Gino Torreta won the Heisman Trophy in 1992. Jamarcus Russell flamed out of the league for three seasons because he was out of shape, very inconsistent, and didn’t even understand how an NFL play works because he didn’t watch the tape. Chargers are still a mediocre team because its owner continues to suck. They should’ve never left San Diego.
Jamarcus Russell didn't even study the plays that the Raiders coach gave him. They realized something was wrong so one day they gave him a blank CD and asked him to study the plays on it. The next day when they asked him if he had learned the plays on the CD he said yes. The rest is history.
It’s one thing when a player is a bust because of his own attitude, poor decisions, etc. But, it’s very tragic when a promising talented and committed young player becomes a bust due to injury. That’s the nature of the beast with sports.
Steve Emtman didn’t win the Heisman; he finished fourth in 1991. Desmond Howard won the trophy that year, and a defensive player didn’t win it until 1997 with Charles Woodson.
Ryan Leaf was a an atrocious bust, but I urge you to listen to recent interviews with him. He owns his mistakes, and he's a humble, funny and good dude
After his career he even committed felony and misdemeanors by trespassing someone's house just to get meds. It took him a little bit too long to mature emotionally and realized the sun does not revolve around him.
Sad part is he chose to stay an extra year to remain BMOC at USC vs declaring in ‘05 where he would’ve easily been picked ahead of Smith and Rodgers. But then he may have been #1 on this list.
@@salvatoresultana4058 At least Rodgers has a SB over both Leaf and Russell! He's still playing today. I think Rodgers likely has another 2-4 years in him
JaMarcus Russell was told to watch tapes on plays by the coaches in Oakland, and when he came back the next day JaMarcus said “Coach I love all the plays!” But little did JaMarcus know the tapes were blank.
Not only was Tony Mandarich one of the biggest busts of all time, but 4 out of the top 5 picks in that draft class are in the Hall of Fame. 1 Troy Aikman 2 Tony Mandarich 3 Barry Sanders 4 Derrick Thomas 5 Deion Sanders
Steve Emtman was a monster of a DL his first season at Indy. That one clip they showed of him was from a game late in his rookie season against Miami. Indy had just scored a go-ahead TD, and then Dan Marino looked to be primed for one of his patented last-minute comebacks. He drove all the way to the Indianapolis 10, and on the ensuing play Marino threw a ball in Emtman's direction that Steve speared in mid-air and ran back 90 yards for a game-sealing defensive TD. Again, this was a defensive lineman! Injuries pretty much wrecked the remainder of his career, which was sad because he really looked great that first season.
I didn't know that a Lions scout wanted no part of Andre Ware. That scout's fears were realized. Even though Ware ran a similar offense with the Houston Cougars, NFL defenses are an entirely different beast.

Tony Mandrich was number 2 draft pick in 1989 Top 5 1 Troy Aikman 3 Barry Sanders 4 Derrick Thomas 5 Deion Sanders All but Mandrich are in the Hall Of Fame
So we just gonna act like Justin Blackmon, Corey Coleman, Trent Richardson, Luke Joeckel, Jonathan Cooper, Aaron Curry, Gaines Adams don’t exist? I hate that is always “Bosworth”, who was on all-rookie team, and “Mandarich” who started more games than Joeckel, because those are the more known names. Do more research!
I guess I have a different perspective on this list now. While players who torpedoed their careers with bad financial decisions, drugs and arrests is one thing, franchises that are bad ownership and have a track record still to this day of not being any good at developing talent should never be overlooked. A lot of these names would have worked out if they had gone to different teams with better leadership.
I’d give a dishonorable mention to Henry Ruggs III, who is currently serving a sentence of up to 10 years in prison for killing a woman while driving under the influence.
Even though I'm a UT Austin Alumni I was a fan of his time at Texas A&M that's how popular he was however him being selected by the browns immediately sunk my hopes of him succeeding they were miserable and still kind of are
I haven’t watched this yet but as a Raiders fan, if JaMarcus Russell is not on this list, then the list is invalid lol dishonorable mention to Henry Ruggs III🤦♂️ Edit: aged well 😂 he was the first that came to mind when I read the title so it’s only fitting he was number one
When the Rams drafted Phillips, I was excited so excited I got my parents to take me to one of their preseason practices and tried to get his autograph. All I got was an autograph from some scrub, Isaac Bruce.
