People commented that they didn’t realise Prince could play the guitar so well but you need to remember that he played all the instruments on his first five albums, so therefore had to be very competent. He only needed a band to tour. Putting the different bands together, getting them to play so tight, arrangements suitable for a band, all shows the talent of Prince. He was an exceptional band leader and while he had extremely talented musicians in all his bands, they themselves were all amazed at the varied and many areas of music Prince undertook with such talent. They all commented he often played their own instruments better than themselves. I am amazed at how his memory was so powerful.

Prince's aesthetic was inspired by glam rock (early to mid 70s). That's what everyone in all popular genres wanted to emulate in the late 70s and 80s.
That gradually ended when Nirvana came out (late 80s) and popularized casual wear.

You are totally correct. Prince was nothing like Michael Jackson. Prince was a multi talented man. Played multiple instruments, created some of the best tunes. Here, in the USA, he was a master of entertainment. Prince was from Minnesota and when his movie, “Purple Rain” came out in the ‘80s, Prince Nelson was introduced to us as a profound guitarist with a head voice that was magical. It’s a privilege listening to Prince.

@@OriginalMasters respectfully, you are incorrect. There are no credits to Quincy Jones or anyone like him on a single Prince album. Michael Jackson was a phenomenally talented vocalist. Prince was phenomenally talented vocally, on guitar especially, and a plethora of other musical instruments. I remember a friendly argument with a co-worker in the early 1980s. He was going on and on about what a great dancer Michael Jackson was (and he was correct). However, I told him to watch Prince in the “Little Red Corvette” video and tell me who was the better dancer. Jan never did bring the subject up again…

Prince was very private and did not give interviews readily. Once a fan we all principally stayed with his music because it was so varied in genre and so musically artistic. ( and naughty) He said early in his career that he wanted to be remembered for his music and he almost forced his fans ( fam) to investigate the variables in his music and challenge their musical knowledge. He was always a teacher and as such his students were loyal. In 1984 when I was just about to turn 16 I heard When Doves Cry on the radio. The guitar introduction, at the time, impressed me, but over the years it impressed me even more, then when the song started it was one of the most unique things I’ve ever heard.
The grinding, moaning singing, The lack of bass which I wasn’t aware of at the time but I felt something different, the high vocals and the low vocals, all in a kind of hybrid of pop, hip-hop, rhythm and blues, and just pure heavy rock.
I became an instant Prince fan and by the time I was 18 he had released arguably his greatest album Sign of the Times.
I could speak about this album deeply, but for all intents and purposes of this video I only want to mention I Could Never Take the Place of your Man.
The guitar solo absolutely blew my mind at a time when I was in a band with three other guys who outvoted me to go from one style of music (which was my style because I was writing all the songs), to a hard rock sound leaning towards heavy metal (I was too young to protest and too insecure to walk away).
Besides the tone, note choice, phrasing and composition, the part that killed me was when he builds up with a lick into the climax just before the beat (3.09 on the original video), it’s incredible guitar playing.
When I proclaimed that Prince was a phenomenal guitar player and criminally underrated to most of the musicians and guitar players of that hairband era, I
was ridiculed. Some even stated that he was just a “faggot and a yellow jumpsuit”. Then again I was use to being ridiculed for my musical taste as I was into Frank Sinatra since I was 12 years of age and Bowie whey it wasn’t really cool.
The bottom line is: trying to take-in the scope of Prince’s immense talent in one look is a little like standing in your front garden and trying to see the curvature of the earth. It’s impossible.
Anyway, as always, a great video, great guitar playing, great musical knowledge, great personality, and thank you, Fil

Prince was constantly full of surprises as we, the fans, started to appreciate his skill. Bambi was on his earlier albums but they never were played on radio because he was considered an RnB artist. So songs like Bambi never got any wide airplay. And a Black guy playing guitar like this was not mainstream in the American Black community. Then slowly but surely, his prowess in singing, playing and performing just could no longer be contained by radio and MTV really started to show all the things this guy brought to the table which culminated with the release of Purple Rain. I am a huge MJ fan but there really is no comparison. If there was a modern day Verzus with Prince and MJ it would not really be a contest. Prince had too many tools and weapons in his arsenal. And I have seen both in concert. MJ’s concerts are choreographed to the minute. Prince concerts have a structure, but the show actually changed from night to night. Prince is definitely his own genre. Great video 👍🏾

Bambi was on his 2nd record, Prince was really unclassifiable as an artist because he was a genius & followed his muse. However early in his career he wrote a staggering amount of hit songs for himself as well as other acts, he was skilled at writing & producing within the pop genre. His talent deepened over time, he was in an elite classification in so many different areas that it's hard to believe. Prince uncoupled himself from a major label in the 90's and had total freedom to create. He also doesn't get proper credit for his singing & dancing. There's a Purple Rain video from Milan 2010 (audience made) that is unbelievable -- the guitar solo makes me cry, the energy exchange between Prince and the audience was on another level. I hope you have time to watch it someday.

