Hello Whanau - I am from the US, Cali to be exact, but my family is from Taranaki. Being born and raised in the states, I have watched how the folks up here are taking Haka's....and parading them around like its a puppet. I am starting an extensive project where my goal is to educate the folks, kids..anyone one up here about the sacredness and importance of preserving the Maori culture. I come to you first, because you folks..along with this Haka also belongs to me
I am doing an assignment in te reo Māori on Haka Tawhito and trying to find the kupu for this haka so that I can talk about the meaning. Nō Taranaki ahau, tēnā koa, tukuna mai mehemea e mōhio ana koe i ngā kupu!
but this Haka was done by a group up here....in summary, it was disgraceful. This is not how I would like my culture, especially my whakapapa to be portrayed....in correctly. I urge you to not send your words out to any old person who asks...get to know them, see where their heart lays in why they want to learn...and proceed from there...I am sure we will cross paths again...until then
