what most of these guys don't know is that there was a tube amp on most of pantera's recordings.
I'm not sure if you want to get into something a little less famous, but a guy called Sam Wesphalen did covers of Metal with only an acoustic guitar played in precision guitar style.

Pantera's legend guitarist, Dimebag Darrell, met his idol Eddie Van Halen just a few weeks before Dimebag was murdered, and the two bonded so much in that short meeting that at Dimebag's funeral, Eddie buried one his most famous guitars, (the yellow and black one he held on the back of the Van Halen II album) with Dimebag.
The reason for that is that Dime was trying to buy one of Eddie's guitars but he said let's just make a special one together. Eddie asks so just like Red, White and Black strips? "No, Darrell always said that the yellow and black was your toughest guitar.’ So when he was buried Eddie said that "A real one" needed the real one.

One of my faves
They were a glam metal band in the 80s. They essentially ignore those albums and call Cowboys From Hell their 'first' album. Which definitely is a pioneering era for groove metal
Cowboys was their first album on a major record label. Their earlier stuff was independently produced and released, so even for legal reasons the big record labels might not be able to release them. I think they just decided they got this new awesome singer with a new style, and it's not worth drudging up that old stuff. You can find the first 4 albums as bootlegs on Ebay. The original producer (their dad lol) is happy to see those still in circulation. He even bought himself copies and commented how great they sound (a remastered issue I believe)
Phil’s first album with them was Power Metal. There are still some hints of the 80’s Metal style on Cowboys from Hell.

Actually, Dime used solid state amps, no tubes. He really sculpted his sound with them, used an MXR graphic EQ in front.

Was going to comment this. Geebz, dimebag put Randall amps on the map which are solid state amps, no tubes. Also well known for scooping his mids in the vain of metallica and other thrash bands
Incredible isnt it, because you can get that sound from a 5150 and Dime did it with a Randall solid state.
This album was solid state and some after, though if my memory serves me correctly it was tube on Great Southern Trendkill, and beyond. I believe Randall made it special for him.

Fun Fact about Dime's Guitar tone: For most of his career it was all solid state amps and power amps. I think it's the same in studio they hardly ever used tube amps. It wasn't until after PanterA with Krank amps that is when Dime had tube style amps.

Your comment about the drums is spot on. So happy to hear someone say it! I LOVE Dime like everyone does but people don't often comment how Vin's drums made Dime's riffs even better. They were a machine for real. Knew each other like only brothers could and never would sound the same without each other.

Good old Pantera. Never disappoints! Since you touched upon the influence they had on metal in general it might be fun to give a listen to something like "Entombed - Left Hand Path". Released the same year, totally different direction, but also very influential.

Phil, the vocalist, has been in a few "supergroups", one of which is called Down. Highly recommended. A superb southern sludge band.

Dimebag’s high end sizzle came from a lack of tubes. He was using solid state Randall Amp heads, so that’s purely tone from transistors and whatever distortion pedal Dime was using. Dime liked solid state amps because everyone else was playing fickle tube amps and he liked reliability on the road because he didn’t have to worry about getting his shit stolen or blowing up and losing his signature sound because tubes died. He also said that he felt like tubes had a slower response and his solid state amps were much faster to respond and that’s how he was able to play so fast with so much distortion without having it sound like garbled mess. Solid state amps were also way louder back the day.

@@PetParadiseVB I can play it closely at slower speeds. It's easier for my left hand to play it at the nut in a box but right hand and left hand together is easier staying on the low E string and moving up and down the neck, except that turns super sloppy when I do it.
That makes sense. There is a lot of Dimebags work that I’ve always thought would sound extremely bluesy if the amps weren’t cranked up.

100% agree with your comments at the end about the importance of dynamics and contrast in a song. Pantera were masters of changing up their songs and bringing in different flavours. It's one of the things that keeps me listening to them on a regular basis 27 years after being introduced to them, where other bands I like dont get as much air time because my ears get tired of the sameness across the portfolio.
I will never forget the last time I seen Pantera, standing right in front of Dime was something to behold! RIP

This was the first album on which they changed their sound significantly. After this one came "Vulgar Display of Power", and on this one, every single song is a must. You could check out "Mouth for War", "Walk" or "This Love" to get a sense of it.
When I got a CD player for Christmas they gave me Cowboys From Hell.
I was a bit put off at first because I had only heard later songs at the time, but the album's still great.
The first song by Pantera I heard was mouth for war. Another important part in my life.
This song... and actually the entire album, was on repeat often for most of my teenage years through my early twenties. This album helped me through some of the toughest times in my life. It was all about the sound... every bit of it, and the feelings it produced deep down in my soul. If I was having a bad day, I could turn this on and crank it up and just get lost in the music. RIP Dime and Vinnie!

i was lucky enough to get to see these guys live in concert more than once. they were truly something special. when i was a teenager surfing cocoa beach Pantera was often the soundtrack in my head while i was paddling out. here it is all these years later and Pantera is still a big part of my playlist.

