As stated above, mostly everyone has served a Dark Master.
The only difference is that Astarion doesn't care about evil, because he actually enjoys evil. He desires dark power, while the reasons for the others are very different, and they know very well that Tav is making a mistake, unlike Astarion.

Minthara is disappointed if you decline the slayer form, but also disappointed if you promise yourself to Bhaal.
I think Minthara had a different set of writers who have different understandings of her.

@rudy3418 I believe that Minthara was originally going to be a boring evil companion that only cared for power, but eventually evolved into the story of a woman who desperately needs stability but could only find it through God's who never meant to save her.

Lae'zel is the most unabashedly truthful person in the entire game, to the point that she doesn't understand the concept of compliments because she only speaks highly of those who truly impress her, therefore they're truths and not compliments. With that in mind, I find it incredibly endearing that she is very loud and affirmative about not leaving your side while also being extremely vocal about not approving of your choice. She'll follow you anywhere, even if she thinks your choices are stupid and damnable. Except if you become a wretched ghaik. She would not love you if you were a worm.
Edit: Just found out that Lae'zel will, in fact, love you if you were a worm. Best girl.

I think I also just generally have a thing for women that aren't conventionally likeable, because I was debating on romancing her even before I knew she had a soft spot 😂
Regardless, I'm still chopping away at the game slowly. I have 250+ hours, but I haven't finished the game yet since restarting my OG save for Lae'zel and having two other saves for Shadowheart and Karlach 😂

I kind of understand though. He says it at some point after this too, that he knows how it feels to be a controlled pawn and that it isn’t you anymore. He knows there is no fighting this and he’s going to love you until he cannot stay with you anymore. And after that, he’ll remember you forever.. it’s so sad but also so understanding and loving 😭

Damn, Lae'zel is a (surprisingly) loyal friend/lover. She clearly hates your decision to serve Bhaal, but as she says, she can't/won't bring herself to fight someone she cares about.
Why is that surprising? She has shown always that she is loyal to a fault and would die for those she pledges herself to.

As far as I know she only turns on vlakith *after* vlakith tries to have her killed, alongside with the whole party. And even then she has to take a while to think about it after, and in the moment she boils it down to "no these are traitors and this is a test"

It's just the whole gang rallied together to bring Durge back from past the point of no return with Gale and Karlach leading the charge and Astarion there because deep down he knows they're right but if anyone asks, he's here for the snacks and juicy drama

Kudos to Wyll-he’s the only companion with the spine to put an evil durge down once he realizes what they’ve become. Everyone else is blind fr, they’ll just end up as thralls
pfft, Kudos to the guy who sold his soul to a devil, and per his own words 'never once regretted it', and then acts like everyone else should have an easy time of making the right call? Kudos to the guy that expects Durge to risk his life constantly for people who are too afraid to fight for their own damn lives, but then if he cracks against a foe that no amount of skill/cunning/strength would make him capable of walking away from (no one knows that Withers would have stepped in, if Durge doesn't reject Bhaal), well he should have just been ready to be tortured and die I guess.
That is why Astarion is right, heroes are the problem. It's okay to be afraid for your life, and act out of fear IF AND ONLY IF the hero decides you are someone that is worthy of compassion. Other people in the same or worse circumstances the hero doesn't decide is worthy can just go screw themselves.

But that's not Tav, that's Dark Urge, they're not the same. Tav is just a headcanon, self insert character. Dark Urge has story. He tied to the main plot, unlike Tav.

