The"Miracle at the Meadowlands" also cost the offensive coordinator his job, because he told them to run the play. In the words of JG9, "Welcome to Dumb Decisions".
I live in Detroit. Orlovsky running out of the end zone is a microcosm of the Detroit Lions for the last several decades. The Colts vs Patriots trick play saved University of Michigan's punter from having the worst play of the week when he turned the ball over on the last play to give Michigan State the win. I have never been so heartbroken over a football game before or since.
7:53 - I will always call this the “What in the world?” Play, because of the announcer’s reaction, which made me literally roll on the floor laughing when I first heard it.
That Seahawks loss to the patriots in that superbowl has to be #1. That ruined the Seahawks. That was a dynasty in the making and just like that it was gone
Lynch was no Beast in that situation (1-for-5 in from-the-1 during the regular season, stuffed on a crucial red zone 3rd-and-1 earlier in the 2nd half).
Find out that Pete Carroll did say to run the ball but Wilson told them in the huddle that they were expecting them to run the ball so he told them that they are going to throw the ball instead
Jim Marshall's wrong way is my favorite all time sports blunders. One time I played ESPN NFL 2k5 on my Xbox, I was playing with a home team and I intentionally ran the wrong way to see if there's any reaction. It did. The crowd was booing loud and the commentary guy was saying these things. He's going the wrong way! Maybe he got hit too hard! Give that guy a compass! Get that controller away from the dog! And as soon as I ran out to the own end zone, he said He runs out and that's a Safety!
More honorable mentions: 1. New England Patriots not punting on 4th and 2 against the Indianapolis Colts. They were on their own side of the field. 2. Vontaze Burfict illegal hit on Antonio Brown costing Cincinnati the game against Pittsburgh. 3. Kyle Turley helmet throw drawing a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and giving the Rams the win.
Number 9 is the reason Romo is called a choker by NFL fans, that one play haunts his entire career. Like the old saying goes: you can always forgive but you can never forget; so yeah Dallas, let it go. P.S. the Thanksgiving game was the last game the Dolphins won that season. They were 9-2 and were set on going to the playoffs, unfortunately they lost them all; ended the season with 9-7. I think that was Don Shula's final season as coach.
Of course, number 1 is the butt fumble! It's also the funniest mistake (as long as you aren't a Jets fan.)! The butt fumble is what Mark Sanchez is remembered for in his NFL career.
As a Colts fan, that fake punt should be beyond even the scope of this list -- it deserves a video all on its own for its sheer WTFery. Every other play on this list just sort of happened in the heat of the moment -- this monstrosity was actually PLANNED.
Okay..wtf? That is #10? This literally lost them a superbowl, not a reg season game, loss of a touchdown that they got on the next play, or even a playoff game, but the SUPERBOWL! And not even a play in the superbowl but THE play that lost them the superbowl. Stakes matter.
Buffalo not squibbing the final kickoff in regulation in last year’s Divisional round. It gave Mahomes literally enough time to get to the edge of Butker’s range to send it to OT and Buffalo never got the ball.
That pass in super bowl 49(greatest super bowl so far imo) should be number 1..it really is a trip how much one moment can change everything cuz if they chose to run it and won that game practically all their careers would almost certainly be in better places than they are
I think Redskins quarterback Gus Frerotte knocking himself out of the game by slamming headfirst into the wall while in celebration of a touchdown run should have gotten an honorable mention
No. 9 can’t completely be blamed on Romo. They put in a new ball, a still slick new ball, which made the possibility of a fumble THAT much higher. And I’m not a Cowgirls’ fan, either. Truth be told, I wanted them to win so that we could’ve beaten them in the Super Bowl again.
Wasn't that the game where the 4th down play was ruled a catch, they start running the next play, only for the refs to blow it dead for a review, they review it, the call on the previous play gets overturned, resulting in a turnover on downs? And all this took place AFTER the ball was snapped on the current play, which should have automatically closed the window on reviewing the previous play, according to the rule book. All of those officials in that game should have been FIRED after that game, which ended with fans throwing beer bottles onto the field.
