In A Violent Nature Review: More Of A Bore Than A Slasher Revival

- I've been waiting my entire life for someone to come along and make "POV Jason Voorhees." The concept of following a slasher villain as they go on their journey of mayhem is the stuff of dreams. I've always felt that slashers are the prime candidate to deconstruct in an interesting way. Not since Scream has the subgenre been given a unique perspective and had hype behind it. So, like the 1996 classic, I was hoping this would build off of the films that came before it, and bring slasher films to new heights. Instead of a love letter, In A Violent Nature feels like an insult to the genre.

Johnny Walker: The Movie
Who's still going to watch this film? I am 😊
Me!
I seen it last night. People were walking out after the yoga scene 💯
Go ahead but you’ll most likely be disappointed. I was hyped wanting to watch it but by the end I wanted to leave early. It was not great lol
@@Germeezy eh that’d just be another in a long history of disappointing movies haha.
I just watched ot last night. Enjoyed it alot
Didn't you give Strangers Chapter 1 a 7 out of 10?
Ok that’s insane
It’s almost like people can have different opinions. I bet you liked Pieces, but still cannot understand that people can have bad takes every once in a while
chapter 1 is complete rubbish.. never got my money back
😂😂😂
Being a huge slasher fan (Friday the 13th is my favorite series), I thought In a Violent Nature was a great loving homage. It was a cool little experiment that I dug for being simultaneously familiar and fresh. But I understand the overall presentation is not for everyone. I find it interesting that you and I, Tyler, can both be the biggest slasher fans yet have such opposite opinions on this movie. That's the beauty of film. I always respect you for standing by your opinions and not catering to anyone.
I feel like the only thing that I really latched onto was the filmmaking and Johnny, and it made the film really enjoyable, but it just doesn’t feel like it’s anything more than an exercise that is very well executed, but nothing else
Yes I agree with all that and same. It was refreshing. It reflects on toxic masculinity, it says a lot without saying anything type of movie. The ending was full of tension. The walking is boring until it's not and then you welcome it back. You'd feel chill as a camper and suddenly WTF if this was you... which is the viewing experience as well. Brilliant.
This dude complained about personality like Jason voorhees had any 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤣🤣🤣
Thank you, these RUclips dimwit keep romanticizing the 70s, 80s era which is fine... but only to crap on new stuff.
Hate to break it to everyone but those were objectively bad movies too.
Difference being, no one gave a shit and just enjoyed it.
If freddy or Jason started today there's no way people like this guy wouldn't crap on that too.
Okay Paul Holt.
@@elmstreetfan1633 Some of them were objectively bad, and some weren't. Not every 80s slasher is trash.
@@thomasffrench3639who you calling Paul Holt
@@vorhees2093you “Jason has no personality” when Ginny is explaining the character of Jason.
I saw this movie last night and thought it was great, can’t understand the hate it’s getting
I dug it myself
Popularity breeds contrarian contempt.
Admittedly went in way too high so the quiet parts did make me a bit sleepy. But the slasher gore effects were top notch. A lot of people never watched the gem that was Hatchet from the 2000s and I felt it more akin to that type of film.
People hate it because it’s incredibly dull. 40+ minutes are just watching Johnny walk… the only good part of the film was the yoga scene, every other kill was mediocre at best.
@@IAmUnerring the last kill was crazy. plus the split wood kill
Is it just me or whenever this guy talks dors he have the sassiest attitude ever
Always sounds like he has terrible heartburn
hahahaha
I think he sounds gay. Has a bit of a lisp.
I hope Johnny was wearing his FitBit because he sure got his steps in! 🙄
Definitely generous giving it a 5 out of 10 this movie doesn’t give a pass because it’s more artsy. The camera work is great, some of the kills are great but that’s it. The walking shots would feel so much better if they weren’t 75% of the movie. Slashers are supposed to be fun and movies in general are supposed to be immersive. This movie definitely makes you think, think about how much money you just wasted and more importantly how much time you just wasted. Slow is an understatement this movie was made to make you feel like every scene was at least 30 minutes. For the ending dialogue I was praying the credits would role after every sentence. 2 out of 10.
