Man this comment just gave me the most annoying nostalgia but something interesting is one time I killed all factions and went to talk to yes man killed him (because he says he’ll just respawn in another securitron but he didn’t the quest marker just stayed on his dead body and I was fucked

You can soft lock the game without glitches by killing heads of all major factions (House, Moore & Crocker, and Ceaser & Lucius).
After that, if yes man is not in the lucky 38 mainframe, the you can use energy weapons and kill him by disintegrating or plasma melting him so he won't respawn. Can't even do the battle of Hoover dam after that.
Now this is the kind of softlock I was hoping for.
Isn’t Yes Men’s lore stated that he has a backup in every Securitron (Including the army of them implied to be keep somewhere by Mr House) anyway, before you install him?
So story wise, even if you completely melt one of them it wouldn’t matter?

The PS3 port is a soft lock. You get 5 hours of play, and then the game shits itself and doesn't want to work anymore

there actually is another way to get back up from the lucky 38s OOB, but it's completely insane. Dead money Complimentary vouchers float when you drop them, so you could climb up to the tower, placing the vouchers down to get higher, and picking the lowest ones up when you need them to get higher, get onto the roof, and then fall back through the hole

@@mappingshaman5280 The engine for FO3 and NV both have issues with things floating and I've seen in FO4 where a bunch of stuff will inexplicably pass through floors and ceilings and cause issues like that.
It's funny that you mention that you can accidentally softlock yourself because I did that in a casual playthrough. I wasn't saving manually or with quick saves and was just using auto saves. I had finished fighting cazadores and wasn't paying attention to the poison, so I walked into a cabin then immediately died from poison. I had no healing items so I just spawned and died until I gave up and used console commands
Once softlocked myself in vault 34 on my first playthrough because i had no more rad meds or a hazmat suit, all autosaves were in the vault and the only save i had was in the vault all on the PS3 so i couldn't cheat my way out without jailbreaking.
I wasn't the brightest kid to say the least but boy was the All American fun to use on the soul ghoul survivor every time my autosave loaded.

i once softlocked myself in skyrim, an ice attack *I DODGED* but saved just before dodging kept killing me - worst is, if the game gave me control right as it resumed, i'd be able to escape (as i could on the first attempt before the saving & loading) but the black screen that happens still lets attacks resume, while not letting me control
i was stuck dying there and had to use noclip to escape, fuck being stuck in a loop of death cause the engine's craziness
Uhh, pretty sure you get multiple autosave slots in NV. But then again it's been a while since I last played it.
I soft locked myself inside the vault of fiends. I had 40 something lock pick maximum no saves and inside the room with motor runner but somehow the exit locked itself with an average lock and I was like 10 XP away from maximum to level up after killing and hacking and doing everything I could inside that room to get XP
I had a playthrough ending glitch in New Vegas recently but it was so funny that it was worth it. I was playing a Legion character, had burned all my bridges with the BoS and NCR, and I'd gotten to a key branch in the story, whether to save Caesar from his brain disease. Now normally in Fallout games I'm quite careful to make a couple of saves in case crashes occur, but I'd neglected to do so for hours and I used my quicksave right in front of Caesar for the key moment in this story (intending to potentially go back later and play it out later with the other decision). So that's where I was, level 30 something, huge amount of time sunk into the character.
Let's back the story up a bit. The initial purpose of this playthrough was to test I I could forge a Brotherhood/Legion alliance by getting idolised by both and ousting Elder MacNamara, something I'd never tried. In my dealings with thr BoS I'd done Veronica's quests to bring them technology to support her case, and I came across Euclids C Finder. I used this little baby to soften up a bunch of the more difficult locations, including the deathclaw hollow at the very east of the map. Very broken apocalypse gun, with 2 balancing features: one shot a day, can't use inside. Remember that second feature.
So one day I'm hunting some Fiends in West Vegas (I wanted Violet's brain for Rex if I remember right) and I think open air compound, perfect place to fire off the death ray. I get the charge sound, the lasers circle the point of impact and flash... and then nothing. Another FNV bug, my toy was broken.
Anyway I clear the raiders the old school way and continue on with life. About 4 or 5 in game days pass, a few quests get done, I end up finding out the Brotherhood has to go so in we go and murder them. Sorry Veronica.
So me and Veronica pack up and head back to Caesar and this is where we return to the present. I quicksave in front of the man and the stars align. The moment the menu closes a literal blue bolt from heaven crashes down and disintegrates both Caesar and the Courier. It was the bloody C Finder. I cannot explain how funny this was in the moment. Veronica was standing outside the tent after I'd murdered her family and the 2 men responsible were just evaporated.
The only other save game within days of playtime I had was the autosave into Caesars tent. I loaded it up and about 1.5 seconds later the same explosion of light, this time at the end of the room, Caesar dead and the courier alive. I loaded again and spun 180 degrees instantly. This time the blast centered on me. Dead.
I tested again, managing to exit the tent by spinning and pressing exit in one motion. The blast did not go off. But then, going back into the tent, the same thing, 1, 2, boom.
My Legion playthrough was over. I could either leave the Fort forever and go with Yes Man, or end it there.
The implications of what happened made the decision clear. Veronica knew about our plan to destroy the Brotherhood. She could take revenge against me in my sleep, but she couldn't get to the architect of the plan on her own.
So she bided her time and did what she knew how to, play with technology. She studied the C Finder at night and built a device that could jam and release it's firing command to the satellite until a moment of her choosing, a moment when the Courier and Caesar would be in the same room...
There was only one ending to that story in my mind, we both died in that tent. Veronica had her revenge. And I spent the next 2 hours laughing.

