I'm a veteran of the USAF (1980-1984), and I applaud this video. In my experience, the things you've said are correct. While stationed in Germany (West Germany at the time), some of my buddies and I would make weekend road trips to Amsterdam to smoke hash & weed about twice a year. I once got a surprise urine test on a Wednesday after one of these trips, but it still came back clean & nothing was said. I knew one guy in Germany who took LSD regularly but eschewed weed & hash. He said the acid was a much better high, and it could only be detected via spinal tap. At least that's what he said. Plus, the military tacitly promotes the use of alcohol by urging the troops to patronize the on-base enlisted & NCO clubs. While I was in, they also had no restrictions on us possessing all types of booze in our rooms. So though they're officially anti-drug, they're actually anti some drugs (narcotics, weed, hallucinogens, nicotine, etc.) while pro alcohol, which is itself a drug.
Thanks for your service sir. I've always wanted to join the military, but I already have C-PTSD. Would they still expect me if I have mental and a physical disability? Or would they say no? Just curious.
@@_keelo_the_bearded_dragon_5719 To the best of my knowledge, they probably wouldn't take you if you had a documented history of either of those. However, if they're undocumented, the recruiter didn't ask you about them, and you were able to hide them, you might be able to get in. There is always the chance of being found out about either later. Personally, I'd not risk it since anything like that would be prosecutable under federal laws/UCMJ (Military Law). Those penalties can be very extreme depending who's prosecuting.

@@zzodysseuszz Each of those chemicals can affect individuals in different ways. They can be great for many people. Not for everyone. But for sure, they all need more research. For me, I have found great results with some hallucinogenics, and also some dissociative drugs. Post trauma therapeutics. The biggest issue right now, is that they have been outlawed for so long that we are way behind in studying them. But I am grateful that at least now, there has been a start to giving permission to study them.
My father was a Warsaw Pact paratrooper/special ops recon operator in early 80s. Benzedrine was administered before training and combat missions. It was not enough to make the team euphoric, but enabled them to operate for a few days without sleep and they were able to maintain constant focus on their goals.