I mean it’s less boring than 90% of slasher films. Most slasher films are so boring. Even though this films isn’t that great, it’s definitely not boring
Just know people this is just one man’s opinion. The consensus on the reviewer side of rotten tomatoes is a 90%. I’ve never been a fan of this style of horror. I feel this one is right up my personal ally though. Can’t wait to see it.
Yeah, and maybe if you like it, you might find other movies in the genre to like.
Rotten Tomatoes is trash, especially when it comes to horror films
@@Whocares65774 To be fair the entire genre has films that don't do well on aggregator sites.
@@Whocares65774 only really for horror films. But it’s not like fans are any better when it comes to horror movies
@@Whocares65774 Audiences aren't much better
I was engaged the entire way through and thought the cinematography was excellent, but I don’t know, there’s nothing about the film that makes me say “this was a great horror movie” and I think that’s because there’s not much to this movie. I’ve seen plenty of slashers have good characters, and this one pretty much only had Johnny. And he’s great, interesting and entertaining, but this felt like it lacked any real story. Obviously stuff happens, but there’s no real character arcs or character exploration aside from Johnny. Which I totally get, it’s a slasher movie, but I’ve seen slasher movies that are great. It feels like the only thing that had any effort was the plot/events, and the filmmaking (plot is different from story). Basically, I liked it, but it felt hollow.
People do something new and people bxtch about it. But if it was the same formula, people would still complain. I thought it was good and different. People were walking out after a couple of gruesome kills.
My thoughts exactly I don't understand people
They were walking out because the movie was boring.
I never saw anyone walk out after a kill, people only walked out when he started walking for the 17th time…
@@IAmUnerringI’m glad you were at all theaters and know it all. Why I even bother making my comment? They literally walked out right after the yoga scene. Then when the guy head was as in the machine smashing it and cut his head off, the next couple left. Not during any of the walking. But again, you know it all
@@ThePeacemakerDude cuz you was there.
I’m going to give this movie a chance.
might as well in the Friday the 13th drought
I miss the 80s memory videos, always looked forward to the bliss.
This comment section is wild!
I think I wanna upload a short clip of him walking in the woods to youtube and title it "how to walk in the woods" because he does a fantastic job doing that!!
Because Jason was just full of personality 🙄 (that is one of my favorite franchises and I can say that). Weak excuse. Please stop acting like they are high art or that everything that comes out has to be genre breaking… It’s a slasher that took a swing and missed with a few. I’ve seen reviews on both sides with this one. Comparing it to your nostalgic views of F13 takes away from what this film “tried” to do. I can see where the walking can be boring when you are eager to get to the next moment, I also get how it was also calming to some (me included). It’s a taste thing 🤷🏾♂️. This wasn’t meant as negative, just my thoughts… love the channel
I assume you don't like Kane Hodder "because his movies suck." But Jason definitely had a personality, even in the early movies. There's a reason people got mad about Roy in part 5. But yeah I agree with everything else.
@@thomasffrench3639 I see your point there. I love Kane Hodder as Jason. So much so that it took away a little bit of how I felt watching Freddy vs Jason… Fair enough. Kane absolutely gave Jason some personality
@@ericc4040 Yeah, I totally get that on paper Jason doesn't have a personality, he's basically a blank slate until part 7 (literally all the direction the actors were given was "you don't have a motivation, just kill") but that people project a personality on him because of his backstory and motivation. Which is why people don't like Roy; because his motivation was way too clear.
I was with you all the way until you said you loved the channel then I had to take my like away. This channel sucks. The movies they cover are great, but the reviews they give are completely misconstrued and inconsistent.
@@wadewilson8011 Oh no, whatever will I do with that like that you took away that I had already counted towards my reasons to keep pushing forward?
Seriously though, I agree about the inconsistent reviews 100 percent, but I enjoy the other content
That walk that Johnny does is no different from the Jason walk. What is it with people like Jason and this guy having this cool, badass, slasher vibe walk? I like it.
The director never offered to give you a
deconstruction
Or an art house film
The director Chris Nash is just very sarcastic during interviews and that hits people the wrong way
From the reviewer that hated Terrifier 2...
thats not the burn you think it is.