Prince's Guitar is unbeatable. One of the problems from 1977 until his death was the frustration and envy of others. And I understand that perfectly. Frustration on the part of all those who were stars of the guitar, because it made them understand just by playing it, that they will never be better than him. It does not matter how many years they have or dedicate to playing it. It's very hard to deal with this. The way PRINCE plays guitar is ABSOLUTELY ORGANIC . He PLAYS guitar as he breathes. P knew every sound of a guitar such a way, that he could leave it on the ground and without touching it, only by moving it, could make you listen to a spontaneous musical composition and make you cry. No other person who plays the guitar, whether he is a guitar star or not, can do it like him. Never. However, any guitarist who dedicates himself to listening to Prince on the guitar without aspiring to be like him and with zero envy, will learn and improve SO MUCH. You know WHY? Cause Prince is a TEACHER himself. A long journey INTO PRINCE will bring you everything, and it will take out of the depths of yourself your true way of playing the guitar, YOURS. Because Prince is a master of music. Never forget it, and if you play the guitar, store everything you can still find from him on yt forever, listen to it when you need it and learn FROM IT. You will be surprised at your ability and yourself. Prince is a teacher,n and the best one you can have. And he gave it to the world for free. Put yourself under the influence of his guitar.... you will see how your identity as a guitarist blossoms.

They were also both united in that they both tragically died too young from prescribed drugs.

Of course, Id need to learn that aswell! This was a really cool video showcasing Prince's guitar wizardry. Prince's career is complex because it was Prince that chose to stare away from the mainstream machine. Prince got a taste of being on Top in the 80's & after he dives into that mainstream real, he quickly jumped back out intentionally. The companies control you at the top, especially back then & Prince being a TRUE artist hated that. The proof is in his entire career, after Purple Rain, he completely created music that sounded worlds apart from his prior hits before. Especially in the 90's you can see Prince start to mature business wise & musically. Prince eventually fought for his rights against record labels, woke up a lot of artists to own their masters & the industry started to blackmail him. Even at a point of the top radio stations, not playing his music. Prince ranted about this on his "Rave un2 the joy fantastic" Tour & that story gets even deeper. He has a song called "dont play me" where he vents about the blackmail. A MUST HEAR. It's him on acoustic guitar & vocals. Prince would even work & hire background singers that had only 200 views on youtube. Shelby J, 3rdeyegirl, none of these musicians were well known. Prince wanted to be in the family of Erykah Badu, sly & the family stone, Joni Mitchell, Carlos Santana, James Brown, Sade, Jimi Hendrix. Prince resented being known as just a "pop" artist. "One nite Alone: The Piano Album" Prince creates some amazing classical piano work as well melodic and meditative instrumental music. Prince was in his own realm, his own genre. I can't wait to wings of pegasus starts to see how not only amazing he is at other instruments but how much of an incredible dancer, writer & rapper he is. This doesn't count the man who was super charitable & spiritual everywhere he went. Prince is a lifetime study lol

Makes you realize why he became the artist formerly known as. Did so much so well, so unique, can't really box him up with a title.

Will that happen because of the label dispute, but aside from that - I agree!

He always worked out to build his strength and stamina. To walk across stage playing the guitar and without missing a stride, step up onto the piano stool then onto the piano top in two strides, then the drop to the knees and fall backwards, never missing a beat. He was a showman as you say. Many times an audience member making comments after seeing him, that they felt changed for having seen such a skilled performer who takes you along the music journey with him. He was a great philanthropist right from the beginning in the seventies. Many times playing in a large town he would check out what would benefit the homeless. He often delivered overcoats, blankets and food to be given out. He performed and donated the money to a school for young children that had been threatened with closure, I’m his home town. There are many stories now surfacing because he never wanted anyone to know. Often he would buy homes for band members having difficulties or give them money towards their homes. Paid many medical accounts for people in need. A truly humble man who told us in the lines of his first record that his life and music was FOR YOU.