After reading Donald Burgett’s excellent book “Currahee”, I was curious about the contents of the “airsickness pills” American paratroopers were given before and during the flight to Normandy. Burgett said they made them feel sleepy and dreamy and calm. Turns out that besides actual airsickness meds, they were mostly the barbiturate amobarbital, so they were basically low-level “red freaks” when they dropped into France.
As someone who has struggled with depression, PTSD, debilitating anxiety and agoraphobia and also who hasn't had a lot of success with current pharmaceutical options...yeah, I reeeally can't wait for these studies to bring new medicine into the mainstream. It's very much needed.
I can't find a source anywhere for any good psychedelics in my area, I suffer some pretty bad depression and i got a chance to try K and man it was a miracle substance, I felt free, the only high or euphoria was from the relief of my vices being released, that's exactly what it did
Fun fact: I've alternated my narcolepsy meds for almost 2 decades now (to reduce tolerance issues), one of them being Provigil (modifinil), which was heavily used in WWII by the Axis to keep troops awake and "functional."
I'm pretty sure you meant regular old amphetamine. Modafinil wasn't developed until the 1970s, and wasn't prescribed until the mid-90s. Amphetamines OTOH date back to the late 19th century.
My father was sent to Vietnam in '69. He was being really weird and spacy in '76. He went to a doctor who said from his brain scans he was having an LSD flashback. He was 38 when he was in Vietnam and mature enough to not "drop acid" on the battlefield. We always wondered if he was part of a USMC experiment.
Don’t mean to discredit your entire story, but “flashbacks” like that don’t really exist, and it’s not something that would be diagnosed on a brain scan
@@Slowp0w in which case they'd (hopefully) diagnose the condition and proceed accordingly. This flashback myth is just that. I knew a guy who worked on an amputee floor at a military hospital and they would routinely give solders "medical" LSD to help with phantom limb pain. The guy mentioned it was super weird watching these soldiers missing limbs tripping thinking they're limbs were still there. Apparently it actually helped them accept the loss.
Yeah lsd is a schedule 1 narcotic there is no medical lsd even in the military. More than likely they gave them ketamine which gets used very often and can make people hallucinate and trip.
I'm not a medically trained and just repeating what he told me. It's possible that's what he was talking about but I remember him saying that it wasn't legal to give out at civilian hospitals. He said there's a lot that the military hospitals can get away with since they don't have to follow the same rules as civilian hospitals.
Thanks Joe~this was an important video subject. As always, your presentation was very informative.. After having used the military service members as living lab experiments, the government of this country owes military veterans sooooo much more than they have been given. I shudder to think of the experiments that are being or have been performed on them that we haven't found out about yet..
I have an uncle with Osteoporosis and other health conditions that found out his father was one of many Navy men who were tied to a boat near a Nuclear test to see what would happen. He only found this out when his wife (not him) received a letter from the military asking if he had certain conditions.
I’m an Iraq war veteran with severe PTSD. I don’t drink, I don’t smoke and I never did drugs. But psilocybin (and later EMDR) did more for me in a few sessions than all the therapy and support groups ever did. I hope this becomes a sanctioned treatment because it saved my life too
Incredibly brilliant and ballsy, Joe. Your human relevance has just gone up an order of magnitude. The drug war is being fought against humanity, not for it. Free people, don't jail them.
Leaving a comment to show the algorithm my engagement. I appreciate that Joe didn't shy away from talking about critical topics in spite of the holiday. Keep up the good work!
Beautifully factual, up to date, and open-minded analysis of all these substances, but especially psychedelics deserve both scientific and ethnographical attention. You're super, Joe!
I'd really love to see a dedicated video on the experimental PTSD treatments currently being worked on. Apparently, micro-dosing psychedelics during therapy is extremely promising. - And/or a video which lays out the history of the VA screwing over us vets. Which continues to be a problem to this day. Albeit with improvements since I got out.
Great idea. I’d like to see that one too. I have ptsd and after being prescribed every pill known that made things worse. Then I got ketamine therapy. It saved my life.
Thank you both for your service, as we are seeing with recent pLandemics, the "system" rewards drug companies and their brainwashed dealers (aka MD's) Pfiser can't charge the VA $7.50 per dose of magic-mushrooms, b/c ppl know they grow for free in cow-s__t. The Veteran's Admin "didn't" study cannabis, or the endo-cannabinoid system post Vietnam? WHY THE F____ NOT??? (Ketamine may HAVE saved your life, but how many lives has cannabis saved?) As a former SOC-M "doc", maybe it's not the compound that helps, but rather our belief in that compound? Happy Independence Day and MUCH respect! TY!
I'll "third" that request!! I know I have PTSD, but the VA says I don't, just depression and anxiety issues. The review was done via video conference by a PA. Sad state of affairs the VA is in. 😔
Ketamine is definitely getting a lot of attention these days for this sort of thing. MDMA seems to float in and out of favor in experimental circles but never really seems to break out into regular use. I'd recommend looking up Alexander and Ann Shulgin, as they were pretty much the foremost pioneers in the realm of psychedelic therapies going back as far as the late 70's. In fact, Alexander Shulgin is pretty much responsible for synthesizing the majority of the 2C* family of drugs like 2CB. Him and Ann wrote a pair of books going into great detail about the effects and potential applications for a wide variety of drugs in the phenethylamine and tryptamine classes, PiHKAL and TiHKAL. He also just happened to invent the world's first biodegradable pesticide, Zectran. Old dude put in work.
I recommend "The Immortality Key" by Brian Muraresku for anyone more interested in how drugs may have been used in history. It was a huge perspective shift for how I viewed our ancient ancestors and how our moral judgment on psychopharmaceuticals is a very recent Western trend. It made me think "witches" may have been the earliest psychiatrists.
I never new my grandfather because of the military LSD testing on soldiers. He joined as a perfectly functional person, got put through some experiments (massive doses and obstacle courses, etc), came back messed up in the head and violent, got hospitalized and eventually lobotomized, then died. He never even got to meet me as a baby I don't think, if he did it was only once when I was newborn then he died shortly after. I'm not sure, but that's what I was told by my mom and grandma.
This video was AMAZING. So educational and entertaining. You’re great at what you do, thank you for this content! I have a fondness for psychedelics and I’m glad people can open their mind to using it. It does have healing properties as well as many more benefits 💖

