Fellow FSHDer here. My experience navigating the Kafkaesque world of disability "assistance" services has taught me two things. (1) Delays aren't failures of the process; they ARE the process. They are intentional, intended to make all but the most determined give up and go away. (2) Very few senior decision-makers in these agencies are disabled. They therefore have little understanding of our needs and think we should be grateful for whatever crumbs they toss our way.

🚐 Wow what a rollercoaster! I really admire your resilience and ability to hang in there during that loooong process. I’m keen for part 3 and the van tour!
I have FSHD as well. It has been great to find your channel and see how other people deal with the condition. Keep it up! :)

This was very informative. After 9 years, I finally was able to buy a wheelchair van last July. Somehow, my driving restriction disappeared from my license though I have never been able to drive without some kind of accommodation), and after some research discovered the whole DRS process. I am on the path of getting a DRS evaluation for possible hand controls (I found about low assist from you - thank you! Good to know that's available). I started the process in July 2023 and, mostly through my internal medicine office's incompetence, am still waiting for an appointment. Now I know that my expectations are entirely unrealistic. Maybe I'll be driving by next year. Wish me luck!

I'm so sorry to hear that you're also having troubles with the process ☹️ hang in there!! I would also really recommend reaching out to your state's client assistance program. They can help you navigate and expedite the process. Best of luck to you 💪

🚙I can hear the pain, frustration and happiness in your video. Thanks for sharing the painful story and timeline... it is so important for others to know it isn't an easy process... but hopefully can be productive in the very long run!!

9:13 This was a nice moment for laughter amid so much bad news.
    I couldn't find a van. Will this do?🚙

I get how frustrating working with folk rehab can be. I work with state services for the blind in Minnesota and since I’m adult, it’s pretty much vocal rehab and if you don’t use their services within two years, there goes your case.

I think what you said about these systems not being built to help people, having lots of red tape and being hard to access unfortunately isn't an American exclusive thing. I've found it to be the same over here in England. It really sucks, is very frustrating and demoralising.

I will have to save part 3 and the van tour for another night 😅 this whole thing gives me flash backs and make me angry. For you, for me, for everyone who has to fight so hard for basic access needs to be met. I started the process for my manual wheelchair in March of 2023 and finally received it in December of 2023 and what it taught me was to not trust anyone. If someone says they are doing a certain aspect of the process, the reality is nope. Just nope.

That is bureaucracy at its absolute worst. Congratulations on getting through it, but no one should have to endure that.

🚐 Just found your videos, it’s great that you push through and accomplished so much. I don’t remember seeing you talking about how the van itself was being paid for. I am working with my state agency now and they will pay for modifications to a van that I will purchase. Are they paying for everything van and modifications? I’m going to go watch your third video to see but hopefully that information is there.

They didn't pay for my base van because they (incorrectly) told me that they couldn't!! Video to come at a later date allll about that haha but they totally can. And if they tell you they can't, contact your state's Client Assistance Program and they can help you. Direct them to Section 103, part 8 of the Rehabilitation Act, it says that transportation can be provided in connection with another VR service. The modifications are the VR service, the vehicle can be paid for in connection with that.
