This has to be one of the most visually beautiful music videos ever. Just look at the shadows and use of lighting. Also the throwaway sounds, like those sudden yelps and female vocalising during the chorus, add so much more value to this song. Truly a haunting masterpiece.

Oh anything at all. But all I feel is nothing"). Everyone around them become less trustworthy because who actually cares for them and who just wants to gain from them? ("Who can you trust?") I really love the lighting on this. There are moments in it that feel like watching the sun set, giving a haunting mix of warmth and a sense of loss. And it's beautiful how such a warm brilliance is used to wash everything out in time to the lyrics as they sing about a loss of discernment. It manages to capture both hues of gold and also play out the feelings of the song in a tangible way that isn't as obvious as an acted bit might be.

As a long time ID fan, I have a theory on what this music video is telling us. I think everything he touches, somehow turns to gold. I know the theory sounds a bit far-fetched and wild, but its something to think about.

It's referring to King Midas, and all the lyrics seem to say the same message: " 'Gold' isn't everything. We only get greedier when we are given 'gold'."
King Midas' story is that everything he touches turns to gold, but he ends up turning his daughter into a golden statue by accident (he loved his daughter very much, so you know, sad ending with all the riches). Plus he couldn't eat (all his food turned to gold), everything he owned became useless pretty much. The idea is that having money, fame, fortune... they aren't worth much.
Actually it's a Greek myth about a king. Zeus, the king of the gods, granted him a wish, and Midas wanted the power to turn anything he touched to gold. Everything starts to go wrong when he notices even the food he touches turns to gold. He hugs his daughter, and she turns to gold. Zeus doesn't revoke the wish, and Midas dies of starvation.

Lol, same! It's funny how their music grows on you. There are songs like this that I occasionally skipped over when originally listening to the album and now it's one of my favorites. Some of them just need a little more time to appreciate than others, but I've still yet to hear a bad song.
So this song helped inspire a dream of mine. I want to open a super nerdy bar themed after the story of King Midas, black white and gold themed and It will be called the Marigold. Opening night I want this song to play as people come in, dim lights, dark. I'm on stage, nice suit and tie. Pretty sure that this song is about the fact that their success has caused everything around them to seem perfect. Huge tours, platinum albums, etc. Unfortunately, much like King Midas, the initial glamor of everything they touch turning to gold has been damaged by the fact that it's now impossible for them to know if people are wanting to be groupies/praising their music because they really like it or if they just want a piece of the glamor/wealth. Nothing is what it once was, and it never will be again.
