I appreciate those providing golf instruction and other golf related things (and tennis, cars, watches...lol). Recently I viewed a few videos from Mike, Shaun and Athletic Motion Golf. I'm familiar with many of the active superstars in their competitive market. One thing I like in particular is their speech rhythm and tone while conveying and addressing technical questions I ponder. I hope they keep spreading the knowledge, and doing it well . Thanks, Matt from Minnesota with the golf itch.
Binge watched all your videos a year ago, now I'm filming myself coming back to each one for touch ups. I think I was unconsciously overcocking both wrists trying to "lock out" for stability or something, now everything suddenly feels amazing and free! I can do the drill where you just leave the right hand laying open on the side of the club, could never do that before and now I know why... brilliant thank you!
That comment at 7:30 actually ripped my heart out “the worst thing you can do is go low and slow” lol…. Been hearing this my whole life wtf. Golf is a trip, thank you guys for saving my swing
The instruction in this video will help the average golfer more than any video I've seen. I needed to watch it a few times to get the concept. What worked for me was the concept of raising the club parallel to the ground at 45 degrees to my stance and then rotating to get the club to the top of my swing.
I've been watching golf instructional videos since RUclips began (I'm 55), you guys are HANDS DOWN THE BEST! Your combination of technology, drills, and explanations have helped improve my ball striking dramatically! THANK YOU!
I played my whole round of golf yesterday doing the 45 degree pre-set wrist hinge and actually had an amazing round of golf. Even on chips and pitches. It really does get you on plane early. It really does improve the strikes. Now I just need to get the muscle memory and be able to naturally make it part of a smooth flowing backswing. Thanks guys!!!
AMG definitely have the best videos on the backswing. Always enjoy the discussion among the two of you as I always learn something new or get a better understanding of the swing from it. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great info as always, you guys are so good! Question- How can you get the wrist in a better position ( at the top) ? or even cheat so the club is getting a little more close, so little time on the down swing to think about it then.
Thank you I have been struggling with my backswing after the following instruction to not set the wrist early. This was just the reinforcement I needed to move forward.
Love this video...have watched it many times. I listened to your most recent podcast: Unlocking the Power of the Opposite Movements int he Golf Swing and have a question as it relates to this RUclips video: In the initial takeaway...45 degrees of slight hinge, does that happen after impact in an opposite movement of the unhinge/release? Thanks.
Here’s an observation / analogy of mine: the relative distance of the swinging club head mass to the center of rotation acts like a governor in on an old steam engine where spinning weights fly out to slow down the engine and move in to make it go faster. Figure skaters do the same thing with their arms to control the speed of a scratch spin. It explains why the hinging the wrists (ulnar deviation and extension in the trail hand) early produces a more fluid and well balanced swing. But if you cock too soon or too much getting the mass too close to the center of rotation it can cause the body to rotate more that is ideal. The big picture goal is to stay in balance and starting the club with wrist hinge and keeping the club head outside the hands results in the club head mass automatically finding the ideal path as the lead arm rotates and pronates. One of my all time favorite golf quotes are Jimmy Demaret who said, “The golf swing isn’t difficult to master once the golfer learns to keep the club head outside the hands and stay in balance.” and Arnold Palmer who said, “I know if I get the first 18” of the backswing correct the rest of the of it will happen automatically.”
“Make a fist.” What a great swing thought to flatten the lead wrist AND straighten the lead arm. Tried it at the range today and the strikes were really crisp. Great video guys!
I’ve watched this at least 5x over the past 2 years. It gets better each time. ( One request, show the drill face on and down the line. It looks like you are standing at a 45* angle from the camera.) Thanks for sharing.
Hi, I have seen other videos of people saying to move the hands until the right thigh and then hinge/turn. Is that different compared to hinging at the start as shown in the video?
Liked video. On the down swing I have seen videos that indicate that there is ulnar deviation of the wrist at contact, which adds speed and is essentially an unwinding of the wrist from the backswing. Please comment or is there a preexisting video.
When pitching the club up early on plane in the backswing an important feeling is that the club needs to set exactly in the V of the right hand. Everyone talks about the direction the V's point and pulling up the right thumb, but if the club does not set exactly in the V all the way up then you are instantly off plane. For example before watching this video I was setting the club against the right finger, which instantly got everything started below plane. Like many, I only see in two dimensions, but your 3D ideas are fabulous, and this simple thought of immediately setting the club in the V to form an approximate 45% angle is golden.
