Great video.. i used to do all that when i was younger... i used to drive a 1990 camaro. But as i got older i got heavier unfortunately. the car sat to low and man did it seem like i had to climb a mountain just to get out of my car. Doing all that was fun while it lasted but now i use a van with a lift in it etc. And believe you me, i understand what you mean when you said in one of your other videos. Saving your shoulders as much as possible. Doing that is very important as you get older because you will need those shoulders for getting out of bed, using the bathroom, showering etc. Dressing yourself etc. Driving is important but not as important as daily living etc. Well in my case it is. Anyway, great video and keep rocking those videos . 😀😎

Hi, What saved my Nissan car from scratches and paint getting ruined from my wheelchair banging/hitting the door is I had commercial clear plastic put on part of the passenger back door. (behind the driver's seat). It doesn't peel off or look gross and I've had it on my car for years. You can't even notice it unless you are kind of looking for it because you know it's there. The other area that you had talked about getting scratches on inside the door jam or whatever it's called.....I had a piece of heavy duty commercial plastic strip put on that area. Unfortunately it didn't come in clear, it's black, but it doesn't look bad on my red car. It's better then my car getting all banged up from my wheelchair.
Lastly, I have a "wheelchair topper" on top of my car. (Not sure of exact name). I purchased it from Golden Boy Mobility here in San Diego county, California. It's a big, heavy, enclosed unit sitting on top of my car that opens up with a push of a button that I control. A side opens up and a chain drops down that is attached to a bar and I put that bar under my seat after folding up my wheelchair. I push the button to lift up my chair and it brings it up and puts my chair on its side inside the unit. My chair is safe, secure, and free of all weather elements. I can't even imagine breaking down my wheelchair everytime I get in and out of my car. I think I'd like be exhausted from body aches. My wheelchair isn't ruining the interior of my car also which is a huge bonus. The reason for the clear plastic that I have on my car back door is because as my wheelchair is being lifted up it will sometimes bang up against the door if I'm not on level ground or guiding my chair with my hand a little. I can't imagine not having this unit on my car. I love it.

Hey yea I’ve seen those carriers before! Unfortunately my chair is rigid so I don’t think it would fit one. Saving to hopefully get a pick up some day where I can put the chair in the bed

Thanks man. I'm newly disabled so I'm still adjusting to doing things differently. Your video really helped me because I have a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe and it didn't seem so high up before I lost feeling in my feet and legs due to neuropathy. Hopefully I can get better at getting in and out of it.

Thank you for the video! I am now in a wheelchair myself and have some questions what kind of wheelchair is that and what do you call the ones that you can take the back tires off of? Okay one more question the wheelchairs that I've been given are your basic wheelchairs for my hospitals and stuff should I have the tires that cut into the dark and set a roll on the dirt and I'm trying to eliminate that problem so I can roll on the grass and dirt and not cut into the grass and dirt any advice

I've got spina bifida and people always ask me about how I get my wheelchair in and I'm watching your video now and it made me so nervous when you are pushing on your car door to get in. Freaked me out lol. And the other day I forgot to put one of my brakes on getting into the car and I landed on the pavement in a parking lot. You have way more upper body strength than I ever would. There's no way I'd be able to get into an SUV. I've got a sedan where my seat goes down a little bit lower than yours so I can get myself in and I do the same thing. I fold my chair up lean it against the car door. Take one of my wheels off, put it in the back and lift up the frame and throw it in the front seat of the passenger!

      Can you get in SUV
if you used a sliding board? I have a neck injury and b4 I got a van I used to ride with others I was able to use it and push on window frame while using other arm to pull myself up the board. After getting a van I've not transfered in a vehicle in 30yrs I'd never be able to today. .

@@elvasmith5262 oh god no. I can't leave ft myself up that high. And using a transfer board to get in is almost impossible because it would have to go up and over your wheel. And my legs are heavy because I have lymphedema. So if I have my legs hanging I could fall forward . At least for me anyways.

You all amaze me with transfering in and out of vehicle but I cant imagine doing all that to get in and out. I have a C5-6 SCI and back when I was younger.. I was always out and about doing stuff Id run errands and have to run in and out and I cant imaging transfering that many Xs a day. Even though I drive from my chair I still hate gettting in and out to put mail in the mailbox.or get gas. Or to go in a wawa or sheetz. Its about Time....someone else could run in and out b4 Id get out and my van doors shut. It was way easier to get someone to help me. That was one of the things that was hard for me to do. I always was very independant and then after the accident It sucked depending on others. So I pushed myself to where I could do everything for myself and had gotten very strong for my level of injury . But still Id ask whoever was with me because its faster.
I got a van and I always liked pick ups b4 accident so I just put big knobby tires on van and changed the mufflers and I love it. Its like a little house on wheels...lol. Alot of people have tried to talk me into a mini van but you barely have any room and I like a little more metal around me. Those minivans if in a accident are like stepping on a soda can. Ive been in a couple fender benders and my van might get a scratch and their vehicle has thousands in damage! .
Ive listened to several if your videos and Congrates for 10yrs together. Able bodied people cant seem to stay together that long. After being in a relationship b4 and after injury I think after injury its a different kind of bond. But thats just my opinion, 11:1Ive chose to not to be in a relationship for 20yrs.
I started having severe pain and Dr says nothings wrong. So after the dating site disaster. And then the issue with pain I think its not fair for someone to have to deal with me not wanting to go do stuff often because im in pain. . Now that Im way older than you all I figure if God puts the right person there for me I will know. I do miss having companionship.
My pet pev is seeing someone yrs after accident and they say. Oh I see your not any better, im so sorry just because your still in a wheelchair. ...lol

I wish all these demo peeps would say their LOI and whether or not they're complete or incomplete and also demo how to transfer WITH the anti tip bars on. I transfer with my AT bars on and it makes it EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to transfer into my car.

The scratches on the driver side of my car are awful! I try to be careful, but more and more appear all the time. My poor husband despairs of me. 😆
One thing I do when I have the chair on my passenger seat is to have the seatbelt plugged in ready so I can pull the upper part of the belt over and around the chair. It's just a little security to reduce the likelihood of the chair being thrown through the windscreen if I have to brake hard!

Agreed! I’ve made that mistake before and there are scratches in my dashboard to prove it 😂

They need to put a handle on the pillar post so you can use that on that vehicle. Hard on steering wheel to use it the way you do. They have a handle on the passenger side on most vehicles but not on the driver side. Mistake by the vehicle manf.
