      @@zexxy4983 Actually, Mists of Pandaria came out 3 years after the Kung Fu Panda movie. However, they have been an official part of the setting since the Warcraft 3 expansion from 2003, 5 years before the movie (which means likely before the concept of the movie was even marketed to animation studios).

  • @Farobette
    @Farobette 3 года назад +375

    As far as the idea for Pandas, they have been in the Warcraft universe looong before the first Kung Fu Panda movie came out, the first one being in Warcraft III, where you help Chen make his beer. This is later referenced in World of Warcraft Classic, through finding Chen's keg in the Barrens.
    Only difference why people keep connecting this to Kung Fu Panda, is that WoW actually had the story from the books ready up until Cataclysm(2010) and then it became progressive story. Otherwise they could've added Pandas(Pandaren) alot earlier. While alot of people were/still are against Pandas being in the game, the cinematography From Mists of Pandaria and on, hits a new high for Blizzard Entertainment. That can be clearly seen in the Overwatch shorts and the WoW Cinematics From 2012 and on~

      I think people also commonly believe Kung Fu Panda came first because getting the panda hero in WC3 wasn't a sure thing, so not everyone find it, whereas a movie doesn't have that problem. I can't remember off the top of my head, but didn't you need to get the secret level in the blood elf campaign and then you'd have the panda for the mission after?

      @sophiejones7727 3 года назад +17

      The idea of a Panda (an animal endemic to China) that does Kung Fu (a Chinese martial art) is not exactly original. It wasn’t new when Blizzard did it, nor when Kung Fu Panda did it. It’s a rather obvious idea.
      As indeed is the case for most of the Blizzard races (Draenei being the exception). Most of them are based on D&D. Shamanistic orcs, light and dark elves, savage trolls, tinker gnomes, capitalist goblins, Victorian werewolves: they didn’t invent any of this stuff. However, they constructed a unique lore that bears very little resemblance to any other franchise. Same thing with the Pandaren.

    Haven't seen this explained. Pandarens aren't just into balance for no reason. The island has an effect on Its occupants. Negative emotions gain physical forms and corrupt the land.
    The Lore is essentially the Pandarens trying to not have a massive war that would escalate that. There are also other threats that popped up.

    If you're paying attention, this cinematic is what it's like to play WoW, neatly explained in a 4 minute video. Every 2 years, we have an expansion. We go somewhere new (the opening minute or so). The Horde and Alliance are both there and fight for control of the new land to use against the other faction (the orc and human battling each other). Then someone steps in (in this case, the pandaren), and reminds us that bigger things are at stake. We can't waste time fighting each other, we have to work together to beat the Big Bad (TM) of the expansion (the human GIVING THE ORC A WEAPON and them fighting together against the pandaren). But, then after the Big Bad has been defeated, we have to go back to fighting each other. Anduin said it best in the "Lost Honor" cinematic: "I thought we were fighting for peace, but we're just...fighting."

    Its a great Cinematic, one of my favorites back when i still played the game and it was good.
    Fun fact, the incense burner the Orc picks up and Chen(the Panda) puts back, u can actually go to the location ingame where they fought and put the burner straight like Chen did, even gives u a achievement for it.
    Its a shame the game is so bad these days, way past its hayday, Wrath of the Lich King was the best expansion, but this one did a great job as well.

    A fun thing almost nobody talks about is that you can find this location in the game. It's exactly the same as you can see in the video, from the training grounds to the bridges & mountains. You can interact with the decorative hammer-thing that the orc breaks; it will fall and you'll get an achievement.

    5:35 you can find this wodden hammer in pandaria, straighten it like Chen (the pandaren) in the trailer and you will get a achievement :D
    There is a old Pandaran called Cho. He is a Lorewalker, a protector of the history of Pandaria. I absolutly adore this character, his wisdom and calmness. And the german voice for Cho is the same person who is the voice actor for the german voice of Anthony Hopkins and it fits so good.

    5:30 - What's funny is how the panda basically signaled that he wasn't taking them seriously. The orc had damaged a part of the bridge to have a weapon, and the panda was annoyed. He just slams the piece back into place before straightening it like an irritated sensei, and that sent a vibe all its own which made them realize that he wasn't trying. And, you could see the impact of that realization on their faces!

