  • Update: The DIYaudio folks are taking pre-orders for their latest Amp Camp Amp kits till May 14th 6PM PST! You can order a standalone parts kit, or kits complete with the new stereo chassis or monoblocks! diyaudiostore....
    13:59 Update: around 14 minutes into the video, you see me getting the Karatherm insulator/thermal conductors ready for application. Make sure to take the brown backing material off the Keratherm! (I didn't.) If you don't peel it free, the heat sinks won't work so well, and you'll have to pull the amp apart to remove it, then put it back together like I did! -Patrick
    I've always wanted a pair o' full on audiophile grade Class A Monoblock amps... but who's got thousands of dollars to drop on an amp? Turns out Nelson Pass (legendary amp designer) loves DIY, and put together an easy to build amp for first timers. Called the Amp Camp Amp! We build it from a DIYaudio kit the video, and talk amp types... explaining Class A, B, A/B, and D. (It gets mildly nerdy.)
    Now I'm torn between enjoying this one, and building something even more powerful... you need sensitive speakers to get these 8W amps rocking.
    Hope you enjoy the build, and thank you for making TekThing possible!

    Just wanted to mention that the backing should be removed from the insulator pads. Also some people worry the insulators need grease and that's not required-in fact works worse.

    The PSU is 24V 5A. That means if you leave this amp on 16 hours a day at 6-12 cents per kW it will cost you $42-85 dollars a year to power.
    Might be a good idea to use a timer for the hours you know you aren't going to use it just in case you forget to turn it off.

    OMG, to find a women who values resistor color codes.
    I can't even find one who doesn't treat my tech hobbies like a booger collection.

    This guy hooked me when he started to talk about Nelson Pass! I cant afford his stuff but i have two Adcom amplifiers designed by him that are class AB and they sound great!

    Hi,
    Thanks for the video! Not sure I will get a response but this video deserves a follow up as these amps for up to 1.6 monos now and even better. I still love the form factor of these compact class a amps. Their is a reason why folks are still responding to this video from years ago. These are really good amps! The newest monos are more powerful and can power more of a variety of speakers. I would love to see more videos to diy audio projects...more of them specific to pass labs projects😀 thanks you for the video!

    It might be clearer to explain that a Class A amp is running at full power all of the time. Any juice that doesn't get used for music gets turned into heat. In fact, the louder the music is the cooler the amp runs.

    I hate that you fast forward through all the parts I specifically came here to figure out!
    Glad you have the video in the first place though :)

    I think this is awesome. I think more of the old/older Patreon Build videos should be mas public from time to time. That way people could see what they are missing and maybe make them want to donate even though they don't need to and it optional.

    Looks like I have my next project! This looks like so much fun. I was looking at the pre order before the video was done.

    Was watching a show years ago. this guy built a home theater where the Amps needed there own special room with it's own air conditioner. The basement was turned into a giant tuned chamber for the subwoofer ports in the home theater above. And the electric company had to add a new power line into the house from the street as the normal home power wiring could not handle the current needed to run this. Th important part he wasn't married and did not have girlfriend to interfere with his home theater plans. He had goals but I think he had the wrong goals.

    You really need to read so long and thanks for all the fish. I hope that’s been taken care of by now.

    Class D introduces a very high frequency noise - that has to then be filtered out of the signal. And filters are very difficult to do right.

    I know it's been a while since this went up, but you left the brown backing on the thermal pads. If someone is still using this amp you should go back in and remove that backing, your transistors will thank you.

    • @Tekthing

      It pulled the amp apart and removed it about 72 hours after the DIYAudio crew saw this video and emailed me to say "Take the backing off the thermal pads." -Patrick

    it would be cool thing that after someone set pot to get 10V the value of pot is them measured in ohms and given as data so it can be set even more easily before soldering and powering amp?

    You didn't put the thermal pad on correctly and forgot to peel the other side of it, other then that, great video.

    to make this thing work, you need a PRE AMP. pls ask Nelson what matches best, and why NOT, a kit for matching pre amp....????

    • @Dougie085
      @Dougie085 6 лет назад +1

      You can use a solid DAC that has built in Volume control as a pre-amp. Generally that's the best way unless you really need a pre-amp.

    • @Tekthing
      @Tekthing  6 лет назад +3

      You really don't need a standalone preamp, unless you're playing vinyl. I've used everything from my phone, to thge output from a PC's onboard audio, Audioquest's Dragonfly USB DAC, to an iFi Audio Black Label... there are several DIY preamp builds on DIYaudio you can check out, though!

    This can be done by someone who knows how to solder and follow a few simple instructions, without any knowledge of what or why.
    So when reasoning out what a pair of Class A monoblock amps should cost when what's missing is a Chinese dude that works for $5/day to put the thing together, what would these amps cost fully assembled?

    Actually.....LED's don't have positive and negative. It's anode and cathode. The reason it matters how you hook it up is because it is a diode and there for energy can only flow through it one direction.

    • @Tekthing
      @Tekthing  6 лет назад +1

      Thank you for the well actually (lol). I'm actually faily versed in the world of LEDs (see the ruclips.net/user/hak5 playlist on Arduino builds), though we may have used the incorrect wording. - shannon

      @Dougie085 6 лет назад

      Yeah I was just adding a bit of info :) Sadly most people don't really look into how components actually work very often.

    • @dunzerkug
      @dunzerkug 6 лет назад

      Energy can definitely flow both ways in a diode. That's kind of the entire use case for Zener diodes.