Yeah, because how could anyone dare to hate that or say it's not to their taste🙄 Nonsensical splatter fests that are gross for the sake of grossness aren't for a lot of people. It's even understandable why they can be hated
Who would have guessed "indigestion guy" was gonna poo poo on this?
Modern fans, that's what's wrong with the genre.
😂
No it’s old school fans who say bad movies are entertaining
Dude. Same. Just left the theater. So disappointed. It actually kind of just irritated me after a while.
Not me hoping in a violent nature and strangers chapter 1 would carry my summer horror but so far coming out disappointed on both accounts
There just wasnt any enjoyment
Truly a soul devouring movie
At the end you feel empty and i dont blame anyone who wanted a refund
I really enjoyed it. my brother and I had a blast and it was an amazing mix of originality and known cliches mixed into a brilliant fun time. the kills were top notch as well!
I will try this movie out despite the mixed review. I love the horror movies of the 70s because they were intelligent and interesting. I love horror movies of the 80s because they were fun. I keep wishing for a horror resurgence.
This movie ruled. Little slow yeah, but I thought this movie had good pacing for mostly following the killer behind his back, awesome kills, and an ending that’s similar to Texas chainsaw massacre when you think ab what the final girl will forever think about. I’m sure other movies this year like maxxxine and terrifier 3 will be better but this movie was damn good
hell yes. this guys a whiny little somethin
I had pretty hot takes immediate after watching this movie, but after some time to think, the long drawn out scenes that felt like a drag in the moment, actually make this movie really unique. I applaud the director for doing something different here
@@onetuffspartan1981 Calling the narrator whiny in a comment section full of people who are so pressed and upset because a person doesn't like a movie they like. Yeah, they're the whiney one. Lol.
I think full frame is good for films in the woods. You get to see the tops of the trees. It worked in The Witch.
Just came home from seeing it, it was definitely a let down. It wasn’t bad, but it was very anticlimactic.
Is it on OTT platform?
the whole marketing behind the movie was that it’s from the “killers perspective” which 60% of the movie is the perspective of his BACK walking through the woods. they somehow made every single shot last 10x longer then they needed to
The ending was even wacker!!! Don't waste your time going to see it
Its great for horror movie fans
i like the last 15 mins where the shift is now to Kris. Kris is becoming a killer. With the trauma she saw and the whole night and day of running. Her mind has changed completely and shes becoming a "high tension" lady. Remember the movie is about the killer's perspective. So forget Johnny in the last 15mins. The new killer is Kris at this point and if there will be a sequel then it's her doing the walking around the woods. Remember she was holding a lighter. She will take that gasoline and burn that lady and she will take that axe as well. Part 2 lets follow Kris
When is this getting a wide release?
Today
Today and it’ll hit shudder in a month or so
@@Euronymous_Bosch Thanks. Unfortunately the closest theater is 3 hours from me. I’ll have to wait for vod
You dont understand, the bad acting is purposful to invoke the feeling of the original slashers of this nature, while the film could have done things to subvert expectations thats not what it set out to do. The filmmaker knew what he wanted to make and made it, you simply had the wrong expectations going in.
That can be said about nearly every movie.
@@justaguy7230 Every movie sets out to capture the feeling of original slashers?
The thing is if you play it more straight, bad acting just doesn't work, and can be insulting. Like "this is bad because the genre sucks" is such a backhanded compliment.
@@thomasffrench3639 That's fair
the acting wasnt that bad tho. the lead ups to the kills had bad acting but when it got serious, the performances seemed really solid and realistic. like the scene when the dude is helping his friend after putting Johnny down the first time was really convincing
I didn't know this movie was coming out!?.... but im definitely gonna check it out.... the rising from the ground sounds familiar???.... oh yeah i had that idea a year ago, its good that i scraped it... tbh it kinda sucks but what can i do!
Well it’s only out this weekend.
People have to understand that this movie was a homage to the old slashers and the over the topness/ acting was purposeful… of course in my opinion
Except that a lot of old slashers have good acting. Stuff like My Bloody Valentine, F13 2 and 4, The Burning, Happy Birthday to Me, Black Christmas, Maniac, Just Before Dawn and Dark Night of the Scarecrow and probably a lot more have good acting
They need to make a Leslie Vernon part 2. That had a fun look from the killers perspective.