BUt for me it was the 1st Expansion that started from scratch for me (I started playing half way through Cata) The Panda race starting zone was/is a turtle swimming through the cosmos..so cool..but also I had my first new PC..so all the graphics were up full and that scenary was just STUNNING...many of the quests were hilarious..it was such a nice change from Cata which was all destruction and ruin ...MoP was really light hearted..until the end....a whole YEAR with no new content..and then we went into Warlords :(

    So, wow Pandas are way before Kunfu Panda story. They introduced in first ever Warcraft games back in 90s.
    So characters here are General Nazgrim (orc), General Tylor ( human), Chen Stormstrout (Panda).
    Pandaria story is very normal, horde and alliance discover this land of pandas, pandas join both races to achieve peace between them. Also both factions fight against problem in pandaria, ( cause one of wow old god's actually sealed in pandaria, it's too long to explain).
    Spoiler alert.
    both Tylor and Nazgrim dies and ressurected in story.
    Nazgrim is killed by players and he actually asked us to kill him ( long story), he was later ressurected by Bolvar as Deathknight.
    Tylor is killed by a necromancer ambushing his Garrison, killing everyone there. Tylor was ressurected as spectral being, we helped him to take revenge against the necromancer...... But we still don't know who's actually behind the ambush. Necromancer is just a pawn.

    The expansion was actually pretty controversial at the time of its announcement, because it was thought that Blizzard was capitalizing on the popularity of the first two Kung Fu Panda films by some. Pandaren, however, have been canon since Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne, in Rexxar's campaign (which was designed more as a dungeon-crawling ARPG as a test to see how well players would receive an RPG set in Warcraft). Rexxar met, and can potentially recruit, Chen Stormstout, a pandaren brewmaster (the same pandaren from this cinematic). They also had a lot of world-building in the tabletop RPG, and when the RPG was declared non-canon, some elements of it were brought back into canon in Mists of Pandaria.
    Interestingly, not only are pandaren much less controversial as a whole anymore (that dubious honor currently goes to the vulpera, a scrappy race of small, fox-people survivalists who have the same take-no-shit underdog vibe as the Horde of Warcraft 3), but Mists of Pandaria is regularly pointed to as one of the game's high points due to its class design, if not balance, and robust worldbuilding. It's one of the textbook examples of a product that ended up vindicated by history despite the volume and seeming quantity of naysayers.

    YES! 2nd best expac cinematic behind Wrath of the Lich King in my opinion.
    "Like Kung Fu Panda with Mortal Kombat" that is a great description lol
    The theme of this expansion, was very "The war between two old rivals spills over into a new land, involving those peoples." Humans and Orcs fight because they hate each other, they have border friction, they fight for resources. Pandaren fight to survive, to "bring harmony", if there is evil they fight it, but they don't continue fighting just for domination or conquest, like the Orcs used to.

  • @LukasLLM
    @LukasLLM 3 года назад

    Mists of Pandaria (MOP) was a very.. controversial expansion.
    Many people really didn't like the Asian theme for Warcraft, and the Pandas that have a super cute player model and cute race passives (eg "Bounce: Reduce fall damage by 50%"), and people feared that they did this expansion to cater to the chinese market (And I think it worked?). Everything was colorful, from an otherwise very gloomy world. New race were cute and mostly innocent, looked a lot like Kung Fu Panda (as you mentioned), and also introduced the newest class: Monk, as well as introducing a Pokemon clone: Battle Pets.
    A lot of people were not ok with this.
    Despite the theme being questionable at best, the expansion was actually very good. The dungeons were good, the raids were great and classes were at their best, and there was lots for people to do. One of the raids (Throne of Thunder) is held as the best raid in the game, period by many people.
    So if you can get yourself to look past the theme, it was an excellent expansion

    Fun fact, the first pandaren appeared in Warcraft 3: The frozen throne in 2004, and the first kung fu panda movie came in 2008, so it was not a copy. I believe they couldn't put them in WoW until the 5th expansion because of some legal problems with china (they hold the rights to panda representation or something like that)

  • @Arxareon
    @Arxareon 3 года назад

    Mists of Pandaria was one of if not the best expansion so far. The story and gameplay content were both stellar. Some people didn't like the Pandaren and the asian art style (they are wrong) but it has been part of Warcraft's story since like 2002-3. They were actually planning to release Pandaren in 2007 with The Burning Crusade expansion but they decided not to. This gave the opportunity to explore their homeland in a fully fledged expansion around them later.
    This of course would place it in time way before Kung Fu Panda. This cinematic piece is most probably still uses inspirations from the animated movies - which it should cuz they are awesome.