No one should be able to say with a straight face that it suddenly became wrong to kill those spawn just because someone managed to get something good out of what needed to happen anyway. When you really think about the non-ascension choices, killing the spawn is the most morally correct option available to the player. We aren't actually given the most morally correct option, but it makes sense because the circumstances in the game don't really allow the time for such a thing to be an available choice. So that said, if killing them is the right answer, what even are we talking about here? Why shouldn't the person who has risked so much helping to save the world, and who is also a victim, get something back when the cost of it is something that has to happen anyway? Is any one calling us evil when we loot corpses of people we had to kill because the absolute took control over them? Some of them are just as innocent as the spawn, how dare we benefit from them having to be killed?
The truth is, someone on the team was just a little too obsessed with forcing a 'cycle of abuse' angle, and then used manipulation to try to convince players this is an evil choice, so that they could smoke and mirror us into thinking he is 'just like Cazador', when nothing could be further from the truth, objectively speaking. This garners support for their obviously flawed decision to have Tav/Durge react to Astarion the way they do in the kiss scenes and some of the dialogue options regarding their relationship. Fortunately/unfortunately, many of us see through it.
@@saribeepo.o5111 To be clear, the ritual does modify his soul and damns him to the lower planes. It also makes him super fucking powerful and when paired with the rest of his personality he kinda is a bit of an asshole if you get on his nerves because he thinks himself superior (to which I must say, fuck around with Bhaal's Chosen, and find out what happens).
Depending on your moral framework, Ascending Astarion might be a moral imperative. However, without a doubt in the eyes of the Gods, it is an evil act that draws upon the infernal powers of Mephistopheles, which *will* have ramifications in the afterlife. So I guess you just have to ask yourself, is improved immortality worth being conscripted into the Blood War when you reach your final death?

@@aikonokaze Its a little irritating, because almost everybody in act 1 but wyll, karlach and gale are disappointed when you do any good deeds, but on a evil run there isn't enough companions to stand by your decisions.
Possibly vlaakith loyalist Lae'zel, shar shadowheart, and astarion, minthara, but the others have so much potential to go evil and they didnt utilise that.
Imagine fueled by hate karlach, or wyll mad after the death of his dad turning evil.. or power hungry gale up to 10 turning into a lich.

The thing is that once you accept Bhaal heritage, you can't go back. You can eventually betray him in the end, but you are going to get a fate worse than death, being a mindless killing machine.

The only ones that really make sense to me is Wyll being willing to fight you, and Astarion's reactions. The rest scream "Well, we can't have your entire party leave and fight you I guess." so everyone else has these limp "HOW DARE YOU EMBRACE BHAAL but i guess i'll stick around and help kill two of the greatest heroes in faerun and help you condemn the world."
It’s almost sad if you go on like this and defy Bhaal at the end.
Almost like how their faith in you wasn’t misplaced, that accepting Bhaal was just a means to an end in order to save everyone.
But that goodness comes at a price, bittersweet that being the person they hope you are means you have to die. Either by your own hand, or being put down as a rampaging Bhaalspawn.

Oh hell yes. Jaheria died in my playthrough but from early on I thought there was going to be a moment where my companions turned on me. But Jaheria died at Last Light so they never did. I thought it was going to be me, Astarion and MAYBE Gale vs everyone. I was so surprised a situation like this never triggered.
I'm replaying Durge now, and this time it's with Party Limit Begone (which means I should be able to keep Jaheria alive). If I have like 7 companions gang up on me at the same time, this is gonna be so damn cool.
The whole camp will gang up on you if you give into the Urge to kill your lover.
Weirdly that option never appeared for me even though I romanced someone.
If you kill Isobel then you don’t get the lover kill scene, so nobody confronts you to this extent except for Jaheria as included in the clip. Nobody even cares when I go around murdering randos for the Bhaal rp of it all.
@@galaxychar if you kill Isobel pre gauntlet of Shar you won’t get the lover kill scene, you can spare Isobel the first time you meet her at last light, progress the game up until the Nightsong which should give you the lover scene during a rest between meeting Isobel and freeing Nightsong, after you free Nightsong you can immediately head back to last light and kill Isobel which will give you all the resist scenes, allow you to save most of last light, mostly avoid pissing off your party and give you the Slayer all in one go, with virtually no downsides to boot

I did everything as evil as I could with my Durge playthrough and I made shadowheart kill the nightsong and become Shar's chosen, and I'm not sure if it was here but she said something along the lines of "guess we both accepted our gods then"

In a game with such strong theme about cycle of abuse, it’s sad to see Gale, SH, Karlach and Astarion still clutching to evil!Durgre.

