KISS without makeup is from 83 - 96, so not too early, as their first album was released in 73 if I'm not mistaken. This is Eric Carr on drums, who passed away in 1991. Bruce Kulick is on lead guitar here, and he was with them from 84 - 96. They have so many good hits. I would also recommend, "Let's Put the X in Sex", "Shout It Out Loud", "Tears Are Falling", "Reason to Live", Crazy Nights", "Turn on the Night", "I Was Made For Lovin You", "Unholy", "Domino". They have so many good songs.

Suggestions:." I Still Love You ' UNPLUGGED! ( amazing). "SHE" live 1975. A MIDNIGHT SPECIAL!! ,,,,, love ya!

Gene has had all kind of basses and brands. His 2 most famous/popular are the axe and then the Punisher bass (designed by Gene himself). So even when he had the those, he has altered what instrument he's been playing now and then. For different reasons, sponsor deals, personal interests, etc. I love those 2 iconic basses, but my third and probably top pick is his Gibson Ripper basses he played early career

He certainly was throughout most of the 80s. Especially when you take into account that Gene was constantly off on movie projects and side projects, so he wasn't making many contributions on the creative side. They'll never admit how close the band came to breaking up, but it got to a breaking point for Paul where he finally got Gene in a room and started ripping him. But he was pretty much doing everything for the band back then. Animalize, Asylum and Crazy Nights just ooze Paul Stanley.

Jay, on your wondering if this was a younger version of KISS, it's more middle career. The non-makeup songs are easy to identify. They formed in 1973, in 1983 the makeup came off, in 1996 the makeup (and the original band members) came back. Ace and Peter left again after a few years, but the makeup stayed. So any video you see without makeup is going to fall into that 13 year window in the middle of their career. Gene uses many bass guitars, sometimes it's the axe, many times something else. I tend to like the 80's version of KISS the most, but for some old school KISS, you really should check out a song that is all about Gene, "God of Thunder." You really need to check out one of the live performances of that song. It's one that you'll see at any KISS concert, and a lot of fun

Their drummer at this time(around 1985 or 86) was and last stretch of Eric Carr's tenure as Kiss drummer - the 2nd of 3. He was soon to visit the great gig in the sky. They only wore their makeup from their inception through 1983 and then again from 1989 to modern day - essentially their entire careers except for 6-7 years. Until they took the makeup off, no one except those close to them and their entourage and business people had any idea of what they looked like without their makeup because Kiss demanded enough respect even in the beginning(1973) that reporters and anyone with a camera to NOT point it at them if their makeup wasn't on. And of the very few people who initially took pictures anyhow, they would have their film bought by Kiss's people on the spot. The only photos you'll see of them as themselves with no makeup from that period are ones that were taken by themeselves, their families, close friends, business associates or any number of virtually infinite groupies, etc. - However, with one exception. There is footage of Gene and Paul in their pre-Kiss years makeup-less in publicity shots of their one pre-Kiss album(called Wicked Lester) that never officially got released, but likely would have been released in 1973 or 1974 - and there are school yearbook photos out there too.

Gene doesn't always use his ax guitar. It wasn't in the "Forever" video, for example. That was drummer Eric Carr in the video. Kiss began wearing make-up in the 1970's, took it off in the 80's, and put it back on in the 1990's. They've had it on ever since. But, in the 70's, they kept their identities a secret and never appeared without it.

A suggestion for your movie channel. You need to watch Detrot Rock City (1999). The film was produced by KISS specifically for all of the KISS fans out there. The Legend has it, (okay, the DVD commentary, not really legend) that KISS was going to produce a movie for their anniversary/comback. Gene Simmons, who is a big time movie fan, read through hundreds of scripts. All of them featured the fans, but they weren't very good. Then he found one that wasn't about the band, but about the fans, and the Legendary KISS concert in Detroit's Cobo Hall back in 1978.
Gene read the script and said, This is the one. We're making this movie for the fans.
Jay, from one KISS fan to another, this one is worth watching. This was movie made for us fans.

Paul and Gene began performing together in 1973 in a band named Wicked Lester, but their demo was rejected by the record companies. They broke that band up, hired Ace and Peter as replacements, and adapted their makeup scheme and the Kiss name in 1974. They took the makeup off in 1983, with the release of the Lick It Up album. Ace and Peter both left the band before this album (Peter was fired for rampant drug and alcohol abuse, Ace quit), so Paul and Gene thought they needed a new more contemporary look to keep the band going. They went back to the makeup in 1996 when Ace and Peter rejoined the band for a reunion tour.

Paul Stanley said that the 80's version of Kiss without makeup scored hit records without much support from the industry (or Gene Simmons' participation... he was busy making movies) ... So, it fell on Stanley to write all the hit songs... produce the entire record... do promo for the album to get on radio on MTV... arrange the music video shoots... and book the tours and approve the stage shows.
Gene was barely writing songs and barely playing on the albums, and only showed up for photos, videos and concerts... However, this 1985 album 'Asylum' finally had a solid Kiss line-up... (the late) Eric Carr on drums, and Bruce Kulick (lead guitar) who stayed w/ Kiss until the 1996 reunion w/ Ace & Peter... They were getting comfortable w/ the "big 80's" rock sound and the album went gold (half million copies sold)... The non-makeup Kiss was also selling out arenas in the US that year and played Madison Square Garden in NYC for the first time, since the 70's w/ the original Kiss.
Two other popular Kiss songs from this record were 'Tears are falling' and 'Who wants to be lonely'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥

The last album for a while where Gene was a major contributor was "Lick it Up" in 1983. Paul's putting in the extra effort paid off for the even bigger hit "Animalize". Gene was fully back for 1989's "Hot in the Shade" which sold short of platinum like "Asylum" but was the better album.

@@bookhouseboy280 Gene still had songs on the 80's records, but he basically did the minimum effort... Made the demos, did his bass parts, and then sang the final version... I think Paul Stanley called them "junk" and had to re-arrange the tracks to make the albums, and then hired a studio bassist to do a bulk of the records.
People don't realize that Gene Simmons did not even play much bass on his 1978 solo album 🤣

The song is written by Paul Stanley, Desmond Child and Jean Beauvoir ex-Plasmatics. Beauvoir also recorded the bass on Uh All Night! and Who Wants To Be Lonely from the Asylum album.
Check out Hate, Childhood's End and Seduction Of The Innocent from Carnival Of Souls The Final Sessions from 1997. The last album with guitarist Bruce Kulick. A phenomenal album imo

You have to listen to Alive, Alive II. I love KISS since i was 10 years old (early 1979) i've seen KISS 64 times live since 1980. I like all KISS records but like the most besides the live albums: Dressed to KIll, Hotter than hell, Destroyer and the songs on Killers. But also like 80's KISS.

This drummer is Eric Carr, he passed away of stomach cancer in the mid to late 90's I think. Kiss has had at least 3 drummers and at leat 4 lead guitarists.

Great reaction, now you gotta do... Tears Are Falling... from the same album. That's the late great Eric Carr on drums and the sensational Bruce Kulick on lead guitar in this 80s Kiss line up.

If Paul is singing about what I think he is. Yes 💰 can buy it. There's a reason why it's called the worlds oldest profession.