Just got back from seeing it. I really wanted to like this one.Ive been wanting a good unique/fresh horror film, which it is somewhat unique, but outside of a couple unique kills id have to say this was one of the most booring slasher flicks ive seen due to pacing. Could have been 15-20 min shorter imo. I though the idea of a movie following a killer sounded great , but it kinda fell flat and i can see why it hasnt been done much. And yes, most of the characters are super annoying, and not because they were intentionally written that way i dont think. I was internally screaming at the guy with the chains lol. Again, just my opinion.
By all means check it out, but id wait until it hits shudder.
I’m gonna have to disagree. It was so creepy and suspenseful. Worked for me! It was the movie i wanted Friday the 13th remake to be.
I love this concept lol like wreck it ralph do we really wanna know what the killer is doing in between those kills we see in horror movies ? Lol i like its bothering the adhd in people 🤣
The artsy slasher film.
I am going to go see a movie! Mad max? Or Jason? Which one should i go see.
Cant wait to see this one! Looks so good
This movie apparently has split people down the middle. However, so far, true pure slasher fans have loved it and others have found it boring and pointless. You say you're a true slasher fan, so it is surprising. Some have called this Jason POV and it is similar to the long ago Jason video game (that was hilarious and rudimentary). Some also call it slasher ASMR. That there is a LOT of walking and branches crunching in the film. Some found it boring, while others found it "comforting". LOL Some said all was fine, even with that format, except the last 10 minutes (the one that mentioned that specifically said it wasn't enough to ruin the film but did nothing to propel the reasoning or story or anything and that it was pointless and a bit too long). It has a cameo, I believe, by one of the stars of Friday the 13th part 2. I have heard the killer look (2 looks?) were interesting. I am just dying to see it already. I have no expectations. I just want to see it. I am pissed they postponed the Shudder debut. I subscribed to Shudder for Late Night with the Devil and this film. Oh well.
That’s why I hesitate to call myself a slasher fan. I have plenty of slashers I like, but they need to be good enough movies for me to actually enjoy them. Stuff like Friday the 13th The Final Chapter, My Bloody Valentine and the Burning are well made horror films, but then you have stuff like Sleepaway Camp and Pieces which I don’t really enjoy that much. But a lot of slasher fans love them despite acknowledging that they are bad movies.
I want to see this movie today and I was absolutely disappointed. Especially since we've had soooo many good horror movies within the last two years. Abigail, Saw X, Thanksgiving, and Skinamarink just to name a few.
ye
Feel like this is a cool change of pace for a movie coming out this year. people will def sleep on this movie :$
I LOVED THIS MOVIE!!!! 😱😱😱😱😱😱👏👏👏👏👏👏
Why is everybody mad. Johnny was just trying to stay in shape, and people just got in his way.😂😂😂😂
The slasher franchises that are considered so great always fall apart with the reveal: Michael Myers is evil because of an ancient Druid curse, Jason Vorhees is evil because he’s a parasitic worm. Even if the movie is boring, it’s refreshing to see a slasher depicted as nothing more than a living extension of the natural ecosystem.
Watched it last night. Not very good. Couple decent kill scenes but slow moving and zero acting. Many of the kills the victims just stood there and did nothing. Looked ridiculous.
This film was largely boring. Enjoyed when things were actually happening, but watching nothing happening, but walking for a good chunk of the time got boring so fast. So much of the walking could have been edited out in place of something else more interesting
Was excited to see this film, and was sorely disappointed. This is literally just a Jason movie with a pretentious indie arthouse style. Literally 90% of the movie is just seeing the killer walk through the woods. Films like this prove that just because it's "different" doesn't mean it's good.
100% agree
I really wanted to like this movie but it was too boring! Don’t get me wrong there was a lot of cool kills but that was it. Here’s the thing I really liked Zygote that was Chris Nash ABC’s of death segment I really loved it but this movie out 10 stars I can only give it 4 out of 10. Hopefully his next movie is going to be better.