They make Bhaal too much of a madman. Chaotic Evil does not mean no rational thought. He is actually quite calculating. His worshippers are assassins. The ritual mutilation would not be his stYle. Systematic hunting and killing yes. Murdering a kid he would see as beneath him. (Not out of the question mind you) just beneath.
That's why Orin was considered lesser that your Dark Urge, she looked for beauty in her kills when Bhaal doesn't value that.

It’s only presented that way because of Orin, who is by everyone’s account a pretty shit strategist and only got to where she is by stabbing Dark Urge in the back.
The Absolute plot cooked up by Durge and Gortash was genius and would have succeeded if Orin hadn’t thrown a tantrum and gave Bhaal’s greatest creation amnesia.
@@TheGryfonclaw she killed her mother as a child and somehow became a shapeshifter. I never did understand the doppelgänger connection to Bhaal. It was all through the first game. I wish they had kept bastard swords in fifth ed. Balduran is canonically said to have carried a bastard sword not a long blade or a great sword. In BG1 its a gold bastard sword specifically good for lycanthropes. Red Dragons are chaotic evil by nature yet incredibly calculating. Another thing i hated in fifth ed. the bias, on good vers evil. They used to be dead even. Good aligned characters and organizations used to rely on cooperation to win.
Eh nothings perfect, Larian did far more justice to D&D than WOKE on the Coke has for the last decade.

That said Withers does point out that rendering many people soulless is counter productive for a god trying to regain their former power. Canonically the dead three are less than half their pre “time of troubles” power. They are on par with Finder now for crying out loud. A freaking bard with like 2 priests and six petitioners.

I like playing Dark Urge cuz it plays into the Theme of BG3 that we are more then our past.
I notice there's a bug theme in the Characters of this game.
That some of them have done unspeakable things or bad things or stupid things for someone they cared about in the past or thought they cared about.
That we can be more then the sum of our parts.

I'd like to point out that if you pay attention to DUrge's expressions, they seem to be moved the most by Shadowheart and Karlach. Karlach's appeal especially seems to make the DUrge show genuine pained regret on her face, like she so badly wants to change her mind and resist.

I understand that this was due to gameplay reasons for you not to lose your party, but I cannot see Will, Karlach and Gale joining you as much as it hurts them. Asterion would join you, and Laezel and SH if you help them against their gods I believe too, but still
Part of what I feel the game did worse than BG2. Not only would you have your companions leave your party if they disagreed with you, there were multiple combinations of companions that would try to kill each other if in the party together!
I played Dark Urge and did most of the urge decisions but I did kill Jaheira, is this the dialogue if Jaheira joins you but you decide to follow Bhaal?
Wyll will actually leave you, as for Karlach and Gale it's definitely sad they stick around, but considering their past and the RS you must have with them at this point it makes sense that they would try their best to fix you, somehow, refusing to give up hope.
@@Barricader4697I did every durge complusion except for killing Minthara, and yep. Basically you have to convince her you didn’t kill Isobel if you do, recruit her and then no matter what she confronts you after the temple when you agree to be sworn to Bhaal. From my understanding if Minsc is also recruited he is there aswell.

I love Gale so much. Yet in this case Astarion is goals.
i absolutely loved karlach from this line on, because minc, jaheira and her were my only compamions. When she and minsc left me that really hurt (they tried to kill me later). Karlach later also left me before the final battle aftwr killing gortash (but that was relatable), so i stood alone with the mindflayer also as a mindflayer and killed the elderbrain just to become a mindless bahlspuppy and kill everyone a bit later
Funny I played a durge was evil as hell accepted bhaal into my heart etc.. and i didnt get any response from Wyll, LaeZel or astarion it was another day at the office for them. No clue on anyone else they all died lol
