherryfall! I thought it was incredibly mature and teaches kids that your problems can’t always be solved by tattling to a senior member of staff; in my experience that only makes your position less secure. Someone took “HR is not your friend” to heart on the writing team!
I'm rooting for Icewing to be leader. She's old enough to have the experience needed, and peaceful and cooporative enough for Frostpaw to consider her as leader. She was also said in an earlier book to "lead patrols better than any cat in camp", which screams leader qualities. Yes I know she's an "obvious choice" but I really don't think that is actually going to impact the decision because 1. Frostpaw is completely positive none of her visions were true StarClan medicine cat visions(although than again the Leopardstar one was definitely real so Frostpaw is probably wrong about this), 2. Curlfeather in the dream is portrayed as if she's a StarClan cat, but we know she's not even in StarClan, she's in the Dark Forest, 3. Mistpaw points out how weird it is that Curlfeather said what she said in the dream, and 4. Splashtail of all cats reiterates this exact point that "the obvious choice isn't always the correct one" to Frostpaw when she confides in him about her worries about choosing a leader, and we know he has just been manipulating her this entire time for his own gain. Also if it's literally anyone else, except Mothwing because I could also see that happening, it's going to come completely out of left field because the only other cats with any degree of focus so far are Mothwing, Harelight(who is not going to be leader because Harestar of WindClan is very alive), Duskfur(who's said to be an elder), Shimmerpelt(who does not fit Frostpaw's requirements for leader because she's very aggressive), maybe Mallownose(who runs into the same problem as Shimmerpelt), and Owlnose(who has made it very clear he would not accept the position of leader).
Two harestars would be so funny
Technically it's not forbidden and could lead to so funny and interesting situations I'd love to read it lmao
@@Holly-xq5hk True, I just don't think the writers would put two leaders with the same leader name in power at the same time. I can totally image a scene at the gathering where Tigerstar asks if Harestar wants to go next and both of them answer at the same time and Tigerstar's like "Oh yeah, there's two of you now."
i think its going to be icewing, frostpaw or mothwing. i really *really* want mothwing but i dont think they would do something that cool. probably going to be icewing and that is going to be so underwhelming
Thunder is definitely my favorite book in the arc so far. It does so much to develop each of the three, and brings back old groups. I do think it's a little weird how the name Riverstar is still remembered by the park cats, but then again he was mythologized like Beowulf or Moses to the park cats.
I liked the Sunbeam standing up to Cherryfall, because where I've grown up teachers don't stop the bullying. They either don't stop it because they don't care, because they like the bullies, the parents of the bullies have power, or the teacher is powerless to do anything. Or the teacher does try and yet nothing gets better. If I had stood up for myself things could've been better for me.
I agree teachers really have their hands tied anyway they can't do anything but tell the bully to stop and that just makes things worse.
Cloverfoot explicitly said that no one consulted her on the Deposing Tigerstar topic
Nutria might be an option. I’ve seen them in the US.
Honestly I'm curious if Frostpaw will even get her warrior/med cat name. We're going into book 5 still without a leader or anyone/any chance to get her full name. If she does become leader would they jump right to Froststar? Will StarClan just come down at some point in the next book and give her a full name?
That would be so wild and interesting 😂
Well, this book proves that she was never mentioned to be a medicine cat. I think she's supposed to be the next leader of Riverclan
"Next time, let's try capybaras!" That would be sooo funny.
“When thunder first came out, I think I gave it much more flack than it deserved” YOU DID 😭😭 /lh
I think my highlights for the book were these (major spoilers obviously):
1. Squilfstar obviously
2. Frostpaws relationship with Nightheart, it’s not the deepest thing ever, but I love how they interact
3. The park cats, them learning their culture and game
4. Frostpaw going to therapy
5. Sunbeams relationship building with Thunderclan cats, not needing Nightheart there to do it
6. Cherryfall being a Karen
My biggest complaint is how they structured the ending of the book
I've been immensely enjoying this latest arc!! I admittedly haven't bonded much with Sunbeam and look forward to Frostpaw's perspective the most in these books by a LONG shot, but it's been fun to read in general, I really like how they're actually exploring the emotional impact of these disasters on cats' lives a lot more in this arc, it feels like. Berryheart, Brambleclaw, and Frostpaw's character arcs all have to do with dealing with trauma in different ways, and it's been interesting to see
I want to see Sunbeam and Cherryfall having a friendship now that cherryfall seemed to respect her standing up for herself
Tbh something warrior cats could really need is basically a mass extinction event in which most of the old cast dies so we can have much smaller clans with a mostly fresh cast
Background characters, too. There are way too many!
They probably didnt think of this but Cherryfalls father was killed by a shadowclan cat. Could be why she doesnt like Sunbeam.
definitely was not their intent im sure but i like this!! give characters actual real motivations to be shitty PLEASE erins! i think cherryfall always HAS been a more.. conservative type of character, even before berrynose died in the broken code. i guess since snaketooth was sunbeam’s mentor and tawnypelt was snaketooth’s mentor MAYBE that’s related?!? IDK, it’s cool to think about
29:54 "broken clode" is my favorite noise ever
I just like the dynamic between nightheart and frostpaw
i cant wait to hear everyones thought on the book
I have yet to read this book but I've been saying it since book one- the least likely candidate for leader is the apprentice medicine cat who was asked to pick. its frostpaw.
Yeah this book convinced me even more that she'll become the next Riverclan Leader.
I REALLY hope Mothwing doesn't become leader. It will set a precedent for medicine cats becoming leader, and it's so easy to exploit. If you have both roles that cat can just lie about Starclan will and lead the cats and to do what they want. Also the clans will always fight things, rogues, each other. How will a cat lead their clan into battle but also heal on the sidelines? No hate to anyone's theory I just don't understand lol!
can't wait for Berrystar, leader of riverclan
You probably meant this as a joke, but now...
This is by far a good book we’ve had in a while
(By awhile I mean in this arc)
Wafflepaw is fun for the name and the name alone
Skyclan: NOOOO! THE FUN NAMES WAS SUPPOSED TO BE OUR THING!
ITS OUT ALREADY?! HERE I COME BOOK BIN!!
Speaking of the dogs Akaria did remember correctly when it was stated that bones were spotted on WindClan Territory prior to Curlfeather's death. I already read Thunder which leads me to believe that Splashtail summoned the dogs by placing bones on WindClan territory.
i think the leader depose rule would have actually been used against bluestar during the faithless arc of her rule, when tigerstar the first brought rogues and combined with riverclan or just brokenstar in general. it would take some brave cats to initiate it but there has definitely been opportunities.
the best timeline is we have squilfstar, mothstar, and somehow sunbeam also gets to be deputy or something
Yayayayayayya! I’m sooo, excited! I’m currently in the car so this is going to be a good 4 hour ride!