Hi Joe. I got a question completely unrelated to the video but wasn't sure where to post it, so here goes. If i was to go back in time, abduct a newborn baby, bring it back to today and raise it like a normal child, how far back could I go so that the baby would grow up to be 100% undistinguishable, both physically and mentally, from today's humans? Not sure if you've already done a video on this in the past. Thanks and keep up the amazing work.
Thank you for sharing this. I knew about a few of the drug tests by the military, but wow, so many more that I had not heard of. Again, thank you. Isn’t it ironic that LSD was first a Curiosity, then studied as a weapon, then recreational, now a possible cure for what war and modern life caused. Maybe the hippies were right all along. Personal note, I’ve been micro dosing shrooms to help deal with cancer. My outlook on life is much improved. Keep it up Joe, love your posts.
Thanks for bringing to everyone's attention the flippant attitude towards testing on soldiers. I was in the gulf war. One night our platoon leader walked around handing out pills from a bottle. He was ordered to hand them out, we were ordered to take them. He didn't even know what it was. I was raised to trust our leaders (I know, naive), but for some reason alarm bells went off in my head. When the platoon leader looked away, I chucked mine over my shoulder. That night, half the company was violently ill. To this day, I wonder how much of Gulf war syndrome was caused by that pill. Ross Perot funded a study that (supposedly) found evidence that it was caused by those pills, but that study was forgotten. People should be going to prison for that crap.
in 2021 the death rate of the usa not related to covid has gone up 40%. the life insurance companies have all had to pay out way more for death claims of people 18 -65 . so the inference is that the covid vaccine was heavily distributed and has caused way more deaths from "other causes" . i have had 3 shots and i got covid 3 weeks after the second. 1 week into covid i had muscle spasms in my abdomen. and now since then i have had all my muscles breaking down and no test can explain it.i heard some people who only got the vaccine have had terrible muscle spasms. so is it long covid or the vaccine?
While the intro was brilliant, I think it's great that you're bringing into focus how the government who banks votes and what not in the name of the millitary care so little about their well being.
From my time in the military all i can say is this.(it's can be a good sometimes) (BUT) If given the chance get out early they most would. Its full of people who cheat on there husbands and wifes. Most have alcohol problems, just being apart of the military culture can cause high levels of depression and stress. They push that just keep going even if your breaking mentally and physically mentality and when they do break they are called weak. Then they love talk about how they want to help suicidal soilders but then when they come out about it they get shunned or looked like they are crazy. They also love to try to help people find the Christian god. Its toxic and I dont recommend joining ever.

If you're reading this and aren't already aware of him, you should lookup Jay Foreman on RUclips. I've determined that he's basically British Joe Scott. Anyways I just discovered Joe in 2023 and discovered Jay in probably 2019, and I think I like Joe so much because again, he's American Jay Foreman.
My grandfather was a B-17 tailgunner. A young and hard-charging top basketball player before that. Survived, became very successful. Fulfilled the common goal of buying a new Cadillac at least every year till he passed away in the mid 90s. Chronic alcoholic until about 1977. Absolutely no patience for any sign of emotion in anybody. I suppose Benzidene and drinking culture in England set the stage for that. And terror, deprivation, loss, survivor's guilt, etc. I really love him and miss him though. Had a very real conversation with him at 19. Our last. He'd just been diagnosed with cancer and lived on the opposite side of USA from me.
6:32 there’s a documented case of datura used for poisoning a well during a siege in England, I don’t have more details on hand but nightshades were used for that throughout history

Seeing as I am Clinical Pharmacist, a veteran and I currently work for the VA, I wanted to share something regarding this "current age" of drugs in the military, specifically around PTSD treatments and psychedelics and or marijuana. There are many people who swear by there effectiveness as treatment for PTSD and I would never stand in the way when it comes to treatment, except many people misunderstand the underlying development of PTSD itself. PTSD is extremely specific to the individual and the manner in which medications/drugs work in the body is also highly specific. For every anecdotal story of a person whose PTSD was successfully treated by a psychedelic or a certain strain of marijuana, I have also read where those medications have made the PTSD much much worse, in equal numbers. The issue is that we have not developed the technology yet for personalized medications and until we do, I don't think we will see a medication that could actively treat all forms of PTSD without making other peoples symptoms worse.
Battlefield trauma patients are sometimes medicated with ketamine instead of morphine. Ketamine doesn't suppress breathing and heart rate the way that morphine does. I've heard that the psychoactive component is useful in combating the psychological effects of being wounded also.

Hawkeye: Easy, Father. Tell me, who goes to Hell?
Father Mulcahy: Um, sinners, I believe.
Hawkeye: Exactly. There are no innocent bystanders in Hell, but war is chock full of them - little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for a few of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander.
M.A.S.H. could get very dark, but also brutally honest.
Yeah, Alan Alda sometimes annoys the piss out of me, but he and the scriptwriters nailed that one perfectly.
Where is that from?

The "is love just a drug" really needed the Rick and Morty clip about it hitting hard then slowly fading lol
“Glad you asked. Love is a very beautiful, very intense feeling for a startlingly short period of time. Before long you realize love just gets in the way of the important things in life, like going to sleep, or being left alone. That’s when love starts fading, and lies kick in.”
Love your show man! I just retired from the service last year and this topic has always been something I’ve wanted to shed light on! I was shocked when I first deployed and found out there are more drugs in the military than in my home town! Glad you are bringing it up and hopefully more people will speak up about it as it has caused so much harm to service members! Love ❤️ peace ☮️ and taco 🌮 grease🤌🏾
You know its gonna be good when Joe talks to himself for the intro :D
@@bobbyjackson4452 Thanks for telling me, cause C-PTSD is in my documents as well as all my trauma and suicidal history. So yeah, I agree with that. If the time were to come, could they draft someone like me?
your intros have gotten so good. great job with all your videos! this channel is awesome
I do really like when the development team gets back together, nice to see how friendly they are to each other.
Haven’t even watched the video but “Aim High” is an incredible stroke of wordplay for the subject at hand, had to come here to say that. Like god, how efficient. It’s like a triple entendre