In the Lucky 38 basement there is a small gap above the force field, if you fire a mini nuke over that and blow the securitrons up House/ Yes Man won't finish their dialogue and you'll be trapped there.

FNV backrooms. Ngl I started to get uncomfortable when you landed in the endless ocean.
there is something especially unsettling about an infinite body of water with no seafloor or shore in sight.

There is another area in the game where you can get out of bounds, it's in Searchlight Airport. They forgot to place an invisible wall on one of the fences, so through some platforming shenanigans, you can hop right over that fence. Never really tested it to see how easy it was to climb back in.
I genuinely can't tell what's creepier, New Vegas' vast emptiness or the Backrooms.

I was stuck in a soft lock on console at the silver rush after accidentally walking past the guards during the scene where they shoot that person in the main lobby, I was getting shot at so i panicked and left and then thought, “maybe i should steal a better gun from them and just kill them all”
I walk back inside and I was stuck forever to get shot, but instead of just giving in and accepting defeat by loading an old save, I tediously micromanaged every move to be able to get out for 40 minutes straight. And I was free.
I was actually wondering if a hardlock is something like a bug that happens and locks the game every time you try it. Like maybe the game crashes every time you enter the lucky 38.

My game give me a error code 80 every time I try to launch it rn. Something went fucky when I tried quicksaving/loading with a controller plugged in. Started getting more and more crashes and stuff until it wouldn’t launch. I think I broke something
Exiting FO3 Jury Street metro station with autosave enabled can sometimes cause PC to become lodged in the stairway steps and will create an autosave potentially overwriting your ONLY save file. Although this can still be fixed by simply restarting the game from the very beginning.
@@kristianperryadams That's why doing a periodic manual save is a good idea. Not that the autosaves should do that.
My most desperate softlock that broke my entire playthrough was in Far Cry 2, when I had a big brain moment and wanted to see if I can muscle myself through the "fainting and blacking out" effect and get to the second map early. I eventually drove a car deep enough before the game downed me, that I respawned in the outpost between the maps, and couldn't go in any direction from there.
That's on a whole nother level, I gotta try that sometime

I saw something interesting on Reddit which is a decent softlcok. If you go to the lucky 38 suite and kill yes man, you'll be stuck there, in your own personal Seria Madre vault.
I remember getting softlocked by getting a bos uniform, going into the NCR embassy getting the NCR angry and then going to Benny’s casino. Worked like a charm

My favorite moment was i disarmed a bomb trap in vault somethingorother. The one with the wounded ranger.
Anway when I came back out of the load door. The bombs went off for whatever reason. So they would explode before my screen even came back from blackness. And the autosave would cause it to rapid repeat.
Funny enough. The game got confusdd how to gib the me and my followers. So 3 spaghetti monsters for heads and limbs would fill the death screen.

