My great grandma in New Orleans made watermelon preserves sweet and a little spicy. We ate it with chicken and pork as a condiment...not on bread. Sweet tart goes well with poultry and pork.

Daddy was the family pickler he liked it chunky. He must have spent a lot of time in the kitchen with his grandmother back in New Mexico. Wished I had asked him more questions when he was alive, and we would sit at the kitchen table at 5 a.m. just he and I everybody else was still asleep.

I've never seen this for sale over this way, but it looks like a fun thing to make. I did make apple jelly just once (years ago when the children were small), It was quite the process, with straining the pulp through the jelly bag overnight etc..but oh my the flavour was so good. It's interesting that this recipe resembles that or even apricot !! :) I liked hearing your new clock too ! but especially just watching and listening to your peaceful videos. Blessings to you sweet friend x

My husband brought home two smallish watermelons. I was determined not to throw away the rind so I started looking up recipes after we got the rind cut up and put in bowls in the refrigerator. I remember an "adopted" aunt making these when I was a kid and they were so good. I've only made them once, but it was so long ago I don't know where the recipe is. I knew you would have a good one. I'm looking forward to treating my family!

OK, I made a larger, second batch, yielded 7 half-pints. I used a whole watermelon this time. For 12 cups diced rinds, I used 5 3/4 cups sugar, and the juice of a whole lemon. With my first batch, I forgot to add the cinnamon but I liked it really well. For this batch I used the 1 teaspoon cinnamon it calls for but I think I may cut it back to 1/2 teaspoon. Just a personal preference. And I used the candy thermometer on the pot as it was cooking down, took it to 220° and it is perfect! I have to say thank you for this recipe, I have had the most fun with it as you can imagine, making two batches inside of three days.

I’ve never had nor heard of watermelon rind preserves. My granny made watermelon rind pickles, which I love. It’s hard to get decent rinds to make those with now. Watermelons use to have a thicker rind, so it was easy to get thick enough pieces for the pickles. The preserves looked good.

My Mom made Watermelon Rind Pickles .. she used alum and cut them into strips but the liquid set up like what your's looks like while you were canning ... and as you said they were so sweet BUT .. that watermelon rind was so crisp, they snapped when you bit them. The absolute best addition to chicken salad and ham salad between the texture/sweet but tartness. Have mercy I wish I had about a dozen jars. Thanks for the memories.

My great-grandmother is who got me hooked on wm rind preserves. When she passed away I thought that was it, That I'd never have them again. Until many years later talking to my grandmother about them. She surprised me with a jar and, boy howdy, they were just like I remembered. The one and only thing she would ever tell me about how to make the preserves was to make sure to get all the pink off as well as the rind. I guess that makes sense because her and her mother's liquids were always clear. Looking forward to trying your recipe.

Hello Whippoorwill. I just found your channel today. Thanks a million for this recipe. I just finished using it to make a batch of Watermelon Rind Preserves. I loved your idea of using the immersion blender -- which I definitely did. I haven't tasted it yet -- but my whole house smells fantastic! I was all out of lemon, but I had some fresh cherries -- and I tossed just four into the pot after it had simmered for about an hour -- and crushed them with a spoon after they had cooked for a while. (Also removed the pits then, of course -- lol.) I was very, very happy with how much color the cherries added. I don't know how prices are in your neck of the woods -- but up here in Pennsylvania -- the cost of groceries has risen considerably. Your super recipe enabled me to use the rind of a small watermelon (which I would have thrown out) and some sugar and make about two pints of jam! So -- thank you again. JV

My grandmother was from Missouri, east of Kansas City (I am a couple of years older than you, from what I can tell from your videos). She and I loved (Loved!) the chunky watermelon rind. I sometimes find it in the supermarket. It was green, whereas yours is more red. Yours looks lovely. Thanks for the memories. By the way, the local supermarket (Santa Fe, NM) had only one package of Ball quart jars yesterday (the Hatch green chiles have just arrived from the fields), and the steam and water canner apparatus is sold out everywhere online. Never heard of preserves, but I have heard of pickled rinds, just never done them myself. I like to eat the rind because it tastes like cucumber, so I bet it would make a great sweet pickle pickled rind recipe! Lol. I had planned on trying it this year but we haven't even bought a watermelon yet believe it or not! I gave my mother in law 4 plants so we are waiting on hers to ripen!

Thanks for another recipe. I have spent time today watching your blogs I’ve wrote down about 4. I have 29 blooms in my watermelon vines and about the same on the cantaloupe. I only planted 3 seeds in each hill . I didn’t think they would produce that much. The place I live was a cornfield back in the day. When I tilled it this spring , the soil was like black gold lots of worms. I used no fertilizer. Where there’s a will there’s a way I will get all this abundance that I have been blessed with preserved. Wish me luck

    Thank you ❤️
I have plenty of rine in the Ziploc. Tomorrow I add the sugar and rum 🙂😉. Then in goes all of it together, immersion cooking at its finest. Experiment underway. :)
The watermelons 🍉 we're picked from my Secret Garden a week apart. Stored the rind in the fridge. And now with the third watermelon being cut tomorrow 😹😊. I'm ready for my first place ribbon in the rind competition. :)
    I hope.

My family never made anything with the rinds, and they grew them for market! I do know that the best watermelons I ever ate were grown by a little old man just outside of Evening Shade. He said he'd quit growing them when he got one that weighed as much as he did. He would pick all the little ones off the vine, leaving only one or two to grow. He also would wrap sugar water soaked rags around the vine. I don't know if it helped them grow, or helped sweeten his crop, but I do know they were DELICIOUS! I think I was 10 or 12 the last time I saw him, and that was well over 50 years ago.
We still have pictures of my dad and uncle and the gentleman, sorry I don't remember his name, standing or squatting beside some humongous melons. You're bringing back some good memories.

Have had the watermelon rind pickle, It was greenish and tangy. As an Aussie I was not sure what it would taste like. But, I enjoyed it very much. Now I will have to make the preserve as it looks great too. Thanks Lori.

This is my favorite preserve. I make it & pickles every year when I get a watermelon with decent rind on it. The pickles are good to use in homemade tartar sauce.

Thank you for sharing this video! When I was a kid, my neighbor made watermelon pickles out of the rind. I tried making them a few years ago, but they didn't taste or look like hers. I've noticed the watermelon rind isn't thick as it used to be. My mom has bought a few watermelon this year, but the rind was too thin for pickles. If she gets another, I will try your preserves recipe.
