      Funny meta aspect to that...Chris saw these in reverse.
      We got this trailer showing how devastating Deathwing was. Then in game, we just had him fly around and burn stuff here and there once in a while.
      Then a year later, obviously nothing much had progressed in terms of Deathwing's rage destroying the world because it was all done at the expansion launch. FFXIV releases their final video to coincide with 1.0 shutdown and I remember MMO-Champion and the main WoW forums flipping out that Bahamut just destroyed more in 3 minutes than Deathwing had in a full year.
      While 1.0 was such a horrible game, Yoshida certainly left an impact, even on the competition's player base, with that cinematic.

    Correction For you:
    Cataclysm was released on Dec 7 2010.

    Cataclysm was first.

    • @yoJawn
      @yoJawn 3 года назад +23

      In terms of film, yes, Smaug came after this. Technically Smaug made his debut in storytelling in 1937 though. Surely Mr. Tolkien's work influenced more than we even think.

    • @SaturnGrl
      @SaturnGrl 3 года назад +17

      @@uncensored008 Aside from his descent into madness (by the Old Gods, Smaug went mad with Greed), there really is no similarity to Smaug with it comes to Neltharion (Deathwing). Warcraft mostly drew it inspiration from D&D, H.P. Lovecraft, and a few other fantasy/Sci Fi inspirations. Neltharion was the lord of the Black Dragon Flight, and the Aspect of the Earth among his brethren. But we don't see Neltharion sitting on a bed of coveted gold stolen from a kingdom of dwarves. After being driven mad by the old gods, he became the aspect of death, who sought destruction and ruin all over the world. If anything, Neltharion had more similarities to Tetsuo from the film, "Akira" near his end. lol
      Smaug, himself, was not a dragon clad in armor (although he boasted about natural armor/skin), with his body being rendered apart from the inside out by corrupted magma and fire from within. Smaug was simply described by Tolkien as a reddish-gold dragon with big bat-like wings and sharp teeth and claws. On his belly was a crusty coating of old treasure that's stuck to him like an extra set of scales. he was a very...decorated but fierce red dragon.
      So not too much similar between them. There are many dragons from old stories written, so we can't just default to Smaug for the inspiration for modern day dragon characters.

    Deathwing is one of the Dragon Aspects, a council of old dragons that have extensive powers over the world. He betrayed the other ones at some point, as he was influenced by eldritch creatures and went progressively insane. They created the Dragon Soul, an artifact that is destructive to dragons. It slowly tore him apart as he coveted it, unwilling to let it go to keep this power for himself. He had to be forged back together to not be a blobbering mass of wobbling fillet and spare ribs. It took a grand alliance of heroes, adventurers and the other Aspects to bring him down for good.

    Lore Time:
    - The dragon is called Neltharian the earth warder. Neltharion was the dragon aspect of the earth and the deep places of Azeroth. Along with his fellow aspects, Alexstrasza, Ysera, Nozdormu, and Malygos, he was created and given power by the Titans so he could watch over Azeroth.
    - Long time ago he was corrupted by the old gods (Namely Yogg Saron), became mad and tried to undo the world as Deathwing. He was defeated and his body was almost torn apart.
    - He spent hundreds of years recovering and cultists of the twilight hammer clan were rebuilding him by infusing armor plates to his body just to keep it together.
    - When he regained his powers he "woke up" and unleashed his fury and hatred upon Azeroth. He is so powerful and his wings have so much down force he actually tore the world apart and changed the scenery.
    -His ultimate goal was to bring the hour of twilight: the fulfillment of a chain of events instigated by the Old Gods many eons ago. It is prophesied as the moment when the Old Gods will finally be freed from their ancient prisons and will return to end all life on Azeroth.
    - It took the combined forces of both factions, the dragon soul (an artifact created by deathwing himself long time ago) and the other aspects to put him down.
    We actually had to fight him in 2 loooooooooooong fights (he was the final and second to last boss in his raid) and he actually was one of the toughest bosses in WoW.