I mean, there are no doubt some ways you can soft lock quests, like in fallout 3 where if you were able to kill someone fast enough before your control was locked, people would stand around and wait for an action that won’t come, but that was probably through console commands or something

There's a nook in the collision map on the mountain by foxtrot radio base where you're trapped falling forever unable to move, and also unable to fast travel because you're falling.

I love softlocks, it's so fun seeing how the game could accidentally destroy itself as a design issue rather than a programming one... Yah know primarily. Obviously it still required other errors such as the wall clipping but creating a giant void area and setting the respawn point in it are clearly oversights and not glitches. Hell even the Ocean seems pointless yet couldn't have been by mistake.

You can kill him at Benny's suite, but he'll respawn every time cell is loaded. Unless you'll manage to desintegrate him with laser/plasma weapon. Then he won't respawn

You could theoretically use the infinite dash to go back up the way you came and do the speed run clip to get into Mr. House's chamber.
Using console commands, you can just teleport to goodsprings and leave if you really wanted to.

Or are you still "in" the Lucky 38, therefore considered in an interior cell, and blocked from fast travel?

Just to get one technicallity correct , the Lucky 38 does not despawn (it will be alwas there) only at some point the occluders kick in so you are unable the see it, this technique is widely used as a method of saving resorouces , same goes for LODs but LODs arent even programmed thee because there isnt any chance of them being there logically :))
While playing Operation Anchorage I entered the Chinese HQ with low health and not enough ammo,as you can expect Sin wei or the fuck is named creamed me, I had to go to an earlier save before I took over the Tank depot, and I still had to take over the other place, 2 more hours of suffering before I gunned down Sin wei and got the overpowered winter T-51b and the chinese stealth suit
Fun fact: the chinese rifle in fo3 is actually a soviet ak 47, the difference between a soviet ak and a a chinese type 56 (chinese version of the ak) is that if the sight at the end of the barrel is open is a type 56, if is closed is a soviet ak
I can tell you that it can be way easier to soft lock yourself. I killed Victor in the suite that House gives you and it wouldn't let me leave without him. I don't know if it was a one off or a common issue (because I never tried it again) but I think that qualifies as being soft locked.

Years past without the couriers influence on the wasteland. Sometimes the couriers old companions think of them but the thought fades over time. It’s said you can still hear them screaming for help in the cocktail lounge of the lucky 38, some say it’s a ghost a remnant of the past.
You can, it’s called being vilified by the ncr while doing the quest where you have to disguise during the president Kimball speech and assassinate him, you’ll forget to save before the quest and get softlocked in the visitors center with not enough weapons to take on all the guards. (That’s how I lost my legion run)
I found an area like this in Fallout 3. When you exit the Capital Building (from the entrance facing Riley's Dangers HQ) just go left on the ledge. You'll eventually get to a point where there's an obstruction, but you can jump around it. Eventually, you get to an opening in the wall, and you just walk into it, then walk forever
My first ever playthrough at launch became a softlock where I was in Vault 34 and conveniently went through a door at the worst timing; being when my rads peaked out and I'd die.
I somehow managed to never made a hardsave, and I went through the door unknowingly that I was to die instantly on the other side.
That one seems more legit at that than artificially throwing yourself out the map area like that and manually deleting saves.

In Vault 106, on the console version of Fallout 3 specifically, if you open the vault door completely, and close it as you are running in, you'll be softlocked inside, as the door can't be opened from the inside (despite there being a panel to open it). I once lost a 130 hour save because of it, as I had fully adventured the vault before I realize my error, therefore overwriting all of my previous saves.
I have softlocked myself out of beating the main questions a few times when I used to play it on console. Usually would happen around the time you are tasked with taking the platinum chip to house/the Legion bunker etc. There are a few different manners on softlocking that were overlooked during the quality assurance phase of the game. Not surprising given the hundreds of different outcomes this game has.