Hi guys, great stuff as always, have you ever thought of doing a series on the complete swing, as in what you would like to see as nominal from start to finish? Love your stuff, keep up the good work and thank you! 👍🏻
Hi Dale, we did just that. I think it's roughly 5hrs of content with about 100 videos. And It's one of the bonuses we're including right now for new members who join our All-Access. Here's a link if you think you might be interested: amgolftraining.com/

Excellent. I really struggle with getting the club on plane in the backswing. I can see how the best players do it but can not replicate it. I agree that most good things on a golf swing come from a good backswing. Thanks again.
This video was super helpful for me as I tend to set the club very late in the backswing (almost no set at L arm parallel). Most other coaches out there I see talk about avoiding setting the wrists too EARLY (which has never been my problem so I’ve been left wondering about how to fix mine). What do y’all think is a more common fault (too early or too late) for Ams and why?
Awesome video guys. I shot my best round ever yesterday after watching your videos over the past month. Interestingly I’ve taken dozen of lessons from golf digest top instructors and they have all told me to do things that Ive told them felt “un-athletic” to me. On a side note, the punch with my left hand (I saw it in a previous video) has been the key in turning around my golf game. I always had too much left wrist cup. I also felt that going to an overlap grip instead of an interlocking grip has helped immensely in getting the left wrist to not cup on the back or down swing.
Also helps me to position the rt hand standing and then add upper and lower body positions. I do believe after 3 1/2 summers my fade/drift is going by the way af the dinosaur. Thanks.
Per my prior comment, most interested in the statement that the left arm comes away from the chest- doesn't that take the shaft away from its starting plane- how does the arm return to its original distance from the chest?
in the one arm drill, does the backswing stop once the club reaches the trail hand ? looks and feels like only three quarters to me , with maybe 70 degree shoulder turn. thanks !
Your concepts are awesome, I've played golf for 50 years, been as low as a 2 handicap in college and never really understood the swing until you explained it. Now at 68 I'm trying to get back into golf again but I have multiple swing errors, especially dragging the club back behind me and lifting up. What would be the first move to correct after the setup to start working on until its repeatable. I'm assuming that at this point don't even try getting back club head speed yet. Thanks Hank
Seems to me that another benefit to the 45 degree wrist hinge that it will keep the arms in a better position up top. I have been guilty of getting the hands too deep at left arm parallel in the backswing and i think this might help that?
Thx guys great vid! Can you talk about the "ground strike"? lately the strike of the ground feels as if i DRAG the club to the ground and then release the club after the pull of the strike....does this make sense? lol Can you talk about the "wipe" feeling of the strike? Also, how should the handle angle change during the strike (which ties into hand release)...it seems to me through observation there are many different ways to release the club and strike the ground....( ex..sometimes a hold of the angle of the wrists through the strike, sometimes a point and release of my wrists down to the ball).............I don't think golf instructors are putting enough thought into the exact way the club strikes the ground and the feeling of "when".....ie, dustin johnsons ' "hand feelings" are probably way different than a mark leishman "hand feeling"...........
That's a very complex topic that occurs in a very very very short amount of time. To make it even more complex, the feels used to describe it are highly subjective and individual to the player. What actually happens is pretty simple - the lead wrist is down cocking, rolling, and extending. We can see that through measuring. The variance comes from "how much of each" for a given player, and that's largely determined by what's happening to the club way before the release... meaning you don't really have much say so on the release if you the club doesn't matchup with what your trying to do much ealier in the swing. A great way to learn what YOU need to do and more importantly FEEL is to do this drill: ruclips.net/video/jr7h9yjWbnM/видео.html
@@AthleticMotionGolf you guys are awesome...thx for the response. Ive golfed for over thirty years, did it on the big break show,.... the hardest part is "keeping the hands"........the speed at which you take the club back makes a world of difference in "feels"...the mcclroy style doesnt allow a lot of time for set because he is jerking it fast with his left arm just after his brace into the ground move...thx for the drills i tried the 45deg angle set and mike saying the arms only lift...that one stuck and then i came up with my own set that my robotic brain never thought of before... i am curious how it works on the course...thx again!