    Funny thing is that Pandarians have been a part of Warcraft lore before Kung Fu Panda was in production. They started off as the annual April Fools Day joke then was liked enough they implemented Chen Stormstout (the pandarian in this cinematic) into a part of Warcraft 3. Also expansion for World of Warcraft take at least 2 years to make. Sadly because of this delay and Kung Fu Panda coming out shortly before Mists of Pandaria was announce as the next expansion, the biggest complaint from fan was they were only bringing pandas into WoW because of the movie's success and "pandas were added to the lore only because of Po from the movie" people ignoring or not knowing they had been in the lore before World of Warcraft came out. They even had/have a quest referencing Chen by name in WoW since day one, though only those on the Horde side can pick up the quest.
    As a extra bit of info, Chen though a pandarian was not born on Pandaria, he's from a group that left the island hundreds to thousands of years before the moment in this scene, he like the Alliance and Horde only just found this island, he however knows it's his people's ancestral home, he didn't appreciate them breaking pieces of his ancestral home thus his taking back the axe/hammer and putting it back into place and adjusting it properly with his staff (this place can be found in game too, where you can move it back into place as well)
    Mists is one of my favorite expansions still, even though it ended about 7 years ago.

    Mists of Pandaria is interesting since it was a good expansion, but a bunch of people stopped playing because Kung Fu Panda was fresh on everyone's minds and they felt like panda monks were too childish and... "casual"... of a direction for World of Warcraft to go down... I didn't play it much since that's when a lot of people I knew playing stopped for that reason and I've heard it from a bunch of other people...

    While there are many who accused Blizzard of stealing the idea from Kung Fu Panda, the Pandaren have been in Warcraft years before the movie came out. Ironically, the Pandaren actually started as an April Fools prank by Blizzard, but were was so popular with the fans that they included a Pandaren character in the expansion for Warcraft 3, specifically Chen Stormstout who happens to be the Pandaren in this very cinematic (as well as generic Pandaren heroes that both Alliance and Horde could hire).

  • @ArgKnoxville86
    @ArgKnoxville86 3 года назад

    So here is the thing. This trailer, alongside with this expansion was very badly recieved. Coming from such a serious expansion as "Cataclysm" as you have seen in the previous trailer. This was kind of a break neck change of tone.
    On top of it, this came out a couple years after the Kung Fu Panda movies, so it kinda ended up looking more like a game for that move than a trailer for a WoW game, even though Pandaren have existed in the Warcraft lore for very long time.
    So I would like to ask you, as a filmmaker, how could they have done things differently enough so that this wouldn't have happened. I am talking about the tone shift and the fact that this resembles SO much a Kung Fu Panda movie. Do you have any thoughts on what they could have done?

    A comment about the Harmony-aspect, Peace and balance.
    The island of Pandaria is where the heart of an Old God fell (Old Gods, think C'thulu & Co) as the Titans tried to rip them out from the planet.
    The Heart of Y'shaarj then seeped into the land and made it so that any powerful emotion could manifest itself as a Shaa, ranging from small enemies to massive creatures several storeys high! So over the eons, the Pandaren learned to keep their emotions in check. It is OK to feel anger, sadness and pride, but don't let it go overboard! So it is not just because of some religious or cultural belief, if things turn sour people die (and when we players arrive there with out battles between the two factions we cause a number of these Shaa to manifest).

  • @DmitriStormblood

    One thing I love from Pandaria is that the trailer really hid the main theme of the full expansion. Through the expac the quest lore was constantly emphasizing what each side thought was worth fighting for and realizing that the only thing worth fighting for is home and family(which culminates in the siege of orgrimmar after the orcs went full nazi on the horde). The Pandaren add in quite the unique perspective and the monk class was extremely powerful during the expac(it was then nerfed harshly in warlords and later legion to the point only windwalker spec was viable ungeared). It definitely was a fun and unique journey of self reflection which flew by many's head. Also the klaxxi have a whole classic 80s metal band thing going to add even more shenanigans, miss this expac.

    Mists of Pandaria was a controversial expansion. A lot of people, including me, noped out because it felt like Blizzard was out of ideas and just ripping off Kung Fu Panda, which was popular and new at the time. In retrospect though, I think most people agree this was a really good expansion. In terms of the gameplay especially, but also the beautiful continent they created. Nowadays you can choose any expansion's content to play through and fully level up a new character, and Pandaria is a popular choice because of how much it stands out in its overall presentation and tone. Personally I regret not giving it a chance when it was the current endgame.