Going off the discussion of people being attached to their first Warriors book (around the 2:10:00 mark), my first Warriors book was Omen of the Stars: The Fourth Apprentice back when it was the newest book in 2009! I got it for Christmas that year. I was so confused but it still hooked me enough to go back and read from the beginning and the rest is history! The Fourth Apprentice is still one of my favorites and Dovewing is still one of my favorite characters because of that book!

2:21:27 I actually got chills when Hawkkz mentioned Shattered Sky, I seriously think that was one of the best Warrior Cats books to date. Too bad the rest of A Vision of Shadows wasn't as good, I hope that A Starless Clan sticks the landing!!
Why does Moonkitti's sprite look so evil at the start? XD
Well she was talking about just straight up murdering Hawkzz lol
I take full accountability for saying Moon owed Hawk money on Twitter cuz it’s funny 😌
i cant listen to it now since i had to order the book from America and it takes some time until it's here😂

@DetectiveMisery that's good
I started Into the Wild and read to end of Power of Three, but after not reading the books for years and forgetting about it, I read Hawkwings Journey and Tigerhearts Shadow back to back, then read one of the middle ones of a Vision of Shadows, just before reading Omen of the Stars from the first time. Then I reread everything and read everything that had released at that point and now I read the normal order 😢.
I personally was disappointed with Berryheart- like, she did not do anything to deserve to be kicked out then (well, she has, like her trying to kill Fringewhisker with the trail, (or that was what Sunbeam thought) but that wasn't the reason though. i did think this book was great- its my favorite ASC book so far
I can't help but think of the Imagine Dragons song when I read the title.

Just saying it here I think ivypool's book will start with her waking up after trying go to the dark forest
I don't think Mothwing will become leader. I actually like the idea of Mothwing remanding a medicine cat and I think Mothwing would rather remain leader. However, I do have a few ideas on who RiverClan's leader should be. For one I think Frostpaw might be a plausible candidate. She doesn't expect herself to become leader nor does she have any political ambitions at the moment; She isn't an obvious candidate. Or it might be Wafflepaw or that other cat from the park.
3 cheers for squirrelstar, long may she rane

IceWing, or Mothwing. If it’s Mothwing it’ll open her eyes to really believe, trust in, and accept StarClan
I feel like I'm the only one who thinks this is on the same level of sky on enjoyment. I like Shadow and River way more. I feel like those too books have stronger characters
Can we talk about all the errors in the book? Like extra words been added or some missing and the inconsistency with the genders of the cats
MY FIRST BOOK WAS ALSO TIGERSTAR AND SASHA... #1 though, not #2. It was a gift from a family friend at a pool party around memorial day? labor day?
09:50 The blurb for book 6 is actually really friggen awful. WHO is approving these spoilery blurbs?!?!
I’m with Moonkitti. Tawnypaw super edition. However, leave Tawnypelt’s Clan out of it. Bring it to Tawneypelt’s perspective in the new series: her thoughts on the rebellion against the Warrior Code changes, her feelings about her son’s current leadership, and how these things compare and contrast with her feelings as a ‘paw. That would be awesome.