Fil looks SO happy watching Prince go nuclear and destroy the intro on this performance. Excellent analysis of a complex one-of-a-kind musician.

Bambi is the sixth track on Prince’s second album Prince (1979)
    “I knew from the start
That I loved you with all my heart
    But you were untrue
You had another lover and she looked just like you”
In this video Wings of Pegasus discusses a 90’s live rendition of the track
If you don’t like the detailed discussion of Prince’s guitar playing, then at least listen to what Phil has to say about Prince’s artistry that cannot be categorised, indeed.
Prince played guitar, bass, keyboards, piano and drums, possessed an extreme vocal range, and delivered stellar live performances, some of which we will never forget. Remember the 2007 Super Bowl half-time show, or his appearance on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" at the 2004 Hall of Fame Induction of George Harrison?
On top of that Prince was a formidable studio and sound engineer who created a range of signature flanger/phaser/wah-wah effects that can be heard on many (in particular live) guitar tracks as well as percussive loops (When Doves Cry) What else?
Oh, have you ever seen or heard Prince DJ-ing?
I can highly recommend this channel if you are in to guitar playing, for its open mindedness, sincerity and skilled reviews of many great artists and tracks!

RIP both Prince and Tom Petty, who tried in vain to ease the physical pain of over performing. This joyful video supplanted that sad memory for me.

I agree. When there are actually natural remedies for pain, so many people, famous or not, get caught up, in the pharmaceutical industry highly dangerous and addictive pain relief. Getting addicted often leads to illegal street drugs, heroin and or fentynal. Many homeless people recite this as their path to their current plight. So very sad. Meanwhile the pharmaceutical companies responsible continue.....smh

I have been a huge Prince fan for many years and have seen him in concert a couple of times where he was an absolute beast on guitar. Prince's style was so multi genre but he really was funk, rock, blues, jazz and yes pop. He explored so many different genres of music, I always considered him a multi genre genius. Great video Fil, Prince was so great at so many other things but he never got the respect he should have gotten as a guitarist because, he was also an amazing guitarist.

This was right around the same time Prince appeared on SNL playing that same cobalt blue cloud guitar for a performance of Electric Chair. That Electric Chair performance is my single favorite Prince live performance. I had the honor of seeing him live twice, in fall 2000 and then April 2004.
Incidentally, that SNL performance is the ONLY time Prince ever played Electric Chair live.
Fil you should seek out that SNL performance of Electric Chair, it's truly mind blowing guitar playing.

The thing with Prince was after Purple Rain he went through different styles of music. So he had something for everyone is seems like. There were many years that I wasn't into some of the music he did just because it wasn't in my wheelhouse at the time. Prince also went through a time where his music was so hard to listen too because he was so against the music industry's way of producing artists he just disappeared from the mainstream. Is was only until he died that music was being put out and not banned from platforms. Had this not been the case many years ago I think he would have been even a bigger draw to people. Prince was one of those people that could really do it all.

Hello fill, when they made prince they threw away the mold afterwards. He was unique in every way. Mega star. I’ve been a fan of him my whole adult life. 🤟🏻

Soul, R&B, Funk, Blues, psychedelic, Jazz RnR the cat could do it all and exceptionally.
I was holding down a barstool in the Viking Bar on the West Bank of Minneapolis about ‘78. A Winter Tuesday night and a trio led by this short black dude with a huge Afro and shades set up and began a scorching set of psychedelicized blues, definitely blew away the ten or twelve hippies hanging in the bar. I didn’t know Prince from a hole in the ground and still couldn’t swear it was him but it was a Hell of a ride whoever it was!

The album version from his 2nd album "Prince" is classic rock with a sick outro solo. There are so many videos now of his amazing guitar performances that are worth analyzing as well. This is from the Nude Tour concert in Tokyo... The Purple Rain performance from the same concert was great as well...

I saw him in concert in 1985. That is still the 2nd most money I've ever paid for a concert ticket! Buddy Guy is first, but that was only this year, and only $50 more! Both shows were worth every single penny. No regrets.
My first year of high school, "I Wanna Be Your Lover" was all over our school and community dances. That song introduced me to the awesomeness of Prince, his funked-out guitar, and his fun falsetto. I was an instant fan! I had no clue who he was, what he looked like, or that he could play...well, everything. I just loved him. Still do.
Thank you, Fil, for spending time on Prince. He's still a treasure.