@@AthleticMotionGolf you guys watch web simpson? HOW THE HELL IS HE A PRO?! his hand are awful and he contend and win tournaments?! he really is the man of the hands.....maybe he can feel the face the entire swing while its constantly fanning open to close?
Lots of teachers know the proper mechanics. Imparting that to the student in the easiest way is the difficult part. You two are the best at making things occur naturlly.
maybe I haven't seen the video on it if you guys have made one, how does Bryce DeChambeau get away with his wrist position? It looks very similar to Moe Norman's
Nice video - especially the comment about the misconception about how many players (me included) use our arms too much to get the club to the top. You often talk about left arm rotation. I can rotate my upper arm from the shoulder and can add even more rotation using my forearms. What is the correct way to rotate the arms? How much upper arm vs forearm rotation would be regarded as neutral? Cheers, Andrew
Incredible video- I would like to be clear and simplify- make a fist with left hand, pull up slightly with right. Left arm comes away from chest a bit, rotates and elevates slightly. Any of this my mis-understanding?
I’m a chronic early extender and hit a lot of weak shots off the heal. I have little to know wrist set in the backswing. Could this be leading to some of my issues? Great video guys! From a guy who has been frustrated for 5 years, whose back hurts after every round or bucket, and used to be a good player in high school. Keep up the good work!
I like the idea of feeling your thumbs in the backswing. Making sure they point upwards instead of towards the target. For years I played with a cupped wrist. Not sure how I ever had any consistency. Golf is so much easier when I have “dead hands/wrists” through the backswing.
Great video, but you really need to emphasize rotation of the core/chest around the spine while doing this. Do you believe the backswing starts with the arms/hands moving or rotation of chest/shoulders moving the arms?
I’ve played in highschool and college. Community college to be fair and for the better part of my 33 years on this planet I’ve played golf. I’ve never heard it put so simply before. When you go to a pro with a decent golf swing they don’t want to cover the basics when the basics are probably where the issues lie. Great F&*@in video.
Any recommendations on how to reduce the number of swing thoughts? I’ve learned so much from you guys but hard to remember it all. I’ve heard you say 3 things; plane, rotation, clubface = consistency but anything else. Thanks!
Have I misunderstood width in the backswing this whole time? I thought that along with keeping the arms extended, you should resist cocking your wrists until you absolutely have to. Don’t know where I got that idea. Thanks for these amazing vids guys.
Is the "catch" in the "catch it" drill (drill 2 in this video) suppose to be top of the backswing? When I do it my chest is not rotated 90*. Please clarify. Thanks!!
You explain how to set the wrists early in the backswing, how about a video explaining what happens to the wrists post-impact where acceleration to the finish needs to take place. I believe an understanding of what occurs post-impact is of equal if not more importance in attempting to understand the golf swing. In fact, this subject is often neglected. An appropriate comparison would seem to be what happens to the dominant wrist while shooting a basketball. The shooting wrist moves from extension to flexion in the follow through, the “hand reaching into the cookie jar” analogy. Similarly, for a right-handed golfer, throughout the swing, the right wrist motion moves completely from extension to flexion whereas the left wrist begins in flexion and finishes in extension. In the golf swing, for a right-handed player, the dominant right wrist needs to move through this entire range of motion into the complete follow through and not stop short of full flexion. The body needs to keep rotating and the club needs to continue to swing around the body. I believe my observations here are correct!
So, do you believe that the decades long teaching of the "one-piece takeaway" is really destructive -- or at best, misunderstood and difficult for the average golfer?
Would have saved me massive amounts of time if I had seen this video sooner. Much easier to implement "making a fist" and "waiter tray" than trying to copy someone else's hackmotion pattern. Keep up the great work!
Very clear instruction, I am a 1 handicapper who returned to the game after injury a few years ago and have been questioning myself about this due to lack of power and you have saved me doing something silly. If only I could now get a better shoulder turn 😔 Keep up the good work.
really fantastic stuff! - it's honestly amazing how simple the golf swing is and yet how brutally disastrous most humans are at making it happen - often thanks to clueless teachers who have no idea what they are doing
You'se guys never cease to amaze me. Dispelling teaching myths that have existed for decades. Also, can you do a video with Mike in one of those data suits? Just Kidding.