You talking about mushrooms? Well so long as it doesn’t have the same problems as acid or dmt then I got no problems.
@@zzodysseuszz acid is a beautiful tool equal to mushrooms , especially micro doses
I heard of a doctor in South America doing a research study using micro doses of LSD and Shrooms to help addicts of heavy chemicals get off the habit smoother, or manage the edge in the first year. Thus far results look good. I think you're proof that the concept works.
Congrats on kicking the poison. #FuckHeroin
It was not enough to make the team euphoric, but enabled them to operate for a few days without sleep and they were able to maintain constant focus on their goals.

thanks for your service
After reading Donald Burgett’s excellent book “Currahee”, I was curious about the contents of the “airsickness pills” American paratroopers were given before and during the flight to Normandy. Burgett said they made them feel sleepy and dreamy and calm. Turns out that besides actual airsickness meds, they were mostly the barbiturate amobarbital, so they were basically low-level “red freaks”
when they dropped into France.
As someone who has struggled with depression, PTSD, debilitating anxiety and agoraphobia and also who hasn't had a lot of success with current pharmaceutical options...yeah, I reeeally can't wait for these studies to bring new medicine into the mainstream. It's very much needed.
you know when a video answers a much needed question I've had for SO LONG!
I can't find a source anywhere for any good psychedelics in my area, I suffer some pretty bad depression and i got a chance to try K and man it was a miracle substance, I felt free, the only high or euphoria was from the relief of my vices being released, that's exactly what it did
3:24 Native Hungarian here... Kudos for trying to pronounce Székesfehérvár correctly. That was pretty close to perfect. Well done. :)
I’m absolutely dying at a midroll ad popping up directly after you said “thankfully we have a sponsor” after saying the video would be demonetized ☠️
Thanks for being you Joe. Never stop.
MKultra
They can’t diagnose an “LSD flashback” from a 70s brain scan. Any doctor who would make that diagnosis in someone who had never taken acid is a quack.
Don’t mean to discredit your entire story, but “flashbacks” like that don’t really exist, and it’s not something that would be diagnosed on a brain scan
The acid might have triggered a latent psychological condition
@@Slowp0w in which case they'd (hopefully) diagnose the condition and proceed accordingly. This flashback myth is just that. I can see how it sounds believable to the inexperienced or those who have little education on the subject, but it's just an old myth, perpetuated by misguided drug war propaganda and schoolyard chatter.
Holy heck dude.....you never cease to amaze me and find something that i haven't heard of before. Never knew about all of these "agent BZ" tests. WOW!! Keep it up! THANK YOU!
That intro 😂😂😂. I just love you and your show; the topics, the humor, the delivery, all of it. Thank you for always delivering interesting, educational content in the most entertaining of ways!
I love how original and clever the segments in your videos are. I wish you would do more of them, and longer.
I’d love to see the edit of Joe saying “Szekesfehervar” and getting it right. I wonder how many tries that took.
I always love your multiple characters segments Cap'n Scott!
Oh my god, I can _just_ kind of imagine that, and it's absolutely ridiculous. I could also imagine that helping them, tho, too.
I'm not a medically trained and just repeating what he told me. It's possible that's what he was talking about but I remember him saying that it wasn't legal to give out at civilian hospitals. He said there's a lot that the military hospitals can get away with since they don't have to follow the same rules as civilian hospitals.
@@cottagehunter Military in a nutshell, eh?
I was so happy when you announced the sponsor. Talking about getting sponsors then announcing it was really satisfying.
I hope this becomes a sanctioned treatment because it saved my life too
Mushrooms are our ancient healers.
Human plant symbiosis on another level.
As a South African, I died hearing you butcher "dagga" and "intelezi."

Love you Joe
“Went down to see my VA man, he say son don’t you understand…”
the sponsor bit at the beginning made my day... good little chuckle there, well done Joe.
Thanks! Chasing the scream by Johan (can't remember his last name) great book on the war on drugs
How do we see if a video has been demonetized?
I pay for RUclips and watch this channel, give this man money.
Why is it that whenever we go into Joe's clone world.... It feels like it could so easily be Rimmerworld
That was a very subtle and smooth sponsor ad. Thanks. It's those small things that make you stand out. :)

Need a lot more of these interesting investigations. The problem being that the research itself is limited by the lack of information publicly available.
One of my favorite channels on yt
Brilliant video Joe!
Great video, thoughtful and well researched
Battlefield trauma patients are sometimes medicated with ketamine instead of morphine. Ketamine doesn't suppress breathing and heart rate the way that morphine does. I've heard that the psychoactive component is useful in combating the psychological effects of being wounded also.
