concepts: Crystal Castles, Crystal, Castles, Alice Glass, Ethan Kath, Alice, Glass, Ethan, Kath, EDM, Electronic, Punk, Music
Crystal Castles were the enigmatic electronic music duo who made waves and shook up the electronic music world. To the public they were a new age punk band creating some of the most interesting and forward thinking music at the time, hosting legendary live shows to crowds of adoring fans who appreciated the unapologetic music, but behind closed doors things were much worse than any of the fans could have possibly imagined.
2003 was the first time Alice Glass and Ethan Kath would become acquainted, with Alice being 15 years old and Kath 31. Alice had run away from her home in order to live in a squat community of punks under the name Vicki Vale where she started an all girl experimental punk band. In December of 2003, shortly after Alice had run from home, she met Kath and began producing music with him, and Crystal Castles was formed.
2006 was the year the duo would see their first release with a track titled “Alice practice”, a track that Kath claimed to have been a mic test for Alice that he accidentally recorded - a remarkable story for a track that soon became a big hit. This track got Crystal Castles on the map and scored them their first record deal. More singles followed and eventually the duo were on their way to a UK tour. They were gaining popularity faster than anybody had expected, and their first official self titled studio album saw its release in 2008.
Next came Crystal Castles II in 2010, followed by Crystal Castles III in 2012 completing a trilogy of critically acclaimed and incredibly well received albums. Then, in 2014, after such a meteoric rise to success, Alice left the Crystal Castles project, stating that it compromised her "sincerity, honesty, and empathy for others". She stated that the Crystal Castles project was over, and she intended to pursue a solo career - but the manager of Crystal Castles had other ideas, and told the public that Crystal Castles would continue without her.
After Alice’s departure, in 2016 Kath enlisted Edith Frances to join the band in Alice's place, continuing the project and releasing a fourth album titled Amnesty (I). The new duo performed a couple of sold out shows, and were planned to appear at SXSW, a concert organized to highlight womens income disparity. Alice expressed that she didn't think Kath was an appropriate person to headline a feminism centred event, and Crystal Castles were removed from the lineup.
After Alice’s departure from the band fans were confused and speculation was rampant. After a hugely successful three album run to leave the project seemed unthinkable. What could make her leave the project, and why did the project continue even in her absence? From 2014 - 2017 this question would loom over fans heads and speculation about her departure would ramp up until Alice bravely and publicly spoke out against Ethan Kath.
In a statement on her website she revealed information not known to the public about what Kath was like behind closed doors. She detailed how, in her first interactions with Kath, as a 15 year old girl she was supplied with alcohol and taken advantage of by the then 26 year old man. Kath would stalk her after this incident, waiting outside her high school and preying on her, and at that age she had been naive and perceived him as a local rockstar. He had even gone so far as to entirely fabricate the Alice practice story in order to downplay Alice's involvement in the creation of the track and highlight his own perceived achievement.
Kath would give Alice drugs and alcohol and take advantage of her regularly, remaining sober during these interactions. He began to pick at Alice's insecurities, and took control of her by using these against her. He controlled how much food she ate, restricted her access to social media, chose what clothes she would be allowed to wear and regularly read through her emails. He limited her access to interviews, being unhappy if he couldn't be in control of them himself. He even prevented her from having her own credit card, taking control of her finances and keeping her within his grasp. Kath also held onto Alices’ passport alongside controlling her finances, truly trapping her in the abusive cycle of his evil nature.
What’s more, in October of 2017 the former manager of Crystal Castles, James Sandom, claimed that the nature of Alice and Kaths relationship was “unclear”. Kath responded to this with screenshots of emails sent to him during his time as manager of the project, where Alice details the deranged and abusive things that Kath was doing, even with Sandom calling the nature of Kaths actions domestic abuse. (read some emails)
I wont read out the whole transcript but it is available on Alice Glass’s website and offers a lot more information than I will provide in this video.

@@prodLext yeah but that came out some time after they had formed and the Alice practice single was made. Plenty of time for grooming. It doesn’t matter if she was 20, those vocals were recorded when she was 15. Yeah it might be a bit much to say she was a child, but she definitely was not of legal age. And according to the account he even lied about how it was made, saying he stumbled upon the vocals when really, it appears, it was all planned. If he had to initially lie about how it came about, that most likely means he was quite aware of there being something wrong about it.

I was a music photographer working for STV (Scottish Television) covering Rockness in 2009.
Crystal Castles were the first act on the main stage, Friday afternoon.
The gig was done within 20 minutes. Alice drank a bottle of Jack Daniels in around 10 minutes.
Chaso then ensued. Alice ended up in the crowd and got in a fight and had to be escorted away, thus ending the opening act to a pretty chaotic weekend for me covering the event.
I still have a really good image of Alice, profile shot if her leaning forwards, mic in one hand, the half finished bottle of JD in the other. Wild look in her eyes.