I remember once in Fallout 3 on PS3, back when that is the only version I played, I went to do the Super-Duper mart quest pretty late and for some reason had all autosaves off. I got pushed into the back area, saved accidentally over my only manual because i was on low health, realized I was stuck in the back room shelving which you can't get out of, and so ended that playthrough. I was like 11 so I guess that explains my naivety with saves lol
also before i gave up i basically roleplayed as a dude low on food and water who was trapped underneath a shelf forever, it was pretty sad tbh

I accidentally got myself locked in a room in rivet city and panicked and tried to sleep until it opened and there went all my autosaves for the past few hours
I remember way back in the day in my very first run of New Vegas my game had bugged out and soft locked me out of being able to finish the main quest. Went into the fort to confront Benny and kill off all of the legion that I could, chewing through ammo reserves, stims, and doctor bags, killed Caesar, killed Benny, took everything from both of them, went back to House only for him to demand the platinum chip from me. Only problem was the game never spawned the platinum chip on Benny or Caesar. It just didn't exist. And this was before I had any idea what console commands were so I couldn't have just spawned it in to complete the game. Fun times.
Softlock means you can play the game mostly as intended, but some sort of glitch or error prevents further progress at some point. To get out of a softlock you have to restart the game, like with a fresh save file. Some soft locks happen randomly while others may be a result of triggering the internal trigger states of the game in a certain order or something like that.
A hard lock would be something like a loading screen resulting in a crash every time. Meaning you are locked out of both progression as well as the game. Depending on the case this may be resolvable with restarting with a new game or if it's from issues with hardware, then even starting a new game may still result in the hardlock error state.
You can also just start stacking barrels outside of the Strip and jump on them to get out of bounds and Softlock yourself that way.
You can also escape the bounds of the fort incredibly easily but i think you might be able to reenter the fort through its gate
This reminds me of the dark souls 3 dlc ending (Ringed City). You are basically at the end of the world, sand and ruins of past kingdoms everywhere, you kill the last other being to get their blood.. Then you are free to roam around the big empty arena (ok there is another enemy too). Fortunately you can still warp to other zones via bonfire :)
When you're getting the securitron demonstration from either Mr house or yes man in the lucky 38 basement, if you shoot or throw grenades over the force field and kill the securitrons before they finish then you are locked in the basement and the game doesnt progress