Jamarcus saying he must have been the best draft pick ever to be the worst draft pick ever gives you some insight to his thought process...or lack thereof.
Because Jamarcus Russell. Leaf was drafted #2 after a Top 5 all-time QB and ahead of another all-time bust who never gets talked about in Andre Wadsworth. Meanwhile the next 2 picks after Russell(picked #1. Or #3 as they say in video) are both in Canton- Calvin Johnson and Joe Thomas. You can even argue that Mandarich belongs ahead of him since he’s the only one of the Top 5 picks from his draft not in Canton with the other 4 being Aikman, Barry Sanders, Deion Sanders and Derrick Thomas.
I had a bad feeling about Linehart before he came out. He would have been the #1 or #2 overall selection if he had came out a season earlier. He decided to return to college and use his last year of eligibility. He had already graduated academically. The only class he took that year was ballroom dancing. He wanted to be big man on campus one more year. I knew then he had maturity issues and glad my team passed on him in the draft.
Leinart also had subpar arm strength. I’m a diehard SC fan and had season tickets those Carroll years. In warmups Cassel and Booty always had better arm strength. Leinart just made smart decisions with the ball. I never felt he’d succeed in the NFL. had more hopes for Reggie Bush though.
Dion Jordan was suspended 10 games for adderall… pretty sure that’s what the Seahawks defensive backs were suspended for and 3/4 of the suspensions either were lessened or removed completely.
If this list has taught me one thing it’s that if the rams have the #2 pick they shouldn’t even think about drafting a OL. Also thank god the rams found Aaron Donald with that second first round pick in 2014
Really? The Rams took left tackle Orlando Pace with the #1 overall pick in 1997. I'd say that worked out fine for them. Pace protected Kurt Warner's blind side during the Rams "greatest show on turf" era. He manned that spot for 13 seasons and earned a hall of fame spot.
Tony Mandarich was a way biggest bust than Johnny Football, most ppl knew Johnny wasn’t goons be that good in the league but Mandarich literally got drafted ahead of 3 of the all time greatest Deion Sanders, Barry Sanders and Derrick Thomas because of the hype
On Ryan Leaf - the way how he wasn't supported by Chargers during his tenure there was a major reason that Eli turned down any chance on going there....
As a 49ers fan I always wonder why AJ Jenkins doesn't get talked about more, Drafted #30 and had 17 career catch for 223 yard and no TDs. 0 catches as a rookie and he was healthy all year.
I would disagree with number 1. Ryan Leaf should be number 1, despite JaMarcus Russell having been first overall. The Chargers traded up to take Leaf, who some thought was better than Peyton Manning who went number 1. The 1998 draft also featured Charles Woodson and Randy Moss. The second quarterback taken in 2007 was Brady Quinn, who was also a bust. Because of that, the Leaf pick is worse. Also, Rick Mirer should be on this list as well as Todd Marinovich, Ki-Jana Carter, Akili Smith, and I would include Fabian Washington (2005) because the Raiders traded into the 1st round to the Jets in a trade that included players Al Davis got in the trade of Jon Gruden to Tampa Bay - instead of taking Aaron Rodgers after the Raiders had traded the 7th overall pick for Randy Moss, Davis took a CB who ran a 4.2. That, in the long run, is why the Raiders had to take JaMarcus Russell 1st overall and traded Moss for a 4th round pick. They could have taken Calvin Johnson or Joe Thomas at 1st overall. The list clearly skews towards more recent years because there is more footage readily available for this compilation when there are bigger flops in the annals of NFL history, players taken 1st overall that never played in the NFL. The Isaiah Wilson pick probably didn't need to be on the list, because it was 29th pick. My general rule when it comes to busts is, he had to be a top 5 pick or have had a lot of hype going into the draft. It was a story that he fell in the first round and it looked like a steal, as was the case with Johnny Manziel, when the Browns could have taken Derek Carr or Jimmy Garoppolo instead of Manziel who seldom played. I would have included Corey Coleman on this list as well - because Cleveland infamously took five wide receivers in the same draft because of analytics. A better list would be to rank the 10 teams that have had the most bad draft picks, since the NFL merger. I would guess, Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, Los Angeles Rams, Atlanta Falcons, and New Orleans Saints would be the top 5 or so. In their history, the Raiders have generally done well in the draft - except with quarterbacks like JaMarcus Russell and Todd Marinovich or more recent CBs like DJ Hayden, Damon Arnette, and Gareon Conley, or, in bizarre trades like the one that sent the 1st overall pick to the Chiefs for Cotton Davidson that KC used to pick Buck Buchanan (Hall of Fame), or the one in 2005 for Washington. And I forgot, Clelin Ferrell at 4th overall, but they made up for it with Maxx Crosby in the 4th round.