Kills were brutal but the movie was so so. A ton of filler
Just saw it tonight. Its fun but gets slow at times.
Hold on, did this guy say that to be a love letter to the horror genre, the film had to subvert expectations?
The last time I heard that about subverting expectations in a movie, the film instead turned out to be hate mail to the fans, The Last Jedi.
When it comes to horror, I have simple tastes. No jump scares, no guns (except to off Zombies and werewolves), no swelling music, and corny overproduction, like those normie Conjuring movies.
I like slasher films. I want POV flix. I like simple, low-budget horror.
Haven't seen this movie but I'm going to do that right away.
I want scary movies, and knowing what will happen makes them less scary. Subverting expectations should be the norm in this genre, hence love letter. Also to call TLJ a hate letter is BS. I found Rise of Skywalker to be a bigger insult.
Also prefer overproduction to movies that feel fake due to the acting being terrible. And if it feels fake, it's not scary.
As if 99% of other slashers are any better or more interesting. What's the point of even even watching them? Simply watch a 5 minute kill compilation on youtube.
And with the good ones you don’t need a kill count to enjoy it.
I watched the movie last night. The movie could have been shorter for sure, but the kills were pretty awesome. Great practical effects.
At this point the only way to "subvert" expectations is to give people what they expect. Subversion is the new ultimate cliche.
Though I saw the movie earlier today and quickly realized that plenty of people are going to be put off by it, and call it slow and boring, primarily for a reason they might not even be fully conscious of... the near complete lack of music. Any music in there is minimal and diegetic. There is no soundtrack telling you how to feel or that things are getting tense. Mostly just the sounds of nature intentionally contrasting with what is going on in the scene.
Not really. If you structure a film to seem cliche it will not be surprising either. We still get bland and boring slashers and supernatural movies today, so I don't know why you would be surprised getting what you expect.
I disagree with you heavily. He seems to be stunted just like Jason and just like Michael. He is terrifying and he is tragic. Jason and Michael are terrifying and tragic.
I disagree with you. Don’t defend this movie it was terrible
@@coleyoung8232 I didn’t say it doesn’t have problems. I’m solely speaking about the “lack of personality” that was discussed
L take but that's ok I'm going to enjoy the movie :D
Like your stuff but couldn’t disagree more. It’s absolutely doing parody / homage with lines (and final plans) ripped from Jason 6. (Spoilers) The final girl deciding the plan is not going to save her and her doing the “un-horror” type of thing where everyone else is stuck in that classic old slasher troupe fest with their acting and dialog was a great statement on the genre. All the stories don’t matter, just the locket. Simple. I get that some would think it’s boring or whatever but you seem extra hard on something I feel as a fan did what it said it would do. Also you mention they rarely show the mask but they do several close ups throughout the last half . I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong.
I love this film. No review will not ever make me not watch this
I feel like this movie delivered on what the director and producers promised.
Loved it 😊
Jo blo neeeds new employees this guy is out
I loved it I don't know what the hell you are talking about. It's an indie/arthouse film so sorry it's not like everything else
This movie was slow, boring, predictable, and downright horrible. I was so disappointed.
I'm not convinced this dude even likes horror
SPOILERS AHEAD:
Johnny definitely showed personality with the toy car keychain scene, he's a big ass child. Also when he did his last kill in the movie, the dude was talking shit and lowkey jump scared him. As far as the story not being more in depth. Seriously, it didnt need to be. Not every horror movie has to be Hereditary or NOPE or any movie with all these layers to it. Its a simple story and thats not a bad thing. I appreciate him for his reviews for the most part, but cant agree with his 5/10 on this one. Its a intriguing approach on a genre of horror that hasnt had anything like this done before. I highly enjoyed the movie and would see it again.
I found the characters terrible and the Jason knockoff boring the kills were cool 5/10
NI had the same expectations. It let me down hard. It's so slow. So slow. Still I would want a sequel with better pacing. There is a horror Icon here but they gotta do a lot make him one for the generation. It's a shame they all can be Art The Clown.
terrible review, hand in your "credentials"
I completely disagree. It was awesome. Very original. It pays homage but also mocks the genre which is very shallow. The story is pretty much irrelevant for Friday the 13th after the first 2 films. It just becomes mindless killing.