      Pretty much this. People meme on Cataclysm now, but it was pretty epic at the time, despite systemic gameplay flaws that have continued to plague the game since. This cinematic is loaded with imagery that was familiar to the playerbase, places they had traveled through in-game since the original release, and watching them being torn apart was equal parts awesome and tragic - many of the scars left in Deathwing's wake remain to this day.
      The tidal wave you see lands on Booty Bay, nearly destroying parts of the settlement and splitting the ground in the jungles of Stranglethorn Vale.
      The flood you see washing over cliffs continues on to fill Thousand Needles, a dry, rocky canyon that has now become an immense lake.
      The 'bridge' Deathwing breaks with his roar is actually a dock at the village of Auberdine, which was utterly destroyed in his wake, the residents having since relocated to a new village to the north along the shore.

    The thing about the 2 Blizzard logos : the second one is the true intended logo that is integrated in the cinematic because in certain situations they will have the trailer play without the first logo (like when they do the big reveal of the cinematic, or when it plays inside the game, or any other situation where revealing that this is a Blizzard trailer is something that needs to be announced after the establishing shots of the video), while the first one is more like a media tag when the video is left standalone (like in this case, RUclips). I can't say they've always been 100% consistent with that practice over the years, but it's marketing decisions for sure.

    Back in the day, Blizzard expansion cinematics were more centered around introducing the bad guy of the expansion. With The Burning Crusade it was Illidan, with Wrath of the Lich King it was Arthas, and with Cataclysm it was Deathwing. However, with the cinematics beyond this one, they are a bit longer and are an actual scene having to do with the events during or leading up to what happens in the expansion.

    Deathwing has so much power he's literally falling apart and melting from within. He's in hiding because back in Warcraft 2: Beyond the Dark Portal's novel adaptation, Khadgar (a hero of the Alliance) ripped apart the metal plating that held him together, forcing him to retreat and spend decades having new plates forged and put on him while he recuperated.
    Cataclysm was a bold idea for its time: revitalize the original continents of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms by having Deathwing cause widespread destruction, while having some zones that were famously barren and desolate (like the Western and Eastern Plaguelands and, uh, Desolace) regrowing and developing new life to show the passage of time and the effect the players and factions like the Cenarion Circle (a druidic order) and Argent Dawn/Crusade (an order of primarily warriors, priests, and paladins fighting back seemingly-endless waves of undead in the ravaged remains of what used to be Lordaeron, one of the main human kingdoms in the setting, not to be confused with the Scarlet Crusade/Onslaught, a hostile faction of primarily warriors, priests, and paladins who fight the undead like the Argent Dawn/Crusade, but were driven mad over time and now attack anyone who isn't one of their own indiscriminately--and oftentimes turn on their own over the mere suspicion of being undead sympathizer).

    • @edschramm6757
      @edschramm6757 3 года назад

      i don't know that i would call it driven mad in the case of the Scarlet Crusade. their leadership was replaced with Dreadlords over time, so they were pushed further and further, slowly twisting their ideals. i believe Balnazzar specifically was the one who pulled that one off. though there may have been a second dreadlord in there somewhere too.

    Deathwing was so massive that fighting him in game consisted of a two part fight. First part was fighting on his back, trying to break off pieces of his armor, then the second part was basically fighting parts of him, claws/appendages, and effectually attacking just his head. Wasn't the best fight, mechanically, but it did give you a pretty good idea of how massive he was.

    To add on the lore already shared - each of the Dragon Aspects embodied a control over certain concept - Alextrasza was the Life-Binder, Nozdormu was the Timeless-One etc. Before he took up the name of Deathwing, his name was Neltharion the Earth-Warder. As an aspect of the land itself, he became corrupted due to Old Gods that were imprisoned deep within the planet's core whose whispers he could hear. In the same vein, whenever he felt pain as the armor was being stitched onto him, the land itself was being destroyed.