@Bman32x I mean they drafted 3 pro bowlers in 2000 including one who is gonna head to the hall of fame 1 day (abraham) and each of their 4 1st rounders lasted at least 11 seasons in the league. which is rather astounding really
As an Eagles fan, the pick that made me mad the most was Jalen Reagor. But, if it weren’t for that, we wouldn’t have both Devonta Smith and AJ Brown together right now.
Looks like I'm the second one to be here, and I daresay that this quite an entertaining video, and as always, I enjoyed the narration by Ryan a lot. Leaf was waaaaaay worse than Russell. Leaf completed 48% of his passes with 14 tds and 35 picks in his 25 career games. Russell completed 52% and had 18 tds and 23 int in 31 games.
Leaf i can understand, Russell as well, but manziel, before the draft, they said that he won't be as good in the nfl with defensive players are faster, and that he had to work on techniques and film room, yet the browns still took him.
Ryan Leaf is nothing short of an inspiration….said he was happier making 15 an hour working for a recovery center than making 5 million a year playing quarterback in NFL
There was a very poor draft in '88 named Ted Gregory who was supposed to be this great NT prospect who was a major disappointment who was traded for Sean Knight, who was in the same spot in NOLA. The Broncos and Saints traded problems. Denver could have drafted Chris Spielman [4 PB 1 1st All-pro], CB Eric Allen [6PB,1st APro], Jumbo Elliott or HoF Thurman Thomas among others.
Also, there is Art Schlichter who was a 4 yr starter at Ohio State who had a gambling addiction who went 4th overall in 82'. This is a peculiar case where the bust status in life mirrored that of the NFL.
The only reason people have Russell ranked over Leaf is because Russell went #1 and Leaf went #2. When you factor in numbers, lack of work ethic, and attitude, I think Ryan Leaf is the biggest bust in NFL history.

Vikings fan here. We’re a class organization we offered Cousins the same money but told him straight up we’re taking a QB round 1. His wife from the south forced him to Atlanta and screwed him over. Hey he gets 180 million. Penix might be great just might take a few years
Correction. Steve Entman didn’t win the Heisman. Only 1 defensive player has won the Heisman and that was Charles Woodson.
Love your video, WatchMojo, and keep up the great work you are awesome
Tony Mandrich was number 2 draft pick in 1989 Top 5 1 Troy Aikman 3 Barry Sanders 4 Derrick Thomas 5 Deion Sanders All but Mandrich are in the Hall Of Fame
Whatever the list, i knew it would end with Jamarcus Russel!
I Always thought Charles Woodson was the only defensive player to win the Heisman. Apparently Etman was a beast his junior year thanks WM
Never let your drafted QB go to Vegas
Do bad NBA draft picks next?
I guess I have a different perspective on this list now. While players who torpedoed their careers with bad financial decisions, drugs and arrests is one thing, franchises that are bad ownership and have a track record still to this day of not being any good at developing talent should never be overlooked. A lot of these names would have worked out if they had gone to different teams with better leadership.
I’d give a dishonorable mention to Henry Ruggs III, who is currently serving a sentence of up to 10 years in prison for killing a woman while driving under the influence.
Nah. He wasn’t a bad player which is the point of the list. He just made one horrible decision.
@@sblsundftbro he was cheeks
Dude had less than 30 receptions in his 2 seasons on the Raiders 😂💀
@@A_r78 Henry Ruggs caught just 50 passes in his career for less than 1000 yards.