This movie had genuine tension and provided a realistic portrayal of a slasher. No music. Just brutal kills. The walking wasn't overdone to me.
Probably 3 actual minutes of walking total.
Yeah, I went to an advanced preview showing of this on Wednesday and it was one of my most highly anticipated films for the year. While I did not hate it, I was extremely disappointed. There were some good things in this film, but not enough to merit me, loving it. It was quite a disappointment, but I still give it about a five or six out of 10. I didn’t hate it. But it left a lot to be desired in execution.
Exactly
Jo blow critic: "The film mostly follows the killer... He rises from his grave ect...That's really all it is... There's no deconstructing stereotypes or subverting expectations... we are simply following this man as he kills person after person..."
Well that sounds like a Jason pov movie I want to see. No one likes Jason type slashers because they are thought provoking. They just wanna see the slasher return from the grave and have some entertaining kills before he gets killed... again. Keep your deconstructing and subverting expectations for your master thesis to impress your liberal arts professor.
Some people don’t care about that stuff and want a good horror movie
@@thomasffrench3639 exactly that’s what I’m saying

@@thomasffrench3639 the trailer promotes a slasher movie where the camera stays with the undead slasher. It's implied heavily in the trailer this is gonna be like a Jason type slasher. And that's what I expect from this movie. Haven't seen it yet. Not saying it's good. But nothing in the trailer promised a deep thought provoking well written masterpiece.
@@eyeballtears I never said thought provoking, I said competent/good. You don’t need Oscar level writing for something to be good, or at least decent. I mean I can come up with a few slashers that have well written characters, I’m not asking for that much.

Saw this movie the other day and was definitely disappointed. I don’t understand the hype and great reviews. It had some things going for it but literally half the movie is the killer walking in the woods or a victim running in the woods. The characters sucked and the dialogue was worse. I like some of the kills, very gruesome. 8 ppl walked out by the end of the movie. Mostly because of those scenes but I’m sure also because it was long and bad.
Beautifully shot, fucking boring and pointless I just saw it. It's a close 2nd to Skinamirink for sheer boredom

I thought the new The Strangers movie was a disaster and a disappointment. This wasn't nearly as bad, but felt like an incomplete concept slapped together. The acting from the other Cast aside for the main character. That's the real slasher in all this. Yikes. Why write a script if it was going to be this boring 😅
Was the strangers movie good? I saw this and the watchers movie the other day and I thought in a violent nature was better. Little boring at times and looks lil fake during some kills but everything else was just crazy some parts had potential but eh its a horror slasher so wtvr ig
I've just returned from seeing this movie, and I share the narrator's opinion in the video. Without revealing too much, I think it's fair to issue a bit of a cautionary note. The film unfolds from John's viewpoint, and its distinctive feature is the absence of a musical score. This means you're essentially watching a nature hike that culminates in a murder. It's like a modern-day 'Friday the 13th.' Jason Voorhees may have originated in the late '70s and rose to fame in the '80s, but this film feels like a revival that was a long time coming. Should they continue the series, I hope they'll cut down on the amount of time we spend following this fiend as he prowls the forest for his next prey.
Didn’t live nor hate this movie, but this video’s such an L take lol I’d watch this again I’m looking forward for when it hits shudder.
Really tried to like it
I just watched it and I think 5/10 is more than fair. Outside of a couple of good kills there's really nothing worth watching it for. I found it very boring. The last 20 minutes are totally pointless, just switch it off there's nothing to see.
Last 10 minutes were garbage.
I immediately thought of A Ghost Story. Which is basically a movie about a guy covered in a white sheet standing around while time passes around him
It was a was of time! 🤦 All that walking around smh they could of made his character better half of the movie was of him walking doing stupid ish then kills someone smh some kills was ok but my gosh it could of been more action and character development
Sorry it wasn't the magnum opus that The Strangers Chapter 1 managed to be.
this movie was boring as shit but the kills made up for it
extremely mean and gross. ill give it that.