I don't know if New Vegas has this behavior, but in Skyrim I accidentally discovered the horse tilting glitch (where you get off of it and fly) and launched myself way out of the world into the endless ocean. Saving and reloading put me back at the Riverwood Inn, so clearly there's a default cell if you're trying to load into a worldspace from a nonexistent section of it. If that's also the case in New Vegas, there's a way out, easy but slow
A hard lock is a lock where your only option is to turn off the game.
If you complete Come Fly With Me and That Lucky Old Sun exclusively, while trying to convince your brain to come back with you in Old World Blues, your brain will mention those quests and keep repeating itself, you can reload a save though.
1:17 This almost happened to me. I was near the train yard up north where the blind deathclaws were usually at. They didn't spawn until after I left a shack, in which I had no medical supplies or powerful weapons to defeat them. I could go back into the shack but what good was that? Kept dying over and over but eventually found a way to outrun them.
Some individual quests can also be "softlocked" by getting them into a state where you technically haven't failed them, but you can no longer finish them either, not without reloading an earlier save or using console commands. Happened to me twice, by accident.
In "You'll Know It When It Happens", you're told to speak to Ranger Graham Grant about helping him with security for President Kimball. From what I could gather, he's supposed to walk over to you and initiate the dialogue - if you come up to talk to him instead, which is what I did, the only possible dialogue option will be "Goodbye", and he'll sound like he's talking through a radio for some reason. Worse yet, he will continue to be stuck in this state forever, even if you save and reload or leave the area and come back. The only way I found to get him unstuck is to use the console to despawn him and then spawn him back in, which apparently resets his scripting, and then let him come and talk to you instead.
The second time was during the "Oh My Papa" quest (yes, I took my sweet time to finish it). You're supposed to either destroy the Great Khans or make them break their alliance with the Legion. To do the latter, you have convince all 4 of Papa Khan's closest advisors and publicly disgrace Karl, Caesar's ambassador to the Great Khans. One of these advisors, Regis, demands evidence that Caesar wants to enslave their tribe. If you sneak into Karl's room in the Khans Longhouse, you can steal his diary and give it to Papa Khan, which will both disgrace Karl and prove to Regis that the Legion will enslave them. However, you can also use Speech checks to make Karl speak ill of the Khans in front of Papa Khan, which will also work to disgrace Karl but will NOT satisfy Regis. It will also make Karl's diary useless - you can no longer give it to Papa Khan as proof of Caesar's true intentions. The only way to finish the quest diplomatically at this point is to steal the slave ledger from Caesar's camp, but by this point, I had already been summoned by Caesar and angered him by siding with Mr. House, so I couldn't go back there without getting dunked on by every single Legion soldier in the camp.
I guess the second one isn't a TRUE softlock - you can still finish the quest by assassinating Papa Khan or wiping out the Great Khans entirely, and it's technically not impossible to fight or sneak your way through Caesar's camp to get the ledger. However, I'm tentatively counting it as a near-softlock because it made it extremely difficult to finish the quest the way I wanted to due to what seemed very much like an oversight rather than intentional game design. I ended up using console commands once again to advance the quest forward so I can talk to Papa Khan as if I've already completed all the requirements for the diplomatic solution (as far as I'm concerned, I have).
I once accidentally soft locked my skyrim save because I activated that balista on blackreach and that specific balista has a glitch where it will not shoot until you go into a load screen or something so when I got into sinderion's lab and everytime I tried to get out I would get shot and insta killed and to top it off the game would load me inside the lab, I only managed to get out without console commands because I had learned the become ethereal shout before going there.
I once softlocked myself in FO3 in that swampy hellhole of point lookout. Saved during a firefight out of stimpaks and other healing items fighting some asshole with a shotgun that I swear could track me, only I wasn’t about to revert to a 3 hour old previous save and loose my progress so I died over and over and over again in that same firefight for probably a half and hour or more until finally I slipped away. Figured I’d learned my lesson but the same thing later happened to me in the Camp Searchlight firehouse with radiation. Always keep a save handy folks

I remember when I was exploring hills, and my feet got stuck in the ground. I couldn't fast travel when jumping or falling, and couldn't walk or jump out of the ground... This happened several times, so that I had to reload a save. And learned to avoid hills...

Instructions unclear. Beat the base game, the dlc, all the overhaul mods all without a single glitch, bug, or exploit.
I don't think this area is separate from the main wasteland, because I've got to the same area by escaping the map at the southwest near the Mojave outpost. I found the same area shown here, a huge empty desert bordered by an infinite ocean. In other words, I don't think this is actually a softlock, I think you could get back to the wasteland if you travel far enough in the correct direction.
I got my save file softlocked in the plant vault. Blew up the gas in the dungeon, went loaded into the next floor, autosave made me load in and die instantly
you actuallly need to get rid of every droppable item, because theres a trick you can do where you jump and grab the item at the same time and you'll stand on top of the item which gives vertical height

I once had my map glitched during my first ever playthrough, and when the game told me I was meant to go to hoover dam, the indicator was around the ranger camp.
So after discovering jacobstown by accident, and re-locating the mark, I went towards the station, thought I could jump from rock to rock to reach the bottom, then I couldn't move and couldn't fast travel cause the game took it as if I was falling...
So, had to do a restart, after about 2 hours of surviving legion hunters and cazadors.

one time i wasnt looking at my rads in vault 34 and when i went through a door (which ofc auto saves) i died of radiation poisening instantly.
maybe i could have spammed the pipboy to get some rad away but i just loaded before i entered the vault. still, i didn't even have to do anything and still got softlocked.
You can soft walk if you kill the way you need to get the spaceship part from early in the game
Father Elijah got softlocked in the vault of the Seirra Madre for example

i once got stuck in an unloaded version of the strip where when spawning in it wouldn't load so i would fall through the map and keep respawning into nothingness
I found out the hard way on my first playthrough that if go thru a door right as you die the game auto saves when you exit the loading screen making you revert to a manual save or you just jeep dying over and over again.
