    After using MBPs for years, I realized that 1)I don't need the portability and a cheap Win machine or tablet covers that for me, 2) I can't work on a small screen (anything under 27 is small now), and 3) I wasn't using the laptop keyboard anyway because I always plugged in extended keyboard and (non-Apple!) mouse. The MacStudio makes so much more sense for my workflows than any MBP.

      In the same boat. The base model is more than enough for me. But I’ve owned a MacBook since 2010 so all I know is portability. Last year I used the MacBook the LEAST I ever have since buying an intel iMac. So part of me thinks I won’t need the portability. The other part of me knows I frequently traveled before COVID…. So… 😭

      I was looking at the MBP then realized that every laptop that I have ever owned (2) has been used in clamshell mode connected to a 37" or larger monitor or TV. I went with the studio.

    For me, an appropriately configured Mac Studio and base Macbook Air is the ideal setup. A heavy/large MBP is worst of all worlds.

    • @DrewAllegre
      @DrewAllegre 2 года назад +2

      That's what is so great about the 14" MBP for many people. It strikes a balance and does it all in one device for many people. Similar performance to the 16" model in same basic form factor as the previous 13".

    • @garfieldirwin
      @garfieldirwin 2 года назад +5

      @@DrewAllegre No doubt it comes down to how much work you do on the fly. I spend 90% of my time at the desk so prefer to have an optimized desktop setup and am willing to suffer a little more when on the road. Trying to configure a workstation around a laptop -- no matter how powerful -- is an exercise in compromise IMO.

    • @brucekennedy5274
      @brucekennedy5274 2 года назад +2

      Same. I want the most power I can afford on the desk, and a light cheap portable as a ‘nice to have’ extra option for the occasional bit of work on the go at a pinch.

    • @Ken-dm5xt
      @Ken-dm5xt 2 года назад +2

      I agree. I’ve been an MBP guy for years and it’s docked on my desk 90% of the time. When I do take it out I’d just be using it for light stuff like web browsing and research.
      Sometimes I forget that I’m also paying extra for the portability, the nice display and keyboard. And I don’t think I’m making my money’s worth on these features.
      I might go for the base Mac Studio and base MacBook Air to cover any portable work.

    Trading in my M1 Mac mini for an M1 Max Mac Studio. The order should be arriving in early April. The M1 Mac mini is nice, but not enough power for me and I don't even do video/photo editing or any gaming on it. Yes, it's fast and silent, but 16GB of RAM severely limits me and I consider myself a casual user.

  • @bernios3446
    @bernios3446 2 года назад +3

    I'm quite torn between... I feel I absolutely do NOT need the processing power of the M1 max, however, I am tired of being short of ports like already with my current 2017 iMac 5k, and the constant need to unplug, replug, something that would be even worse with an M1 Mac Mini. So for getting a computer that can last for 5 years, probably even longer, an M1max + 32GB + 1 or 2GB of SSD with studio display and the generous number of ports that both come with is probably a better solution than a minimalist Mac Mini or even a Macbook Air M1.

    The Mac Studio is a power user's desktop machine. The M1Max MacBook Pro's are power user machines for road warriors and those who value portability. Any machine with an M1Max or M1Ultra is going to be meant for people who will use all that computing power to make real money. Those machines are built to pay for themselves, but only if you have work that can use them to generate revenue. For those who are not constantly editing video (or sound, or animation, or CAD) in industrial workflows, and M1Pro might be more than enough power for the money. If you're doing other office tasks on a daily basis and only occasionally working with video/sound/animation/CAD, an M1Pro machine is much more reasonable. The big question becomes: will the M2 bridge the gap between the M1 and the M1Pro? Will we see an M1Pro Mac Mini or 24-inch iMac? Or will we see an M2 in these machines that makes them better "prosumer" machines? Apple hasn't really responded yet to bridge that gap for the "prosumer" space. If an M1 MacBook Air, Mac Mini, iMac or 13-inch MacBook Pro isn't enough power for you, but the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro's are too big of a leap, Apple still has a big, gaping hole in its market to fill there. Will M2 releases fill this hole? We'll have to wait and see...

