- Hello Folks and welcome to my Channel.
Today I'm Restoring this vintage wooden tool box.
This railroader's toolbox was a true labor of love, When I first acquired this historical artefact, it was hidden beneath layers of weathered, chipped paint, so thick that it had completely obscured the original wood underneath. Rather than aiming for a flawless finish, I chose to preserve the toolbox's authentic character and unique imperfections, which told the story of its long and rugged journey.
The initial step involved meticulously disassembling the toolbox. As I carefully removed the myriad screws and hinges, I was struck by the aged wood and the history it carried within its grain. This toolbox had been a faithful companion to someone, and I was determined to honour its legacy.
After disassembling the pieces, I turned to a sandblaster to strip away the layers of paint that concealed the wood's inherent beauty. The abrasive power of the machine revealed the natural grain patterns and rich tones that had been hidden for so many years. It was an exciting moment as the wood's unique blemishes and markings came to light.
While the exterior now bore the scars of time and use, I chose not to repair or conceal the imperfections in the timber. These marks told a tale of the toolbox's history, and I wanted to preserve them as part of its character. The toolbox's blemishes were a testament to its long service in the hands of railroaders, and I celebrated them as a vital part of its story.
To protect the wood and enhance its inherent beauty, I applied a generous coat of linseed oil. This not only deepened the natural colors but also acted as a protective barrier against future wear and tear.
The vintage railroader's toolbox emerged from its restoration as a beautifully rejuvenated piece of history. It now proudly showcases its journey through time, complete with the imperfections that bear witness to its many years of service. Restoring this toolbox was labour-intensive yet fulfilling process, allowing me to honour the legacy and preserve the unique character of this cherished relic.

Never seen the dry agitate in an ultrasonic tank method. I'm going to try that tomorrow. I did a similar job on a WW1 ammunition box. A very interesting box, if you have not seen one, check them out. Have also had good results sandblasting antique wood window frames. I cut the pressure back a bit and vary my angle to try and avoid digging into the grain too much.
Yes I did find blasting the wood tricky. I can imagine the softer parts of the wood getting chewed out quicker. Thanks I will check the boxes you mentioned 👍
I am currently restoring an old crate very similar to yours. Even the hard disolve black paint over the yellow stuff underneath. Mine must be at least over 100 years old.
Wow how strange is that. Any idea what it is from your point of view ?
It was my grandfather's and he used it as a toolchest. He was in the Australian army so it may have come from there. Not saying it was an ammo box as I feel mine is bigger but less sturdy.
Great job, but...! I can't understand why you use modern glue which, as we know, cannot be separated from wood. The wood will crack sooner than the glue will let go. I pity future generations of carpenters who will want to fix something, improve something. They have no chance.
Thanks for watching and checking it out. I only used old fashion wood glue.
The glue not so good
@@mr.shadestrains6033 what's wrong with the glue ?
Do another 📻 restoration. Huge viewing figures on the last one.
@@davewhiteman8353 Thanks Dave I know I should. I do have some to do.
Begore it was a tool box it was for sure a munition box. I have 1 just like this one
Thanks for watching Laura, that's is some good feedback 👍
I’ve never been a fan of sandblasting wood but after seeing your results, I changed my mind. The beautiful timber underneath that paint seemed to soak up the oil. The oiled timber and heat blued metalwork compliment each other perfectly. I’m dying to know how you came up with using blasting media in an ultrasonic cleaner. You watch, everyone will start to use that method now.
Thank you for those kind words Shedmanx. I was never a fan of blasting wood either but I had to try something better than the paint stripper. I'm an ideas man my friend. Give me a problem and I'll give you some crazy solution lol. It will be interesting to see if anyone gives it a try. Just remember you watched it here first 🤪 hehehe. I'm Glad to hear you think the blued metal and wood go well together. 👍👍👍👍
Love it , great how you always do something totally different , Was surprised the sandblaster didn't fur the wood up , learnt something there , loved the effects especially the nails going in !! Fantastic result , and lovely and strong now !!
Thanks buddy 😁 it did fur the wood just a bit, but a bit of a hand sand took care of that pretty quickly. Thanks for watching 👍
From up over, I've seen many of these in my sea faring community, all different shapes and sizes. The one in my living room was green in color, scrubbed up well, now functions to hold various items and double as a coffee table / foot stool. The cleats on the inside probably held a simple tote tray with basic tools. Great Job. Narragansett Bay
Greetings from down under 😁 thanks for sharing your story. Did you do the work your self ? Sounds like a very cool box. Please check out some of my other projects if you have time. This one was fun ruclips.net/video/W5dWY1hQB7g/видео.html
That paint looked impossible to shift. You did an incredible job. Loving the cheeky bag of screws in the ultrasonic bath: so damned clever. Excellent work and a gem uncovered.
Thank you Andy that's very kind of you. It still me 3 days to remove all the paint with the sandblaster but I think I would have used 3 or 4 tins of paint stripper otherwise. If your new to my channel please check out some of my other projects 👍
Kia Ora & Good Evening from North Shore, Auckland, New Zealand ...great video bro.
Cheers Peter. I have been to Auckland 👍
Please check out some of my other videos, this one is not one of my best
@@Austeration Born & Bred in Auckland ...
@@peterstevens6555 nice one 👍 I was there a few years after the sinking of the Rainbow. You would know all about that.
@@Austeration 0h! I joined Légion étrangère after the rainbow now back home but hopping to return to France soon …
@@peterstevens6555 that sounds pretty adventurous 👍
I made a replica of my dad’s old toolbox….you know the ones with the lid cut at a angle…painted black with a strap handle…..too heavy and impractical to use but I just like having it in my workshop!…..lovely job by the way 👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment Chris. I like the sound of the box you made. What do you use it for then. Or is it more of a show piece ?
@@Austeration I actually use it to store a small collection of vintage tools that I have….nothing fancy but they have sentimental value for me 👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
@@chriskythreotis4686 that's a great idea I like it a lot 👍👍👍 some of your dad's tools I'm guessing ?
Wow. Blastic media in the ultrasonic cleaner, like how did you even come up with that 😲.
Superb video, I really enjoyed it. Specially when all the part fell apart without needing the bigger hammer 🤣
Thanks buddy. Yes I used up all my imagination on this project. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the comment 👍
I have a similar box my father built and used as a boat builder. He painted the outside silver, not sure why. I’ve left it original and use it as a coffee table.
That is so cool 👍 I think that's what mine will become.