The video of this tune live in Moscow might be my most-watched RUclips clip ever, Dimebag was a god-like shredding riff monster (RIP) while Vulgar Display still blows my mind and sounds as fresh as ever nearly 30 years later. @@hoopsmccann639 It’s not that hard. Listen carefully and you’ll hear it. In fact in all songs you can hear the bass, however it is usually felt more than heard. The bass makes the music sound full. Take out the bass and the composition sounds a lot different. It also depends how you’re listening to the music (what kind of headphones, etc do you use). I can hear bass in nearly every song, but that’s because I have ears ‘trained’ to do so, and I use good headphones. Hearing bass in any recording is not in fact too difficult. Sometimes it is just hard because the bass is turned down slightly. Hearing bass requires ear training and strictly paying attention to it. Bass can also have different types of sounds in the mix. Sometimes it is as we all associate bass with, and sometimes it is a sort of a clicking sound.

At this stage and for most of Pantera's run, Dime was running solid state amps (Randall RG100ES) and a Furman PQ-3 rack eq. The EQs changed over the years but the RG100 & PQ-3 was the original classic combination. Also downtuned a half-step and then some (landing somewhere between Eb and D). He later went to Randall Warheads and then Krank (tube) amps. His razor-sharp tones are so beautiful.

Dimebag’s CFH tone consisted of a L500xl pickup, MXR 6 band eq, furman parametric eq, noise gate, into a solid state Randall RG100es at max gain, and in the loop was the MXR flanger doubler with Jaguar speakers in the speaker cabinet.

Hey, man! Love your breakdowns of some of my favorite tracks and will buy you a cup soon! Not meant to roast, but more to inform. So, Dime only used tube amps towards the later end of his journey with Pantera and Damageplan in finding the company Krank. Not sure if the Warhead from Randall has tubes, but everything in the formative years of Pantera was done on solid-state, believe it or not. It's just the combination of tools delivering such a serious tone. Much love and thanks for your sharing as well as the opportunity to share. Rock on!

One time in 1998 I sold Dimebag Darrell a salted pretzel with marinara sauce at the pretzel place I worked for in the Park's Mall in Arlington, TX. That was the greatest moment for teenage me ever. He showed me a poster of himself he bought at Spencer’s.

I worked in Dallas selling music instruments in the early 90's and the store had a ton of the vinyls of those 4 albums. I was never witness to anyone buying one.

Pantera were formed in the 80's, they didn't have any major releases in that decade, only independent. Their major label debut was 1990 Cowboys from Hell, they got some national radio play but the 2nd major release Vulgar Display of Power was when they got "BIG", with MTV playing vids for Walk and This Love, then they had the Billboard #1 metal album in 1995 with the release of Far Beyond Driven.
Please do more, I'd suggest Primal Concrete Sledge, Cemetery Gates, Fucking Hostile, Mouth for War, WALK(a MUST listen if you wanna know what "the Pantera sound" is!), A New Level, Becoming, I'm Broken, 5 Minutes Alone, Slaughtered, Shedding Skin, Use My Third Arm, Planet Caravan, War Nerve, 10's, Flood, The Underground in America, Sandblasted Skin, Hellbound, Goddamn Electric, Yesterday Don't Mean Shit, You've Got To Belong To It, Revolution Is My Name, We'll Grind That Axe For A Long Time, I'll Cast A Shadow.
There are many more good songs from Pantera including some covers. Like Pantera's version of Black Sabbath's Planet Caravan was probably in my top 2 or 3 favorites covers by any musicians.
The Pantera version of that song brings up emotion in me because it was played at my cousin's funeral after he died in a motorcycle crash in '04, a few days before his 33rd birthday, also like a week after my b-day. We were pretty close, actually he played bass with my old band and was the person who got me into metal music way way back in the day.

Dimebag was murdered onstage, Vinney Paul WATCHED his brother get shot down.
That all happened on December 8th 2004(while their band Damage Plan was playing a show!), the last time I had talked with my cousin Dave was right after that, on the phone talking to him about Dimebag's death. That was a rough month for me, and the months to follow lead me into dark times in my life.
Cemetery gates is a track you should check out. As far as Dimes gear goes, I read in a guitar mag many years ago that when he was a teen he used to enter guitar contests in the Dallas area where he was from. He won almost all of them and ended up with a solid state Randall stack and a Dean ML guitar. Those pieces of gear ended up being his primary setup for most of his Pantera recording/live career

Adding a little more to the rig info: Dimebag used an extremely aggressive noise gate to get that chunk-chunk-chunk sound. His moddded guitar had very high-gain Bill Lawrence pickups which work well with a noise gate that harsh. If I recall correctly, he EQ'd the sound going _into_ as well as _out_ of the amp (in the FX loop) with Furman rack EQs. As mentioned before the heads were Randall Warhead solid-state amps.
