To younger me that was afraid to go out in my wheelchair, I would say just do it and don't think about what anyone else thinks of you. Enjoy the freedom of your wheelchair, don't be limited by it. (apart from inaccesability)

"Don't feel inferior if you can't do complex things like wheelies". I think you went a bit wrong by calling it a "basic skill". I know it's probably not advisable, but to feel completely confident on short trips, I don't take my diuretic tablet until I get home - so I'm not rushing to and from the loo.

try to go out with supportive friends especially if you're young. if you're out and about with your friends people tend to not stare as much when you're rolling around a store with people your age rather than with your parents.

I definately second the fit and customization of the wheels
    Other points to increase confidence:
    1. Don't think of being "wheelchair bound" or "confined to a wheelchair" the wheelchair is the solution to a problem and they are in fact your legs and feet, your wheels get you where you want to go
    2. Tied in to point 1, take care of your wheels (if you're physically able too), clean your casters and connection points of the big wheels regularly, this keeps them rolling smoothly
    3. Wear comfortable clothing, there's a lot out there for both men and women and develop a new style check wheels2walking guys if you need tips, ladies Gem here has you covered
    4. Get involved with the community, there are groups on social media, RUclips channels, adaptive sports clubs..... you name it, especially for you newer wheelies there's nothing like knowing people that can relate to how you feel (like had a flat tire? We get the hell of that, shout out to fellow latexallery folks that aren't allowed to change the tire themselves, we get it without any explanation)
    5. Don't let people belittle you, just because you're in a wheelchair doesn't mean you're stupid
    6. If you have the ability to stand and maybe walk a bit you're not a fraud or "lazy"
    7. You don't owe anyone an explanation about why you're in wheels (frankly I find it rude if it's literally the first thing people ask when I don't know them and never answer it, you don't ask someone with glasses why they wear one right? Medical confidentiality exist for a reason) and if you don't want to explain then don't, I know quite a few that lie just to be done
    8. Don't apologize if someone bumps into you because that person wasn't paying attention where he or she was going while you were

This is a great video! I like to match the colors of my wheelchair with my hair or nail polish. It is a fun conversation starter when on public transportation or at the airport. I was like, if people are going to stare at me I would give them something interesting to look at. I was so happy when I was approached by a curious little kid and her first questions were about my hair color and not why am I in a wheelchair. I actually love talking to curious kids, it bothers me more when parents get embarrassed and shoo them away. (let them learn something new!) Traveling to unfamiliar places more often helped build up my confidence.
Also just watching your videos and sharing them with my family has helped me, and also helped my family understand my needs as well as actual proof that I am not being stubborn when I insist I don't need help on certain tasks.

One of the things I find really helps my confidence when going out is, because there aren't a lot of sidewalks (let alone curb cuts at the corners) where I live (small town in a rural area), I made sure I knew the laws about where it was legal to walk in the road on the outskirts of town (most are 2-lane roads, some with shoulders, some without), because that means that those are places I can take my chair. In fact, last spring, I had so much confidence from knowing those particular laws that someone, who apparently had great disdain for my audacity of going down a 2-lane road with no shoulder, decided to call the sheriff on me - all that person got was an earful of "she's perfectly within her rights, get over it" from the dispatch deputy (not sure whether it was the sheriff himself, or one of his deputies, that came up and told me that, but whoever it was took off after telling me that and, from the looks of it, probably went straight to the police station to let them know that if someone called them trying to report me, that the matter was already settled). I told my best friend about it later and we both had a good laugh.

So, I am a relatively new wheelchair chair user, I’m not completely full time but I’d say about 98% of the time I’m a wheelchair user now. I didn’t used to need one as often but my disabilities progressed and I needed one. I just got a custom chair and it’s made life a lot easier but I’m still struggling with wanting to do the things I used to not need a chair for and you’ve really helped me not give in to depression during this time and I wanted to thank you so much for it. Your videos have helped me a ton!

7 years with a wheelchair for me this March and I’ve personally never had a confidence issue in my chair once I got my first own chair delivered (which is the one I count as me starting to use a chair, I did have a loaner for about a month while waiting) I’m now on my third custom ordered chair because I wasn’t listened to the first two times lol But now I have a for me perfect chair that has the tapered front I wanted and need, a low backrest that doesn’t get in the way as I’m pushing, upholstery that is well padded so I don’t feel the metal or straps through all the time. I have Spinergy wheels and my whole chair is black except for metal color on footrest and the metal parts of the push handles. I even have black push rims on my chair as I use the Surge rims, and black spokes on my wheels hehe I didn’t get to pick color or wasn’t asked at least when my wheels were ordered but I have to admit I do like the all black look of my chair. Black just goes with everything! I’ve just customized my chair a bit with slap on bracelet style reflective strips above the casters on both sides, and one on the bar across the backrest. And I have valve caps on the wheels that light up as you roll, though the batteries have run out on both now so I need to change them lol But the lit up valve caps are both a fashion statement and cheap life insurance tbh. It makes my wheelchair more fun, and it makes it easier to see me when I go out anywhere after dark, and it also lights up the ground around me a little which means I also see better. Probably my best customization hack is the LED valve caps and reflective straps or tape or spoke decorations. Looks nice and saves your life when it’s dark outside, which it is here from about 16:00 in wintertime, even earlier just before Christmas. Sometimes around Christmas I’ve even put battery powered Christmas lights on the back of my chair lol

