Can we just stop for a moment, consider how the olympian gods react in most of greek mythology whenever someone annoys them just a little, and appreciate how insanely tolerant Hades is by comparison?
Great observation! I also always thought that it was obvious that while Hades isn't going to win any awards for fatherhood, it's clear that he loves Zagreus if only because Zagreus can prance around the House between runs and Hades just lets him mess around. He doesn't do anything to actually stop Zagreus from ransacking his realm and only appears at the very end when Zagreus is about to make it out. In his own way, he's such a softie.
If I recall correctly, Hades was actually quite decent towards the ones around him. He treated his wife with respect and wasn't a vengeful fuck like the other Gods. I dunno why most modern media portrays him as a villain, because from all the Greek pantheon, he was quite decent. No wonder the other Gods wanted him bound so far away from them. He was too good for Olympus.
thanatos is so duty-sworn and work is everything to him...except for when it comes to zagreus. proves just how deeply he's in love with him. the writing in this game is everything
The way Hades' voice dropped when he said 'You dare to lecture me' was terrifying. If I were Thanatos that would have made me teleport to the other end of the Earth.
Also, when he told Zagreus about how Persephone ended up in the underworld and made him swear an Oath to not tell anyone. At the end, he just says in the same low voice: "Remember your oath." Hades may be patient, but there are times, when he shows both his authority and what he considers serious business.
The last time Thanatos took an involuntary holiday, when Sisyphus had him locked up, it turned out to be a terrible idea. So I guess Thanatos has the ultimate job security.

It's like the most expressiveness we've heard in his voice and the logical part of me knows he is full of True Fear at this moment at what punishment Hades might inflict on him but it also just sounds like he just got caught sleeping with Lord Hades's son and is Panicking about it. Thanatos is death incarnate he collects the dead and sends them to the underworld his realm hades rules the dead who inhabit it and is the warden of Tartarus this is what i remember so i could be wrong with some of the details.
Hades rules over/organizes souls, but since this is the underworld aka realm of the dead, and thanatos is the god of death, i think hades considers the place technically belonging to thanatos. It's like Hades owns a business but the building he's using belongs to thanatos, that's how I think of it
In this game lore they say that the underworld is the realm of the Cthonic gods, not the olympians. So Hades rules the place but it is not his, and Tanathos is a Cthonic god. I thins this is what he means.
In Mythology Hades wasn't originally God OF anything, none of them were, Olympians were simply powerful divine beings. When they overthrew the titans, however, the three brothers drew lots to see who gained dominion over the sky, the sea and the underworld. Since Thanatos is the deification of Death, native to the Underworld, it's technically his birth realm whereas Hades is King of the Underworld and simply rules over it as it's imposed leader. Hades is there to make sure the Underworld is kept in check and nobody escapes/enters that is not meant to, Thanatos however actively sends souls to the place and without him the Underworld wouldn't NEED a King to rule it.
@@cupotea7698 this isn't entirely correct: Hermes also takes care of collecting souls, and Charon of their transport; but certainly without Thanatos enormous complications would arise in the underworld
Thanatos is the personification of death, while hades became the god of the underworld essentially by drawing straws. Hades is in charge, but without Thanatos nobody would be able to die, so he’s arguably more important to the underworld’s functioning than Hades is
Hades is the CEO, but Thanatos is the head of IT who's been with the company for 30 years and is the only one who knows how all the systems work. If Than quits or gets fired, everything goes to shit and there's nobody who can fix it in a timely manner.
Crazy I never got this. The dialog system is kinda wonky at times. The whole nyx not wanting Dusa and zag to talk is all outta whack for me. Then that specific plot line would only up every 3/4 runs, sometimes with Dusa being afraid to talk to me and other times gleefully spouting off nonsense.
Know what I just noticed? Than has the same haircut as Victor from Yuri!!! On Ice. Wouldn't it be cute if in Hades 2, they brought Zag and Than back and had a little reference to Yuri and Victor?