    Thank you for your channel, always interesting and informing to see your videos. Regarding the question you ask, then I'm planning to get a MacBook Pro 16" with the 32GB GPU Core, 2Tb disk and max out the Unified Memory, that is up to 64GB. However, if the project I'm start working on goes well, then I will probably get a MacStudio, maxed out except for the HD (2TB there also). With it I will get at least two 4K displays. I´m not sure if I will chose the Studio display, especially if I can get the same quality for half the price elsewhere.

This Apple Silicon transition is turning out to be quite a game changer. Though I don't expect to be a customer, at least not an early adopter, I'm quite intrigued with what they do with their VR Headset.

    I'm in no hurry to order but maybe towards the end of the year, have to wait for more music software to become Monterey compatible and M1 compatible. One thing I need to check into is another discussion on the new Mini Studio storage options was say the Apple prices have dropped. That the cost of Apple's internal storage is inline with the cost of similar external SSD storage. If that is true then I'll go for Apples internal storage for better throughput and less desktop cable clutter.

    I would like to get some suggestions for mac studio:
    Which one is better,
    1. getting 1 TB SSD rather than the 500+GB base SSD
    2. getting the 500+GB base SSD then get an external HDD like QNAP TR-002.
    The cost of 1 TB SSD is similar to an external HDD 6TB seagate so I wonder if more internal SSD can affect the speed and performance of the device or its just for storage purposes?

    • @jarredbaca8112
      @jarredbaca8112 Год назад

      depends on the speed of the storage you need. The 6tb will be incredibly slow compared to the 500 SSD that the mac comes equipped with. If you're just storing sheer files and photos you'll be ok! But video files and large projects you should steer clear of those drives, you'll want a faster speed for those things.

    I’m holding out for M3 Max 14” MBP which will probably be as fast as the M1 Ultra since it will be shrunk on the 3nm process and cost half as much. My Intel Macs should last that long. 128GB RAM and 8TB SSD will be cheaper by then and it will last me forever. They’ll probably ditch the notch by then and have the cutout like the iPhone 14 Pro is rumored to have.

    I’m holding out for a 24 inch Apple Studio Display, ideally with the same 4.5K resolution as the year-old 24 inch iMac. But I’d settle for 4K if the price were significantly under $1,000. My 16 inch M1 Pro MBP is all I truly NEED right now, but I might be tempted to finally replace my 2006-vintage Mac mini with an M1 Pro or M2 Pro model if the price were right. I prefer desktops to laptops when not traveling, so this MacStudio hits the sweet spot, I think. I do think 32 GB is better for me even though I can make do with 16GB most of the time. I do love the display and sound on the Macbook Pro, so I look forward to traveling with it. I also have a M1 Mac Mini but I'm going to sell it off. Given all the comments they threw at the realease event, the Mac Pro is in the works, it's bound to use an even more performant variant of the M1 family, thus Mac Studio's performance crown may be short-lived... And that thing needs to be released first for the M1 family migration completion in terms of the products stack. So I'd venture we might see Ultra Pro ;) this summer or autumn, before Apple decides to revitalise the lower end of the spectrum again. They might need to do this in order to gain all the pro-sumers on-board before those users decide to switch to Zen3/Zen3+/Zen3-3D ThrearipperPro and AdlerLake/SapphireRapids HEDT product stacks... as such, Studio might be just an appetizer, a pretty expensive one at that. At least Macbook Pro gives you power/performance in a moblie format factor, thus making it better choice. Had the Studio been priced lower, the story would've been different, but with Ultra costing roughly close to 10x the base M1 Mini, I'm wondering whether a compute cluster built out of such 10 machines wouldn't be better for the workloads Ultra-powered Studio is supposed to tackle "alone".
