  • Documentary which reveals how the Parachute Regiment's historic missions in Normandy and Arnhem in World War II continue to motivate its recruits to this day.
The Parachute Regiment is the Airborne Infantry of the British Army. One battalion is permanently under the command of the Director Special Forces in the Special Forces Support Group. The other battalions are the parachute infantry component of the British Army's rapid response formation 16 Air Assault Brigade. It is the only line infantry regiment that has not been amalgamated with another unit since the end of the Second World War. Members of the Parachute Regiment are known to the rest of the army and the British public by the nickname the Paras.
The Parachute Regiment was formed during the Second World War and eventually raised 17 battalions. In Europe, these battalions formed part of the 1st Airborne Division, the 6th Airborne Division and the 2nd Independent Parachute Brigade. Another three battalions served with the British Indian Army in India and Burma. The regiment took part in five major parachute assault operations, often landing ahead of all other troops, during which they fought in North Africa, Italy, Greece, France, the Netherlands and Germany.
At the end of the Second World War, the regiment was reduced to three regular army battalions first assigned to the 16th Parachute Brigade and later the 5th Airborne Brigade. The reserve 16th Airborne Division was formed using the regiment reserve battalions in the Territorial Army (TA). Defence cuts gradually reduced the TA formations to a parachute brigade and then a single reserve battalion. In the same time period, the regular army battalions have taken part in operations in Suez, Cyprus, Borneo, Aden, Northern Ireland, the Falklands, the Balkans, Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan, at times being reinforced by men from the reserve battalion.

Great to read about the Paras....having served in the 4th Battalion in Palestine in 1945/46 had my 19th birthday there.......now aged 90 but often think about it....having lived in South Australia for 65 years.....makes me feel very proud to have been part of a great regiment. Ken Rhodes

I believe the stock remark when they handed out a parachute was "If it doesn't work, bring it back and we'll give you a new one!"

Maybe some time in the future, the Parachute Regiment will still have their 'chutes but built in to an encased backpack which will include a fuel tank for Paras Jetpacks as we've also seen trialled by the navy for boarding and alighting ships under review by naval personnel for coastguard duty and for purposes of stopping contraband.
The Paras will jump out, fall, then at particular attitude, fire up the jetpacks and fly towards their mission target landing a short distance away to regroup before completing the mission.

Yeah, agreed. I know from personal experience that the rest, well some of the rest of the army, are jealous of them and will put them down. Which of course is a lie. They are the best. I have best friends in both the Paras and Royal Marines. I wish I was in England with them all.

The Parachute Regiment- what else can be said but "Wow!" or "Amazing!?" So good, make that great. A bunch of really top professional soldiers and great people as of course the British and British Army are. America- fucking joke. Yeah, I was born and raised in the States, but I want to get away from here. Since I was a kid it's been "Fuck You Ben" well I say up yours to this country. We make a royal mess of the world and England/Germany/Europe get dragged into it. If England was the world's superpower again the world would be a better safer place and you can be sure The Paras would be leading the way. Great work, lads, and here's a big thumbs up to you from your mate across the sea who will be crossing over again in September to be with you once again. Much love,
    Benjamin Blake Mitchner.