This all looks good on paper, but all this movement and cocking, one needs to get this all back to their set up position to their follow through, great if you can, swear words if you can't!

Drill
Where should the belt buckle be pointing at impact
toward the lead foot but tucked under some
Are you advocating to set the wrists at a 45 degree angle in the actual backswing or is this a drill?
We're saying that's isolating just the wrist movement. Add it to the other moving parts of the backswing and you get a "normal" looking move.
Do you take back the driver the same way?
Yep
another set of drills that are light bulb action.....Wow great job guys

Any recommendations on how to reduce the number of swing thoughts? I’ve learned so much from you guys but hard to remember it all. I’ve heard you say 3 things; plane, rotation, clubface = consistency but anything else. Thanks!
pick one or 2 and go to work on those only :)
Fantastic once again lads 😎♥️🙏🏻
Thanks pro!
Really good stuff here.
Though I think if you guys break down the right arm/wrist motions it might help people
We can do that one too😊
Like these drills..
Hope they help!
Have I misunderstood width in the backswing this whole time? I thought that along with keeping the arms extended, you should resist cocking your wrists until you absolutely have to. Don’t know where I got that idea. Thanks for these amazing vids guys.
I thikn when you resist until you cant resist anymore, most golfers end up collapsing the wrists too much. Hope that makes sense!
Is the "catch" in the "catch it" drill (drill 2 in this video) suppose to be top of the backswing? When I do it my chest is not rotated 90*. Please clarify. Thanks!!
No, you'll want to catch it well before the top👍
Excellent guys! Keep ‘em coming.
Doing our best. Thanks Magy🙏
Awesome😊
One of the better explanations I've seen explaining the wrist action. Cocking v. Setting. Set the left, cock the right.
we use this idea to help lots of golfers :)

Fellas: what a great video immediately clarifying the job of the arms vs that of the wrists. Thank you!
🙏👊
Great video, it’s my problem there...
Hope it helps👊
"Have enough Lag"... to do what... and how ? Is that topic taboo ? :)
11 people obviously don’t understand the golf swings as exquisitely as these two chaps 😬🏌️♂️👍🏻🙏🏻
😂
So, do you believe that the decades long teaching of the "one-piece takeaway" is really destructive -- or at best, misunderstood and difficult for the average golfer?
Fairly destructive for most... absolutely misunderstood on top of it and has done a lot of harm to many golfers.
Nice straightforward video...would have been better, imo, if you addressed the wrist positions on the downswing and thru swing...
Click our "videos" tab, Ed, and you'll find some videos on the wrist during those parts of the swing👍
Best in the biz...
wow thanks so much !!
If only I could now get a better shoulder turn 😔
Keep up the good work.
Glad it's helped, Donald! This is actually the first stage for more shoulder rotation😉
really fantastic stuff! - it's honestly amazing how simple the golf swing is and yet how brutally disastrous most humans are at making it happen - often thanks to clueless teachers who have no idea what they are doing
I don't think there's any question that "bad" swings are much harder to do than good ones. Sometimes too much effort gets in the way.
You'se guys never cease to amaze me. Dispelling teaching myths that have existed for decades. Also, can you do a video with Mike in one of those data suits? Just Kidding.
😂that's the best thing about GEARS - everybody's avatar has 3% body fat😆
This is to me the most important part of the swing. If you dont get this part right you will be so inconsistent.
Great comment and so true!👊
Kind of along the lines of what you guys are saying, Jason Day does not have a lot of wrist set.
Very similar
You guys are money!!! Thank you!
🙏💯
This all looks good on paper, but all this movement and cocking, one needs to get this all back to their set up position to their follow through, great if you can, swear words if you can't!
Why so many thumbs down? Don’t understand that!
Ps great video btw
🙏💯
🙋♂️ Have I been taking the club back correctly for the last 30 years. Nope! Thx!
How to avoid flipping
Steve Stricker is a perfect example
and Jason Day to a lesser extent
B Johnson day is less powerful than stricker?
Arjan Petersen no one mentioned power
Wrist hinging is the topic