@@mr.shadestrains6033 thank you very much for watching. Please check out some of my other projects 👍
I like that you left the signs of aging on this box, especially the woodworm holes.
Thank you my friend. What would you have done with the numbers on the lid? Left them or tried to highlight them ?
I would leave them as they are, the whole case in the same style.@@Austeration
@@LTMS thank you. I just feel it's missing something maybe 👍
Great job, but the only thing I suggest you add that each single step with the materials added into to be mentioned
Thanks for watching glad you enjoyed it
Looks a lot better now. Great project. 🖖🏾 Hey which part of Australia are you in? I may be there in December!
Thank you. I'm in South Australia. Do you know where your heading yet ?
@@Austeration No not yet. We may opt for NZ and save AUS for another time. We really haven't decided yet.
@@Restorology NZ is beautiful, you will love it if you go there. Are you on Insta ? I might message you there if you are
@Austeration No I am not on IG yet. I'll go old school and send an email. 🙂
@@Restorology NP sounds good 👍
I wonder if the top number was the serial number of the box or the gentleman that used to carry it
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment John. Yes I wondered that also or if it was even an employee number. Not sure if they had those back then.
Класс 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you 👍👍👍👍👍😁
Здравствуйте, у меня к вам вопрос. Когда вы впервые посмотрели это видео, у вас были субтитры на русском или английском языке?
@@Austeration нет, небыло.

@@Austerationда, теперь субтитры есть на русском языке! Спасибо!
I imagine that not many of those are around anymore. Nice job! Glad you gave it back the respect and dignity it deserves. Cheers.

Great job! Very satisfying to see that old beat up box get a second life. I bet that wood gulped up that oil.
Thanks for watching BB. It certainly did gulp the oil up. I will wait a few days and give it some more. 👍
Love the rustic look of it 😊
Thanks Richard. Better to keep it that way than remove all the imperfections 👍
Bella cosi naturale
Thank you very much for watching. Natural looks so much better I agree😊
Nice sympathetic woodwork.. i've just tried hit bluing for the first time, its a great technique👍👍😀
Thank you for watching. It's very easy to do isn't it. Now your probably looking around at all the things you can use it on 😅
It looked better better black
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment Mark. That black took hours to remove it was so bad 👍
Great job..I like how you kept it old looking NICE...
Thank you Brian. I think the lid could have been better though.
Yes I would have left it the same also .....this looks amazing I love the look of natural wood ....but this is old weathered ...even better !! Fantastic work !! 👍👍
Thanks Robert, appreciate your comments. I'm glad you agree with my decision to leave the top. It was a tricky decision at the time. Really glad you like it. Comments like yours make projects like this so much more worth while 👍
Oh wow 😮 ,ill be back tonight WOW
That was different mate and I really enjoyed it. Great job as always
Thanks long horn👍. Yes something different. I thought it was going to be a quick project but I was wrong about that

Superbe restauration !!!
Quel abrasif utilisez vous dans la sableuse ?
👍👍👍
Thank you very much Pascal. I use Garnett in my blaster. It was so much easier than using the paint stripper but it still took me a few days to remove it all. 👍
That's pretty good, when you have to use a sandblaster to get paint off of wood. I wonder what that paint was.
Thanks you very much. It took forever to sandblast it all but scraping that paint of was so much worse. I was surprised when it turned yellow 👍
Might it have been creosote?
@@sciangear4782 I'm not sure. I thought that stuff soaked into the timber.
👏👏👏
Thank you 👍👍👍
great lookin box
Thank you and thanks very much for watching 👍
Good job
Thanks you 👍
Wow 👍👍👍

Good call on leaving the numbers original.
Thanks for watching Roger and leaving a comment. I was stuck on what to do with the numbers. Many options came to mind. I then thought If in doubt don't. Please check out some of my other projects when you have time 👍
@@Austeration I think sometimes we fall in the trap of using a tool simply because we have it, not because it necessarily makes sense. I am glad you didn't fall into that trap. and don't worry, I'm a subscriber!