The sad part is that the butt fumble wasn't a mistake, it just something that happened just this time it was caused by a butt. And Romo's wasn't a mistake he just missed the snap, it happens all the time this was just a playoff game. If he would've saved that play, which he almost did, that would be a top 10 play
As a constantly disappointed and irritated JETS fan, the butt fumble is up there with falling for Miami's fake spike. But I believe #1 has to be the fumble recovery running the wrong direction for an opponent touchdown!
Jackson’s Miracle at the Meadowlands 2.0 almost ended up being his 2nd appearance on this list. Oh man if he would’ve got tackled at the 1 while running sideways to celebrate before getting in. Or better yet if there would’ve been a flag on the play bc of a hold or block in the back before he crossed the end zone.
Top 3 (In my opinion): 1. The Butt Fumble 2. Jim Marshall runs the wrong way 3. The Colts' Fake Punt These were the dumbest mistakes in NFL. I wasn't sure about putting the butt fumble at first because the other two were more stupid and obvious of how dumb they are, but apparently everyone has been talking about, and also that it is pure comedy and the fact it became a meme, so in some stages, I'll allow as the Top 3, the same as you guys.
The Seahawks not running the ball in the Super Bowl when they had Marshawn "Beast quake" Lynch and TWO attempts to get 1 yard should be #1. It literally cost them a championship. Every other entry on this list didn't have nearly as bad as a consequence.
I agree. That was one of the best games I've seen. But that mistake was very painful. Had they gave Marshawn Lynch the ball, Seahawks would win it and maybe they would have a dynasty run. But no. The Seahawks wasn't the same since.
I remember when Mr. Jerry Rice had an easy touchdown and he was high stepping in from the 10yrd line with his arm stretched out. Next thing you know, Jerry lost control of the football and it went flying out the back of the endzone. They spotted the ball where he lost control of it. The following year they made a nee rule. If a player loses control of the football on his own. Then ths football goes out the endzone, it will be ruled a Safety.
Sussel Wilson was the reason all the great player Seattle had, left the team after he threw away the Super Bowl over the middle. I’m glad as hell we got rid of him to Denver. Just look at the standings between the two. Denver is 4:6 and Seattle is 6:4 going into week 11.
The first one is a lot iffier than people like to think. People who understand this stuff a lot better than the average layperson have actually broken down that play and said that the call was probably correct, they just got unlucky. (Maybe the most significant thing is, Lynch didn't actually have a great record on goal-line runs. If you're *not* working from the assumption that "Lynch would totally have gotten it" -- because based on his own history, that's far from a certainty -- that really starts to change the calculus. Then you add in time and personnel factors, and, well, maybe it's not so stupid after all when you really look at the full picture.) My personal litmus test is, if it had worked, would be all be going, WOW, that was a gutsy call that worked out, or would it just be a "normal" game-winning play? If it wouldn't be considered risky if had succeeded, it doesn't become risky or a bad call just because it failed. In this case, I have a hard time imagining that everyone would've marveled over them making the "risky" choice to throw if that play had resulted in a TD, so...
Mistakes? The two helmet-to-helmet hits by Jaguars safety Andre Cisco during the Chiefs should have warranted immediate rejection. First helmet-to-helmet hit by Cisco against Juju Shuster ended up with Juju getting knocked out. The bad thing is referees simply picked up the flags and never penalized Cisco. The following week, he then was fined a measly $6k!
Before I even clicked on this video, I was saying to myself "Super Bowl XLIX has got to be on here". I was 13 and even I saw thow that play was bad. When you have a guy nicknamed "Beast Mode" who has a reputation for charging, *use him* .
Another one that should’ve been added was the 2002 NFL week one season opener between the Chiefs and Browns….Dwayne Rudd of the browns throws his helmet near the end of the game and the browns lost the game…..
YOOOO I LITERALLY REMEMBER THAT SEATTLE GAME BRO. i bet on it for the first time ever in my life. I talked so much shxt. I watched it w my gf just to watch the patriots lose. And they did that shxt I was soooooooooo tight bro wow what a flashback