@@Tommy_Wimmer yeah aka butt cheeks
He was a terrible player who was one of the least productive receivers in the league when he played. He put up WR4 stats
i knew manizel was going be a bust just from watching him in college
Even though I'm a UT Austin Alumni I was a fan of his time at Texas A&M that's how popular he was however him being selected by the browns immediately sunk my hopes of him succeeding they were miserable and still kind of are
I'm glad they updated they list.
I haven’t watched this yet but as a Raiders fan, if JaMarcus Russell is not on this list, then the list is invalid lol dishonorable mention to Henry Ruggs III🤦♂️
Edit: aged well 😂 he was the first that came to mind when I read the title so it’s only fitting he was number one
Nice to see Klingler and Akili on this list lol
They may disagree
When the Rams drafted Phillips, I was excited so excited I got my parents to take me to one of their preseason practices and tried to get his autograph. All I got was an autograph from some scrub, Isaac Bruce.
Was Issca better then Philip
They had also traded away Jerome Bettis before the draft.

Man, we got robbed of what could’ve been an amazing QB in Russell.
Jamarcus saying he must have been the best draft pick ever to be the worst draft pick ever gives you some insight to his thought process...or lack thereof.
How is Leaf NOT at the #1 spot?!
JaMarcus was #1 overall WatchMojo
If this list has taught me one thing it’s that if the rams have the #2 pick they shouldn’t even think about drafting a OL. Also thank god the rams found Aaron Donald with that second first round pick in 2014
Really? The Rams took left tackle Orlando Pace with the #1 overall pick in 1997. I'd say that worked out fine for them. Pace protected Kurt Warner's blind side during the Rams "greatest show on turf" era. He manned that spot for 13 seasons and earned a hall of fame spot.
@@stevegallo8483 yeah I’m not saying if they have the #1 pick I’m saying the #2 pick. It’s like when the browns try to draft a qb #22
Emtman never won the Heisman, he was nominated for the Heisman.
I'm a Bengals fan and their draft history could be summed up in something he said, 'The Bengals rolled the dice and paid the price."
20:15 First Overall

"New York Jets select..."
"OH GOD NO"
4 first rd picks in 2000. And they still managed to mess it up.
Hopefully tonight they can get it right
@Bman32x I mean they drafted 3 pro bowlers in 2000 including one who is gonna head to the hall of fame 1 day (abraham) and each of their 4 1st rounders lasted at least 11 seasons in the league. which is rather astounding really
Even Kyle Brady, their 1995 first round pick, stuck around the league until 2007.

"They don't gotta quarterback!!! Who's gonna get em the damn ball????!?"
2014 browns took both gilbert and manziel. that is the epitome of bad drafting
That Klinger stat line was insane
How about Kenny Pickett, Artie Burns, Jarvis Jones, Ziggy Hood, Devin Bush? Just a few of Mike Tomlins terrible first round picks.
As an Eagles fan, the pick that made me mad the most was Jalen Reagor. But, if it weren’t for that, we wouldn’t have both Devonta Smith and AJ Brown together right now.

@Reaperguy67 My apologies, I didn't realize it until now.😅
Leaf was waaaaaay worse than Russell. Leaf completed 48% of his passes with 14 tds and 35 picks in his 25 career games. Russell completed 52% and had 18 tds and 23 int in 31 games.
Yeah but Russel stole a lot of money from the Raiders he was probably in the top 10 of the highest paid QBs in the league at the time
As a Raiders fan I can honestly say the last 35 years is more embarrassing than Jamarcus Russell 🤦
You know this is a draft bust list when you say "Who?" for almost every pick.
Penix Jr to the Falcons will be on another version of this video in 5 years
I remember being surprised when they chose him like why in my opinion he's got to be the worst pick of the 2024 draft
Could do an entire list on Ryan Leaf’s fall from grace
Just shows that u can have a great College career 😄 doesn't mean it will continue in the Pros if u get drafted 🤷♂️
What’s funny about Lawrence Phillips is that the rams traded away hall of famer Jerome Bettis to get him 😂
Why did Cincy think a qb that completed 36 out 57 throws was a good idea? 😂
Cant really call someone a bust if they get injured... right?
I also don't think it's fair to call someone a bust for injuries. anyone can get injured
