KISS took off their makeup by the mid 80's because critics had accused them they were nothing without it. They put in back on for the reunion tour because all of the original members came back by the mid 90's and Grunge had taken root. The talent was always there. They always want to give their audiences: The Total Package. Makeup, Explosions, Fire etc

    • @bamachine

They are far from the most talented musicians or singers(except Ace, he is top tier guitarist), they have even said this about themselves but very few put on a show like they do.

@@paulrogers4483 I guess Paul was only willing to share the lead singing with Gene. I guess they were mostly even in the early albums. I love Peter’s scratchy voice and Ace’s stoner voice. I had Eric’s unfinished solo cd hubby and I found at a used cd store circa 2003. It

The makeupless era of Kiss contains lots of super great songs! With your rap background, you would definitely love "All hell's breaking loose". But there are more. The greatest hits of the era includes "Lick it up", "Thrills in the night", "Tears are falling", "Crazy crazy nights", "Who wants to be lonely", "Hide your heart", "Turn on the night", "UH! all night" (lots of "nights" there) and the ballads "Reason to live" and "Forever". My personal favorites also include "A million to one", "My way", "I've had enough", "Exciter", "Not for the innocent", "Silver spoon" and "(You make me( rock hard". Enjoy! :-)
Oh yeah - they took off the makeup mainly because their career had sadly been dwindling up until the early 80s and they decided that something had to change. For a while it actually worked - songs like "Lick it up" and "Heaven's on fire" in particular reignited their career in spades. In 1996, after their career had once more been going downhill for years, they put the makeup back on - and this reignited their career once more, as you may have noticed :-)

Their show was still great but it was a little toned down from the shows I have seen on tape. There was some pyro but it was much tamer than what I have seen from earlier shows on video. Their next show I saw, in 2004 with Poison, the pyro was a little bigger but still not what you saw back in the 70's-90's.

They took the makeup off in the early 80's, and the change really re-launched their career. In the mid 90's they reunited with their original drummer and lead guitarist and they put the makeup back on for the reunion tour. Even though those two left the band again, KISS kept the makeup on, and have ever since. But there was a period there for over a decade where the KISS makeup had disappeared.
I entered junior high in 1984 and was introduced to heavy metal about that time. This was the first KISS song I remember hearing, so it's an all time favorite of mine. I remember being introduced to this song, another your reacted to today, Quiet Riot's "Metal Health," Twisted Sister's "I Wanna Rock," Ratt's "Round and Round," and Van Halen's "Panama," around the same time. From that point on, with a few exceptions for the likes of ZZ Top or Joan Jett, my boom box was playing metal all day, every day. And it worked out that I had the biggest boom box on the team, so I got to be the DJ on the bus to every football game for 6 years. So the team heard almost all metal all the time too. And with it being the 80's, they were all fine with that! God I miss the 80's.
Two other KISS songs to check out. For a very similar vibe to this one, try "Lick it Up." And you have to listed to "I Love it Loud." That's an absolute must for any KISS fan.

    • @matthewvade6553
      @matthewvade6553 2 года назад

@@paulwalsh2344 LOL! I'd say judging by album sales in the 80's, there are a lot of people about our age who had that same thought. I did the math once, and I have so many 80's metal songs on my PC that if I hit play, it wouldn't stop for about 6 weeks.
One note I forgot to add to my original comment. I got to see KISS with Winger and Slaughter in August of 1990. When "Heaven's on Fire" was played, they had these flamethrowers on stage that had to have shot flames 20-30 feet in the air. I was 12 rows back, and the heat was so intense I had to put my hands in front of my face and turn away. How they stood being on stage right next to things was beyond me. When they brought out the old KISS sign with the flashing strobe lights for the last song, they blew the power transformer to the building. Took them 20 minutes to get enough power to one of the microphones to tell us all to go home.
You can add Winger and Slaughter to your bands to check out. You already did a Slaughter ballad, but you really need to checkout "Up All Night" by them, and "Easy Come, Easy Go" does a great job of showing what Winger was like live.

Love them or hate them, one thing cannot be denied, they are marketing geniuses. Their first concert, they rented a limo. Early on they said "everyone wants to be like the Beatles, we want to be like Coca Cola". When glam rock was fading, they took their makeup off so people would take them seriously. When retro was in they put it back on. And of course, their music is catchy.

The best KISS album (in my opinion) is KISS: Alive. Its also the first album i ever bought. Start on side one, track one (which is the song "Deuce") and just let it play. Loud. It captures them at their finest. Just killer songs. Great guitar riffs, vocals, etc...you get the idea. Amber: there's a long drum solo during the song "100,000 Years" which you would really dig. A phenomenal live album from beginning to end!

KISS is so interesting to me…..a recurring nightmare I had as a child about fully KISS make up wearing Gene Simmons chasing me through my elementary school gave me an irrational fear of tall men that lasts to this day. The era of no makeup allowed me to enjoy KISS fully, for the first time ever. Paul Stanley was always a heartthrob, and once the makeup (and mostly the platform boots) was off, I was able to appreciate Gene Simmons, too❤❤❤

Kiss had a few albums without their makeup in the 80s pretty much as a promotional gimmick because back in the day photographers were always trying to grab "secret" photos of members of Kiss without their makeup. So to celebrate the release of their Lick It Up album they held a press conference where they officially appeared without makeup for the first time. The promotional gimmick worked because the next few albums were among the most successful of their career.
Please react to Love Gun or Come On And Love Me, an early Kiss song and a REALLY early Kiss song.

Kiss 'Rock & Roll Over' was the first album I ever bought, when the song 'Calling Dr. Love' was on the radio in 1976, I believe - I think I bought it early '77. I was in 2nd grade. Their Dynasty concert was the second concert I ever went to (First was Elvis in '76) - my parents took me to the Kiss concert when I was in 6th grade. Even though they were 'iffy' about it, they walked out of the arena as fans. Still a huge fan to this day. And yeah, my sister is all about Paul Stanley as well.

In the eighties people kept trying to downplay KISS by saying that their popularity was only due to their makeup. Part of their mystique was they would never allow their faces to be seen without the makeup, so they would wear bandannas over their faces when they did interview without the makeup in order to stay hidden. They finally decided to show everyone that they were more than the makeup and finally took it off.

Great reaction! Kiss has been legendary since they started. Rock stars have an image but Kiss fans are called the Kiss Army and the band was into merchandising even back in the 70’s! You can buy a custom painted waterproof full sized coffin with the pictures of Kiss painted on it to be buried in, and until then you can use it to keep your booze cold, that’s the whole point of making it waterproof! Gene had a TV series called Family Jewels that was on for several years.
