Wow, that "detective" is a special kind of stupid. She could have gotten more information about the scammer if she would have played along for even a few minutes. She was under no obligation to tell the guy about what happened. Now the scammer is aware about what happened and that the police are involved and can distance himself from the situation. This means that the likelihood of him being caught is much lower, especially if he is in a different state/country.