@@Wheelsnoheels They're meant for cars, but are apparently illegal in the UK. I got mine off Amazon.

    • @ReyOfLight
      @ReyOfLight 4 года назад

Here the LED caps are sold in the bicycle aisle. I think they’re illegal on cars here as well, but legal on bicycles since they’re sold in physical shops too (I get mine from a chain called Biltema which is a shop that sells car parts and bicycles and accessories for the two along with a whole lot of other things too) But online has a lot more than physical shops has if a physical shop has any at all. I’m semi tempted to try multi colored LED caps sometime lol But I’m afraid the multi colored versions would be a bit too big and with that have a higher risk of breaking. The LED caps are still a lot higher than a regular cap so you need to be careful. It’s not in the way in any way, just have to be mindful and try to not hit the caps when they’re sticking up further than the standard caps.
But LED caps are totally worth it, both fun and better visibility!

I've never been afraid to go bold with my fashion choices and I definitely don't shy away from unnatural hair colors. If I feel like going out in my cow print pants with bright purple hair I do so. A few confidence tips I learnt:
Take someone with you on your first few trips out then when you do go alone for the first time make it a short trip, somewhere you know so it can be a success, then you have more confidence for the next time.
Have the confidence to tell people you don’t need help/for them to push you but be polite, I always say something like “thank you so much for asking but I can manage”. I think it’s important not to scare them off from asking again because someone else or even me on a bad day may need that help. You may need to be really insistent as some people don’t like to accept no.

(in the U.S., it's a federal violation to deny someone bringing their medical equipment into public places). And good on him - there are some disabled people where it's a choice between a snappy comeback and a meltdown when they're confronted about that sort of thing.

I don’t (yet) have a custom chair but rather a standard folding aluminium chair, only ‘different’ thing about it is that it’s a narrower seat. I am currently mid transition between mainly managing to walk with a rollator and using a chair for days out/longer trips to now having to use my wheelchair as the primary and rollator for only very short walks. As the transition progresses I will be continuing to work with my neurological physiotherapist and she will hopefully get the ball rolling (ha!) for at least getting a partial voucher for a custom chair but this takes time and until then I’m finding it a real struggle to have any real independence in the wheelchair, these chairs just aren’t designed for longer term independent lifestyles. I have got spoke reflectors, a pekka pack and good seat cushion and want to get some lights but I’m in a difficult in between situation with no good option. Physio is coming round tomorrow and I will talk with her more.
If anyone has any good customisation ideas for a four wheeled rollator with seat I would love to hear them, I’m at a bit of a loss, I want to do something that looks good and helps me be seen in low light.

I knew someone that would bling up her canes with strips of faux diamonds it was so pretty. Maybe you could look into getting something like that.

I want to give you a "tip" but I can't see a link for it below in your description. Maybe add a 'PayPal Me' link which will make it easier for people to send you a tip. Your videos are helping me and I want to show my appreciation. Thank you. xx

I'm getting married this summer and I'm using my wheelchair for distances longer than like 30 metres... for example the aisle in the church is probably... 60-70m? And then back and forth it's the double. I don't think I can manage to walk that distance without giving me A LOT of pain and ruining the day that way, but at the same time.. rolling down the aisle with all those stares would make me feel really uncomfortable. I've had the wheelchair for about two years now so I'm not very confident yet. I wouldn't be alone in the aisle since in Sweden traditionally the couple walk down the aisle together, but still, I feel very insecure. Any suggestions on what to do, anyone?

Oh wow congratulations. To be honest, if your walking or rolling, everyone will be looking at you. Because you are the beautiful bride, and you will be looked at by everyone who loves and cares the most about you. They wont see a disability, or a wheelchair. They will see a beautiful bride. xxx

@@Wheelsnoheels Thank you so much Gem for your answer and your kind words! I hope I can muster the confidence to do this. I feel quite okay with my friends and family, but I haven't even met half of the people my future husband has invited. So I guess I'm mainly nervous about them who have never seen me in a wheelchair before. But I'll try to think of your encouragement :)
