    Fuck yeah man, I'm 41 now, but when I was 25 I bought an older 2nd Gen Toyota 4Runner, and I FUCKING LOVED THAT SUV. I put about 30K miles on it before the engine blew up, unfortunately. However I offroaded it like crazy, went on a million adventures, fishing camping, everything. I lived in Tahoe at the time. Good for you for driving this 3rd Gen. It's an excellent "sweet spot" in terms of older-vehicle simplicity, and the engine has more power than my wimpy 3.0L V6 2nd Gen engine.
    Now I have a KDX200 too, and your long review of it was definitely an influence on my buying my own KDX. I love it, have put 60 hours on the bike already, after a complete down-to-frame and rebuild. I live in central Oregon.
    I love your videos man, keep up the great work. Can't see what you get into next, and I look forward to seeing more videos that mention either your 3rd Gen 4Runner, or your KDX 200. Peace.

    Amazing way and will to live!! Don't know when you served or where you were deployed but thankyou for your service. You've earned this choice and freedom our wonderful country affords you. Those kit/bolt together trailers concern me in regards to the terrain you travel on. Not a complaint or critique at all. But maybe a welded together utility trailer(5×8) with front and side rails? You could attach side mount truck boxes that aren't as wide as the in-bed ones to the side rails on the trailer for permanently mounted and lockable storage. The side mount truck boxes could hang above and over the outer edge of the rails and wouldn't take up too much space in the trailer for your bike. Just a thought. Love how you're living, keep it up.

    3rd gen 4runners are amazing, i love mine. Just make sure you check those lower ball joints every once in a while, especially if you’re running it offroad or jumping it. Your entire front wheel assembly is liable to fall off if it fails, and that would be a hell of a shitty situation should you be far from the nearest town with no cell service. Great vid though, and I’m looking forward to see what comes next!

    I’ve been camping out of my 4Runner for the past two years with a setup similar to yours. Most of the time myself and especially my dog actually prefer it to staying at the hotel. Just like you said, it’s our own little haven of piece and quiet where ever we go.
    My setup also didn’t involve building anything, but it’s a bit simpler, since I’m a bit more minimalist, usually need to boondock at truck stops, have a dog with me, and also use it as my daily driver - so I need to be able to load and unload quickly. Just a narrow memory foam mattress and everything else inside strategically tucked into various spots. I use almost entire soft bags, which saves a ton of space since they squish down to whatever is inside them. I don’t leave them outside overnight, so I don’t really need water resistance.

    If you dont have to go to work in the morning, living in a 3rd gen runner aint so bad provided you are somewhere fun. I lived in a 4runner for about 8 months because of the crazy rent in california. I was doing construction at the time. Sometimes you just want to take a shower lol. Urban camping is sketch regardless of what you drive. I restored mine as i lived in it. My runner kept me alive. Its pretty good off road too.

    I’ve been off the grid racing/riding all across the country for the past 2mo. Granted I got a travel trailer for a good deal. The best investment besides the trailer itself is a generator to run AC. At least now it’s getting into the season where it’s not necessary. Also a Jackery solar generator&panel to charge your devices if you don’t want to be running the car/generator. Hit me up if you’re ever down in AZ/Tucson!

    Love the build! I was gonna ask why you opted for a trailer to haul your bike rather than just the hitch mount, seems like it might pose a challenge to navigate rougher terrain or backing up, but then you loaded it with totes 😂. Working on a camper build in an Astro van with a similar purpose of getting to further riding spots and staying longer in more comfort. Great content as always, looking forward to more videos to come

    Just found your channel and it's so cool that we drive the same car and ride the same dirtbike I've been driving a 4x4 1998 4runner for the last year and i put so much work into it. The thing looks, runs, and drives like brand new. They're so amazing. I also got a 1994 Honda XR250 with the 277cc big bore. Had it since i was 16 years old (28 now). You've inspired me to put some more time and money into getting my 4runner setup for living and hopefully me and my GF can take a year off and travel the US in it and do mobile living like this. How confident would you be doing this with 2 people? There isn't much space back there but i think it can be done. We also got a really nice tent, do you even just bust out the tent at the state parks?

    • @TortureTestMagazine
      @TortureTestMagazine  2 года назад

      I've slept two in my 4runner a few times and it works fine! Kinda cramped but it's not the worst thing. You can fit a wider mattress if you elevate it, and that will give you storage below the mattress too, which would help, but head space will become an issue. Already hard enough to crawl around in there or sit up and drink water with the mattress as low as possible. Lots of trade-offs to consider every step of the way lol

      Yeah... Tacos are totally awesome but a 4runner is also totally awesome and the insulation factor and ease of access for moving about and sleeping in the back is a huge plus. I have no problems putting 8 foot lumber in the 4runner either lol. And I just added a nice external AC unit that wouldn't have really worked out the same with a separate truck bed... the list kinda goes on and on... Taco is great but 4r is great too. It depends on the area. I prefer the federal BLM land and where I'm generally staying it's 14 days before you have to move a few miles, but this BLM office said their policy is to start counting at the point they contact you. Unless you're a problem, they don't contact you lol.

    @Torture Test Magazine What kind of bike carrier is that? I'm looking at getting 1 similar and how do you like it?

    • @TortureTestMagazine
      @TortureTestMagazine  2 года назад

      I think you might be referring to the black widow carrier I was using before I switched to full time trailer. That thing was okay for a few years but eventually all of the welds started to break. I was not easy on it, but in the future I'd like to get one that holds up even to rough use

    • @TortureTestMagazine
      @TortureTestMagazine  2 года назад +1

      Good question. I know a lot of people like to mount a legitimate air compressor in their rig. I just have a cheap Walmart one and it's crap but it gets the job done for airing up things.

    2 wheel drive? That takes some guts to go way off road alone with out 4WD.

    • @TortureTestMagazine
      @TortureTestMagazine  2 года назад

      The good thing about doing this solo with 2wd is when you do get stuck, you won't be in a very hairy situation at all because you just can't get very deep to begin with. So it's easy to find the limit, get stuck, and unstick it. I just don't mess with weather because 2wd doesn't even stand a chance. If there's bad weather coming in, I'm not staying anywhere with the slightest of hills.