    This was a crazy expansion too--Blizz ripped their established world apart. So all those events we see in the cinematic, destroying everything, is reflected in the game. It permanently altered the landscapes that they'd had for years. I think overall it was a gutsy thing to do.
    There are good dragons in World of Warcraft too--and we work with them quite a lot. Deathwing, who was the head of the black dragonflight, had been corrupted. Most (but not all) of the black dragonflight had been corrupted, and some of the blue dragonflight as well.
    Deathwing was a hard boss to fight with some crazy mechanics. You had to try and break the armor while riding on his back, while he was trying to shake you off. If you didn't move quick enough, or moved the wrong way, you'd be dead instantaneously.

And you got most of the thing about him right: long ago, he was defeated and retreated to the depths of the earth. A really cool thing about blizzard's trailers is that they're not just a presentation, what happens in the trailer is actual story before the expansion starts so what happens in the trailer is reflected on the actual game. One example is here in the Cataclysm cinematic: in the end when Deathwing close on the towers of Stormwind and they melt below them, when you're actually in game you see those towers melted by the claws. Also the dam in Loch Modan that's destroyed in the cinematic is also destroyed in game.
    This has been happening since the Wrath of the Lich King trailer.

    so to a degree, yes, they put armor on him. but as much as it is to protect him, its also whats holding deathwing together : after he fell to N'zoth's corruption, he started breaking apart. so to hold himself together physically, he had plates put on. they just happen to also be made from one of the toughest metals on Azeroth.
    As for his size : the plates across his back - one of them is knocked off immediately prior to his first fight in his raid, "Spine of Deathwing". ONE segment is large enough for 25 players to fit on his back without overlapping (they do because it makes it easier to manage mechanics, but its possible). this guy is insanely large.

    For your info:
    Deathwing is a servant to the Old Gods (Think H.P. Lovecraftian beings) and has been so corrupted, that he mutated into in an almost unrecognizable form.
    His Elementium(I think) armor is keeping him in shape, pun intended.

    About the logos… I think the first appearance of the logo is more of a video game presentation. Logos are usually very prominent in games during splash screens. The second (more subdued) time is the actual “movie” one.

    You have to consider to, the harbor he destroyed after he breaks out of the mountain and the city he lands on are on opposite ends of the world with a massive ocean between them. Meaning that entire time he was leaving that gigantic wave of fire behind him covering a large part of the planet

  • @Lodestone7
    @Lodestone7 3 года назад

    So lots of people talking about the history.
    The raid was a scenario where you had a dozen stages where you ultimately had to get on an airship, go into 'hyperdrive', and chase him down. Luckily, he doesn't maneuver well.
    In the penultimate fight we airdrop onto his back are riding on him because he's as big as the airship. We attacked the plates on his back which would go flying off and then his corrupted blood would form blobs and attack. The entire party had to manage their position because he would lean to one side if too many people were there and everyone would get thrown off. Ultimately we do enough damage and he crashes into the Maelstrom for the final fight.
    In the final fight the players jump between five ledges and attack different parts of the dragon because he is otherwise so massive it's like attacking a city. The NPCs (Thrall and the Dragon Aspects) are busy charging the magic railgun so you're really delaying him more than softening him up. Ultimately Thrall fired the magic canon and Deathwing was vanquished. You may remember Thrall from his retirement on the farm in the Saurfang vs. Sylvanas cinematic.
    Some of the most interesting and original raiding I've seen anywhere.

    here's some background story for you, the Dragon you saw was originally Neltharion, Guardian of the Earth, the Black Dragonflight was in charge of protecting the whole of Azeroth. that changed when the Old Gods twisted Neltharion's mind and corrupted his body, that armor was grafted onto his flesh in order to help hold him together, as the Old God's corruption is slowly tearing him apart. now as "Deathwing" he seeks to destroy all that he was charged to protect, so that the Old Gods can lay claim to Azeroth, his emergence from Deepholm (center of the planet basically) caused a lot of damage in the process, much of the world changed that day.
    if you would love to know more, keep watching WoW stuff and i will do my best to educate you, may the light be with you.