When I saw them live near the end of her time in the group, she had just broken her leg or foot right before the show. They made an announcement about it and it seemed like the set was going to be cancelled. At the last moment they announced she was going on anyway, and she came to the stage in a cast, drinking a bottle of whiskey through the set. I was in a place in the club where I could see her exit the stage after the show and she was obviously in so much agony sitting there on the steps to the stage. I think he was maybe paranoid that she would talk about him taking drugs with her and sleeping with her when she was young to other people or use it as a weapon to blackmail him with exposing what happened and he would not have any control if she would threathen him with that (on top of just being a garpage human). Now I know why Crystal Castles music was dark and has so much agony. It pierces thru your heart and shakes the strongest mind. I listened to their music thruout the hardest time in my life. Alice is so strong and brave to escape that terrible situation.
Edit: As a person who had been manipulated for almost of childhood and teenage time, for some reason I can feed some strong bind from crystal castles. You may say that why Alice didn't ask for help from police, why she didn't just run away or fight back, then you need to know that the Stockholm syndrome is actually a thing. I hadn't known and denied that I was abused by my parents until I was escaped from my home by my friends. Until now my parents is still trying to interfere with my personal life. This video explained why I feel so related to crystal castes. Saying "shakes the strongest mind" maybe over-exaggerated, but as a person who had deal with a lot of hardship in life, the childhood trauma of being captived and abused will always be the thing I scared to deal with the most and crystal castles accidentally touched my deepest fear.

This seems BS... and the covert sexism against him?
So, the female singer left the band, then the band continued to do well... and 'then' she came out with these allegations, even when the band did a gig for feminism and women's wage disparity?
      Seriously, get a grip!
      It all seems very convenient.
Oh, and the 'double standards' President Macrons wife was his teacher, and knew him from 15!
And, I remember girls at school when I was a teenager and before, and you know women not being sexually aggressive 1950/60s!
I was sexually assaulted by a number of girls growing up.
I was sexually propositioned many times by girls, whilst growing up.
I'm really tired of this crass sexism of men are sexually rampant and predatory, and women are angels... it is absolutely not true!
Now, when women are just as ambition as men, we should be in a situation where women are being taken to court and prosecuted as much as men for sexually aggressive behaviour.
Instead the situation is so distorted now that a man can be abused, as I have been repeatedly, and then is persecuted.
Then again, I could be wrong about this situation, but the sequence of events... and the man who was accused had said the same, and I'd forgotten about this.
But when you spoke of this sequence of events?
I hate to break it to people, but women can be just as sexually promiscuous, aggressive as men!
And it is about time we grew up!
I genuine thought by this time in our society, we'd have as many or nearly as many prosecuted for sexual abuse as men.
The fact that society seems to think that your sexual organ has to 'stick out' for it to mean that can be sexually abusive or not... is so incredibly ignorant, irrational and stupid - it is beggar's belief!

There was apparently an issue with something on the stage, I assume the sound wasn't how they wanted it, although as an audience member, I couldn't tell that anything was wrong. After two songs, the drummer had a massive tantrum, threw his sticks, kicked his drums and just stormed off. Kath remained and essentially did a DJ set.
I later saw them hanging around near me during a DJ set (in a different part of the festival). Mira and Helen from Ladytron were doing the set (which was really fun btw). Kath and the drummer stayed for one song, not looking impressed, and then walked off.

Saw them at Hard music festival in socal 2009. Worst sound quality I have ever heard. It just sounded like muffled bass and a woman screaming into a microphone. You couldnt even tell it was music, just noise. To be fair there was a lot wrong going on at that festival and the fire marshalls shut down the whole show mid act forcing everyone to stay inside until a swat team arrived to kick us out due to overcrowding and people jumping the balconies. It was one hell of a trip. They ended up refunding every single person the $70 admission. I was really bummed though because Underworld was going to play that night and you never get to see them.

Bowie and iggy fucked the same 14 year old. Miles Davis beat his wife. John Lennon actually didn't but he did slap her once and was psycho controlling over Cynthia may and yoko. Steven Tyler and nugent both imprisoned and raped (statutory) minors. Afrika bambaataa was an active child molester .

      Hello
Something I have been in search for quite sometime is a connection with somebody that goes beyond vanity. It's very hard to do in this day and age. People can be, somewhat very superficial.
On my quest to achieve this I have learnt a lot about human nature. It seems to me that those who are not given traits such as beauty or being wealthy are some of the nicest, kindest and generous people.
While the "gorgeous" and well off seem to be the most arrogant and greedy people out there. Of course that's not to say there aren't beautiful kind people out there.
I've been in the process of change for a while now and I have made some decent changes. It's great seeing yourself level up.
I saw your profile and it intrigued me. I wanted to learn more about who you are and what type of path you would like on in life.
      Can we talk?