    So lore stuff.
    This is Neltharian/ Deathwing. He's the aspect of earth, guardian. And was brainwashed by oldgods.
    During war of ancient event. He was defeated and he escaped and being doing stuff behind scene for 10000 years.
    He draw powers from oldgod Nzoth, and that power corrupt his body and already breaking him apart. Force him to use those armour to stay intact.
    In Cataclysm, he awakened and cause those destructions ( actually game world redesigned during cataclysm cause this in lore). His ultimate goal in cataclysm is to cause hour of twilight, a point where all light in world extinguish, sun will be blocked forever. So that oldgods will be back in power again.

After that i would suggest you watch the Legion - Alliance Broken Shore cinematic (and Horde version) + the 7.2 in game cinematic A found memento: Raising a King, these last 3 are in-game cinematics which will give you a little bit of background as to why did the trust between the Horde and Alliance broke down before the Battle of Azeroth cinematic and it will give you a little bit of background on the blonde King of the Alliance(Anduin) and the sword with the awesome orb(Shalamayne).

    Gotta say this is one of the best cinematics WoW has released. The amount of suspense and chills I get from Neltharion, The Earth-Warder (Deathwing) as he is showcased gets me to this day! I started WoW just before Cataclysm was released so this was my first expansion and Deathwing is my OG first WoW boss I killed! I was so hyped to get into WoW by watching this trailer! And I'm glad you were feeling the same way when you watched it! It's a great cinematic!

    It was great when he came out. He'd fly all over the game and if he passed over you he'd kill you and you'd get an achievement for dying to him. Even lower level chars it was a lot of fun. They also changed the entire world. What he destroyed in the trailer was destroyed in the game world. It was what they used to update the graphics.

    He's called Deathwing, I love your cinematic analysis. He got fucked up in the books over 20 years ago, he had Mithril ( if memory serves ) plated onto his skin, then he upgraded it to a newer type of metal. He's the aspect of Earth and as he says " the world heaves with my torment" because he has the power of earth. he razed 2 main cities. was my favorite expansion. Very Lovecraftian.

    I like how you brought up the lighting above Deathwing in that first shot of him while they're forging the armor onto him. I never noticed it before. That area where he had the armor put on him is called Deepholm and is actually the area underneath the Maelstrom you always see in the center of the world map. The colors they use in the cinematic are the same colors that are in that area in-game. You can actually go to the location where they put the armor on Deathwing in the game, but it looks a bit different since the camera angles tried to make it look like he's in a lava filled cave rather than a zone that is actually somewhat expansive comparatively. Even though it's still underground.

    his raid was actually fairly easy compared to the previous expansions last raid boss. although I may only think that because at this point I was much more experienced than I had been in WotLK. although, there were literally two boss fights that were him. the first of the two we had to fight corruptions on his back and get the armor off him. I believe this was the fight my guild found the hardest, because one of the tanks (me) had severe latency and just couldn't kite things well without losing aggro. and because of that latency, I also tended to get flung off the side when he barrel rolled.

    Blizzard from the beginning into the 2000's was a studio with personality and they showed it. Now I would say that it is more of a habit and their style. They show their logo up front and large like MCU, Lucas Arts, Fox, and the likes of Cinema. Trailers and cut scenes were held to a high standard in the company.

    This armour they put on him is to keep his body together since it's falling apart due to exposure to insanely powerful artifact called dragon soul he created himself (with the guidence of old golds) to obliterate demons....and everybody else. After using that artifact for the first time killing demons, mortals and even his fellow dragons he earned his name as a Deathwing the Destroyer. Neltharion the Earthwarder was no more.

    If I may make a suggestion, I'd like to see you react to The Thin Red Path from For Honor, it may not be long, nor an immensely animated thing, but I'd still love to hear your points on how the thing is shot. I personally find it extremely powerful for how little it is and I'd like to know from a pro's view if that strength in the cinematic comes solely from the amazing narration or the visuals, if not both.
    If anything any of For Honor's promotion cinematics would be interesting to hear you say what you think of them.
